Review: Italian singer Elena Ferretti was popular on the Italo and Eurobeat scene between the early '80s, produced by the likes of Giacomo Maiolini, Mauro Farina, Sergio Dall'Ora and Giancarlo Pasquini. One of her best known hits is the song "My World" (as Sophie). Here we have a reissue of Feretti's highly valued Italo classic (to those who know) in the form of "Witch" under the Helen alias - with which she used for half a dozen or so tracks in her career. A typically neon-lit Italo disco anthem of the timeless variety, with additional remixes by Centre Neptune chief Flemming Dalum and mad Aussie Hysteric - both of them giving the track a nice reshape for modern dancefloors.

Review: Assault on Precinct 13 is a 1976 action thriller written, directed, scored, and edited by the one and only John Carpenter. Here the iconic main theme is presented on a special new 12" with a John Anthony Scratch mix. That goes first and layers in a motorik kick beneath the signature sci-fi chords. It's a real heater with some added scratches which are sort of weirdly out of place but brilliant. A second, only slightly different remix is also included, making this a perfect slab for those wanting to being a little sci-fi mystique to their sets.

Review: Mark Tower (real name Marco Silingardi) started DJing in 1973 while in secondary school. In the late '70s, he started his career as a professional DJ, attending various discos in northern Italy between 1982 - 1985 when he quit the DJ scene. He is regarded as a legend for his techniques behind the decks, incorporating reel-to-reel techniques which were quite innovative for the time. His first release 'You Aren't Fall In Love' was released on Discomagic back in 1983, and is reissued here on Felmming Dalum's ZYX Music. The glimmering neon-lit Italo disco of the original comes in both the original vocal and instrumental versions, as well as remixes by Dalum, Longdrink and Victor Ark - the latter's roaring rendition being our pick of the bunch.

Review: Dark Entries are masters of reissuing the tunes that are out of the financial reach of many of us. This timeless and utterly singular slice of Italo disco magic was bootlegged originally back in around 2015 and then the label decided to reissue it properly in 2016, with a remastered set of tunes for maximum playback effect. They now issue a special 40th-anniversary version. The 1982 bombshell, originally out on Discomagic Records, goes by the name of 'The Man From Colours' and it is a special track indeed, one that's full of romantic charm, mystery and plenty of proto-house vibes. Its vocals will be embedded in your mind forever upon first listen, and you get an instrumental cut on the flip, too.

Review: San Francisco's Dark Entries label does a good line in reissuing obscure, long-forgotten, left-of-centre gems (their excellent collection of Patrick Cowley's little-known soundtrack work for gay porn films, School Daze, was arguably one of the compilations of 2013). Here, they've unearthed another overlooked gem - Art Fine's previously rare-as-hen's-teeth dark Italo-disco gem 'Dark Silence'. It's pretty much a straight copy of the New Wave-inclined original, with the sparser, looser 'Long Version' joining the dense 'Art Fine Version'.

Review: Quinn Martin's 'One More Mission' is an Italo disco classic from 1987 on the Academy label. It has become something of a cult classic which of course means that finding a decent copy on wax, at a reasonable price, is all but impossible. Enter the good folk at ZYX in Germany who have managed to fully licence this reissue on nice special blue vinyl. The original version is a mid tempo and rather heavy hearted disco chugger with deadpan male vocals and sweet female falsettos. On the flip you will also find 'Another Version' which pull apart the arrangement for subtle tweaks.

Review: On its initial release in 1983, 'Dolce Vita' - the debut singe from Fabio Roscioli under the Anglicised Ryan Paris alias - sold five million copies in Europe, briefly turning the Italian artist into a colossal star. This 40th anniversary reissue naturally features both versions from the original 12" - the glossy, mid-tempo cheeriness of the Italo-disco-goes-synth-pop flex of the 'Extended Mix' - and the similar sounding instrumental. Over on side B, we get the obligatory remixes. Review: Hypnosis (more often than not written 'Hipnosis') enjoyed success in their native Italy in the early-to-mid 1980s, initially with club-focused Italo-disco interpretations of then contemporary cuts by fellow European synth-fanciers. Having debuted in 1983 with a cover of Vangelis's 'Pulstar', they followed it up by taking on Jean-Michel Jarre's global smash 'Oxygene'. Here it gets a deserved reissue, allowing a new generation to revel in its alluring mixture of arpeggio-style bass, rubbery bass guitar licks, cascading electronics, triple-time drums and electrofunk inspired translations of Jarre's famous, insatiably hooky melody. Also included is original B-side 'Borpaz', a deliciously spacey, delay-laden original composition that includes some seriously funky synth licks and a proper early morning groove.

Review: Hard-hitting Italo/darkwave from Italian group Kirlian Camera, a longtime act in the genres and one of their many defining bands. 'Communicate' is reissued from an initial release in 1983, and is as dubious and 'dark' as this kind of music can get, sounding like what would have happened to Talking Heads if each member had been given a hoverbike and rode it into a Miami sunset. Remixes from Flemming Dalum and Vanzetti & Sacco appear on the B-side - while brightening, warming and changing the instruments in parts, they prove little needs to be altered about the track in order to bring out its best parts.

The project was spearheaded by Alexander Henninger and Ken Taylor, who had a barrel of laughs cutting up dark and punchy box jams with some cheeky Big Apple samples for the kind of unexpected dancefloor drop which will always incite a reaction from the crowd. Review: 1980s Italo disco don Alan Ross dropped his most well known jam 'The Last Wall' back in 1986. It has aged to perfection and still sounds like future music almost 40 years later, which is part of the reason it rams a classic that costs a few quid for an original. The ever reliable ZYX though has reissued it here on coloured vinyl 12" and includes the original as well as a pair of remixes. That OG version is all about the sugary sweet synth chords and skyward arps next to vocals that remind of Erasure. Review: Swiss venue Zukunft Club Zurich made the logical expansion into a record label earlier this year with Zukunft Recordings, which was inaugurated in fine fashion by The Legendary Lightness, with Ripperton making the 12" all the more special thanks to his wonderful remix. Zukunft clearly felt there was further room to explore "Hey Ron" with two more remixes pressed up for their second 12" release. Review: Zon Records has released music digitally before, though this is the first time the wilfully eclectic Belgian label - and the producers behind the label, also called Zon - has made it onto wax. As vinyl debuts go, it's pretty good. They set their stall out with title track 'Keys For Days', a warming and sun-splashed slab of tech-tinged deep house peppered with warming chords, jazzy synth-bass and subtle TB-303 motifs, before diving into deeper, more immersive territory on the gorgeous, sunrise-ready 'Spring Break' (featuring vocalisations from Lotte Sarembe). Over on the reverse, 'Upon Us' is an analogue-rich chunk of deep tech-house, while Ukrainian producer Kirik's remix of the same track is a far more bass-heavy, tactile and otherworldly affair.

Review: Zodiak Commune reaches right back into the early days of the Dutch acid techno and electro scene, and it remains an essential outlet for tough and gnarly rave gear for darkened souls. This new record is a split between Umwelt and Serge Geyzel, continuing a series of split discs pitting serious underground operators against each other. Umwelt's side kicks off with the blistering acid electro of 'The Wake Of The Anthropocene' and follows up with heavy but melodic pearler 'Cosmic Dancer'. Geyzel's 'Off The Ground' is a nervy slice of acid with sad-hearted undertones, and 'Hostage' completes the set with a moody, percussive throwdown.

'Dystopia' opens up with hefty drums and molten 303 lines ripping up the groove then ever-heavier percussion really hammers things home. 'Lights Off' is more intense, with oversized drums and prickly acid next to howling winds and real machine-gun laser urgency. Review: Dutch acid techno collective Zodiak Commune has been bringing the heat to the Netherlands club scene for over two decades now, adding fuel to the fire with their latest EP release '303 Fifth Pattern'. Released as both a ten-track digital compilation and a four-track EP series, it comes as a raucous addition to their oeuvre, each track describing a hallucino-hellish factory floor. Review: Acid Machines Vol 1 by G303 is the latest release by the long time Dutch label Zodiak Commune and these four tracks, combined, add up to one heck of a wicked acid techno record. 'Acid Dropping' is a crushing piece of acid trance. 'Power Corrupts' is a breakneck speed techno killer - you've got to love the classic Belgium sounding doom to it, it takes us right back to 1992. Review: Zodiak Commune has become a tried and true outpost for edgy electro in recent times, and they've been incubating the talent of Dima Gastroler across a run of releases in 2024. The run of form continues as Gastroler locks in with 'Zero Tolerance', an icy blast of machine funk with strafing synths in the classic electro style. There's similar movement sweeping across 'REConnection', albeit with more pronounced acidity in the lead lines. 'Instinct' keeps the pressure up with the dirtiest of basslines and razor sharp beats, and then a more melodic tint creeps into EP closer 'Agnetic Storm' to end the record on a more sombre note.

Review: The latest release from the French label Zingiber Audio is simply called Split EP #001 and it features the label founder Cor100 (Thibaut Corsant) and the UK duo Acanalar. For the first side Cor100 gives us the super slick tribal builder 'Housetest 2'. The track takes through ups and downs that allow any DJ playing it to transfer perfectly to any direction you wish to take it. Nice groove! 'Vase De Chine' on the other hand, is an addictively sexy dancefloor heater. On the second side, 'PO144' is a deep chugging more minimalistic track with some nice melodic elements surrounding it. 'PO148' finishes the EP with a fun romp into a more tribal psychedelic zone. The label's 12th release to date brings us four classy tracks to enjoy.

Review: Only 100 copies of this mystical and deeply moody 12" from Zimp Recordings main man Filthy Rich, meaning you'll have to act fast if you want one. It's well worth picking up though, not least because opener 'The Kraken (Davy Jones Mix)' is a deliciously clandestine chunk of underwater techno full of nightmare-inducing spoken word vocals and creepy electronics. The EP's other significant moment is 'Two Tone Bass', a stomping slab of fuzz-soaked industrial techno that remixer Randolph also turns into a slamming, lo-fi techno assault on the senses. Elsewhere, 'Wiff Waff (Wallpaper Mix)' is a bouncy techno roller that (somewhat hilariously) samples speeches by Alexander Boris De Pfeffel Johnson, and 'Stinky Funk' is a thrusting masterclass in weighty techno-funk.

His Rave EP collides many different influences from techno to electro, acid to rave, and also chucks in some classic samples to really make the tunes pop. There is plenty of cosmic urgency to the electro-tech of 'B-A-D' and all its withering sci-fi aesthetics. Freerange boss and deep house Don Jimspter goes first and brings real sunshine to his take on 'He Is.' Detroit badman Andres then does what he does best to 'I Recognise', that is layering in hip hop slanted beats and nice rolling baselines under lush chords. On the flip are two more positive house vibrations to make this a handy EP.

Review: In its full digital form, Z Records' excellent Life's Better With Disco Comp is an epic 37 tracks deep. Naturally there aren't that many cuts on this sampler 12", but the four on show are undoubtedly amongst the set's many highlights. Boss man Dave Lee kicks things off via a superb classic disco-meets-nu-disco revision of Firefly's 'Love Is Gunna Be On Your Side', before there's a chance to cop an obscure Backroom Productions rework of their early proto-house/garage-house gem (as Ruffneck), 'The Power - The Rhythm'. The mid-'80s fun continues on Larry Levan's vintage remix of Jonny Dynell's 'Rhythm of Love' - a killer fusion of dubbed-out synths and drums and Konk style Latin percussion - while Doug Willis' 'Doug's Disco Theme' is a classic disco-house number from Lee under one of his many alternative aliases.
