Rampen (APM: Alien Pop Music)
Rampen (APM: Alien Pop Music) (yellow vinyl 2xLP)
Cat: 525609 1. Rel: 05 Apr 24

Indie/Alternative
Review: The legendary experimental German band Einsturzende Neubauten is back with their first album since 2020, Rampen (apm: alien pop music). Since their formation in 1980, the band his sought out to blaze their own trail in making what others would assume is noise into their own brand music. Their own music language was created and brought with them legions of followers that have added a bit of Einsturzende Neubauten's influence to their own sounds. The band has once again pushed their sound even further - alien pop music. This edition comes on yellow vinyl.

Review: Clutch's cult and debut recording back in 1993 has never before been available on vinyl, but it is now thanks to Weathermaker Music who have pressed it up to a limited 180 gram sea glass blue vinyl and included a numbered and autographed insert. Transnational Speedway League is a great work from the band's Tim Sul and it comes with great artwork which has been redesigned by Dan Winters and Sult. The limited pressing is a must-own for fans that reminds of the band's very earliest sonic roots, raw riffs and guttural vocals that all make for an intense and arresting album still now all these years later.

Review: Soft Cell's Non Stop Erotic Cabaret & Other Stories: Live is a different and thrilling way to experience the band's iconic debut album. Recorded during their farewell concert at London's 02 in 2018, the album - with superb neon artwork - captures the essence of their groundbreaking synth-pop sound with electrifying live performances. Marc Almond's haunting vocals and Dave Ball's innovative synth melodies shine throughout the setlist, including classics like 'Tainted Love' and 'Say Hello, Wave Goodbye.' With raw energy and nostalgic fervour, Soft Cell delivers a mesmerising experience that pays homage to their legendary career while showcasing their enduring influence on the electronic music landscape.

Review: 40 years have now passed since the formation of Xymox, the band that morphed into Clan of Xymox two years later. During the 1980s, they were pioneers of what would now be known as 'darkwave' and have continued to offer up albums in this style - with a dash of goth-rock thrown in at times - periodically ever since. 'Spider On The Wall' was first released in 2020 and here gets a much-needed reissue on blue and yellow splattered vinyl. It's a fine set that sounds like it could have been recorded in the band's mid-80s heyday, with highlights including the post-Joy Division New Order flex of 'She', the Vince Clarke-era Depeche Mode strut of 'Into The Ever Known', the throbbing, EBM-influenced dancefloor goodness of 'All I Ever Know' and the pleasingly doom-laden darkness of 'When We Were Young'.

Review: The 40th anniversary of the start-point of the career of Billy Bragg, British singer-songwriter and activist whose music's stark sociopolitical conscience has gripped fans and protesters alike since 1983. In its standard form the box-set comes as a 14-CD opus, containing more than 300 songs - including each of his 12 studio albums, non-album singles and B-sides, session tracks, rare live recordings, collaborations and previously unreleased material. However, this is no standard edition; instead, this vinyl edition, as the completists out there will note, it comes in mammoth 6xLP green vinyl form, spanning select cuts from Bragg's many collaborations and rarities over the years (including those with the likes of the band Wilco and Joe Henry).

Review: It should take about two seconds to realise, if you didn't already know, that Eddie Vedder is the voice of Pearl Jam, one of the finest rock bands to come out of the US in the late stages of the 20th Century, and one of the outfit's four (yes, four) guitarists. Ranked by none other than Rolling Stone magazine as the seventh finest lead singer of all time, it's safe to say he's the kind of pedigree you want to venture out as a soloist.

Now four albums in his own name deep, Earthling may not be rewriting any rule books or pushing boundaries and our perception of what's possible, but it is an incredibly well conceived and executed heavy rock 'n' roll album, showcasing a man with seemingly infinite creative energy, here unleashing a combination of heartfelt alt, breakneck garage-grunge, and searing big room stuff that you'll struggle to forget after hearing just once. Songwriting and guitar work at their finest.

Review: Australian band The Church released their fifth album Starfish in 1988. At the time, it was a rather surprising commercial success, most notably in America. The lead single 'Under The Milky Way' made it into the Top 30 of the Billboard chart and the album itself got Gold certification. This reissue features an expanded tracklist with 18 instead of the original 10 tunes spread across four sides of wax. The bonus material includes acoustic versions of 'Under The Milky Way' and 'Antenna' and other studio recordings that have been 100 percent analog-mastered from the original analogue tapes by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound.

Review: Talk about taking your sweet time. Anyone want to hazard a guess at how long Blinking Lights & Other Revelations took to finish? Thought not. In truth, Eels started work on it in 1998, but it wouldn't see the light of day until 2005. Marking the start of a new era for the band, contractually at least - their deal with David Geffen and Steven Spielberg's DreamWorks Records having dissolved the previous year - the album was high concept, too.
As per frontman E, writing on the band's official website at the time of Blinking Lights' release, the record is about "God and all the questions relating to the subject of God." Suddenly the extended production period makes sense. Then you see it has 33 tracks listed on the sleeve and it all becomes clear. A classic piece of alternative rock with big, bold ideas, it should always be remembered as one of the first landmarks to come from America this millennium.

Review: RECOMMENDED
It's the sixth studio album by English rock greats the Alan Parsons Project, with both the eponymous man and his partner in crime Eric Woolfson are on particularly fine form. Originally released in 1982, the fact it was nominated for Best Engineered Album at the GRAMMY Awards a year on, and then won the GRAMMY for Best Immersive Audio Album in 2019 tells you everything there is to know about how well produced this is.

Nevertheless, critics at the time weren't so quick to laud praise on the record, with one Philadelphia Inquirer write-up labelling the release "hopelessly banal", and likening the instrumentation to Paul Mccartney as a manic depressive. Skip forward a few years, though, and it was heralded as a soft pop triumph, combining artistic lyricism with immediate chart accessibility.

Review: Five decades on and Devo are rightly recognised as a cultural treasure from the early days of US new wave, but even by the time they released their Brian Eno-produced debut album in 1978 they were five years in and way ahead of the curve. As the band reflect on half a century at the cutting edge, Rhino have pulled together an expansive retrospective which comes in many different iterations. This particular edition, pressed on red and blue double vinyl, gathers together 25 classic and lesser known cuts from the band's considerable archives, housed with stunning artwork in a gatefold sleeve and is sure to become a collectors' item.

Review: One of the most elusive records ever released by the New York pioneers, Sweet Sister Ray is one of the Velvet Underground's few live records, and one of the last bits of live material to feature John Cale's input. A near-40-minute jam of experiments and improvisation - captured at the La Cave club, Ohio, in late April 1968 - 'Sweet Sister Ray' cuts across four sides of wax, and is something of a misnomer, nodding to the White Light/White Heat's 'Sister Ray' but otherwise sounding nothing like it. Popular opinion suggests this record is allegedly a rare window into some early follow-up sequels to 'Sister Ray', though the utterly distinct vibe of this performance makes this a hard claim to verify. Whatever the case, this reissue is sure to reignite your inner private detective; its riffing walls of bluesy, Lynchian hypno-fuzz are sure to mesmerically draw its fans into one of art rock's most enduring cold cases.

Review: A musical polymath like no other, the late Arthur Russell turned his hand to a bewildering variety of different musical styles, from avant-garde torch songs to pounding disco, yet all imbued with his otherworldly songwriting skill and richly emotional voice. This posthumous compilation, however, collects together the more oddly accessible material that he created, in largely acoustic and country styles. The cowboy hat on the sleeve may be strangely appropriate here, but more than this, the blend of plaintive melancholy and freewheeling charm can only leave the listener wondering how Arthur Russell managed to avoid mainstream success in his all-too-brief career. A strange and beguiling transmission from a unique talent.

Review: Spanning their more than 20 years together, Strung Out have established themselves as stalwarts of the punk scene with an ability to organically evolve and continue to influence their peers. As one of the first acts signed to Fat Wreck Chords, they quickly became known for their innovative blend of melodic skate-punk and aggressive metal-infused riffs. Over the course of their first three studio full-lengths they successfully honed their sound into a recognizable brand, setting them apart from their counterparts in both style and execution. In the spirit of capturing that distinct era in Strung Out's history the idea for a box set and reissues came about. Titled "Volume One", this box set showcases "Another Day in Paradise", "Suburban Teenage Wasteland Blues", and "Twisted By Design", all fully remixed by Ryan Greene (NOFX, No Use For a Name, Lagwagon, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes), helping to display the power of these songs along with nuances previously unheard. All the artwork has been reworked from the original pieces and now includes deluxe foldout inserts with never before seen photos and extensive liner notes from the band.

The real gem of the box set (in the works for a decade!) is the first-ever Strung Out DVD. Made up of a full 2012 concert where they performed the "Suburban" and "Twisted" albums in their entirety, all professionally filmed and recorded, the DVD is further enhanced with footage from the '90s: shows, tour antics, interviews, behind the scenes stuff; a treasure trove of classic Strung Out. The vinyl box set includes the rare album "The Skinny Years... Before We Got Fat", remastered and on vinyl for the first time.

Review: A triumph of enigmatic melody and an enduring document of one artist's personal vision, Matt Johnson's 1983 album still sounds as unique and affecting thirty years on as it did on its release. Replete with bittersweet gems like "This Is The Day" and "Uncertain Smile", "Soul Mining" is an album of paradoxes; too deft of touch to be rock, too weighty to be pop, it defies genre, and still sounds fresh despite being a product of Thatcher's '80s. Moreover, this album, which Johnson would arguably never top, is testimony to the good cheer that can be spread by even the most perennially gloomy songsmith.

Review: RECOMMENDED
Tribal psychobilly blues, anyone? Welcome to The Gun Club, where the first rule is that everyone should listen to at least one album by the Jeffrey Lee Pierce-fronted, benchmark-setting, Los Angeline punk outfit. Well, actually, before that we should probably explain exactly why this lot broke the mould when they first landed in the very late-1970s.

At a time when everyone in the US was looking to genre pioneers like Iggy & The Stooges and the New York Dolls for inspiration, this team opted to roll time back much, much further, and start to bring elements of blues, country, and rockabilly to the punk party. The result was a blueprint which has, to some extent, had a huge impact on an array of later greats: Ezra Furman, Horton Heat, Jim Jones, BC Camplight... to name but a few.

Review: Dodgy's first ever box set gets served up here by Demon Records and it covers the bands most essential and classic period in the 90s. It comes on four heavyweight records and includes the highly sought after three classic studio albums 'The Dodgy Album', 'Homegrown' and Free Peace Sweet', none of which have ever been repressed before. As well as the music are track notes from Math, Nigel and Andy, and a booklet including rare photographs and memorabilia, plus an introduction from 6Music DJ Matt Everitt. They were a cult live act and that translated well to record as this new collection proves.

Review: Considering the status Nirvana hold, even now, almost two decades after Kurt Cobain's death, it's surprising when you consider the scarcity of live recordings of the band that are available. Their legendary MTV Unplugged performance is one of the best known, but overall when people today talk about the immense significance and inherent talent of the grunge pioneers it usually involves citing studio work.

Perhaps this is because the number of people who ever got to see them live is and will continue to dwindle simply because time has a habit of doing that to experiences of the past. Smells Like Live Spirit is the answer to this problem, a mammoth six disc collection of the outfit giving it their all on stage, explaining everything there is to about why they were held in such high regard on the circuit while active.

Review: With a history dating back to 1912, at various points being used for different purposes including an ice rink and ballroom, San Francisco's The Fillmore - which began hosting bands properly as far back as the mid-1950s - is the kind of venue any act would love (or kill?) to play. Skip forward almost 50 years and My Morning Jacket understandably made the decision to record not just this album, but also a film, while performing two nights at the address in question. Okonokos is the end result, a powerhouse LP that really showcases the inherent strength of the Louisville, Kentucky outfit. Never straying too far from a kind of stadium take on country rock, but also refusing not to recognise the subtly psychedelic nature of those genres.

Review: Charlotte Gainsbourg, daughter of Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin, worked tirelessly on 'Rest' for seven years before it was ready for release. The effect of this time spent in gestation is palpable, giving a sense of her meditative and contemplative process of songwriting. 'Rest' draws from a broad palette of sounds such as alt-rock and coldwave, with more upbeat moments of disco and pop. 'Rest' is an intensely personal album with emotional foundations in grief and family ties, and its deft structure and writing shows off Gainsbourg's ability to use light and shade - here as melancholy and hope - to powerful effect.

Review: Beach House's eight studio record Once Twice Melody is a brand new double album presented across four chapters with a total of 18 tunes in all. The band experiments widely across them, with many different structures and styles including some tunes without drums, some hooked round acoustic guitar and others that are mostly electric with meandering melodies. Of course, the signature organs, drum machines and keys that fans know and expect from Beach House aka Victoria Legrand, lead singer and multi-instrumentalist, and Alex Scally, guitarist and multi-instrumentalist, are also present and very correct.

Review: Say what you will about greatest hits collections, sometimes we really need to collate the biggest achievements of a band in order to fully appreciate just how much they have given us and how many trails they've blazed. Killing Joke certainly fit the bill, given they helped post-punk transition into synthier terrain, made industrial gothicism accessible and levelled the ground for grunge to rise, all in their first decade.

As should be the case, then, The Singles Collection 1979 - 2012 oozes quality and delivers bangers by the sweat-bucket-load. Of course some of the epic, early anthems like 'Birds of a Feather', 'Eighties' and first commercial smash 'Love Like Blood' will be immediately recognised by everyone, and evidence the band's overriding influence. But there's also so much here all-but-obsessed fans will be able to discover or rediscover about their legacy, too. And not before time.

Review: Here comes a special double vinyl box set edition of Beach House's latest album, Once Twice Melody, which was the first one the band themselves have ever produced in its entirety. It was recorded in three different locations - Pachyderm Studio in Cannon Falls, United Studio in Los Angeles, and Apple Orchard Studios in Baltimore. The band used a real and full live string ensemble for the first time, too, and David Campbell took care of arrangements. It is a double album that features 18 songs presented in four chapters that take in many different sound and structures centred around acoustic guitar, some around drums, and some around electronics.

Review: One of many names in the pantheons of Tokyo's electronic music triumphs, despite their acclaim, reverence among boffins, and the sprinkling of high profile UK remixers that helped spread their output further (copies of reworkings by The Black Dog, Autechre and Global Communication fetch a fair song on the resale market) most will never have heard about Nav Katze. Their loss, and one we'd like to put right if possible.

Formed in 1984 as a trio - Naoko Iimura (guitar), Miwako Yamaguchi (vocals and bass), and Shino Furutachi (drums) - the band would put out two well received record on SWITCH before migrating to the far more prominent label Victor Music Industries for 1991's Kanki, at which point three became two with Furutachi stepping down. This package showcases not only why their original material was so sought after, with trance notes, IDM and ambient and pop meeting in beautiful soundscapes - but also what can happen when new parties get involved, with remixes from Aphex Twin, Sun Electric and Disjecta included.

Review: Demon Music's new Suede compilation spans the band's whole career and is presented no fewer than six sales of vinyl. The band's first era ran from 1993 to 2002 and took in five monstrously successful albums including their Mercury music prize-winning self-titled debut. Fans will argue the Dog Man Star follow up in 1994 was even better, and it sure was another commercial success, with the hit-packed Coming Up in 1996 another big one. Tracks from all these and more as well as some favourite B-sides and non-album tracks also make the cut.

Review: We've been treated to reissues of everything else from PJ Harvey's spectacular catalogue, so it's only right we get a chance to savour the deeper cuts that shape out the persona of the high priestess of alternative rock. Gathering together an exhaustive 59 B sides, demos and previously unreleased tracks, this six-LP box set takes us into the heart of Polly Jean's writing process, showing the raw power in the songwriting when it's just her voice and an overdriven guitar, and showing us the broader possibilities of songs which didn't make the cut for the studio albums. This is a true treasure of music getting the authoritative release she deserves.

Review: Of all the grunge era survivors, The Smashing Pumpkins are surely one of the most grandiose. Staying true to that premise, Billy Corgan revels in a majority original line-up being back together to create a whopping triple-sized concept album which picks up the thread from Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and Machina/The Machines of God. Atum is billed as a rock opera served in three acts, veering from heavier sounds bordering on metal to the catchier, poppier sound heard on lead single 'Beguiled' and into more esoteric territory. This four-vinyl edition gathers together the entire magnum opus in one lavish box set - a must-have for devotees of the veteran US rockers.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Record sleeve damaged, product in working order***

Clan of Xymox are one of those bands that represent what is so fantastic about music - passionate players who have focused on honing their craft, and exploring variants on the original blueprint while embracing new ideas, for over 40 years now. The Amsterdam group arrived amid a rising tide of synth wave and, for many, represent the original vanguard of darkwave, helping push a sound early which would later be adopted by some huge names (The Cure, Gary Numan, to name but two).

We find them now four decades deep, then, and still packing fresh thoughts and a hunger to experiment and explore. A masterpiece of goth synth rock, packed with an atmosphere befitting the year in which it was born (2021), Limbo is the ultimate soundtrack to a dystopian future that has long-since become the present, an age when hope is not dead, but shares its bed with despair.

Review: Evand Dando and co broke through to the mainstream with the sublime, sunny songwriting of 1992's It's A Shame About Ray, then managed to sustain their time at the top the following year with the Slade-referencing Come On Feel The Lemonheads. It's an altogether bigger and superfically impressive prospect, with guests like Rick James and Belinda Carlisle making the contributors' list and a production job from The Robb Brothers which elevates it beyond the slacker rock tag they'd had until the is point. It also spawned their biggest ever single - 'Into Your Arms' - and a host of other chart successes, including the excellent anthem 'Big Gay Heart', which saw them neatly distancing themselves from the jock rock category that other contemporaries like Nirvana quickly found themeslves slipping into.

Review: The Wedding Present's 24 Songs revisits the legendary indie band's 2002 project which was to put out one new 7 " single a month for the entire year. They all came as double-sided 7"s and made for a now much sought-after box set. If you missed out, worry not, because this album collects them all together as full-length versions that also includes five bonus recordings including one featuring The Wedding Present's first guitarist, Peter Solowka. The milestone project encapsulated perfectly the band's sound over the past 30 years and also made them only the second-ever artists to have 12 Top 40 tunes in the charts in a calendar year after Elvis himself.

Review: Quarter is but one of many albums that put synth legends Ultravox on the map. While their earlier efforts like Vienna had established the band as hitmakers, it was Quarter that heard them indulge their more ambitious leanings, with the duo enlisting the newfound aid of producer George Martin, who was allegedly a far more uncompromising producer to work with than their prior brain, Conny Plank. The result is a refined and mega detailed synthpop sound, tempered by many rewrites, overdubs and take-Ns. Now comes the deluxe edition courtesy of Chrysalis.

Review: The sixth album by American scene/screamo band AFI hears a timely 20th Anniversary reissue here. Hinting at a more gothic direction and an abandonment of their former footings in hardcore punk and horrorpunk, we hear Davey Havok and co. move through fast-paced punk and spitty vocals as ever, harking back to a much earlier time (2003) in which this genre sadly held more weight. Like a high school drama plunged into a nightmarish vampire apocalypse, the blend of sounds here are perfect for a late-night Twilight or Buffy binge - with sad piano interludes interspersed with grungey axe washouts and ruminations on hopelessness and despair.

Review: Depeche Mode's new album Memento Mori is a rather bittersweet one for fans - they are of course happy to hear fresh material from their favour electronic doom mongers, but it is also the last time they will hear music from the group featuring corer member Andrew Fletcher, who suddenly passed away at the start of the sessions. Remaining members Dave Gahan and Martin Gore wondered if they would carry on, but carry on they did. And we're glad they did, as this is one of their best albums in years with darkness abounding. Their progression in their latest years have heard them move into darker, peakier, sadder and more industrial themes while drawing on deathly topoi.

This new box set features all six UK singles, pulled from the two albums - 1990's 'Bellybutton' and 1993's 'Spilt Milk' - (including the 4-track 'Scary-Go-Round' EP) which are pressed on multi-coloured 7" vinyl. Additionally, a unique bonus 7" featuring two covers, one of which is 'Think About Your Troubles', a tribute to Harry Nilsson, recorded by Roger Manning Jr and Andy Sturmer in February 1994, a few weeks after Nilsson's death ("it was the last thing Jellyfish did as a group", Roger recalls).

The audio has all been remastered especially for vinyl and as well as the singles in picture sleeves, this box set includes a 64-page booklet with detailed track-by-track guides from Roger Manning Jr, Jason Falkner, Chris Manning, Tim Smith, Eric Dover and band members and a newly written essay by Maura Johnston. The booklet is packed with previously unseen photographs, rare memorabilia and promotional items.

Review: The 1992 film Singles is famous for its pairing of soundtrack and theme. It's a film about the lives and loves of a bunch of Seattle grunge geeks as they encircle the local music scene. Fittingly, director Cameron Crowe (known for Almost Famous and several Pearl Jam documentaries) effectively had his work cut out for him when choosing music to soundtrack it; contributions from Alice In Chains, Jimi Hendrix, The Smashing Pumpkins, Chris Cornell, Mother Love Bone and Mudhoney make this a classic in the ultra-niche realm of grunge soundtracks and a bittersweet precursor to the 'death' of the genre by the internet only a few years later.

Review: After Pixies split, Frank Black struck out on his own with a backing band The Catholics and recorded six albums between 1998 and 2003. Capturing a raw, in-the-moment feeling, these records were all recorded live to two-track tape, showing off Black's gift as a songwriter and performer in an unburnished fashion. It's been a long time since those albums were available on vinyl, and now they're bundled together in this exhaustive box set from Demon Music Group, including first-time pressings for Dog In The Sand, Black Letter Days and Devil's Workshop. All 80 tracks have been remastered, and they come accompanied by a 32-page booklet featuring liner notes from producer Ben Mumphrey and rare photography from Steve Gullick.

Review: "Anthology" serves as a celebration of The Clean, a band whose influence extends so far beyond their New Zealand home that even if you have never heard of The Clean before, you have surely heard of some of the bands (Pavement, Yo La Tengo, and Superchunk, to name a few) who have been influenced by their unique blend of homemade garage rock, hook-filled melodies and psychedelic experimentalism.

The album is a compilation from across The Clean's legendary career, which began in 1981 and continues today. Merge originally released the two CD "Anthology" in 2003, but now this collection is available on quadruple LP. "Anthology" kicks off with The Clean's call-to-arms debut "Tally Ho!"; the story of the infectious track's $60 recording bill is now legendary. It continues with the early EPs "Boodle Boodle Boodle" and "Great Sounds Great" in their entirety. The hits "Billy Two", "Anything Could Happen", "Beatnik" and "Getting Older", live favorites like "Point That Thing Somewhere Else" and instrumentals "Fish" and "At the Bottom" all serve up memories of the joyous noise that characterized The Clean of that time. These recordings, mostly made by the band with Chris Knox and Doug Hood at the helm of the 4-track, capture the bright, raw sound of a classic garage band.

After a brief breakup, the band recorded "Vehicle" in 1989, made in three days and engineered by Alan Moulder (Smashing Pumpkins, Nine Inch Nails, My Bloody Valentine). The sounds of "Vehicle" and the two albums that followed it, "Modern Rock" (1994) and "Unknown Country" (1996), make up the bulk of discs 3 and 4 of the vinyl "Anthology". In addition to selections from these full-length recordings, "Anthology" includes two songs released only on a US 7 inch and two that appeared on a bonus flexidisc with the "Modern Rock" LP.

Review: Red Hot Chili Peppers are back with their twelfth studio album, and most significantly it welcomes back John Frusciante to the fold after he amicably departed the band back in 2009 to focus on his electronic music production. Rick Rubin is in the production seat, and overall it's the sound of the Chili Peppers doing what they do best, with all the classic ingredients. From the epic anthem 'Black Summer' to moody ballad 'Not The One' and the playful funk of 'Poster Child', there's everything you could want from the band as they stride into their fourth decade of active service.

Review: Since her debut EP and LP arrived in 2019, Arlo Parks has grown into one of the most vital voices in modern British soul. Following on from 2021's Collapsed In Sunbeams album, My Soft Machine comes on mellow and magnificent, backed up by a strong cast of collaborators but very much steered by Parks at the helm. There's space for crossover pop hooks on the likes of the Paul Hepworth-produced 'Weightless' while Phoebe Bridgers lends her skills to 'Pegasus', and everything feeds into a universal dose of ear-catching neo-soul and artful pop fit for every home. This special edition of My Soft Machine comes pressed in translucent pink wax, housed in a black cloth tote bag and with a friendship bracelet to cement the bond between Parks and her audience.

Review: The man from Japan (the band, not the country) wandered off and started flying solo in 1984, exploring a host of strange and often surreal sounds with partners in tunes ranging from Ryuichi Sakamoto (who actually is from Japan) to Bill Nelson. As the 1990s gave way to the new millennium, his style only became more daring and less predictable, adventures in a kind of minimal free improvisation, it's at this point we find ourselves on Sleepwalkers.

Not an album per se, but a retrospective compilation comprising work from the first decade of this century, perhaps what's so striking is just how much can be done with relatively few elements. Of course, tracks like 'Word Citizen', 'Wonderful World' and 'The Day The Earth Stole Heaven' are, well, not maximalist, but certainly made up of more parts, but the real stand out stuff - 'Thermal''s spoken word ambient, the lo-fi elec-pop of 'Sugarfuel', and 'Transit''s delicately textured oddness - prove less is more.

Review: New Order live is something of a rite of passage for most UK indie, dance and electronic fans. The strength of that appeal not just indica-tive of longevity and a constant cross-genre sphere of influence that has shaped their work but also the reputation for delivering the re-sulting sounds with aplomb in front of an audience. If that's not too much of an understatement.

Whether that can ever be recreated in album format is an eternal ques-tion extending well-beyond one of Mancunia's biggest pop exports, but this recording of an encounter at London's iconic Alexandra Palace proves at least some of the magic transfers, packing anthems from throughout their storied single and album history into a work that feels both unpredictable yet wholly razor sharp.

Review: "NINE INCH NAILS' GROUNDBREAKING DEBUT ALBUM
REMASTERED AND RE-RELEASED

Fans can now revisit the conception of Nine Inch Nails. Trent Reznor's Null Corporation has teamed with UMe/The Bicycle Music Company to release Pretty Hate Machine: 2010 Remaster on November 22, 2010. After completing the score for David Fincher's The Social Network, Reznor oversaw the digital remastering of Pretty Hate Machine from the newly unearthed original tapes with engineer Tom Baker (whose NIN credits include The Downward Spiral, Broken, The Fragile, With Teeth and Ghosts). This remastered version includes an eleventh track, a cover of Queen's ''Get Down Make Love,'' originally the B-side to the ''Sin'' single and produced by Al Jourgensen. Rob Sheridan, NIN's longtime art director, has also re-imagined the packaging of Pretty Hate Machine under Reznor's supervision.

As a young musician in Cleveland, Ohio, Reznor took a job at a local recording studio and employed unused studio time to develop his own material. The nascent album was later recorded with his favorite producers including Flood/Mark Ellis (U2, Depeche Mode, PJ Harvey), John Fryer (Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil), Adrian Sherwood (Ministry, Cabaret Voltaire) and Keith LeBlanc (Tackhead). The result was the first Nine Inch Nails album, 1989's Pretty Hate Machine. All songs were written, arranged, programmed and performed by Reznor. The album featured the breakthrough singles ''Sin,'' ''Down In It'' and ''Head Like A Hole,'' and ultimately sold over 3 million copies, reaching Triple Platinum sales status. In the wake of the album's initial underground success, NIN soon developed a reputation as one of the best live acts in rock and joined the inaugural Lollapalooza tour in 1991. NIN have since sold more than 18 million albums, collected Grammy® Awards and headlined arenas, amphitheaters and festivals worldwide.

The Bicycle Music Company acquired the rights to Pretty Hate Machine from a division of Prudential Securities in the spring of 2010. It was Bicycle's intention from the onset to enable Reznor to regain some control of this lost piece of NIN's legacy, resulting in this artist approved 2010 reissue of one of music's most groundbreaking and influential albums.

Reznor is currently working on new music as a member of the group How To Destroy Angels, continuing his Nine Inch Nails efforts and composing for future film score projects.

Review: The Smashing Pumpkins' transformation from melodic alt-rock deities to synth-driven electronic boppers is complete. Well, almost. The titular single certainly fits that easy narrative, laser beam chords and string refrains bursting from behind a track that bounces with a light disco punk energy. In truth, of course, there has always been far more to Bill Corgan et al than the alternative rock tag often implies, and even right back to their formative years the crew were toying with expectations.

2018's Rick Rubin-produced Shine And Oh So Bright... album may have emphasised their rock roots, but now we're given their creative juices in full flow on their poppiest outing yet, partly inspired by the roster of seminal Chicago label Wax Trax!, the US home to Underworld and The KLF among others. Needless to say, though, the Pumpkins make it sound like they've lived here all along; testament to their unwavering dedication to trying new ideas and knack at pulling them off.

Review: 25 years after it was originally unveiled, Nine Inch Nails' soundtrack for the video game Quake - a dark and doom-laden first person shoot-'em-up - still sounds surprisingly intense and unsettling. Their decision to write and record the soundtrack was itself pioneering - Quake was one of the first games to seek sounds from a big-name act - while its pitch-black musical blend of fractured electronic sounds, dark ambient sweeps and creepy, largely beat-free soundscapes was undoubtedly ahead of the curve. Remarkably, this meticulously re-mastered vinyl edition marks the first time the soundtrack has been available on anything other than a CD bundled with copies of the game. An undoubted classic of its type.
