Review: The third full-length from Canada's greatest thrash metal act, Annihilator, was met with initial puzzlement upon its release in 1993. 'Set The World On Fire' saw the band straw away from the more metallic route of albums such as 'Alice In Hell', in favour of a more radio-friendly approach. Time working its nostalgic magic has led to cuts like, 'Knight Jumps Queen', and, 'Brain Dance', becoming live staples since, while many have grown to appreciate the expansive and accessible scope the project exuded. The final full-length to feature bassist Wayne Darley, as well as their final work with renowned metal label Roadrunner, this reissue comes at a retrospective time where artists can cherish their once misunderstood works, and offer them up to new legions of eager, less judgemental fans.

Review: British rock band Atomic Rooster - made up from members of The Crazy World of Arthur Brown aka organ player Vincent Crane and sticks man Carl Palmer - had success in the 70s and 80s. They went through some mad stylistic changes in that time but remain best known for their hit singles 'Tomorrow Night' which hit number 11 in the UK charts and number four gem 'Devil's Answer', which both came in 1971. Neither of them feature on their self-titled album and debut from 1970 which itself made the Top 50 of the UK album charts, but it still packs a real punch with a prog rock feel.

Review: Since its release in 1997, David Lynch's neo-noir-horror, Lost Highway, has become something of a cult classic. The accompanying soundtrack album, here reissued on weighty double vinyl, is similarly revered in some circles. Put together by Nine Inch Nails' frontman Trent Reznor, composer Angelo Badalamenti, and punk-turned-producer Barry Adamson, it's a mish-mash of darkly intense songs (Bowie, Smashing Pumpkins, Lou Reed and Rammstein all contribute), and the kind of creepy, other-worldly soundscapes that have always been a feature of Lynch's work. It's arguably the latter tracks, composed by Badalementi and Adamson, which remain creepily potent all these years on.

Review: Denis Villeneuve's psychological thriller about a man who sees his doppelganger in a movie, and begins an obsessive search for the look-alike, is a strange, tense, highly stylised dive into a world that's informed by some of the masters of surrealist tension. At times invoking landmark mind-benders such as David Lynch's Lost Highway, albeit with a far less experimental narrative structure, to say its score works hard to set the tone is putting it mildly.
Created by Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans, Enemy's soundtrack is a joy, but also thoroughly trippy. It's unnerving, and yet inviting, laidback while also mournful, and always has this air of the unknown and uncertain about it. Boasting white noise, strings, drones, woodwind, elements of classical, jazz and library sounds are all here, at times invoking space age imagery, in other moments taking use back to the great mysteries of 20th Century cinema.

Review: Blaqk Audio aka AFI members Davey Havok and Jade Puget dropped their second album Bright Black Heaven back in 2012. It now gets reissued via Music On Vinyl and has been cut on 45rpm for extra low-end punchy and louder volume. It comes on individually hand-numbered clear vinyl and is housed in a gatefold sleeve so is a special collector's piece indeed. Upon release, the album topped the US charts in the Billboard Dance and Electronic categories and has a moody synth vibe, darl pop sounds and plenty of 80s flourishes all bottled up with some gothic overtones.

Review: Before we even get to the music, shall we talk about this album title? Easily up there with the best named records of all time, thankfully this is matched in the quality of the music itself. All-British blues rock 'n' roll at its grittiest and funkiest, and most musically impressive. A showcase of exquisite guitar and piano work, and songwriting, marks the debut of Chicken Shack, the group founded by Stan Webb, Andy Silvester, and Alan Morley, who also enlisted Christine Perfect, later Fleetwood Mac's Christine McVie. Comprising ten predominantly rather short tracks (most are around three minutes), this format only leaves us wanting more as the record plays out. There's the classic heartbroken ode 'Lonesome Whistle Blues', the fraught six string solos of 'See See Baby', and the rowdy bar-in-a-track that is 'San Ho Zay' to get you started, but really everything on here is gold.

Review: Australian alternative rock band The Church put out their sixth studio album in 1990. It's best known for the breakout rock hit 'Metropolis' and performed commercially well overall after the successes of 1988 hit album Starfish, Gold Afternoon Fix . An interesting nugget for fact fans is that this album is their first of the band's not to feature a 12 string guitar as Marty Wilson-Piper's instrument got stolen on a previous tour. The subtle change in sound didn't derail the band and they continued to pick up more and more fans for their lilting grooves and lyrical subjects such as love, loss and plenty in between. The band were induced into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2010.

Review: ** REPRESS ALERT ** For the uninitiated: Billy Cobham is a Panamanian-American jazz drummer, composer and bandleader. He is also the brother of multi instrumentalist Wayne Cobham. He was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 1987 and the Classic Drummer Hall of Fame in 2013. Produced with the legendary Jan Hammer (a former bandmate) and engineer Ken Scott in 1973, Spectrum was Cobham's first solo album after leaving his previous group Mahavishnu Orchestra. The album was heavily influenced by the music of Miles Davis, with whom Cobham had previously collaborated extensively. A seminal album of the jazz fusion scene. A Swiss resident since 1980s, Cobham now lives in Schoepfen, a canton near Bern.

Review: Nazareth, Buffalo, Uriah Heap, Genesis, Black Sabbath, China, Razorlight, Chase & Status, Metallica - the list of huge names that have recorded for, and released on, Vertigo is very long, very established and unarguably impressive. But it all started with this rather trippy adventure into the then-unchartered landscape of a nascent, acid-hued rock & roll scene. Valentyne Suite is, if borrowed memory serves, a wonderful summary of just how fertile and explorative guitar music had become by 1969. At times it's cacophonous, in other moments almost ritualistic in its hypnotising layers and movements. The vocals are gruff, riffs wailing, but the overall feeling is one of lucidity and evolution. You can almost see the loose white clothing flailing in your mind's eye. A forgotten classic from a time when it was, apparently, pretty easy for things to be forgotten.

Recorded in Hollywood; New Orleans, Dublin and London, the album finds Costello in typically incisive lyrical mood, opposing capital punishment on 'Let Him Dangle' and expressing a desire to live long enough to witness the death of Margaret Thatcher on the legendary 'Tramp The Dirt Down'.

Review: It's 1993 and everything is different from today. But one thing that has remained constant between then and now is the sublime work presented on this, the second studio album from English troupe Cranes. Stopping well short of becoming overblown, while confident enough to break through the restraints that can often make music like this feel inauthentic, the Portsmouth-formed outfit hit the nail on the head when it came to the emerging dream pop scene at the time this was released. Then they flipped expectations on their head. So while numbers like 'Cloudless' and 'Far Away' effortlessly create opiate atmospheres, making listeners feel like they're cruising into the stratosphere, not a care in the world, there's plenty to drag you back down to the grit and grime of Earth, too. 'Clear', 'Sun & Sky' and 'Adrift' all take us to places close to garage rock, only with added density and an air of the cinematic.

Review: The late Gabi Delgado fronted the Dusseldorf duo DAF (Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft), and in his honour, this reissue of their experimental sixth album 1st Step To Heaven comes courtesy of Music On Vinyl. Janky and fairlight-hued, as was the case with much of 80s dance music, the music pines after sex like an object to be pursued in and of itself. "You make me want to have sex" goes the refrain of opener 'Voulez Vous Coucher Avec Moi', while 'Sex Up' continues the charge with a dubby, Balearic remix, continuing the mantra throughout the album. A fantastic look back on a weird and provocative duo.

Review: Some 30 years after it was recorded, Das EFX's acclaimed (and long out-of-print) second album, Straight Up Sewaside, finally returns to vinyl. This is undoubtedly a good thing, because many rap connoisseurs consider it to be influential duo's most impressive full-length. It's certainly an early '90s East Coast classic; a "golden-era" gem which saw the pair slow down their previously high-octane, stream of consciousness rap style and strut their stuff over brilliant beats that bear all the hallmarks of executive producer PMD (he of the Hit Squad and EPMD fame). For those of a certain age, it's a highly evocative album, while younger hip-hop heads will marvel at the quality of the brilliant blend of boom-bap, hardcore hip-hop and sample-heavy New York brilliance.

Review: 1977's Quiet Nights is one of legendary American jazz figure Mile Davis' lesser known albums. It's not Bitches Brew or Kind of Blue, but it is a delightfully easy to listen work, with references taken from Brazilian folk on 'Prenda Minha' which actually gets renamed 'Song #2' here, or Spanish classical on 'Adelita' which was written by the pioneering Francisco Tarrega and is here called 'Song #1' .There are also some woozy ballads and standout big band jam 'Summer Night.' Review: Shanty Town was the debut album by the legends in the making of the reggae world that are Desmond Dekker and his Aces aka Wilson James and Easton Barrington Howard. It's an album that shows how ska from the mid-60s had an influence on the rocksteady sound and as well as the 'Spanky Town' classic you'll hear gems like 'Israelites' from 1968 and 'It Miek' from 1969.

Review: Krush's eighth - and last - album Jaku is up there with Endtroducing and Donuts in terms of seminal, influential and forward-thinking beat longer players. 10 years since its release and it still sounds as timeless, unique and exciting as it did in 2004. The slick licks of a young Mr Lif on "Nosferatu", the post-apocalyptic tension of "Univearth" the sludgy, swampy cosmic hip-hop of the Aesop Rock-featured "Kill Switch" and the unashamed sax sex of "Slit Of Cloud"..... Review: By this point in time Dog Eat Dog had already said a fair bit. Throwing the Warrant EP at the world in 1993, marking the arrival of a hybrid music tour de force among the alternative and skate rock and punk community. Play Games was the band's second full length album, and while it perhaps didn't boast the kind of anthem 'No Fronts' became two years earlier, it still very much represented an act setting out their stall and winning. Albeit perhaps not in terms of chart impact.
Then again, that was never really the Dog Eat Dog way. This, after all, was one of the first outfits - in the US at least - to try and marry hardcore punk with hip hop, welding two distinctly counter-cultural but (at the time) disparate genres together. And for the most part they succeeded. This is one of those parts.

Review: When Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon came out at the box office, it went some way to confirming we'd entered a new millennium, and a fresh era in cinema. Visually spectacular, despite being made on a small budget for epics even back then ($17million), the stunning tale of warring Chinese dynasties, told through battle scenes disguised as beautiful, entrancingly choreographed performance art, was an aesthetic landmark, and a more thoughtful take on the wuxia martial arts action canon. Picking up Golden Globes and Academy Awards, Tan Dun's soundtrack certainly contributes a lot to just how amazing the overall experience of watching CTHD is. Although losing out on its own nomination to the equally powerful Gladiator score - what a year it was for historic fanfares - the combination of Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai National Orchestra, and Shanghai Percussion Ensemble makes for a classical masterpiece, from the drummiest war marches to the most serene, cherry blossom-hued harmonies.

Review: The first and still cult classic jazz album Eastern Rebellion from the eponymous band was released in 1976. It is a frantic and classic set of free-form jazz from the group that consists of Cedar Walton on piano, Bob Berg on tenor-sax, Sam Jones on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. The four pieces that make up this album were all penned by Walton and cover plenty of ground from hard bop to straight jazz.

Review: The Fall's Mark E. Smith was having a rather torrid time even by his own standards when the band made The Marshall Suite in 1999. He was fresh back from a US tour on which he had been fighting with fellow band members on stage and was later arrested after carrying on the shenanigans back at the hotel. The album itself builds on the techno sounds The Fall had explored on the preceding album Levitate but also with something of a return to the rockabilly-influenced sound from earlier Fall line-ups. Cuts like 'The Crying Marshal' are as strange and complex as they come with thumping jungle drums powering it along.

Review: The Fall apparently weren't thrilled with Rough Trade focusing so many resources on the Smiths, not least as it meant the full length video they wanted to make to accompany this, their sixth studio album, would not be possible, while the other band got the money to make one. Mark E Smith and company's response was to produce their own, and in many ways the 52-minute Perverted By Language Bis, directed by multifaceted French enigma Claude Bessy, remains one of the archetypal pieces of Fall iconography. The music isn't bad on its own, either, opening on the relentlessly catchy 'Eat Y'self Fitter', once described as "endlessly cycling rockabilly chug with extra keyboard oddities and sudden music-less exchanges for the chorus." 'Neighbourhood of Infinity' then picks up the pace, and grit, and we're soon in deep. A record that impresses musically and in terms of forward thinking production (see: 'Garden') without sacrificing the grass roots energy of post punk at the time.

Review: British heavy metal outfit Fastway was of course put together in 1982 by 'Fast' Eddie Clarke. He is best known for his work as a guitarist with Motorhead but this band's debut album - originally released in 1983 - was also a hit with fans old and new. Its biggest moments are the singles 'We Become One' and 'Easy Livin', but the title track - which oddly was never actually put out as an official single, managed to become the band's most successful hit. This 40th-anniversary version is one of 1000 individually numbered copies on red vinyl.

Review: It's pretty hard these days to keep up with all the different new Spider-Man movies, but you should try because somehow they all seem to be pretty good despite it being such a well-worn character. The music, too, always manages to reach new levels as did this, the original soundtrack for the 2017 version, Spider-Man: Homecoming, by Michael Giacchino. It is full of dramatic and wide-screen orchestration, sweeping strings and rousing musical adventure but also the more quiet moments of reflection and tenderness. This version comes with a poster in a deluxe sleeve on blue vinyl.

Review: The Music on Vinyl label has linked up with Sony Music and Alex Callier in order to put out four different remix EPs this year. Each one tackles a different album by Belgian band Hooverphonic with A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular, Blue Wonder Power Milk, The Magnificent Tree and Presents Jackie Cane all being reworked. Callier selected the remixes and they have all been cut to 180g 45rpms. The often thought of as a trip hop group, the outfit went on to do so much more and mixed up rock, downtempo, alternative electronica and pop. These first four remixes are all sultry late night jams for close listening and cosy atmospheres.

The A-side highlight is undoubtedly DJ Pulse's terrifically spacey drum & bass revision of '2Wicky', though the heavy trip-hop psychedelia of the 'Not So Extended Hoovering' version is also surprisingly good. Review: Within a few moments of a famous film score - or at least one that made an impact on you - scenes and even lines not heard in years come flooding back. And the recollections of the atmosphere in the cinema as the opening credits began. When James Cameron's blockbuster Titanic first hit big screens it was a very different time for movies, and theatres, one that seems remarkably simple compared with today's multi-platform, pre-release buy-in chaos. Simply put, the flick was seen by pretty much everyone, which is rarely the case now, and as such the typically emotive soundtrack, particularly the orchestral sections, will have made an impact on everyone of and over a certain age. First returning us to the glamour and wonder of that ill-fated ship, then the drama and desperation that defined its demise, and the death of an all-too-short love, listening now makes it clear how crucial the tunes and songs were. From the unbridled joy of 'An Irish Party in Third Class', to the somber reflection of 'Nearer My God To Thee', it's the stuff of epics.

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes sits at the more pomp and ceremony-filled end of things, epic classical overtures that invoke a sense of adventure, overcoming adversity, mild peril and inner strength. Even when heard without the visual accompaniment of the film itself you can't get away from those feelings, making for a rousing and compelling listening experience.

It starts in 1978 when a New York producer was in need of some studio musicians to lay down some fast and funky rhythms for a band he was working with, The Imperials. Minneapolis talents Andre Cymone and Prince Rogers Nelson duly stepped up and recorded 'Fast Freddy The Roller Disco King'. An album from the Imperials was set to follow but it never did, leaving us with this one majestic cut. It's soul-drenched and cosmic disco with a killer vocal back with a more leggy and slow-motion cosmic wonder, 'I Just Wanna Be Your Lovin' Man.'

Review: Andrew McMahon from pop punk band Something Corporate found great success with his side project, Jack's Mannequin. Ten band pout out their last album in 2011 and it featured some high profile guests including Jamie Muhoberac, Chris Chaney from Jane's Addiction, and Patrick Warren. Rob Cavallo (who has worked with bands like Green Day and Linkin Park and Jim Scott (The Rolling Stones, Red Hot Chili Peppers) both worked as co-producers on the album, which his a real pop rock classic with plenty of big, singalong tunes and epic air guitar ruffs. The songwriting was well praised at time of release and resonates to this day.

This collection has all the big, stadium-sized tunes as well as the more quiet moments of introspective calm. It's a great reminder of a band that had a big impact at the turn of the millennium.
