Review: In Outer Wilds, the player commands an elusive character in a quest to explore a solar system stuck in a 22-minute time loop that ends with the sun exploding. Tasked with ending the time loop, the player must navigate the alien wastes and ruins of the Nomai; with iam8bit's latest release of Andrew Prahlow's score, we can now put ourselves in said player character's shoes in finer cinematic detail. Prahlow's prolific score is the kind of hopeful, transcendent soundtrack that instantly readjusts your demeanor to a state of awe, reminding you just how vast the universe is. There's no better way to explore your inner self - proverbially roasting marshmallows alongside banjo strumming - than with this beautiful, poignant masterpiece of an album.

Review: This four-vinyl box set features music from the original The Last of Us and The Last of Us Volume 2 albums, including the renowned main theme. Argentinian composer and two-time Academy Awards-winner Gustavo Santaolalla crafted the emotionally resonant score, characterised by intimate, guitar-driven sounds. Summer 2023 will always be remembered for the cinematic battle that was Barbie vs Oppenheimer, two polar opposite Hollywood smashes that spawned a wave of memes. Both managed to break records but one stands out when it comes to the soundtrack - and that is Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, the three-hour epic about the genesis of the atomic bomb. Written by Ludwig Goransson it now arrives in full, on nice opaque orange vinyl, via Mondo. The music matches the deep trip into the psyche of a singular American mind J. Robert Oppenheimer with plenty of drama and immersive, emotional moments.

Impex Records is shares a new, audiophile-quality LP release of Bud Shank's pivotal 1961 classic, Barefoot Adventure. With original compositions arranged by Shank for Bruce Brown's surf film of the same name, this is a swinging, hard-driving jazz session by six top-flight musicians at the height of their careers: Bud Shank (alto and baritone), Bob Cooper (tenor), Carmell Jones (trumpet), Dennis Budimir (guitar), Gary Peacock (bass), Shelly Manne (drums). The original Pacific Jazz recording features excellent sonics and showcases Shank at his most adventurous, toying with an advanced confidence and sophistication. Remastered and cut to lacquer by Kevin Gray from the original 1961 analogue master tape, this ultimate vinyl edition of Barefoot Adventure will satiate the most demanding audiophile and jazz enthusiast alike!

Review: The Matrix film remains a cult classic many years after it was first released to great acclaimed. To tie in with the release of the surprise fourth move in the series - The Matrix: Resurrection - Real Gone Music is now reissuing the original soundtrack on vinyl four years after they first put it out. This limited edition gatefold version features stills from the film and all the original tracks are pressed on swirled blue and white vinyl. There are high-speed thrillers like Propellerheads' 'Spybreak! (Short One)' next to gothic rock anthems from Marilyn Manson twisted cyborg techno bangers from Rob Zombie.

Review: John Hughes' films are a genre all to themselves - sentimental coming of age flicks that embody 1980s small town America like few others managed. Hughes also knew how to use great pop music of the time to capture a moment in his movies, and so the concept of The John Hughes Mixtapes is an inspired one if you want to feels a sweeping sense of nostalgia for a bygone era. This lavish six-LP boxset features classic tracks from movies such as Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Weird Science, Pretty In Pink, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Some Kind Of Wonderful, Planes, Trains And Automobiles, She's Having A Baby, The Great Outdoors and Uncle Buck.

Review: If you've not seem the movie Oppenheimer chances are you've had your head buried deep in the sand for the past year or so. The multi-Academy Award-winning scientific epic charts the development of the first nuclear bomb and subsequent realisation, on the part of the man who cracked the formula, that such terrifying power should never have been brought into our world. Directed by Christopher Nolan, outspoken critics of the master filmmaker may by now be wondering if he'll ever make another movie with a linear storyline - so much of his output is anything but these days. However, that slightly surreal, disjointed, era-jumping approach to storytelling necessitates a soundtrack that combines stunning classical and more avant-garde experimentations. Which Ludwig Goransson delivered with spectacular effect. Now those tones are yours to own.

Review: While Fritz Lang's Metropolis has enjoyed reams of revisionist soundtracks in the near-century since it was released, Robert Weine's The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari has remained a more cult concern of Weimar-era cinema. Karl Bartos, one of the early members of Kraftwerk, has indulged his passion for the art of this unique period between world wars, when technology and art was changing as rapidly as the world around them. Employing his considerable experience and well-appointed studio to the task of re-soundtracking, Bartos has created this vibrant new score for Weine's film, pressed up here on double vinyl with an accompanying 16-page booklet.

Review: It's astounding to think that Mother 2 was released in 1994. A landmark moment for the SNES video game system, it arrived five years after its predecessor, and as such enjoyed the benefits of what was then a next generation platform. Felt in terms of graphical and gameplay capabilities, suffice to say the upgraded hardware was also capable of capturing much more engaging and imaginative music. Here we are, almost 30 years on from when this sequel first captivated people, and the score itself gets a re-release on vinyl. Again drafting Hirokazu Tanaka and Keiichi Suzuki as composers, the pair would later explain how much more freedom they had due to the technological progress made between this and its predecessor. Translated into a music review, think deep, atmospheric ambient constructed from many layers of sound. A futuristic sonic trip into the far reaches of the cosmos that still holds up within the genre today.

Review: Franz Waxman's contributions to the history of cinema, and its scores, cannot be understated. Having provided music for movies including Sunset Boulevard, Stalag 17, and Rear Window, he was working at the top of his game right through to around a year before his untimely death, aged 60, garnering 150 credits in total, with 12 Academy Award nominations and two Oscars to his name. The Bride of Frankenstein was one of the nominated titles, and it's certainly an evocative listen. Written in 1935, it's packed with the kind of tense string arrangements that once helped create brooding atmospheres from black and white early talkies. Grand at times, in other moments teetering on the brink of explosive cacophony, or poised on a knife edge.

Review: Iam8bit do vital work in releasing the soundtracks of contemporary video games, many of which may have otherwise never heard any semblance of independent appreciation. This record is the soundtrack for the game Eastward, an adventure RPG game developed by Pixpil and published by Chucklefish, released in 2021. A whopping 73 tracks appear, all composed by one Joel Corelitz, who gradates a diverse range of paints on an emotional rollercoaster of a sonic palette, reflecting the game's story of a miner and a mysterious girl who embark on a journey across a post-apocalyptic, effective open world.

Review: Those interested in Japanese cartoons should know Space Adventure Cobra. First broadcast in 1982, it is now considered one of the country's finest animated TV series. This triple-vinyl box set celebrates Kentano Haneda and Yuji Ono's music from the series, combining compositions featured on the show with unheard extended versions and tracks that never made the cut first time round. Musically, it's a mix of Japanese disco, sax-sporting lounge jazz, jazz-funk, neo-classical movements and eccentric interludes, all doused in layers of cosmic dust and stargazing colour. The release also comes packaged with a 12-page booklet telling the story of the series and the making of the appealing, endlessly entertaining soundtrack.

Review: Not seen Exception? OK, let's start there. The Netflix series is at the vanguard of new adult animation epics. Setting its scene(s) in the future, we follow a space mission crew desperately searching for a world that can be terraformed in order to sustain life, humans already having been driven from Earth. It's a stark and foreboding journey which resonates almost too much in an age when the climate crisis is just beginning to show us what happens next.
For something like this you need a score of serious standards, so who better to draft than the master himself, Ryuchi Sakamoto. One of Japan's most respected, revered, and iconic musical minds is pretty much capable of creating anything, from curious pop to the kind of atmospheric overtures, strange incidentals, ambient arrangements and nerve-rattling movements that define this soundtrack.

Review: Joseph Kosinski, famous for his direction on 'Tron: Legacy' scored by Daft Punk, wanted to go a completely different direction for 2013's 'Oblivion' starring Tom Cruise. An emotional, epic soundtrack composed by French electronic act M83 was the only real option for him - a match made in heaven. Immediately, 'Jack's Dream' and 'Waking Up' are cinematic and vast in scope with blaring strings that swell in ways that only movie soundtracks can. A complete departure from Anthony Gonzalez's megahit 'Midnight City', 'Oblivion' is an orchestral affair that is bold and punchy, with soft and ethereal ambient patches scattered throughout. The title track is a major standout, featuring Norwegian talent Susanne Sundfor, a favourite vocalist and frequent collaborator of Royksopp. Expect the unexpected, but prepare to be amazed.

Review: This heft triple vinyl album from Demon Records finds the label served up a narrated TV soundtrack from the very first series of Doctor Who. Back then it was William Hartnell who took the role of the Doctor with a supporting cast featuring Jacqueline Hill as Barbara and Carole Ann Ford as Susan, with Stephen Dartnell, Ilona Rodgers and Lorne Cossette. Norma Kay made all the instrumental music the features underneath the dialogue while the famous theme music was of course the work of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop.

Review: After the success of the first Alessandroni Proibito box set, which sold out in pre-sale before it even hit the stores, Four Flies is proudly back with Volume 2 of the compilation. This new release too features five exclusive 7" singles, housing a total of ten seriously rare tunes. All previously unreleased in physical format, the tracks have been carefully selected from the soundtracks of five obscure Italian films from the late 70s - sexy flicks that flirted with the line between erotic and explicit, and which are now largely forgotten, having been out of circulation for decades. As was the case with the previous volume of the compilation, Alessandroni's music rises above the films' flimsy plots, improvised actors, and amateurish production, exuding his distinctive touch thanks to the (typically Italian) artisanal approach he took to his musical craft. The composer let his creativity run free, playing with his instruments at home as if he were in his own little amusement park; trying to have fun and produce something entertaining and captivating with just the few means at his disposal.

Review: Having slowly become known as 'Batman for the clubbing era', Matt Reeves' new 2022 film version of the Batman story had several techno bits thrown in. But for the most part, its spectacle was locked in by this swelling classical soundtrack by Michael Giacchino. Nearly two hours of emotion adorn all sides of this 3xLP, bringing fresh darkness to a renowned series - probably one of the most re-done franchises in the world, in fact.

Review: Baki is one of the best-selling Japanese anime and manga series of all time; the story centres on a quintessential shonen coming-of-age trope, funnelled into the character of Baki Hanma, who tirelessly trains and tests his fighting skills against a variety of different opponents in deadly hand-to-hand combat, with the ultimate hope of becoming a powerful warrior like his father. Kenji Fujisawa's original soundtrack for the anime series, now streaming on Netflix, is the perfect translation of this always-affecting theme; a whopping 60 tracks are spread across 3 vinyl discs in respective illustrated sleeves; Fujisawa's tense, eye-of-the-tiger timpani-bangers, which mesh well with NIN-style industrial rock, are perfect for the invocation of Baki's constant sense of confrontation and self-becoming. This record also comes with ane exclusive shikishi art print, as well as a four-page booklet.

Review: Surely one of the greatest horror films of all time, Dawn Of The Dead transcended the zombie format to make some incisive points about human society with more than a few laughs thrown in for good measure. The score is just as brilliant as the on-screen action, made up of cues from the De Wolfe library and peppered with some stand-out tunes like The Pretty Things' 'Cause I'm A Man'. Those songs have been included in this deluxe, triple-vinyl edition housed in a gatefold sleeve featuring artwork from Ruiz Burgos and packing extra booklets, essays and all the high-end extras you expect from a Waxwork reissue.

Review: In the mid-80s, Svitlana Okhrimenko, Oleksandr Kohanovs'kyi, and Tamila Mazur, students at the Reinhold Glier Kyiv Academy of Music, formed the foundation of Cukor Bila Smert. Their blend of music and camaraderie led to the addition of Eugene Taran, who further helped shape the band's vision. Dubbed Sugar - White Death, their ironic moniker challenged media sensationalism and amidst endless musical exploration, they crafted two albums in 1988 and 1989. The band's unique "sugar calypso sound" emerged, a blend of Kohanovs'kyi's music and lyrics by Okhrimenko and Taran. A significant studio session in 1990 yielded tracks featured on the Mannered Music compilation which sparked international interest. Their journey concluded in 1993 with the release of "Selo" by Koka Records, and now some of the best bits make it onto this new collection.

Review: Yoko Kanni's seminal "Tank! Gold: Cowboy Bebop' soundtrack is now a quarter of a century old and to mark that occasion it has been pressed up for this special 25th Anniversary Edition across a double album including a booklet courtesy of Victor Entertainment. The anime movie itself is one of the most famous of the genre and follows the adventures of the crew of Bebop, a bounty hunter ship that chases criminals and turns them into the Inter Solar System Police for reward, Kanno's zany fusion of rock, blues and jazz oozes cool. It's a musical mix of Afro-Cuban rhythms, New York horns and plenty more.
