Review: Tame Impala's breakthrough album 'Lonerism' celebrates its tenth anniversary with a special edition reissue. Through tracks like 'Elephant', 'Feels Like We Only Go Backwards' and 'Endors Toi', the album is known for introducing psychedelia to a new generation of hungry music fans in the early 2010s, and features Kevin Parker's distinctive falsetto vocals and intricate guitarwork throughout. The reissue here includes various bonuses, demos and "assorted sketches", casting renewed light on an important record for both the music-loving public, and an Aussie band/project destined for stardom.

Review: Pink Siifu's haunting, uncompromising masterpiece 'Negro Deluxe' gets a limited 3xLP press. An ultra cathartic, hard-hitting haze of hardcore punk, free jazz, and harsh noise-adjacent sound design with violent and corrupt cops firmly in its crosshairs, it emerged in 2020 a month prior to the murder of George Floyd. Originally titled ‘To Be Angry’, NEGRO draws influence from Afrocentric jazz, sci-fi literature and the music of Bad Brains, Death, the late Ras G, among others. One of the most arresting and immediate LPs hailing from the hip hop continuum of the last ten years, it's not to be missed!

Review: As you probably know, pop music in Korea is a multi million dollar business with several leading bands all boasting vast and undying fanbases willing to spend plenty of money on anything and everything relating to their favourite act. BTS is one of the biggest of the lot and South Korean singer Jimin is one of the members of the group who has done a solo album. Face is it and now it arrives on white vinyl after initial release back in 2022. It was all co-written by Jimin and was inspired by the emotional impact of the COVID-19 pandemic so addresses "themes of loneliness, wrestling with oneself, and finding freedom".

Review: As part of their latest full-discography reissue via UMR, The Who re-release their second full-length rock opera, Quadrophenia. Newly to 180-gram black vinyl, this mammoth project is an early rock concept album by the band, credited for the revival and cementing of the Mod subculture at large in the seventies. The album is set between London and Brighton in 1965, and follows a young mod named Jimmy and his many tight-blazered, Moped-bound travails and heartaches. Responsible for producing the Mod as a full-blown, marketable, subcultural identity, Quadrophenia was the blueprint for a youth aeon, and went on to inspire the teen drug-addled, alley-way action of the later film of the same name, directed by Franc Roddam.

Review: Over-Nite Sensation has been long-hailed as the gateway drug into Frank Zappa’s extensive musical universe, after which there really is no going back. Now reissued and expanded by the Zappa estate, the album returns to the foreground again, in several formats, including one CD with over 57 unreleased and rare studio and live tracks piled on top of the original seven magnum opi. This edition, however, is an audiophile standard 2xLP edition, just as Uncle Meat intended from the jump. From the opening princely funk of ‘Dirty Love’ to the midway scattings of ‘Dinah-Moe Humm’ and the closing yippee-ki-yays of ‘Montana’, this album should be best remembered not only as FZ's sexiest, but coincidingly as the one on which music’s most notorious Bonnie & Clyde, Ike and Tina Turner, were enlisted to aid Zappa for the closing track, but were ultimately not credited due to a poor performance, by Zappa’s assessment.

Review: The Wedding Present's Watusi, often overshadowed by its predecessors, emerges as a hidden gem in their discography. Initially released amidst the frenzy of their Hit Parade singles, it suffered from being ahead of its time"a blend of pop hooks and Seattle underground influences that defied easy categorisation". Yet, as fans who witnessed them revisiting it at their Brighton event recently will atest, 'Watusi' feels remarkably contemporary, its hypnotic melodies and nuanced instrumentation resonating with a neo-drone edge. While it may have been a hard sell in its era, the current lineup breathes new life into its subtle intelligence, unveiling its true brilliance. Overlooked but not forgotten, Watusi finally gets its due recognition as a key release from The Wedding Present, reaffirming its place in their storied career alongside Sea Monsters, George Best and the Hit Parade singles.

Review: The Cure's live album 'Paris' catches the band in the summer of 1992. This tour came after a siesmic shift in the previously fairly static line up of the goth pop icons, with original frontman Robert Smith and long serving bassist Simon Gallup joined by drummer Jason Cooper, keyboardist Roger O'Donnell and guitar player Perry Bamonte for the first time, all of whom remain part of their live ensemble 30 years later. The setlist starts with their evergreen opener 'Shake Dog Shake' but this selection double vinyl captures more deep cuts - 'The Figurehead', 'One Hundred Years' and 'Apart' as examples - than hits, although the dark pop of 'Close To Me' does make an appearance close to its end.

Review: Ansonia Records' new, comprehensive Salsa Con Estilo: Dance Floor Gems from the Vaults: 1950s-1980s is a vibrant compilation, tracing the musical journey of salsa through the iconic NYC-based Latin label Ansonia Records via its founder, Rafael "Ralph" Perez. Perez is said to have played a trailblazing role in the proliferation of Salsa music throughout the US from the 1950s to the 1970s, proving the fact that trends often don't just happen but are often rather likely to catch on due to the influence of notable individuals. These tracks boast danceable rhythms, vibrant brass, and the unmistakable influence of Afro-Cuban genres like son, guaguanco, and son montuno. The compilation carefully highlights key elements such as the coro, montuno, moNa, and cierre, providing a rich historical perspective on the roots of salsa.

Review: Even posthumously, Bill Withers is 'Still Bill'. Because he's still got it; Mobile Fidelity here reissue the album on its 50th Anniversary, doing thorough justice to the soul crooner's original album first released on the landmark Sussex Records in 1972. Following up the familial, sunned and simple subject matter of his debut 'Just As I Am', Still Bill opted more specifically for a sultrier and more romantic lyrical affair, and like its cover, saw Withers express his many-angled take on love.

Review: One of many names in the pantheons of Tokyo's electronic music triumphs, despite their acclaim, reverence among boffins, and the sprinkling of high profile UK remixers that helped spread their output further (copies of reworkings by The Black Dog, Autechre and Global Communication fetch a fair song on the resale market) most will never have heard about Nav Katze. Their loss, and one we'd like to put right if possible.

Formed in 1984 as a trio - Naoko Iimura (guitar), Miwako Yamaguchi (vocals and bass), and Shino Furutachi (drums) - the band would put out two well received record on SWITCH before migrating to the far more prominent label Victor Music Industries for 1991's Kanki, at which point three became two with Furutachi stepping down. This package showcases not only why their original material was so sought after, with trance notes, IDM and ambient and pop meeting in beautiful soundscapes - but also what can happen when new parties get involved, with remixes from Aphex Twin, Sun Electric and Disjecta included.

Review: Roy Budd's soundtrack for Get Carter is an iconic piece of British cinema history, and this expanded edition celebrates its 50th anniversary in style. Budd's jazzy and groovy score perfectly complements the gritty atmosphere of the film, showcasing his musical genius. The addition of a bonus disc featuring outtakes and dialogue adds depth and nostalgia for fans of the movie. The newly illustrated artwork by Tony Stella pays homage to the film's noir aesthetic, while Charlie Brigden's liner notes provide valuable insights into the creation of the soundtrack. Limited to just 2000 copies, this 180-gram 2LP edition is a must-have for collectors and enthusiasts alike, offering an exciting listening experience that engages you in the world of 'Get Carter with each needle drop.

Review: Continuing with LITA's extensive reissuing and repackaging of Haruomi Hosono's massive backlog of music, 'Hosono House' comes in all its glory to a new wax pressing. Released in 1973, it was one of Hosono's many brief forays into acoustic Americana, breaking from the loopy ambient classical music he'd made his name for. An ebber and flower, this one moves through psychic rock inspirations and sonic allusions to historic acts such as The Band and The United States Of America, albeit with an additional, moody ambient flair. We love oddities like this.

Review: Wilco's first studio album in three years, "Sky Blue Sky" has been perhaps the most ardently awaited release of 2007. Eager fans had taken to shouting out pleas for information to bandleader Jeff Tweedy during his recent solo acoustic tour, and the web chatter has been virtually deafening. On "Sky Blue Sky" Tweedy's lyrics deal forthrightly with romantic separation and reconciliation, their bittersweet quality giving way, as the album progresses, to a more uplifting, redemptive mood. Tweedy quite literally banishes the darkness on the penultimate track, the inspiring, gospel-tinged "What Light".

Review: An integral figure on the Motor City scene for the best part of two decades, Specter has always been a particularly prolific producer. Built To Last - appearing on Theo Parrish's significant Sound Signature label - is his first album-length excursion. It offers an expansive summary of his inspirations and influences - many will notice subtle nods towards local deep house, techno and electro heroes, as well as more experimental synthesizer music, off-kilter electronic jazz-funk, deep space dub and eyeliner-clad early '80s synth-wave - while also showcasing a trademark sound that's every bit as dusty, warm, loose and lo-fi as his lauded Detroit peers.

Review: Recorded on March 28, 1974, at Studio Palm, Paris, Khan Jamal's skilful improvisation and rhythmic exploration throughout his 1973 jazz masterpiece Give The Vibes Some very much showcases the artist's virtuosity on the vibraphone. It is a record that takes you deep into intricate rhythms and soulful melodies all of which make for immersive atmospheres that take you into all new realms. Each track is a testament to Jamal's musical prowess and his ability to push the boundaries of jazz which his what has made it such a timeless gem amongst jazz heads.

Review: The Mars Volta's debut album remains one of the band's creative high-points. After the post-hardcore rush of At The Drive-In burst into flames, few could have dreamed something as ambitious and progressive as De Loused In The Comatorium could have emerged. The clue's in the word progressive, as Cedric Bixler-Zavala, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Jeremy Ward pooled their resources (with some bass assistance from Flea) to create long, spiralling narratives around the concept of Cerpin Taxt, the comatose hero of this nebulous story. Still sounding visionary 20 years later, it was the start of an exciting new chapter for a band truly unlike any other.

Review: The fourth album from Colombian-Spanish singer Kali Uchis translates as Without Fear (of Love and Other Demons)). It is her first record sung primarily in Spanish which does nothing at all to detract from the beauty of her delivery. Guests such as PartyNextDoor, Nasty and Cortez add their own flavours but the overriding vibe of this one is bright, melodic bedroom pop, r&b and reggaeton with funky breaks and trippy jazz stylings. Love is often in the air throughout the record which often soars to blue skies and brings the rays direct to your face.

Review: The Smashing Pumpkins' transformation from melodic alt-rock deities to synth-driven electronic boppers is complete. Well, almost. The titular single certainly fits that easy narrative, laser beam chords and string refrains bursting from behind a track that bounces with a light disco punk energy. In truth, of course, there has always been far more to Bill Corgan et al than the alternative rock tag often implies, and even right back to their formative years the crew were toying with expectations.

2018's Rick Rubin-produced Shine And Oh So Bright... album may have emphasised their rock roots, but now we're given their creative juices in full flow on their poppiest outing yet, partly inspired by the roster of seminal Chicago label Wax Trax!, the US home to Underworld and The KLF among others. Needless to say, though, the Pumpkins make it sound like they've lived here all along; testament to their unwavering dedication to trying new ideas and knack at pulling them off.

Review: Some 14 years in the making, Les Jardins Mystiques Vol.1 comprises 52 tracks of music composed, arranged and produced by Miguel Atwood-Ferguson; with contributions from 50+ friends including Kamasi Washington, Thundercat, Carlos NiNo, Austin Peralta, Bennie Maupin, Gabe Noel, Jamael Dean, and more. If that wasn't monumental enough, just know that this lengthy classical-experimental-jazz album is certainly Miguel's intended magnum opus, having been written and recorded entirely as a result of his own uncompromised, self-funded efforts. Such an extensive time period reflects an album of longstanding personal growth for the artist; an attitude of continual evolution and innocence, of constantly coming of age and reinventing oneself.

Review: The Rolling Stones are arguably one not only the most iconic rock bands of all time but also considered legendary performers as well. One of their most well-recorded performances (as noted by fans often) is their 2002 performance at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles, with a track listing full of 70s classics and spread over three albums to get the best possible fidelity from the medium.

Review: Cast your mind back to 2011 if you can, when Canadian legend The Weeknd was just making his debut appearance with the House Of Balloons mixtape. He set out his stall quickly as a vital new voice in the field of RnB, producing everything alongside Illangelo, Cirkut and Doc McKinney and laying his life down in the most ear-snagging bars. There are some audacious samples which have only been cleared since his star rose and he had the clout to make it happen, and so now this highly-anticipated 10th Anniversary Edition lands and you can hear The Weeknd's opening salvo how it should be heard.

Review: Armin van Buuren's A State Of Trance Year Mix 2023 is yet another meticulously crafted journey through the best trance music of the year from the Dutch genre king. Spanning over two hours, this mix showcases the genre's continued diversity and evolution and features tracks from both established artists and rising talents. With seamless transitions and expertly curated selections, van Buuren captures the essence of the trance scene in 2023 with all the usual hallmarks - from uplifting melodies to driving beats, euphoric atmospheres to epic synth lines. As such this it a must-listen and more proof no one quite knows the genre like Armin.

Review: Juan Mendez took his Silent Servant project to another level when he released Negative Fascination on Hospital Productions in 2012. His EBM-informed, brooding slant on techno had already made its mark on Sandwell District and other such influential labels, but his debut album afforded the space to really shape out his seductive sonic dystopia. More than ten years on, it stands tall as a masterpiece in the space it occupies, seething with hard-boiled urban malaise but equally adept at using subtlety alongside intensity. This expanded edition incorporates the Extended Mixes 12" as well as additional demo versions for those who like the tracks a little rawer.

Review: Iam8bit do vital work in releasing the soundtracks of contemporary video games, many of which may have otherwise never heard any semblance of independent appreciation. This record is the soundtrack for the game Eastward, an adventure RPG game developed by Pixpil and published by Chucklefish, released in 2021. A whopping 73 tracks appear, all composed by one Joel Corelitz, who gradates a diverse range of paints on an emotional rollercoaster of a sonic palette, reflecting the game's story of a miner and a mysterious girl who embark on a journey across a post-apocalyptic, effective open world.

Review: Donald Byrd was joined by tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley, alto sax wizard Jackie McLean, Duke Pearson on piano, bassists Doug Watkins and Reggie Workman and drummer Lex Humphries on this stunning session from 1960. It's a record packed with highlights, not least a powerful ballad on 'Little Girl Blue', or the hard bop swing of 'My Girl Shirl' and 'Lex', the last of those two in particular features a soulful solo from Mobley that really stays with you. This is part fo the Tone Poet series which places particular focusses on exceptional audiophile Blue Note LP reissues presented by Music Matters.

Review: Maynard James Keenan's Puscifer project has been giving the fans the good stuff since those heady days of lockdown by upping the ante on live stream performance. Even now they're back to real-world touring, they're continuing to explore the medium of reaching millions of fans globally by revisiting specific eras of the band's history. Parole Violator is the soundtrack to their filmed performance from the Wiltern Theatre in LA, and it finds them revisiting tracks from 2011's Conditions Of My Parole and giving them a fresh perspective. From acoustic renditions to heavenly new arrangements, there's a lot to savour for the devoted fans of Puscifer.

Review: Oraculo Records once again calls upon the services of its long-time partner Carlos Grabstein, who heads up the Berlin label MISERIA Records, to curate a superb selection of his best releases to date in vinyl format. This is the first time this has ever been done and comes in a double gatefold sleeve, is limited to just 300 copies and comes lacquered and pressed on 180-gram wax with all tracks specially mastered for the job. The MISERIA label started only in 2021 as a DIY cassette and digital outlet but is now well known for its ultra-rare synth-based darkwave compilations.

Review: There are so many pivotal albums in The Cure's imperious back catalogue, but Wish will always remain one which heralded the band's progression from indie heroes to universally adored treasures of British pop music. The gothic tendencies are absolutely still there in the moonlit charm of 'Open' et al, but the sound is direct and expansive, with plenty of space for monster hits like 'Friday I'm In Love'. The ability to let the light in ensured Robert Smith and co. could be popular as well as profound, and they've never looked back.

Review: "NINE INCH NAILS' GROUNDBREAKING DEBUT ALBUM
REMASTERED AND RE-RELEASED

Fans can now revisit the conception of Nine Inch Nails. Trent Reznor's Null Corporation has teamed with UMe/The Bicycle Music Company to release Pretty Hate Machine: 2010 Remaster on November 22, 2010. After completing the score for David Fincher's The Social Network, Reznor oversaw the digital remastering of Pretty Hate Machine from the newly unearthed original tapes with engineer Tom Baker (whose NIN credits include The Downward Spiral, Broken, The Fragile, With Teeth and Ghosts). This remastered version includes an eleventh track, a cover of Queen's ''Get Down Make Love,'' originally the B-side to the ''Sin'' single and produced by Al Jourgensen. Rob Sheridan, NIN's longtime art director, has also re-imagined the packaging of Pretty Hate Machine under Reznor's supervision.

As a young musician in Cleveland, Ohio, Reznor took a job at a local recording studio and employed unused studio time to develop his own material. The nascent album was later recorded with his favorite producers including Flood/Mark Ellis (U2, Depeche Mode, PJ Harvey), John Fryer (Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil), Adrian Sherwood (Ministry, Cabaret Voltaire) and Keith LeBlanc (Tackhead). The result was the first Nine Inch Nails album, 1989's Pretty Hate Machine. All songs were written, arranged, programmed and performed by Reznor. The album featured the breakthrough singles ''Sin,'' ''Down In It'' and ''Head Like A Hole,'' and ultimately sold over 3 million copies, reaching Triple Platinum sales status. In the wake of the album's initial underground success, NIN soon developed a reputation as one of the best live acts in rock and joined the inaugural Lollapalooza tour in 1991. NIN have since sold more than 18 million albums, collected Grammy® Awards and headlined arenas, amphitheaters and festivals worldwide.

The Bicycle Music Company acquired the rights to Pretty Hate Machine from a division of Prudential Securities in the spring of 2010. It was Bicycle's intention from the onset to enable Reznor to regain some control of this lost piece of NIN's legacy, resulting in this artist approved 2010 reissue of one of music's most groundbreaking and influential albums.

Reznor is currently working on new music as a member of the group How To Destroy Angels, continuing his Nine Inch Nails efforts and composing for future film score projects.

Review: Mark Knopfler's One Deep River album from 2023 immerses listeners in a reflective journey through Americana's heartland. It is a typically poignant album from the rock icon that showcases his mastery of storytelling as it weaves together tales of life's trials and triumphs. With his distinctive guitar work and soulful vocals front and centre, Knopfler paints vivid landscapes of dusty highways and riverbanks at dusk on each track, from the introspective 'Beneath a Prairie Moon' to the bluesy swagger of 'Ride On Across.' With its timeless allure, One Deep River speaks of Knopfler's enduring legacy as a guitar troubadour of the modern age.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***


Summer 2023 will always be remembered for the cinematic battle that was Barbie vs Oppenheimer, two polar opposite Hollywood smashes that spawned a wave of memes. Both managed to break records but one stands out when it comes to the soundtrack - and that is Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, the three-hour epic about the genesis of the atomic bomb. Written by Ludwig Goransson it now arrives in full, on nice opaque orange vinyl, via Mondo. The music matches the deep trip into the psyche of a singular American mind J. Robert Oppenheimer with plenty of drama and immersive, emotional moments.

Review: Ambient and neo-classical pioneer Nils Frahm's Music For Animals is, amazingly for someone as prolific as he, his first fresh studio material since 2018's All Melody and 2019's associated All Encores. It is also his first work on the new label he has co-founded with his manager and it plays out over three immersive hours that are quite different to his previous work. It doesn't make use of his famous piano skills but is a mediative and spacious record that allows room to think. Despite the length of it, this is a record worth giving your full attention.

Review: Pioneering and mercurial DJ Erol Alkan and former Grid man Richard Norris have been spinning discs together for well over a decade, and remixing other outfits for almost as long, after bonding on a love of '60s psychedelia and classic acid house - yet this marks their bona fide debut as recording artists, and it's a glorious collision of both these passions - fuelled by crate-digging acumen and exemplary taste, and reflective of a magpie spirit that renders these third-eye-massaging gems more than mere psychedelic pastiche, rather a bold and joyful reinvention of lysergic glories of yore for a new aeon.

Review: The Verve label is pressing up records according to popular demand at the moment and next up is a Wayne Shorter gem. The American great's Footprints Live! is a mix of sounds from three of his European dates back in 2001, a series of shows that also served as an introduction to his 'Footprint Quartet' featuring pianist Danilo Perez, bassist John Patitucci and drummer Brian Blade. Each of the talents shines through here with a particularly challenging re-imagination of the title track, as well as 'Masquelero', which are both originally from when Shorter was a part of the seminal Miles Davis Quintet back in the 1960s.

Review: Madrugada's The Industrial Silence Tour in 2019 took them to play Live At Rockpalast and the show was captured for this limited edition and one-off album. It comes on turquoise coloured vinyl, housed in a sturdy sleeve with three printed innersleeves. The magical live recording came as the band regrouped to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their much loved and vital debut album Industrial Silence. The show in Germany found them at their very best, fully energy and engaged with the crowd not just musically but emotionally. This release has been put together in collaboration with and supervised by the band themselves.

Review: Despite his considerable contributions to drum & bass over many decades as a DJ, producer and promoter Grooverider has released only one solo artist album and that is 1998's Mysteries Of Funk which now turns 25 years old. Produced in conjunction with Optical, it gets a special, limited edition anniversary reissue across six sides of vinyl including standout singles 'Rainbows of Colour' and 'Where's Jack The Ripper.' It came a decade or so after Grooverider established himself alongside long time partner Fabio with sets at the UK's best illegal raves before then starting their own seminal Rage night at Heaven.

Review: By 1997 Photek had already marked himself out as a wild card in the rapidly evolving d&b scene. He'd had three years to carve out some frankly dizzying displays of break editing wizardry and such was the innovation on display there just had to be an album coming. Modus Operandi smartly stepped to one side of the dancefloor, offering a smoky reflection on where jungle and d&b had got to, highlighting the compatibility between half-speed downtempo and breakneck drums and bringing inherent jazziness to the forefront of the beats, which avoided all the usual cliches. It's a masterpiece which hasn't dulled with time and here it's getting a heavyweight reissue across three slabs to ensure the loudest cut. All the better to blow your mind with, all over again.

Review: If you don't know Acid Mothers Temple, get to know. This terrific psychedelic rock band is part of the quintessence of Eastern counterculture, self-defined as a "freak-out group for the 21st Century", led by Kawabata Makoto. With most of their albums centring on a ten minute long prog-haze freakouts, Paralyzed Brain here is no exception, with its three star pieces - 'Cemetery Orbital Drive 0011', 'Paralyzed Brain' and 'Magic Bohemian Has Gone' - adding up to a whopping deluge of consciousness-expanding rock. Now reissued on LP after its first, limited edition CD-only version as part of 'The Electric Dream Ecstasy Tour' in 2018.

Review: Claudio Abbado and the Vienna Philharmonic's inaugural joint recording of Brahms's Symphony No. 1 in 1972 holds a significant place in both their discographies for its exceptional interpretation and sound quality. To commemorate Deutsche Grammophon's 125th anniversary, they launched The Original Source vinyl series, presenting legendary 1970s recordings in unprecedented sonic clarity. Remastered at the renowned Emil Berliner Studios from original four-track tapes using cutting-edge analogue technologies, these limited and numbered 180g vinyl editions boast enhanced clarity, subtleties, and frequency response. Each deluxe gatefold edition includes original covers, lyrics, additional photos, recording logs and technical insights.

Review: Sub Focus has as far back as we can remember always been a 'big name' in drum & bass, but it's only now that the London-based music producer cements it as such with a slice of contextualising nostalgia. Evolve is his new LP, charting a new feel for 1990s influences and various musical homages to the acts and songs that contributed to his sense of musical evolution and maturity as a musician. Nods to the Chemical Brothers and early jungle and hardcore are conveyed through contemporary collabs with the likes of CamelPhat, Gene Farris and LOWES.
