Review: The Cocoon alphabet compilation is an always timely snapshot of the year in techno that was. It's well-curated by label head Sven Vath and always digs into several different sub-genres with a knowing skill. Now up to letter U, it is still going strong as we dive into everything from the soft and dreamy acid-laced deep techno delights of New Jackson's 'Acid Jackson' to the more bright and intense sounds of Jakob Reiter's 'Il Rotori'. Drumcomplex & Frank Sonic provide more epic peak time moments with 'Lacalute' and Space Dimension Controller's deft synth flourishes on 'Cold Tunings' make for a gorgeous high-speed techno trip.

Review: You can always rely on the Cocoon compilations to bring you a high level of quality control and an authoritative overview of the state of techno around the time of release. This mammoth six-LP set will give you a lot of music to work with, and it's featuring a dizzying cast of high-end operators starting with the mighty Stephen Brown. Each track gets a side of vinyl to itself, serving as a kind of statement for how much faith the label put in each of these 12 tracks. Amongst the best on this top-drawer comp are Daniel Avery's metallic, spellbinding 'Your Future Looks Different In The Light' and Carl Finlow's lithe electro workout 'Surface Control', but as you might well expect each track is one you'll turn to again and again to give your mix some spice.

Review: The annual Cocoon compilation is a perfect snapshot of what's going on in the more popular corners of the European techno scene. Curated by label head and Ibiza party king Sven Vath, this year's edition is a comparatively deep and melodic affair. A big shout goes to Talaboman for their excellently entitled "Big Room Anthemic Groovy Pounding Trance Dub Bomb Superb!" which is indeed a big room anthemic groovy pounding trance dub bomb, while Edward serves up a more twisted roller (the excellent "End Days"), Raxon goes deep with "The Turbulent" and Mark Broom hammers home with tripped out sci-fi banger "Jaded", amongst many other gems.

Review: It's fair to say that few other labels would retain such a degree of consistency and adventure over the duration of a compilation series as Cocoon have done with their alphabetized collections. Arriving at the letter N, Sven Vath's label once again draws together tracks from artists close to Cocoon as well as some less associated across six slabs of vinyl. If you graced Ibiza over the summer season you may well have heard papa Vath dropping some of the tracks contained within at Cocoon's residency at Amnesia. In terms of tracklisting, it's a typically diverse affair with the various shades of techno from Lucy, Ricardo Tobar and Truncate complemented by the presence of Aril Brikha, Markus Fix, Ripperton and more.

Review: Sven Vath's label belatedly celebrates the landmark of passing the hundred release mark with this triple vinyl box set. Given the scale - 3LP complemented by expanded 2CD - and those involved it's no surprise that the Cocoon 100 Box Set took that bit longer coming together and those of a techno and minimal persuasion will undoubtedly salivate at this tracklisting. Everyone from Ricky Villalobos to Lawrence and Nick Curly via Loco Dice and Extrawelt contribute previously unreleased productions and the mood is as diverse as you'd expect from this list. "Arild" finds Villalobos in typically restrained mood, whilst Dial boss Lawrence conjures up a hypnotic production in "Serpentine" that has a touch of the STLs about it. Deep acid, rowdy drum tracks, abstract and psychedelic productions follow (Secret Cinema's "Supertek" is a notable example) and that's just on the vinyl. Sven mate you're spoiling us.

Review: Following up the terrific 'Little We Know' EP a mere few weeks ago by Hamburg heroes Extrawelt on Traum Schallplatten, they are right back with this amazing full length on the powerhouse Cocoon imprint.15 years into their careers, it was never their plan to release a 'best of' album, but here it is. Extra Welt Hits is a time capsule drenched in the essence of the act's DNA. Accentuated by newly remastered tracks that serve their ever evolving, clever and out-of-the-box sound. Highlights come in the form of the brooding minimal funk of 'Fernweh', the ethereal and introspective remix of Minilogue's 'The Leopard' and the slinky and hypnotic live version of 'Dark Side Of The Room'.

Review: Since Sven Vath's 2022 album Catharsis was an epic, triple-vinyl affair, it seems fitting that this remixed version is equally as vast. There are one or two surprises - see Krystal Klear's grandiose, big room trance take on 'Feiern' and a wonderfully pitched-down, chugging and bleeping re-wire of 'Catharsis' courtesy of Mano Le Tough - but for the most part the revisions offer different takes on big room-friendly techno and drowsy Germanic tech-house. That's no bad thing though, as the highlights come thick and fast throughout, with our picks of a very strong bunch including the deep, dreamy and intergalactic Florian Hollerith version of 'Silvi's Dream', a thumping, frankly nightmarish Planetary Assault Systems revision of 'Nyx', a dubbed-out-but-jacking Detroit techno take on 'Butoh' by Robert Hood, and Robag Wruhme's wonderfully wonky interpretation of 'The Worm'.

Review: It has been 20 years since Sven Vath last released an album. He was already a well-established techno mainstay by then but has gone stratospheric in the years since. While best known for his epic Cocoon label parties in Ibiza, with their colourful techno sounds, he is about so much more as a producer and proves that here. There is silky electro, rugged new beat, some dream and insular ambient and even a bit of expansive and melodic progressive house. It's a widescreen work from a legend of the scene that reminds us he is more than just a party-starting DJ.

Review: Extrawelt have been at the heart of the Cocoon operation for many years. The dup always manages to explore well outside the lines of the German' label's common remit though and that is the case once more on their latest full length outing, a special edition of their 'Schone Neue Extrawelt record that is presented across six sides of white vinyl. It takes in mind melting mining cuts next to ragged and frazzled techno made by machines, with dubbed out late night cuts and chugging melodic workouts like 'One Tree Hill' also included on what is a truly varied record.

Review: Last year, Extrawelt delivered their first album for five years, the wonderfully expansive and on-point Fear of an Extra Planet. Less than 12 months on, they're back with another suitably epic full-length outing, "Unknown". Across three DJ-friendly slabs of wax, the German duo eschews the willful electronic eclecticism that's marked out their recent career in favour of 12 tracks that mine the world of electro for inspiration. While there are subtle nuances and incremental shifts throughout - a little more acid here, a nod to early '90s IDM there, and regular tempo changes throughout - the majority of the album is as spacey, weighty and punchy as you'd expect. It's almost as if Extrawelt has spent the last year exclusively listening to Drexciya records. Superb stuff all told.

Review: Given that they've long been one of techno's busiest live acts, it's perhaps unsurprising that Fear of an Extra Planet is Extrawelt's first album for nearly five years. We'll forgive them for taking their time, though, because it's really rather good. It's largely warm, atmospheric and melodious, flitting between shuffling techno floor fillers, analogue-rich electro, low-slung breakbeat-driven creepiness (see the Brown Album-era Orbital style goodness "Oddification" and "Gentle Venom"), acid-flecked late night throb-jobs ("Silly Idol"), deep space hypnotism ("Fear of an Extra Planet"), James Holden style positivity ("The Friendly Coroner") and surprisingly loose, Giallo-influenced soundtrack fare (excellent closer "2084").

Review: Given Sven Vath's unique and long-standing career in techno, it's fascinating to think about what he was playing in the early years of the Dorian Gray and Omen, two pillars of Frankfurt nightlife. This unique retrospective looks back over the 80s and early 90s, touching on the early EBM, new wave and industrial sound Vath first came up through, capturing the early wave of Detroit techno and Chicago house, the first whispers of European trance and techno and lots of curveball selections in between. It's an exuberant, eclectic view into one of the most flamboyant selectors out there, and whether you're a fan of Vath or just love the era, these are three CDs bursting with incredible music.

Review: German label Cocoon is a real icon when it comes to techno. It very much introduced the genre to the mainstream with its presence in Ibiza and continues to put out plenty of useful 12"s as well as its wide array of compilations. This latest is an eighth edition of the Dots & Pearls collection which tends to more stripped back and underground than some of its other annual round-ups. As such we get dark and menacing techno growers like 'Antidot' from Alex Bau, Redshape's misty and loft creeper 'Ghost Story' and Aocram & Ramsey Neville team up for the ghoulish and swampy techno energy of 'Brooklyn Structure', with plenty more besides.

Review: Sven Vath, a legendary trance and techno producer from Germany, has released a new interpretation of his trance classic L'Esperanza. This dreamy, uplifting, and melodic track is a testament to Vath's artistry and his ability to create timeless music. His tracks are known for their infectious rhythms, soaring melodies, and ethereal soundscapes. 'L'Esperanza' is no exception, and it remains one of the most iconic trance tracks of all time. The new Hardspace mix of 'L'Esperanza' is a darker, more intense take on the original. The tempo is faster and the bassline is heavier. However, the track retains the melodic beauty and emotional depth of the original. This comes on picture disk!

Review: Sven Vath presents us with Sounds Of The Eleventh Season, a bumper double CD mix celebrating another summer on the White Isle. The opening CD is initially a deep, dark and dubby affair, taking us through Chateau Flight's remix of Mano Le Tough, DJ Koze's impeccably produced "Sbooty" and the tropical techno of Speedy J (remixed by Edit Select). Sven, the old rascal, takes a turn for the rave cave towards the end with MMM's immense "Nous Sommes MMM" wild stuff indeed! The second CD opens with the raw analogue shuffle of DJ Qu's "The Law", before proceeding into a more housey, vocal led workout. The inclusion of Kyle Hall's superlative remix of the Hundred In The Hands "Dressed In Dresden" is a particularly pleasing moment. Life in the old dog yet? Silly question.

Review: It's hard to believe that Sven Vath's empire has been in existence for 11 years, but what's easier to comprehend is the label's unerring knack of releasing killer club techno. This compilation gives some of Vath's favourite artists - like Roman Flugel and Steve Rachmad - as well as newbies like Patrick Kunkel, who also provides a DJ mix, a chance to rework the catalogue. From Visionquest's murky but driving take on Dinky's "Acid in My Fridge" through the abrasive, jacking Flugel remix of Martin Buttrich's "Hunter", Carlo Lio's tribal take on Dubfire vs Huntemann's "Diablo" and the fist-pumping, big room techno of Paul Ritch's interpretation of 2000 & One's "Tropical Melons", there can be no doubt about this compilation's dance floor credentials.

Review: Originally released in 1986, "Electrica Salsa" by electronic group OFF is a German dance pop classic featuring Sven Vath's hilarious vocals; he was only 21 at the time on this track produced by Luca Anzilotti and Michael Munzing. It gets some modern revisions here by Innervisions stalwart Henrik Schwarz who brought in a brass band and recorded live strings and latin bass for his rendition, but the dub version is more typical of the Berlin producer's sound. Another Frankfurt legend gets onboard for a remix in the form of Roman Flugel, whose remix is another epic deep house escapade you'd expect of the man, as per usual.

Review: British producer Tim Green is still at it. After making his splash on the scene several years on respected imprints such as Trapez, Dirtybird and Get Physical with his highly technical minimal grooves, his profile has reached another plateau as seen by this release on Sven Vath's vanguard Cocoon. First up is "Eclipse" with its warped, monster bassline and mesmerising synth work flowing all over the place that'd appeal to all the Border Community heads. On the flip we have "Thieves" going for a more standard tech house groove, getting some nice synth pads happening over a pumping peak time groove.

Review: Extrawelt rose to prominence during the Kompakt trance boom, but to expect their latest album to merely contain storming, melodic club tunes would do the German duo a disservice. Naturally, there are moments on In Aufruhr where melodic techno reigns, like the epic hooks and fragile rhythms of "Schlusslicht" or the meaner, woozy synths of "Division Dunkel". But of greater interest are the contributions where Extrawelt push the sonic envelope further. "Herz Aus Blech", with its mixture of buzz-saw bass and subtle ivory tinkling, is one such example, while "Die Welt Ist Nicht Genug" and "Dumb Age" see them diversify into stepping, dubby rhythms with resonating sub-bass and shanty effects to the fore. All of this arrives in a bumper 3x12" pack!

Review: Sven Vath's long-standing Cocoon brand begins its second decade with this 12-track label collection. Cheekily titled Compilation K, it proudly boasts a deeper-than-average collection of Euro-centric tech-house grooves that should appeal to afterhours the world over. With Dinky, Henrik Schwartz, Argy and Sascha Dive involved alongside an coterie of lesser-known names, there's plenty to investigate. While highlights are perhaps not as plentiful as you'd expect, the standard is reliably high. Certainly, deep house minded DJs will find plenty of floor-friendly fodder, not least David August's comforting opener and Minilogue's delicious "Blessed", while techno heads will flock to Argy's retro-futurist gem "The Thrust".

Review: Cocoon Recordings celebrate the turn of the year with their seventh annual collection of electronic music. The Frankfurt label, owned by Sven Vath, is well-known for these yearly compilations, which tend to opt for euphoric breaks, techno and ambient as their main mode of expression. Highlights on this comp include the curveball 'Makeup Artist' by Monaco & Povoa, a maddening affair of vocoded voices and effed-up grooves, and Avision's 'Groove Theory', an ultra-pressurized techno-trance number.

The Ace (Butch remix)
Loving (Mark Broom Soul mix)
Twentythree (Gregor Tresher remix)
Review: An essential part of the German Techno scene for more than fifteen years now, Johannes Heil is now in better shape than ever. With his eighth studio album "Loving", Heil draws both a modern and traditional balance of his life from and for the music, and thus sets one of the undisputed musical highlights this year. vWith this exclusive remix package, Cocoon Recordings is even topping that one: the Mainz-born Bülent Gürler aka Butch is known as one of the most versatile German Tech House producers, at least since his club smasher "No Worries". In his version of "The Ace", the perfect open air hymn for the modern House generation is emerging from a flute-like summer harmony. An essential contributor to the British Techno scene since the beginning of the nineties is Mark Broom. His Soul Mix of "Loving" combines the melancholy of Detroit techno with Ibiza House dubs and powerful handclaps, forming an intensive homage to the sensuality of the dance floor. Last not least, Gregor Tresher is celebrating the return of the melody with his remix of "Twentythree", after having released some stricter records for Break New Soil and Drumcode. The digital edition of the Loving remixes is completed by three more revisions: Amsterdam-based Bart Skils massively stresses the bass membrane with his pumping version of "Loving", while Mark Broom is pushing further into the depths of the Balearic Dub surge with his second Soul Mix. With "Seeded", the Cocoon Club House duo C-Rock/Matthias Vogt aka Motorcitysoul is finally exploring the occasionally menacing deepness of the House area with vibrating percussions and disco strings, just in the manner of their releases for Simple Records and Ibadan. After all, love wants to be shared.

Review: Sven Vath's enduring Cocoon label puts a lot of eggs in one basket here as it offers up a one-sided splattered vinyl 12" featuring a monster Bart Skils & Weska reinterpretation of Metal Master's 'Spectrum.' It is a quietly epic techno track whose beauty is in its constantly rising sense of tension. Review: Given that Einzelkind recently collaborated with Ricardo Villalobos, it's perhaps unsprirising that "Free Savioni (Amnesia Pearl Mix)" boasts plenty of noises and discordant, off-kilter percussion hits straight out of the Chilean's minimal techno playbook. Yet it's no mere Villalobos tribute; in fact, these typically out-there touches are merely garnish for the Frankfurt man's hypnotic, straight-laced drums, spacey electronics and warming chord progressions. On the flip you'll find the similarly epic "Aya Curanderito", a rock solid South American techno throb-job blessed with subtle acid lines and short, effects-laden vocal and guitar samples. It boasts an undeniably tropical breakdown, too, for those who like their music sticky and humid.

Review: This fine EP gathers together four previously unreleased exclusives from the latest edition of Cocoon's Dots & Pearls series, which was mixed by Markus Fix. His contribution to the EP, "Baroon" - a kind of contemporary re-imagining of the original 1988 version of The KLF's "What Time Is Love" with extra TB303 acid lines - is undoubtedly one of the highlights, alongside the ethereal melodies and early morning fuzz of Argy's intoxicating "How Late It Was, How Late". Elsewhere, Christian Burkhardt peppers a rolling house groove with boisterous but blissful stabs on "Karambolage", and Jimi Jules serves up a loose and languid take on the foreboding, stretched-out Innervisions tech-house sound ("Euphrasia").

Review: Tobi Neumann is without doubt a trendsetter in the field of tech house and electro house. These are genres which have been attributed a German authorship in the last years - not surprising with labels like Get Physical and Playhouse and protagonists like Loco Dice, Steve Bug and Tobi Neumann. The former Munich resident lives now in Berlin and has been forming the definition of tech house like no other producer, and, with his productions and remixes, was able to make his mark also as a DJ. His bookings take him all around the world and of course, Tobi is again one of the residents of Cocoon Club Ibiza. Perfectly matching is his compilation, the post-World Cup mix, the soundtrack of this summer. "Fliederlieder" "Lilacsongs" - that sound like summer and smells like blooming bushes. Casual and easygoing in the beginning, with tracks by DWA, Cassy and the Sunpeople, before it is becoming more and more driving but always tasteful tech house. Tobi assembled the who-is-who of current tech house (Anja Schneider "Rancho Relaxo"), and is not shy of exploring demanding deep house (Frank Roger & Femi Kuti). A great CD, which illustrates the current trend of minimal meets deep house in a perfect way and will escort us through the summer.

This release sees him notch up a release on Cocoon for the first time, allowing him to affix the shiny, holographic label logo into his discography alongside such top-tier imprints as Trapez, Watergate, Rekids, Visionquest and Hot Creations. "Countach" is arguably one of his most positive and sun-kissed releases to date, with the action focusing on waves of rising and falling synthesizer arpeggio lines, rising electronic orchestration and spine-tingling motifs. Kompakt Extra regular Rune Reilly Kolsch retains some of this fluttering melodiousness on his flipside remix, combining key melodic phrases with more energetic beats and a raw new bassline of his own.

It is synonymous with colourful parties all over the world but still does a great job of serving up fresh sounds too. Two mainstays combine for this one with Defekt and Extrawelt cooking up 'Cell Sync' which is dark and menacing, with rigid drum loops and menacing synths. 'In The Space Of' has more molten synth modulations layered up to a ghoulish effect over slamming drums. It's peak time stuff, for sure.

Review: While Extrawelt's post-prog house Border Community days are long gone, you can still detect a hint of that early progressive ethos in this second album for Sven Vath's Cocoon imprint. Musically, their various takes on house and techno benefit from a similarly atmospheric approach, even if their aesthetic is more fiercely contemporary and deeply rooted in German club culture. There's certainly something vaguely proggy about the blissful dubbed out sounds of "Schlusslicht" and the melodic dub house of "Die Welt Ist Nacht Schelung". The same can be said for the touchy-feely "Blendwerk", which sounds like classic Orbital reworked by Sasha or John Digweed.

Though just three contrasting suites of airlocked and airborne ambiences come kick-pummellings, 'Ascension' bedazzles with its ability to evoke the theme of space exploration despite not ever uttering a word. Review: After impressing the heads with two intriguing albums on BAR25, German producer Matthias John pops up on Cocoon with this third full-length. The Keys is a curiosity, in many ways, as it's far more melodically upbeat and noticeably warmer than much of Cocoon's output. Musically, it takes the 4/4 rhythms of deep house and techno as its base, layering up shuffling rhythms of all manner of fuzzy synths, curious old electric pianos and woozy electronics. It's a formula that regularly makes for entertaining listening, even at its oddest (and the vocal contributions on "The Interview (Part 1)" and "The River" are definitely strange).

Review: Having escaped the minimal cul-de-sac he'd accidentally wandered into some years back, Sven Vath seems a man reborn. Here, he gives a glimpse of his party-rocking credentials with a bouncy, fun-filled mix for his own Cocoon label. Designed as a tribute to Cocoon's Ibiza residency (this summer was their 13th season on the White Isle), the two discs bristle with energy - all darting synths, pounding rhythms and late night funk. In many ways, it reflects his style of late, alternating between bold, tech-tinged house and the sort of no-holds-barred techno that still retains enough funk and synth-flavoured futurism to entertain for long periods.

Review: For their latest foray into mix CD territory, Sven Vath's Cocoon imprint have called on the talents of deep house and hypnotic techno types Raresh and Sascha Dive. Their brief is simple: to each lay down a selection fit for Cocoon's occasional Green & Blue parties. Raresh goes deep and percussive on his selection, moving through groove-laden tracks and mixes from Delano Smith, Luciano, Deepchord and Ricardo Villalobos (remixing White Isle classic "Cafe Del Mar"). Dive, on the other hand, takes things up a notch, flitting effortlessly between smart Detroit techno, classic deep house and melody-laden peaktime jams from the likes of Problem Kids, Recloose, Kenny Larkin and Osunlade.

Review: Ever loyal to their Cocoon homebase, Minilogue are back with their second album after 2008's sprawling Animals, and once again it's a bombastic affair taking in both functional club concerns and outright ambient listening, with a clear split down the middle. Vinyl lovers still get the ambient tracks in CD form, reserving the wax space for the bangers in this new set. Blomma sports the hallmarks of classic Minilogue production, from ethereal harmonies to elegant rhythmic constructions that serve to support the music rather than define it. There's arguably a move towards crustier synth sounds on tracks such as "Atoms With Curiosity That Looks At Itself & Wonder Why It Wonders", but this still comes rendered in the classic warm minimal tones that Minilogue have built their name on.

Black Halo (7:37)
Phantom Dancer (6:36)
Review: Gregor Tresher is one of the artists who can say has just about completed techno. He's been at the top table for decades and always cooks up monstrous sounds that will slay any seized club. That he is now back on Sven Vath's Cocoon makes perfect sense as both are titans of the scene. He offers two direct and to the point tracks here - one on each side of this 12". 'Black Halo' channels the sort of intense energy and cosmic vibes you would expect of a tune with that title and on the flip, 'Phantom Dancer' is another irresistible techno tune awash with electric synth work and smart drum progmaming.

Review: The appearance of a fresh Sven Vath Sound of the Season mix is fast becoming as great a Christmas tradition as terrible office parties, family arguments and Morecombe and Wise repeats. As with the 17 previous editions, this 18th volume is built around tracks that did the business at Cocoon's annual Ibiza residency. While there naturally darker moments and forays into minimalist techno space, for the most part Vath has delivered a bustling, big room-friendly mix packed with bombastic techno anthems, overlooked gems and slept-on cuts. There's a great flow across the two discs and the track listing, which contains killer cuts from Eddie Fowkes, Villa H2H (an outfit that includes Ricardo Villalobos and Chez Damier), Aubrey, Inigo Kennedy and KiNK, is particularly on-point.

Luca Ballerini - "Hanami (Armonia Rosa)"
Review: Cocoon Recordings' alphabetically ordered compilation series reaches the latter O, with a selection that the German imprint claims comes with "an extra portion of deepness". Sequenced to reflect the ebb and flow of one of the label's infamous Ibizan parties, it begins in deep and drowsy mode with Roland M Dill's "The Messenger", before quietly shifting through the gears. Although rooted in the label's now-familiar brand of atmospheric, big room techno and undulating tech-house, there are nevertheless a few surprises; check, for example, the dense, African-influenced percussion and ragged electronics of Traumer's "Kiraf", the rushing pianos and steel band melodies of Dast's "Paranormal Effect", and the soft-touch, Isolee style hypnotism of Karim Sahraoui's "The Comforter".

Josh Wink - "Nuclei" (8:31)
Ricardo Tobar - "El Eterna" (12:04)
Review: Cocoon's 20th Anniversary might not have led to as many wild parties as the boss Sven Vath might have hoped given the pandemic, but it has sure given rise to some big techno releases. This third EP is another banger with the Everton Josh Wink opening it up. His tune 'Nuclei' is a writhing, frothing, eight minute monster with buzzy synths and rising pads over chattery perc. On the flip is an utterly different proposition, Ricardo Tobar's 'El Eterna,' a minimal headwrecker with bleeping melodies and chunky house drums that brings something different.
