Review: Fargo Year Five is the fifth instalment of the acclaimed series Fargo and it debuted on screens back in November 21, 2023, and rolled out ten more gripping episodes. Continuing the tradition, Jeff Russo crafted the captivating music for this season, as he did for the preceding four. Notably, Russo clinched the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Music Composition for a Limited Series, Movie, or Special in 2017 for his exceptional work on Fargo. Besides his prowess in television composition, Russo is revered as one of the founding members of the band Tonic, showcasing his multifaceted talent across various facets of the music industry, and this score is as good as all the ones that came before it.

Review: Uplifting trance is very much back in right now but before there a scene to revive, Nicholas Bracegirdle, a.k.a. Chicane, was one of the artists very much at the forefront of the first wave. Behind the Sun was his second studio album and it came back in March 2000 and truly secured his status as a worldwide star. The album gave rise to four hit singles 'Saltwater,' 'Don't Give Up,' 'No Ordinary Morning' / 'Halcyon, and 'Autumn Tactics. Both 'Saltwater' featuring Maire Brennan and 'Don't Give Up' achieved remarkable commercial success, topping the UK Dance Singles Chart and the latter in particular soared into the top ten on singles charts across Europe and North America. Pressed on 180 gram audiophile vinyl for this reissue, it is well worth copping.

Review: It's surprisingly not that common for a director to pick music for their movie. There are accomplished experts at scouring and sourcing the most powerful and moving tunes for cinema, and, of course, composers who have established themselves as maestros of silver screen scores. Luca Guadagnino is an exception to the rule, then, with his coming-of-age drama, Call Me By Your Name, soundtracked via his choices. And what choices they are. The film itself is beautiful and incredibly moving, adjectives which also apply to the accompanying sounds. From the theatrical pop of Loredana Berte, to the staggering instrumentation of Ryuichi Sakamoto and heartfelt cries of Sufjan Stevens, this collection of tones is as varied as it is captivating from beginning to end, and - whether you've seen the flick or not - deserves a place on everyone's shelf.

Review: Eddie Harris was an iconic American jazz musician who revolutionised the genre by introducing the electrically amplified saxophone. With a prolific career spanning over 50 albums, Harris seamlessly blended jazz with funk, earning Grammy Award nominations for two of his groundbreaking records. Among them, the 1983 release People Get Funny..s' stands out. Featuring tracks like 'People Get Funny When They Get A Little Money' and 'La Carnival' which exemplify his signature jazz-funk fusion with captivating vocals and scatting, it las has other gems like 'Silver Plated,' which showcase a more traditional jazz-hard-bop style. Accompanied by talented musicians like drummer Carl Burnett, electric pianist William S. Henderson III, and bassist Larry Gales, this limited edition release of People Get Funny... is pressed on translucent pink vinyl.

Review: US3's debut album Hand On The Torch was a landmark record when it dropped back in 1993. At a time when the world was getting to grips with sample culture, Blue Note reached out to the London-based crew and gave them access to the archives. With such a rich pool of source material, they got busy strapping iconic breaks and licks from one of the great jazz stables to crisp beats. There's a lot of ground covered, with hip-hop jams sidling up alongside funky beatdowns and plenty more besides. It's a stone cold classic given the reissue treatment, bringing the likes of 'Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia)' back to life for a new generation.

Spanning over two hours, this mix showcases the genre's continued diversity and evolution and features tracks from both established artists and rising talents. With seamless transitions and expertly curated selections, van Buuren captures the essence of the trance scene in 2023 with all the usual hallmarks - from uplifting melodies to driving beats, euphoric atmospheres to epic synth lines. As such this it a must-listen and more proof no one quite knows the genre like Armin.

Review: Since its release in 1997, David Lynch's neo-noir-horror, Lost Highway, has become something of a cult classic. The accompanying soundtrack album, here reissued on weighty double vinyl, is similarly revered in some circles. Put together by Nine Inch Nails' frontman Trent Reznor, composer Angelo Badalamenti, and punk-turned-producer Barry Adamson, it's a mish-mash of darkly intense songs (Bowie, Smashing Pumpkins, Lou Reed and Rammstein all contribute), and the kind of creepy, other-worldly soundscapes that have always been a feature of Lynch's work. It's arguably the latter tracks, composed by Badalementi and Adamson, which remain creepily potent all these years on.

Review: Nina Simone has rather been written out of popular music history because of quite how confrontational and proudly Black she was. She was just as far ahead of her times musically too and this legendary album Baltimore shows why. It arrived with no promotion and no lead singles and so it was an utter commercial failure, but the sleuths of the internet have rediscovered it over the 45 years since its release and helped to make it a cult favourite now regarded as one of the best in her oeuvre. It has distinctive reggae production and of course plenty of beautiful vocals from Simone as she tackles songs written by Judy Collins, Hall & Oates, and Randy Newman.

Review: In a discography that is jam packed with high quality albums, Miles Davis's Sorcerer is one of the standouts. Now newly reissued by Music on Vinyl, it transports listeners into the heart of 1967's avant-garde jazz landscape when it was originally released as part of Davis's Second Great Quintet era. The music showcases the maestro's pioneering fusion of modal jazz and free improvisation from the enigmatic title track to the haunting Prince of Darkness. Davis and his ensemble craft a sonic tapestry that mesmerises with every note here and Wayne Shorter's evocative saxophone, Herbie Hancock's masterful piano, and Tony Williams's dynamic drumming all help make that so.

Review: The fact Sophie Zelmani has had her work poached for hyper-emotional TV and movie spots, from Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Dawson's Creek, to Independence Day, speaks volumes about how much heart and soul she packs into the songs themselves. Made to make you feel, her self-titled debut LP landed in 1995, and immediately catapulted her from suburban life in her native Stockholm, and out into the common conscience of global listeners. First arriving in 2002, Sing & Dance was Zelmani's fourth studio album, and by this point a real identity had been formed. Fusing soft rock, country, adult alternative, folk, and quirky pop, at her softest she'll lull you into a waking dream of beauty and heartache, at her most upbeat it feels like you've wandered into a fire lit bar just as the locals reach fever pitch.

Review: Mikey Dread was a legend of reggae as a producer, DJ and singer, who gained international fame for working with The Clash on 'Bankrobber' and mixing dub versions for their Black Market Clash and Sandinista! albums. Through his Dread At The Controls label he released reams of incredible dub and roots reggae himself, with World War III surely one of the highlights. With the Roots Radics as the backing band and the likes of Earl Sixteen and Watty Burnett on backing vocals, the cast of characters is steeped in reggae's golden era, and sure enough the sound is as good as you'd expect. This welcome reissue comes on yellow vinyl - a beam of sunshine as uplifting as the riddims carved into the grooves.

It drew together all their finest moments from the proceeding decade but gets the full reissue treatment here with limited numbered gatefold 180 gram and coloured wax. The Belgian rock band hail from Antwerp and in their heyday mixed up alt-rock, post-grunge and folk rock on a series of albums that went gold and platinum in various countries around the world. This collection has all the big, stadium-sized tunes as well as the more quiet moments of introspective calm. It's a great reminder of a band that had a big impact at the turn of the millennium.

Johnson became an acclaimed talent after working on several best-selling rock steady and proto-reggae 45s by the likes of Lee 'Scratch' Perry, the Rulers, Carl Dawkins and the Kingstonians. His productions had never before been collected together until this compilation from Trojan Records in 1969. It showed the reggae master's new and fresh take on the tried and tested sound and was dominated by tunes from well-known and frequent hit-makers the Ethiopians. The likes of Roy Shirley and the J.J. All Stars also feature and are taken from 1968 to 1972.

Review: We can only begin to image how Silverchair felt taking to the stage at Chicago's legendary Cabaret Metro. It's 1994, and the band aren't even old enough to buy a drink (members are still only 15), but their spectacular debut, Frogstomp, has already positioned them as Australia's great post-grunge hope, meaning a venue famed for seminal shows by scene deities like Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Smashing Pumpkins - among others - would mean the world to the young upstarts.
Live was the resulting album, initially released on promotional CD only, packing seven tracks of pure on-stage energy, cacophony, and guitar-first dirt, alongside a special bonus bit at the end. Available now for the first time ever on black plastic, with just 5000 copies pressed, it's what you might call a veritable piece of 1990s rock history.

The album was certified gold six months after release and then double platinum by 1992. Four of the tracks were new for the collection including 'Viva Las Vegas', 'Suspicious Minds', 'Don't Cry Daddy' and 'Kentucky Rain.' The rest of them are well known and perfectly aged tunes for the hardcore Elvis fan.

Review: Krush's eighth - and last - album Jaku is up there with Endtroducing and Donuts in terms of seminal, influential and forward-thinking beat longer players. 10 years since its release and it still sounds as timeless, unique and exciting as it did in 2004. The slick licks of a young Mr Lif on "Nosferatu", the post-apocalyptic tension of "Univearth" the sludgy, swampy cosmic hip-hop of the Aesop Rock-featured "Kill Switch" and the unashamed sax sex of "Slit Of Cloud"..... Do we need to go on? Limited edition, 180g transparent vinyl; even if you already have this in your collection this is a very, very appealing investment.

Review: This recording of the Philadelphia Orchestra performing Sergei Prokofiev's 1936 story and orchestral score Peter and the Wolf was recorded in 1977 and was originally released in 1978. The role of the narrator on the recording was initially offered to both Peter Ustinov and Alec Guinness who both turned it down, before David Bowie agreed to take on the role, supposedly as a Christmas present to his son. On the B-side is another equally as charming piece of recent classical history, Benjamin Britten's Young Person's Guide To The Orchestra as narrated by Hugh Downs.

Review: The Stones Roses endure as a popular indie band decades after they were really relevant. Some of their biggest moments were all touched up by a selection of remixes who were at least loosely associated with early acid house, baggy and the indie dance cross over of the same period. 808 State go first and flip 'Made of Stone' into an electric big of indie-techno. Grooverider flips the most iconic of them all, 'Fools Gold', into a low riding breakbeat roller while Paul Oakenfold & Steve Osborne's Verizon of 'Waterfall' leaves al the glorious tumbling guitar melodies intact and beefs up the beats.

Review: Is Archive's Londinium one of the best trip-hop albums of all time? For some, it is. For many, it's somehow criminally unknown. This reissue 25 years on should change all that. The music of Archive, which was formed by Darius Keeler and Danny Griffiths with singer Roya Arab and young rapper Rosko John, has aged well. The soaring strings, slowly lurching beats and meditative grooves all sit up there with any of their more famous peers, from Tricky to Massive Attack. This anniversary edition includes a 4-page booklet with song lyrics and credits, plus a hidden track.

Silver Town is their fourth studio album and it gave rise to several singles including 'A Place in the Sun' and 'Rain Steam & Speed.' There is a distinctly British feel to the happy-go-lucky tunes, with musings on plenty of uniquely English things grooves that bring to mind a good old knees up in a barn. This 180 gram audiophile vinyl has a gatefold sleeve and is limited to 500 individually numbered copies on flaming coloured vinyl.

Review: There was a significant outpouring of grief when the death of Frederick 'Toots' Hibbert was announced in September. It was evidence of the ongoing love affair that many in the UK have with the music of Toots & The Maytals, a band who had been serving up ska and reggae records - and performing them live in Britain - since the late 1960s. The good news is that Hibbert lives on through his music, and 1981 album Knock Out - here reissued on vinyl - is one of he and his band's best. Breezy, warm and quietly soulful, the album boasts such as memorable songs as 'Revival Time', the synth-sporting 'Spend The Weekend', the loved-up 'Beautiful Woman' and the jaunty, Clavinet-heavy 'I Know We Can Make It'.

Their debut album came in 1967 but it is their second and last full length The Miraculous Hump Returns From The Moon from 1973 that gets reissued here. Fans consider it a next level work which might explain why a good copy of an original will cost you a few quid these days. It's a record - and really one of the lost classics of the era - that has stood the test of time and still bangs today for the way it so uniquely mixes up FM schmaltz, prog-rock, jazz, showtunes, Krautrock and Indian classical music.

Review: Jupiter were kings of the middle of the road indie sound that dominated back at the turn of the millennium. If you don't remember the name you will remember the music as they topped charts and got heavy TV play, not least for most notable single 'I Wish You Would'. All in all this is an album of heartwarming and emotional indie pop niceness you're likely to fall head over heels for again, hence the fact it has been covered by innumerable stars since its initial release. In many ways, once you know the story the track takes on a very different form - far less amorous and much more about longing and lamentation. This latest reissue comes in red and black marble vinyl.

Review: With roots in a band called Shake Appeal, who were informed by The Stooges and MC5, among other late-60s garage rockers, by the time we got to Mezcal Head, Swervedriver's second album, the group had turned their attention to what was blowing up Stateside. Taking a lead from the likes of Dinosaur Jr and - to less of a wall of sound extent - Sonic Youth, they combined elements of then fertile grunge and shoegaze scenes, to make a noisy but coherent whole. Released in 1993, the sophomore record first hit on the mighty Creation Records, which is a seal of approval if ever there was one. While still failing to really penetrate the mainstream, everyone from NME to Alternative Press heaped praise on the work, and listening back it's easy to hear why. Rough and ready guitar work meets a lackadaisically cool atmosphere, energy like a coiled spring at times.

Review: "If you had four songs ready-ish, you would record them there and then and put them all out ASAP. No such thing as 'saving songs for the album' back then," says Swervedriver's Jimmy Hartridge of life in a rock 'n' roll band during the early-1990s, late-1980s. The philosophy certainly explains a lot about urgency at the time, and why the band's debut album only featured six original songs in the end. 'Rave Down', 'Son of a Mustang', and 'Sandblasted' all featured on shorter releases amid a flurry of activity that saw four EPs hit between 1990 and 1991, leading up to the big reveal. Perhaps what's remarkable is the fact this approach didn't detract from sales, but instead build anticipation and hunger. When it finally landed, Raise was heralded as one of the finest moments in shoegaze at the time, with the grungier, garage-y, alt-rock tones the outfit would soon be known for are already audible.

'Are You Normal?' was the second of their three studio albums, and catches the band breaking away from their trademark 'grebo' grooving to exoeirment with electronics and sampling.

They went through some mad stylistic changes in that time but remain best known for their hit singles 'Tomorrow Night' which hit number 11 in the UK charts and number four gem 'Devil's Answer', which both came in 1971. Neither of them feature on their self-titled album and debut from 1970 which itself made the Top 50 of the UK album charts, but it still packs a real punch with a prog rock feel.

Review: The Fall apparently weren't thrilled with Rough Trade focusing so many resources on the Smiths, not least as it meant the full length video they wanted to make to accompany this, their sixth studio album, would not be possible, while the other band got the money to make one. Mark E Smith and company's response was to produce their own, and in many ways the 52-minute Perverted By Language Bis, directed by multifaceted French enigma Claude Bessy, remains one of the archetypal pieces of Fall iconography. The music isn't bad on its own, either, opening on the relentlessly catchy 'Eat Y'self Fitter', once described as "endlessly cycling rockabilly chug with extra keyboard oddities and sudden music-less exchanges for the chorus." 'Neighbourhood of Infinity' then picks up the pace, and grit, and we're soon in deep. A record that impresses musically and in terms of forward thinking production (see: 'Garden') without sacrificing the grass roots energy of post punk at the time.

Review: Before we even get to the music, shall we talk about this album title? Easily up there with the best named records of all time, thankfully this is matched in the quality of the music itself. All-British blues rock 'n' roll at its grittiest and funkiest, and most musically impressive. A showcase of exquisite guitar and piano work, and songwriting, marks the debut of Chicken Shack, the group founded by Stan Webb, Andy Silvester, and Alan Morley, who also enlisted Christine Perfect, later Fleetwood Mac's Christine McVie. Comprising ten predominantly rather short tracks (most are around three minutes), this format only leaves us wanting more as the record plays out. There's the classic heartbroken ode 'Lonesome Whistle Blues', the fraught six string solos of 'See See Baby', and the rowdy bar-in-a-track that is 'San Ho Zay' to get you started, but really everything on here is gold.

Fronted by leader Joe Zawinul, the ensemble evolved subtly throughout their career and it was in 1974 that they dropped this album, Sweetnighter. It proved to be a little more funky and influenced by the emerging t&b of the day than its predecessors and it is also noted for being the last long player the band cut with original bassist Miroslav Vitous, as well as being the band's first album to make it into the Top 100 in the US charts of the day. It sodas as good now as ever on this nice heavyweight vinyl pressing.

Review: Martin Scorsese's Martin Scorsese Presents The Blues series may not be the Academy Award-winning director's most famous contribution to popular culture, but the PBS documentary film saga, in which the legendary director takes us on a journey through the development of a sound he holds dear to his heart, is well worth looking for. Featuring luminaries such as John Lee Hooker, Lightnin' Hopkins, Muddy Waters, and more, each episode welcomes a different filmmaker, allowing them to refocus on artists they love. For this album spin-off, we centre attention on the mighty Stevie Ray Vaughan, one of the most influential of all blues musicians who tragically died at the age of 35 in a helicopter crash. Although far younger than many of the greats he's often listed alongside, his exceptional abilities on the guitar, and often unique sonics, set him apart from almost anyone else, alive or dead. Listen to what we mean here.

Originally back released in 1987, the album features iconic tracks like 'Funky Beat' and 'Rock You Again (Again & Again).' With its innovative production and charismatic performances, 'Open Sesame' solidified WHODINI's status as one of the most influential groups in the genre. From start to finish, the album exudes a sense of excitement and creativity, leaving a lasting impact on hip-hop music which means it might sound of its time but it remains a classic and an essential listen for any fan of old-school rap.

Review: Yellow Music Orchestra, or simply YMO as many people call them, are THE Japanese electropop band, and their diverse output dates all the way back to the late 1970s, when groups such as Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream were at their prime. Music On Vinyl, who unsurprisingly come up with the goods yet again, have decided to reissue 1983's Service LP, a much coveted piece of diverse electronic dance music. Given the vast number of tunes on here, there's something for everyone to salivate to, and whether it's beat-centric coldwave or quirky, melodic pop, YMO were undoubtedly ahead of the game back then, and you'll even hear plenty of pre Detroit electro in there. Another masterful release from this prodigious imprint.

Message To Mankind (3:52)
Fuzz Oriental Blues (6:47)
Review: A serious RSD reissue here as Music On Vinyl reanimate the cult afro-funk's one and only 45" on Pye sub-label Dawn. Emphatic, layered, energetic and dizzying - just like their albums Afreaka and Roots & Offshoots - each cut is bewilderingly funky and soulful experience. The lead track is one of the best Screamin' Jay Hawkins covers ever pressed to wax, "Message To Mankind" tips a nod to the Tamla school of thought with a belting yearn for better times while "Fuzs Oriental Blues" is just a straight up savage blues jam with some firing Afro twists towards the finale. Stone cold; this one won't hang around for long.

Review: Klaus Schulze and Peter Namlook's The Dark Side Of The Moog series receives a timely update on vinyl, having only been reissued a handful of times since its first release in the early to mid 90s. Much like the second volume, which should be bought in conjuction with this opener, you'll be stuck to find any better sources of ambient or drone on these charts. Yes, the modern kids might verge further into the heart of the rave, but this music has a way of lifting the soul that's rarely matched. Led by images of time and space, the legendary duo's music is truly capable of tele-transporting you into a higher state of consciousness; the best thing about it is how rich and fresh it sounds upon each new listen. Highly recommended.

Review: Perspective: Raymond Scott create these albums in 1962 when he was in his mid 50s. Even to this day they sound relevant and entirely futuristic. A true electronic pioneer, he was generations before his time... And was clearly on a mission to influence future generations about electronic music from the earliest age possible with the Soothing Sounds For Babies albums. Dubby, loopy, clever, detailed and spacious - we're not sure whether they were scientifically proven to soothe babbers (some of the more intense loops are way too stimulating) but they definitely soften our souls. A unique moment in electronic music history.

Review: Essential reissue alert: Arguably one of his most influential albums of his illustrious career, Wally's third album Echoes has matured incredibly well, joining the dots between electronica, island music, reggae, pop and ambient better than most self-styled Balearic DJs. Sampled by the likes Massive Attack ("Mambo") and Pete Herbert ("Chief Inspector"), we're moved through the moods in such a simplistic but warm, dynamic way as Wally switches from shedding a tear on the Scarface-era Moroder style "Canyons" to shedding a few pounds on the runaway boogie cut "Endless Race". Still sounding current 32 years deep, there's a reason the likes of Grace Jones, Level 42, Herbie Hancock and Black Uhuru worked with him.

Review: For those that don't know, Ex:El was the third LP by British electronic pioneers 808 State released in 1991. The album features guest vocalists such as New Order's Bernard Sumner on "Spanish Heart' and Bjork on "Qmart" and "Ooops" which would result in the Icelandic singer having a continued working relationship with Graham Massey over the years. Their teaming up with figures of the alternative music scene of the time started a trend that many other electronic music groups would become to follow. Perceived by many to be one of their finest albums, this one will be a welcome edition to any 808 State fans collection on vinyl.

Review: Music On Vinyl return with another blinding reissue by composer Philip Glass! Heroes Symphony, or sometimes referred to as Symphony No.4, was created by Glass back in 1996 as an accompaniment to David Bowie's Heroes album. It's not necessarily one of his better known works but it contains that familiar Glassian mystique and musical freedom which characterises so many of his classical productions.

Review: Released in 2007, a year before he left us, the prolific and hugely influential Belgian composer Moulin gave us this parting message; I Am You taps deep into his musical roots while whirling to late 80s acid jazz and staring point blank into a neo soul future. The result remains a timeless document that ties together all notions of jazz, soul and modern studio techniques. From the existential poetry of the title track to the dark alley dynamics of "Hazard" where Mancini meets Mark Mac via the Beedle-esque boogie and sweet house shuffle of "Music Is My Husband", I Am You set a benchmark for all music writers who wish to remain relevant with multiple generations. A perfectly timed reissue, grab this while you can.

Review: Latin soul by way of Holland and Germany, Zuco 103 reflect over their 15 year discography and handpick 17 gems for their first best of collection. Lilian Vieira's honeyed tones are the driving force as keys man Stefan Schmid and rhythm man Stefan Kruger explore every corner of the dance beneath her (from afrobeat to dub to Cuban to stinking bass-fuelled tech). Highlights include the smoky, Masters At Work style soul of "Treasure", the glitchy gurgles and bumps and other worldly bass of "Morro Eletrico" and the rusty Rhodes and seaside samba of "No Bar Do Samba".

Review: Seen as one of the most influential albums of the 1980s, Black Celebration was instrumental to the solidification of the synthpop sound, and in 1985, it must have sounded like nothing else at the time - even now, its luscious synths and sunken vocals just sound miles ahead. While many people have tried and ultimately failed to emulate this sound, Black Celebration will remain a gem until the end of time. Another stunning Music On Vinyl unearthing.

Review: Music On Vinyl - the kind souls they are - have beautifully reissued all the best of Depeche Mode, a band so diverse and important to the development of modern music that it seems difficult to describe them in mere words. Released in 1993, Songs Of Faith And Devotion was an absolute hit when it first came out on Mute and was the first of the band's albums to reach the top of the chart. The mood was rawer, more violent than its predecessors and cloaked in a warm blanket of grunge rock. Check it if you haven't already.

Review: It's nice to see TV music scores being pressed onto vinyl in an age of computerised music. It's even nicer to see this specific score being officially released because it really transmits a mood of its own and one that's wrapped in a smoky, 50s kinda vibe. Mad Men has been one of the most successful American TV shows next to The Wire and Breaking Bad, and we always thought the music was blisteringly good! David Carbonara delivers an ethereal mixture of ambient, jazz and improv, making this a worthy addition to any collector's discography. Red vinyl, too!
