Happy (album version)
Happy (instrumental)
Review: "Happy" has enjoyed matchless success, having hit the top spot no less than three times... And selling over a million copies in the process. Here Sony BMG unleash a 12" edition featuring the instrumental on the flip , adding a whole new lease of life to one of the most positive pop songs written in recent times. Breaking down into a really cool human rhythm, even without Pharrell's vocals this excels in every possible funky way.

Review: RECOMMENDED
It almost (almost) pains us to recommend this one - The White Stripes aren't really a band that should be releasing Greatest Hits albums. We'd much rather them give us a surprise record of typically groundbreaking, brand new theatric and infectious blues-tinged rock 'n' roll. But we are where we are, and after more than a decade without much activity from the siblings beggars can't be choosers.

One of our objections is exactly how you choose what to include on an LP like this. What defines a 'hit' from an outfit that are renowned for packing albums with nothing but stone cold gems, even if they failed to make it onto radio playlists or single format. In this case, though, the challenge has been met - with chart topping fare like Seven Nation Army notably absent, while more wildcard tracks such as 'I Think I Smell A Rat' and 'Dead Leaves On the Dirty Ground' given their deserving dues.

Review: RECOMMENDED
Let's face it, White Blood Cells is the moment when The White Stripes really broke the mould. It's a continuation of Jack and Meg's garage rock aesthetic as fine-tuned over two previous albums, and wholeheartedly a straight up rock 'n' roll album. But the elements are so perfectly primed it's impossible not to rank this as one of the greatest long form outings of this century, so far. And we're not alone - Rolling Stone even reckons it's among the best LPs of all time. Pity the fool who disagrees.

From the racing 'Fell in Love With A Girl', to the beguiling mystery of 'The Union Forever', 'I Think I Smell A Rat''s meld of mariachi riffs and mosh stomp and the emotional piano closer 'This Protector', to the innocent acoustic joy of 'We're Going To Be Friends', this is a masterclass of songwriting and arrangement, tracks that evolve, perplex, surprise, and - most importantly - entertain.

Review: It's been twenty five years since the last Roger Waters solo album, and given the fractious nature of global affairs of late, it's hardly surprising that the lugubrious 74-year-old rock colossus has had no trouble finding things to get angry about of late. Dishing out songs on drone warfare, terrorism and American nationalism, 'Is This The Life We Really Want?' - which is stylistically very much in the mould of his post-'Dark Side' oeuvre - may be no barrel of laughs, but it's oddly reassuring that his righteous rage remains undiminished, not to mention aided and abetted by the skills of Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich in its intensity and relit ire.

Review: There can be few nostalgia trips as potent as that of Stranger Things. The hit Netflix series knows exactly what buttons to press for kids of the 80s to get all misty-eyed, and their music curation is a big part of that process. With no expense spared on the licensing front, this collection draws for a dizzying array of big hitters, including firm classics from KISS, Talking Heads, Kate Bush, The Cramps, Musical Youth and so very many more. If you love the show, or if you simply love great music from the 80s, there's a lot for you to savour on this soundtrack for the fourth season of the show.

Review: It's a film etched on the memory of every child of the 80s, and a huge part of that is the music involved. Dirty Dancing has plenty of iconic moments, but none as iconic as 'that' scene set to Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes' '(I've Had) The Time Of My Life'. As such, it makes sense to open the soundtrack to the romantic classic with that song, setting the nostalgia off from the get-go and taking you back through every swooning moment between Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey. This special 35th anniversary edition of the soundtrack comes on a special custom-shaped picture disc - a true collector's edition.

Review: Alabaman soul six-piece St Paul & The Broken Bones follow up 2014's LP debut Half The City with a lavishly produced lesson in levelling up. Broader in sound, style and confidence, the range on Sea Of Noise hits hard from the off; the Lee Fields-level of emotional cries on "Sanctify", the bluesy rock twangs and gospel chorus of "Waves", the lean arrangement and full-spotlight Charles Bradley vocals of "I'll Be Your Woman", the poppy stomp and sing-along-ability of "Brain Matter", the gutsy belts and Stax horns of "Burning Rome"... All brought together with consistency and character, albums like these never stop offering something new on every single listen.

Review: The Boss wouldn't know how to quit even if he fancied trying - maybe it's the leftover work ethic of the humble upbringing that has been a consistent theme throughout his work since we first heard Greetings From Wild Asbury Park, N.J.. 20 studio albums or so later, and we have a fittingly titled new addition to the LP discography, Only the Strong Survive, a rare example of Bruce Springsteen performing and recording work by other artists.

Apparently spurred on in part by memories of his experience working on We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions, his 2006 ode to Pete Seeger, and the mixed bag of largely negative and unnerving emotions we all went through in lockdown, the Great American songwriter set about not writing but singing and playing a load of covers in a series of studio takes. The result is a gem - tracks by Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson, Diana Ross and The Supremes, Frankie Valli, The Commodores, Four Tops and Ben E. King prove, if there was ever any doubt, that Springsteen can turn to anything and make it his own.

Review: We're not sure if these reissues of all of Britney Spear's albums are coming because she is now freed from her draconian conservatorship but we're glad they are. That sad episode very much put the former queen of teen pop back in the headlines and reminded us how much we loved her innocent and catchy tunes. 'Baby One More Time' is certainly one of her most iconic smash hit singles and the album of the same name is packed with plenty more that will take you back to the first time you heard them in a flash.

Review: Now that she is free from the tyranny of her conservatorship, Britney Spears is doing what she wants again. Part of that is reissuing nine albums from her back catalogue, all on nice coloured vinyl this Spring. Britney was her third studio long-player originally recorded and released in 2001. It marked a slight transition away from her teen pop style with a more mature musical outlook. Pop, r&b, EDM and even disco and hip hop start to creep into the rhythms and Spears herself co-wrote six of the tunes. It was another global commercial success for Spears.

Review: Britney Spears's ninth studio album in 2016 is said to be one of the artist's personal favourites. It was a long time in the making, with no deadline for the label, and though couched in pop also takes in elements of R&B, EDM, and hip-hop music. Her own vocals are engaging and involved throughout and find her often taking left turns into more urban sounds that ever before. She places those vocals front and centre on many tracks and plays around with timbre, style and scale throughout. The maximal production comes with boundless energy and help make this one of Spears's most innovative works.

Review: Sparks have always been a hugely theatrical and decidedly camp experience, so it wasn't really a surprise to learn the brothers Russell and Ron Mael were working on a musical extravaganza with Leos Carax, the French movie director who shot to fame in the mid-1980s with Boy Meets Girl. Telling the story of a provocative stand up comedian and his wife, based on this score it's certainly going to wear its heart on the sleeve. But then again, this is musical theatre.

As for the soundtrack itself, you're pulled into the narrative before you even realise it thanks to the prescriptive lyrics that literally say what's happening on screen for much of the time. It's operatic, grandiose, and incredibly dramatic, spanning classic balladry and more contemporary electronically-informed takes on the musical tune blueprint. Weird, but hugely entertaining.

Review: Fans reckon this is one of the greatest ever soundtracks, and it's hard to disagree no matter your musical persuasion even in face of a huge catalogue of Japanese classics on a similar tip. Though not revelatory in terms of style, the bebop execution is beautiful and the mastering at the famous Van Gelder studio is tip top. The tracks range from high intensity, stab fuelled dance tracks to country tinged interludes via sombre trumpet solos that will make your heart bleed. It's cinematic, widescreen and filled with emotion.

Review: The Cowboy Bebop was an anime series that was much loved for its soundtrack albums by Japanese composer and instrumentalist Yoko Kanno and his band the Seatbelts. The sounds were weird and wonderful affairs that made odd connections between seemingly disparate worlds - jazz, rock, J-pop and electronic, often with a curious aesthetic. Just this year, Kanno has returned to soundtracking the series on Netflix so this reissue is sure to connect with fans old and new. It is largely instrumental, with big band pieces next to more ambient passages and extensive alto sax deployment. As far as cult records go, this one is right up there.

'Another Chance' is one of the biggest and harks back to the years when he was as well known for his tightly trimmed facial hair and Kangol hat as anything else. It is now 20 years old and so gets an anniversary release on a special limited edition 7" picture disc. The track is a fulsome house affair with big drums and that catchy vocal hook and is sure to still unite plenty of floors all over the world all these years later.

Review: Since releasing his last solo album in 2011, Raphael Saadiq has spent rather a lot of time steering the career of American soul singer and rapper Adrian Marcel. Thankfully Saadiq has finally found time to get back in the studio himself, with "Jimmy Lee" the result of those sessions. Saadiq is in impeccable vocal form throughout an album that's far more musically eclectic than you'd perhaps expect. While naturally rooted in hip-hop and R&B, you'll also find cuts that feature fuzzy, razor-sharp guitar licks, doff a cap to doo-wop and gospel soul, breathe new life into '80s electrofunk and channel the spirit of vintage 1970s soul.

Review: Spanish singer-songwriter Rosalia is back with her third studio album and one that is a hugely conceptual and experimental affair. She herself describes it as "her most personal and confessional album" and that is embodied by the lead single, 'Saoko', which celebrates transformation and change. It is an album of pop leaning, reggeaton inspired sounds and plenty of nods to dembow, champeta, flamenco, bachata, hip-hop and piano melodies. The artist's own fierceness and unapologetically brave attitude helps make this the force that it is.

Review: Welcome 2 America, the first posthumous album release of previously unheard music from Prince's bulging archives, may not be up to the dizzyingly high standards he set himself, but it's still a hugely enjoyable collection of cuts. Prince recorded it with his New Power Generation band in 2010 ahead of a world tour, but eventually decided against releasing it. Musically, it's typical of the great man - think looser than normal shuffling, musically layered purple soul and funk in his inimitable style- and it does genuinely contain some gems. These include 'Born 2 Die', which reminded us of the conscious soul of Curtis Mayfield; 'Welcome 2 America', where Prince's spoken word vocals take aim at the USA during the Obama era, and the guitar-laden Purple Rain-era throwback 'Hot Summer'.

Review: Welcome 2 America is the first posthumous album from Prince that is made up entirely of never-before-released material. It follows a state-of-the-union-concept and fide the Purple One espousing blunt views on everything from drugs to religion, the music industry to taxes and technology. The music was discovered by Prince's archivist Michael Howe on a load of CD-Rs and is backed by bassist Tal Wilkenfeld and drummer Chris Coleman. It was recorded in 2010 and had a tour named after it but the album was shelved before we got to hear it. While not all gold, there is plenty here for fans old and new to get excited by.

Review: In 1991 the UK is in a very different place to the one it occupies today. One thing that hasn't changed in the 30 years between then and now, though, is how incredibly, unbelievably good Primal Scream's Screamadelica was. And still is.

It might have been the studio mastery brought to the mix by the late, great Andrew Weatherall. Perhaps it hit the nail on the head of a year when the country's rock and dance scenes finally met somewhere on the outskirts of Blackburn, or along the M25. Maybe, just maybe, it's because the tracks themselves are just great. Whatever your personal take, this album should be on everyone's shelves. From the hedonism of 'Loaded' to the pseudo-rave euphoria of 'Come Together', and the self love of 'Movin' On Up' always inspires, the record is of its time but resonates through the ages.

Review: By now, there can be few people who don't own a copy of Primal Scream's iconic 1991 album Screamadelica, quite possibly the most loved-up indie-dance album of all time. Few though will have heard the various early recordings, demos and work-in-progress takes showcased on Demodelica, the final part of the band's celebration of Screamadelica's 30th birthday. It's a genuinely revealing affair, with many of the versions of familiar favourites such as 'Come Together', 'Higher Than The Sun' and 'Shine Like Stars' sounding vastly different to the now familiar finished versions. Even more excitingly, the inclusion of multiple mixes means that we can now hear how these much-loved songs evolved over the course of the recording process. In other words, it's a must for Primal Scream fans.

Review: This cutely entitled Demodelica double album brings together a load of different versions of classic cuts from Primal Schemas Screamadelica album, which itself has been the subject of a big anniversary reissue this year. All of the 16 tracks here are previously unreleased demo versions that offer a real insight into how the final album came together. The works in progress versions are just as interesting and the whole thing comes with some new notes from Jon Savage. Whether it's the rawness of 'I'm Comin' Down' (Isle Of Dogs Home Studio) or the intensity of 'Movin' On Up' (Hackney Studio demo), fans will be keen to hear this one.

Review: RECOMMENDED
You can almost feel Ozzy Osbourne's determination to prove critics wrong on his solo work from this era. Diary of a Madman was released in 1981, just three years after the Prince of Darkness was thrown out of Black Sabbath due to the extent of his drink and drug problems. It should go without saying you have to take things pretty far to wind up an evictee from one of heavy metal's most full-throttle outfits. Nevertheless, it happened, so by the time this record arrived there was a clear desire to show people that was a temporary setback.

At the same time, there's also an element of sending himself - and that reputation - up here, preempting the comic book caricature of Evil Ozzy we would come to recognise, and love, in later years. Musically, it's as it should be - atmospheric, eerie, and packed with the classical-leaning guitar work of the late, great Randy Rhoads. 3million copies sold and counting, say no more.

Review: Say what you will about Black Sabbath founding father turned solo metal don Ozzy Osbourne, he has never come remotely close to giving up. Even as ill-health resulting from decades of living the ultimate rock 'n' roll lifestyle - alcohol, drugs, eating bats - has crept up on him. As this sentence is written, reports are hitting the entertainment press that he was spotted leaving a recording studio in Los Angeles with wife Sharon, the 73-year-old hell raiser looking frail but still clearly up to something.

Whether the results will be the follow up to Black Rain is another question, of course. Released in 2007, it's currently the most recent album from the Prince of Darkness. Amazingly, it remains his most successful record in terms of opening week sales, too, shifting 152,000 copies in the first seven days, which in the era of hard drives clogged with Limewire-sourced illegal downloads is saying something.

Review: Since their early heyday of mammoth pop hits, electronic-indie duo MGMT seemed to sound gradually more and more conflicted, unsure whether to continue producing stadium-scale hooks or follow their eccentricities. It seems, with their fourth full-length 'Little Dark Age', that they've opted for the latter - sounding all the more confident and cohesive for it. 'Little Dark Age' sees the pair channeling their synthetic poppy psychedelia into their darkest, most serious and interesting songwriting yet. Anybody who panned 2013's self-titled album or 2010's 'Congratulations' should be pleasantly surprised by this return to form and new-found resolve. 'Little Dark Age' is a far cry from MGMT's definitive debut, but it's to the band's credit that exploring the more weird and wonderful corners of their pop-sensibilities has worked so well.

Review: "I'm somewhere between a pop artist and a jam band-maybe closer to pop artist," John Mayer recently told Kerwin Frost in a YouTube interview. Given the fact he makes a sideline as the touring guitarist for the Grateful Dead - a band vying for position as most ironically named given the length of their live history - and his latest record sounds like Sob Rock, in both title and sonics, it's not hard to see why he's come up with that kind of career summation.

It is, of course, purposefully reductive and awkwardly self-deprecating, in a self-conscious kind of way. And that attitude certainly rings true on this record, which despite being pretty grand in terms of scope, scarcely a 'small' track on here, always feels slightly withdrawn. Nevertheless, from the stadium balladry of 'All I Want Is To Be With You', through to the Clapton-esque blues of 'I Guess I Just Feel Like', it's Mayer on real form.

Review: An intense exercise in duality, 'Know Your Enemy' was actually born as a mission by Manic Street Preachers to record two albums in quick succession. 'Solidarity' and 'Door To The River' were simultaneous early-noughties left and right brains, channelling completely different ideas in some ways, and the same ideas in others. Now, the compiled album gets a full restoration, and includes two previously unreleased tracks 'Rosebud' and 'Studies In Paralysis'.

Review: Manic Street Preachers don't necessarily get the respect they should in 2021. Catapulted to 1990s super-indie-stardom by the albums Everything Must Go and This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours, guaranteeing a spot on every self-respecting (or sales-hungry?) compilation of the day, that commercial apex often blinds passersby from what happened before. The staunchly leftist political messaging of 'Suicide Alley', Generation Terrorists, and Against the Soul.

The Ultra Vivid Lament is the 14th album from the Welsh rock titans, who have arguably delivered their finest since those formative years. Playing out like a huge symphony, operatic levels of crescendo par for the course, it's definitive stuff. From soaring choruses to the glam pop keys, it's a fine example of their deft ability to juxtapose troubled images of broken Britain with chart friendly tunes.
