Review: Originally recorded in 1962 and released in 1963, Duke Ellington and Coleman Hawkins' collaborative masterpiece remains one of the greats of all time. As well as Ellington on piano and Hawkins on saxophone, you get the sheer joy of Ray Nance on violin, Aaron Bell on bass and Sam Woodyard on drums. That's not the whole line-up either, but fundamentally this is about Ellington's compositions, which get played out with a silken touch. Pieces like 'The Ricitic' feel as light as a feather, proving how subtlety and delicacy are just as much a testament to skill as any performance fireworks.

SIT, short for Sideways Invisibility Theory, is the collaborative project of Vlad Caia and Cristi Cons. As two scene leaders of the Romanian minimal phenomenon, both artists have proven over many years to have a unique vision for creativity and fresh approaches in what can be a homogenised scene. Of their many achievements, on their Amphia label as much as elsewhere, this album on Sushitech stands as one of their finest moments. As with all the best Romanian minimal, it's also still hotly in demand, making it a welcome addition to Sushitech's 15th anniversary pressing marathon. From dub tech laced rollers to gossamer-light trippers, this is the classiest end of the minimal tech house game from two artists with the vision to push things a little bit further.

Review: Ever consistent Canadian hardcore punk crew, Cancer Bats, are seemingly set to return with their follow up to 2018's 'The Spark That Moves', which marks their first offering following the departure of founding guitarist Scott Middleton.

With the frenetic thrashings of latest single, 'Lonely Bong', the group haven't sounded this vitriolic or pissed off in the better part of a decade.

From the thunderous title-track alone, it's evident 'Psychic Jailbreak' marks a smouldering return to form with low end grooves and Southern snarl imbued within its hardcore bindings. Cancer Bats have always sounded their best when resembling Every Time I Die getting into a beer-soaked bar brawl with Down, and this could be the fight that leads to a hospital visit.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged, but otherwise in excellent condition***

Scott Hallam has been an acid devotee since the early days, and he's largely put out his music on his own Axia label. While most of that is digital-only, now Cartulis have picked up on the considerable talents of this hardware lifer and presented five of his finest works on wax. The vibe veers tremendously, touching on dark and sinewy dungeon acid, boxy electro workouts, strangely psychedelic hardcore and plenty more besides. Hallam's style feels betrothed to the outboard approach - it's all synths and drum machines to these ears, and its immediacy is a big part of the charm. That, and the playful personality he works into those wigged out acid lines and pinging FX.

Open Spaces - "The Far Side Of The Mood" (5:46)
Review: Rebirth's fresh new 12" is a various artists affair that looks back while striding forwards. It is full of the sort of bliss out, dreamy, soft-edge deep house that is perfect for the warmer months and outdoor dances. Paolino & Gianni Bini lead the way with the effortlessly hazy and lush feeling 'Love' (Classic mix) while Sasha's 'Key To Heaven' is a perfect prog house tune that harks back to the heyday of Renaissance. Paramour & Adrian Morrison then link for the more dark and driving 'Transmutation' which has train track drums and suspensory chords always building but never bubbling over. Open Spaces run out with the widescreen and chunky dub house of 'The Far Side Of The Mood.'

Review: Erevan DJ's modern electronic label Bamboo Shows is responsible for some of the most boundary-pushing new underground electronic music. So, what better way to celebrate is there, than to give the style a name, 'Vapordub', and compile its choicest cuts into one 17-tracker? Inspired by the textures and aesthetics of vaporwave, 'vapordub' explores the genre's unconscious hive mind, inviting both known and unknown artists (and obscurant aliases) to contribute mournfully cutting-edge ambient bits to the fold. Sublime.

Review: Back in 2000, Jack White was right at the height of his popularity - not that it has waned much since, to be honest. De Stijl is the second album from his band The White Stripes and while it didn't placed that impressively in charts at the time, it has since become a cult classic amongst late coming fans who have gone back and worked their way through the band's discography. Fact fans will be interested to know that 'Why Can't You Be Nicer to Me?' was used in an episode of The Simpsons and 'Apple Blossom' was used in Quentin Tarantino's film The Hateful Eight.

Review: Mple Soul's Fat Jon is back on top form with this new slice of blissed out hip hop. It comes in 7" form on Ample Soul and opens up with the a-side roller 'Your Purpose' which was originally featured on the Samurai Champloo series. It has dreamy chords and gently tumbling drums that are imbued with an enchanting melody line. Flip it over and you will find 'Why We Dream,' a cut with noodling bass and airy broken beats and that is no particular hurry to go anywhere specific. Add in the cute vocal stabs and there is enough soul to keep you warm for weeks.

Review:  Morris Mobley is an alter-ego who makes music that is designed to chill you to the bone while also blowing your mind. Words like suave, cosmopolitan, lustrous and precise all come to mind when listening to the two tracks that make up this tidy 7", the second on the US label CQQL. Opener 'What's On Your Mind' is a low slung, bumping groove with lo-fi production and an aching vocal and on the flip it gets stripped right back and made into a warm, romantic late night dub.

Review: Edgar Winter is the brother of blues guitarist Johnny Winter, and he's organised this tribute album with a heavyweight cast whipping up a good old fashioned rock n' roll storm. Lead single 'Mean Town Blues' is a slide guitar workout and a half, featuring Joe Bonamassa on the licks, Sean Hurley on bass and Gregg Bissonette on the drums. The album is crafted to reflect the evolution of Johnny Winter's playing style over the course of his life, and the list of guests paying tribute is impressive, with huge names like Ringo Starr, Joe Walsh and Taylor Hawkins in amongst the list of rock heroes doffing their cap to one of their own.

While seemingly operating as common form of band - the industrial electropunk duo - they've always managed to upend the trope. 'The Heart Is Strange' is their latest cold factoryscape, scoring just 8 tracks of proto-transhuman gush. Clock choice cuts 'Beauty Is The Truth' and 'No Ordinary Girl' on this sprawling cyborg of an LP.

Now, less than a year removed from the life affirming scrappy anthems of 'The Mutt's Nuts', the gang (no pun intended) return with a literal 'Labour Of Love.' The single features three new cuts, all love songs, delivered with the manic, crusty, anthemic beauty one could ever desire from new school hardcore-by-way-of-Oi! punk revivalists.

Her third album is all about "overcoming being overcome with emotion and anxiety" and the 10 tracks were produced by Cameron Hale and mixed by Miro Mackie. Stylistically it take sin plenty such as indie rock, pop punk jams, and some cool balladry. In it, the singer confronts all manner of issues from pandemic isolation and depression to breakups and veganism, as well as some personal relationship issues.

The Chengdu-based arranger, mixer, mastering engineer and Eurorack modular designer presents eight original tracks on his debut vinyl album, with an extensive selection of remixes by some of the scene's biggest names such as the aforementioned Armani, Samuel L. Session and Waffensupermarkt. Style wise, TPMP goes for that greyscale dub techno sound, counting the likes of Basic Channel and Echospace as influences. Whether it's the locomotive minimalism of 'White Point', the cavernous and glacial body bash of "Gray Point" or the deconstructed EBM of "White Line" - Hardester High Frequency proves that TPMP is one to watch!

Review: The concept behind Luke Una's first solo compilation as a selector may be a little bit fuzzy - fundamentally, it's music for watching sunrises and feeling spaced out after a night on the tiles - but the music he's decided to showcase is uniformly fantastic. In-keeping with his famously eclectic approach to music, the 13 tracks on E-Soul Cultura include forays into spiritual jazz (Chene Noir), luscious Brazilian sunshine music (Robson Jorge & Lincoln Olivetti), acid-jazz-goes-deep house (Brand New Heavies), British neo-soul (Typesun), jazz-funk (King Erisson, Yussef Lateef), chant-sporting proto-house madness (Nar'Chiveol), a prime slices of sub-heavy Sheffield brilliance (On's sought-after cover of 'Southern Freeez') and a blissed-out chunk of minimalist electronica from Roman Flugel's Soylent Green project.

Review: Next up on Kompakt's esteemed Spiecher series is Brazilian techno heroine with the powerful and adrenalised acid techno epic "Hidden Beauties" taking you back to a time in the '90s when the likes of Laurent Garnier and Hardfloor reigned supreme - absolutely epic stuff! The jackathon continues on the B side with second offering "The Dansant" with its violent whirling bassline that doesn't rely on the that little silver Roland box like the previous side but still packing as much punch, its aggressive syncopated 909 rhythms rapid firing away in convincingly old school fashion. Just fresh off of it's 100th release, ANNA was a great choice thereafter, following up some killer grooves for top labels such as Turbo, Terminal M, Get Physical and Matador's Rukus imprint to name but a few.

Review: Not to be mixed up with the celebrated English footballer, Alan Shearer is an alias of Frederic Viger, who released albums of minimal wave electronics and synth pop from the mid-80s to the mid-90s. His debut, Dark Is The Colour, is a coveted curio from the mists of time (aka 1985), steeped in all the neon-lit allure you could ever wish for from an album of this ilk. Drum machines galore and glorious synth compositions shot through with a pervading spookiness - it sounds great for the era, not as noisy and lo-fi as similar efforts. Viger knew what he was doing, and now thanks to Favourite this rare gem is available for your listening pleasure.

Review: Run out of Paris by DJ duo Fa_Fane and F.M., DELODIO is bringing a delightfully freaky strain of grubby lo-fi grooves to our attention, pitching somewhere between minimal wave, noisy techno and Balearic splendour. If that sounds appealing you're going to love Froid Dub, comprised of producers Francois Marche and Stephane Bodin cruising through a particularly lopsided abstraction of dub which sounds like it favours the clank of mid-range drum machines from yesteryear and their attendant synths. It's all very in-the-desk, and very cool indeed, with the blissfully surrealism of 'First Floor' being a particular highlight.

Review: This is a must have for all us hapless vinyl obsessives who love the more weird and wonderful records out there. It is a top class collection of all of TV's best theme tunes from over the years. All the classics are included and each one will take you back to some exact moment in time from your past and flood you with feelings of nostalgia and joy. It was a simpler time back then, with just a couple of channel that everyone sat down to watch together ratter the endless dreaming and digital options we have today. This one comes on splattered vinyl for the very first time.

Well, if that's you, relive your youth with this bumper collection of their great hist from arguably their best period - the early nineties on to the turn of the millennium. Rearviewmirror comes in two volumes which really speaks to the number of big tunes the American band put out in their time. Review: Zodiak Commune reaches right back into the early days of the Dutch acid techno and electro scene, and it remains an essential outlet for tough and gnarly rave gear for darkened souls. This new record is a split between Umwelt and Serge Geyzel, continuing a series of split discs pitting serious underground operators against each other. Umwelt's side kicks off with the blistering acid electro of 'The Wake Of The Anthropocene' and follows up with heavy but melodic pearler 'Cosmic Dancer'. Geyzel's 'Off The Ground' is a nervy slice of acid with sad-hearted undertones, and 'Hostage' completes the set with a moody, percussive throwdown.

Review: This one has been a very long time coming indeed. Work on Hapticality began, whether Phataphysical really knew it or not, back in 2013, with tracks crafted between then and 2021. Not that you'd necessarily guess this was an eight year writing process, such is the coherency between the pieces, and the overall sense of being one complete work.

A deep dive to say the least, perhaps what's most astounding is the tangible atmosphere that each track creates individually, all of which contributes to a wider feeling. Hardly easy to achieve, die-hard fans of the ambient outfit, who claim so much more than mere reverence in the scene, will likely contest that point, and argue that they would expect nothing less from these masters of dream-like electronic adventures.

As with previous explorations, the vibes are far-reaching, star-gazing and steeped in jazzy motifs. Review: Tusken Raiders is of course Michael Paradinas, the man behind Planet Mu as well as many of his own killer productions. Famously, this alias had to be put to sleep after George Lucas's lawyers found out about it after one of his releases on Clear back in the day, so he renamed himself Rude Ass Tinker - an anagram the original alias. But now it is back out of retirement for this collection on Further Electronix of all the recent EPs he has released. The tracks are built on brilliantly squelchy electro funk, cosmic techno, brain dance melodies abound and the whole thing comes from a world controlled by AI and robots, but never loses sight of the dancefloor.

Their latest EP/mini-LP/opus, 'The Exile', limps a barefoot trudge over broken glass with violent, cacophonous results. Take the thunderous malevolence of 'Mortal Quarry' or the doomgazing of catastrophic closer, 'The Thread That Will Unravel You', as punishing examples of the unkempt vehement potential seeping its way out of the true north (that's what the Canadians like to call it).

Review: An overlooked spiritual classic in two parts, Yamash'ta & The Horizon were a one-off project consisting of a hat-trick of musicians seeking to perfect their craft. In 1971, Hideakira Sakurai, Masahiko Satoh, Stomu Yamash'ta and Takehisa Kosugi gathered in Japan to perform an invite-only concert to a handful of friends. Deep and distinctive electric shamishen becomes a sonic centrepiece over the course; handled by Sakurai, the sound is haunting, like a lone voice amidst a sea of percussive nymphs. Sloshing koto, percussion and eruptions of awe from the crowd all dominate the moments of downtime; a timeless snapshot of Fluxus Japan.

Kick The Break In (8:43)
Review: Mint Condition has so far proved adept at licensing and reissuing high-grade fare from the 1990s that many people may have missed out on first time around. This single from Dylan Beale, one of two he released as Eze-Ozo back in 1991, is undoubtedly essential: a two-track bleep & breaks excursion that strikes a perfect balance between the alien, sci-fi sounding weight of purist bleep and the rolling energy of early breakbeat hardcore. 'How To Stay Alive' is shuffling, crunchy and sub-heavy, with nods to trippy US deep house as well as early Warp releases, while 'Kick The Break In' comes from the same sonic space as the contemporaneous Original Clique and Ubik releases.

Review: They may have been known for producing crossover hits way back in the early 90s, but Arrested Development have never stopped producing gold. The politically charged, socially conscious crew are a well-oiled machine at this point in time, and you need only listen to a snatch of new album For the FKN Love to understand that. As ever it's fronted by Speech and produced by Configa, but this time around they've invited a plethora of guests from legends like Big Daddy Kane, The Sugarhill Gang, Monie Love and Fatman Scoop through to emergent talent like Twan Mack, Dell-P, Lish and Ke'Andra. It's resulted in a vital statement for the rude health of message-laden hip-hop in 2022.

Original "Union Tenugui" in collaboration with Kamawanu, a tenugui specialty store, with quick-drying and water-absorbent properties useful for summer and outdoor festivals.
Notes: This is an arrangement of the pattern "KOKAWANU," a favorite of Kabuki actor Danjuro Ichikawa VII, with analog records. It was expressed in a refreshing and cool "dark blue and dark blue" colour.

This hand towel is compact enough to carry in your pocket without being bulky, and has excellent water absorbency and quick-drying properties.

It can be used as a handkerchief to wipe sweat, or wrapped around your head or neck to protect you from the sun. It is also useful for festivals and live performances.

It is made by craftsmen using the Chusen dyeing method, which has been used since the Meiji era.

Organizing bleaching, gluing/stapling, dyeing, washing, drying in the sun... These tenugui are painstakingly made by craftsmen who bring their best skills together under the complete division of labour.

Artisans have been using the Chusen dyeing technique since the Meiji era.

Review: Ah Liam Gallagher - a man who never seems to grow old or fully out of touch. Well, depending on your opinions on absolutely everything, of course. The Manchester icon and former-Oasis enfant terrible has spoken from his heart on a range of subjects, from "dance music can fuck right off" to "I am not an entertainer", and understandably his off-the-cuff honesty resonates with both the die hard disciples and sceptics alike. Simply put, nobody can accuse him of not wearing heart on sleeve.

In many ways, that approach guides his latest solo offering, C'Mon You Know. Back in February 2022, three months before this record's release, he told NME "I'm quite happy with the formula... I look cool. I sound good. I talk from the heart." If that's not evidence we're not ranting rubbish we don't know what is. As for the record's sound, think timeless British indie that has one foot in a 1990s glory era of British rock 'n' roll, and another in li-fi contemporary noise, all delivered with operatic drama.

Review: Despite what you might assume, O Yuki Conjugate are actually an English duo. Hailing from the country's renowned hinterland somewhere between ambient and industrial, the pair - better known as Roger Horberry and Andrew Hulme - first started the project in 1982, a time in the nation's history that was particularly fertile for sonic experiments of the synthesised kind.

A Tension of Opposites is proof they have lost little of their imagination and creative spark, even decades later. Born in the first year of the pandemic, 2020, both artists worked in isolation and therefore both had different ideas about how a sonic response to the most batshit crazy situation in living memory should sound. The result, then, is a lush, intoxicating, and thoughtful journey through tonalities, resonance, and deep refrains that offers two sides of the same terrifying, traumatic, and life-changing story.

Review: What is the difference between here and there?
What are the differences between countries and races?
between men and women?
children and adults?
you and me?

We are supposed to be the same person, but we are all different.
We look different, we were born and raised in different environments.
Our personalities are also different.
These differences create interest and new discoveries,
but they also create discrimination and prejudice,
which leads to division.
In recent years, this situation seems to have become more pronounced.

"You and I are different.
But sometimes I might be the same as you."

In this uncertain world,
this is what I wanted to express in this music.

The Trick
Review: The big beat era was responsible for many musical crimes, but there remains a handful of tracks from that period that still sound fantastic 15 years on. The Prodigy's 'Beathe', one of the headiest, heaviest and most incendiary moments from their pioneering rock-rave fusion album Fat of the Land, is amongst that group. This reissued CD single places the edited single version of the track alongside three killer bonus cuts: a riotous, raucous, all-action live version of their anti-Criminal Justice Bill collaboration with Pop Will Eat Itself, 'Their Law'; a suitably gnarled and excitable version of classic single 'Poison' recorded live at the Tourhout & Werchter Festival '96, and 'The Trick', a bouncy and chunky, hip-hop tempo B-side that doffs a cap to Death in Vegas and Meat Beat Manifesto.

Following releases on re:st, UVB-76 and Voidance Records, the Italian producer further explores his introspective sound, joining the dots between experimental psychedelia, dark ambient and post-drum&bass. Opening with the heavy, drone-driven 'Meta' and 'Leave Your Flesh Behind', the pace soon quickens with 'Breaches', a driving 170bpm collaboration with Books (re:st, Detuned Transmissions). The pressure increases on the B-side with a fierce remix by Sam KDC (Auxiliary, Samurai, Sublunar). The EP closes with 'Form Constants', a 2017 dub unavailable until now.

Stockholm's Savio has gifted us reams of flexible, idiosyncratic machine jams over the years, while Finland's Mesak has been on a rampant run of late across labels like Klakson. Through sheer conviction they received appropriate nods, from releasing on Mute to being tipped on the coveted Nurse With Wound list. Drawing on jazz as one of their core influences, their first officially released LP Glamour Girl 1944 landed in 1979 and set the tone for a band shirking convention every step of the way. It is a document of Los Angeles Free Music Society (aka LAFMS)'s second performance at the recital hall of the Brand Library in Glendale in 1976. The band was formed by teenage members in the mid-1970s and mixed up free improvisation with modular synthesizers as well as sampling, musique concrete techniques, noise, avant-rock and plenty more in what were said to be rather anarchic recording sessions. This manic experimental record captures some of that bizarre leftfield magic.

He is the perfect subject of special record store day reissues and that's what we get here from the Gatur label. 'Concentrate' is some high-class mellow magic from 1980. Trees In General: & The Larch (19:56)
Review: The Castles In Space label has been quietly supporting esoteric synth works for the past seven or so years out of their home base in Biggleswade. Amongst the artists they've previously released are Antoni Maiovvi and CHXFX, and now they're presenting a new venture by the name of Twilight Sequence. So far, so synthy. The music on this single-sided one-track sureshot fits the vibe as well, dealing in expertly sculpted melodic patterns interwoven in a manner which sounds like it might well come from a modular set up, such is the undulating movement inherent in the sound and the symbiotic nature of the different elements.

My Part Of Town (4:33)
Mountain's World (3:39)
Review: The Record Store Day drops are coming in thick and fast now and for hip-hop fans this is a heavy one. Neither of these tunes have ever been on a 45 rpm together before. They are classics from the legendary Philly crew with hard breaks and headier bars on 'My Part Of Town' set over a jostling bassline and tough hits. On the flip is 'Mountain's World' which is a deeper and more vibes-joint with less in your face energy and a smarter wordplay as well as some super scratch-work.

Review: Just Mustard's second album is her first for Partisan Records. It is a coherent but widescreen exploration across 10 tracks that all add up to a great whole. Her magic vocals, scything guitars and brooding rock drums all make for intense and scintillant listening. Tracks like 'Seed' roll up and down on lumpy drums with gauzy guitar textures, while there is a more ethereal sound to 'Early' which floats up amongst the stars. 'In Shade' has a catchy post punk rhythm and 'Sore' is dense and caustic shoegaze style rock that drags you with it into a world of questions.

Review: The soundtrack to David Cronenberg's 1983 masterpiece, the Canadian science fiction horror film VIDEODROME has been fully, painstakingly restored from original master tapes over many years. Four decades after first release it remains a classic of the genre that Mondo, Backlot Music and Howe Records now serve up for the first time ever on vinyl. It was produced by Howard Shore and Alan Frey and comes on original artwork by Rich Kelly, with great liner notes by Annette DiGiovanni and pressed on 180 g vinyl. It is a futuristic and cinematic work that has more than stood the test of time.
