Review: This is the first reissue of the much-anticipated compilation gathering together many gems from the Louisiana born singer Bettye Swann. This compilation gathers and enormous 22 tracks from the career to highlight her career. Bettye rose to to acclaim with her 1967 soul classic 'Make Me Yours' which not only climbed to #21 on the Billboard 100 but also became a #1 on the rhythm and blues charts. Once she signed to Capital record a few years later, she had a second top 40 hit with 'Don't Touch Me'. The compilation has so many underrated songs from her career that just didn't get the attention that they deserved - see the excellent 'Don't You Ever Get Tired (Of Hurting Me)' and the amazing cover of 'Tell it like it is'. There is so much great music here to discover. This reissue by Music On Vinyl is on 180 gram vinyl complete with insert.

Review: Following on from 1989's majorly successful and admittedly more commercial sounding fourth full-length Intuition, Trondheim glam metal-tinged hard rock heroes TNT would find themselves on the radar and eventual roster of Atlantic Records, who in 1992, would distribute the band's fifth album and first on the major label, Realized Fantasies. Praised by fans for its exceptional production with ludicrously bombastic percussion the whole way through, the project saw a sonic retracing of their more hardened edges, so as not to lose sight of their creative prowess. That being said, cuts such as the cheerful 'Easy Street' and epic ballad 'Lionheart' seem like they were purposefully designed to keep snooting record label execs off their proverbial backs. Review: Formed in the early 60s and initally recorded at the now world-famous Studio One studios in Jamaica, Heptones are most famous for bridging the genres ska and rocksteady.. In 1971 they left to work with Lee 'Scratch' Perry and found international success with re-recording and or updating many of their tracks again. Cool Rasta was their first new recording for the legendary Trojan Records in 1976, an album that has all the hallmarks of early ska - see 'Do Good To Everyone'. Elsewhere, 'Dreadlock' is a great example of their rootsier side, and the the album is not short on political, conscious messages either with tracks like 'Black On Black' and 'Suffering So'. Review: A great choice by Music On Vinyl - whom at this point have proven their mettle at sating the desires of almost any type of past music enjoyer - Chapterhouse's 'Whirlpool' is the debut studio album by the English shoegaze band, and thoroughly deserves this case of retrospection. In just nine tracks, the quartet of Andrew Sheriff, Stephen Patman, Simon Rowe and Ashley Bates established a hugely maximal sound, stylistically nailing the form by pairing its vacuuming vocal washes with more propulsive, hard-limited mixes and masters, informed by industrial and dance music most notably. Contemporaries of similarly tersely-named bands like Lush, Moose, Ride and Curve, Chapterhouse were indeed the most multi-syllabic, not to mention least restrained band out at the time; standouts 'Pearl', 'Autosleeper' and 'Falling Down' nailed the explosion of '90s indie ferment and the overflow of emotions that came with the decade.

Part of the new wave of British heavy metal, even the most famous bands in the category - Metallica, Megadeth, etc. - acknowledge Diamond Head as among the few pioneers to popularise the sound after a long nascence, not to mention their creditors. Review: Cuckoo was their second full length from Curve - Toni Halliday on vocals and guitar with Dean Garcia - and saw its release in 1993. This album was heavier, focused and featured stronger, more aggressive rhythms that evolved from their first album. Heavily influenced by bombastic urban and electronic beats but favouring shoegaze effects on the guitars, making for a unique combination that made Cuckoo stand out from the rest, ultimately predating similar sounds from bands like Garbage. This album holds key tracks like the amazing 'Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus' as well as the singles 'Missing Link' and 'Super Blaster'. The effects of Curve are still being felt today by those who discover them and fans of the producer Flood should definitely be aware of this album if they are not already. Reissued by Demon over a decade ago on CD, a vinyl repress is long since overdue and now the beautiful people over at Music On Vinyl have opted to re-distribute the underrated seasoned gem on translucent blue vinyl with the 180 gram numbered audiophile treatment. Review: To the delight of the 80s synth-pop faithful holding on to the decade prior, Martin Fry revived ABC in 1997 after a five-year hiatus. It's noticeable that Fry wasn't interested in repeating old tricks though, as he took the band in a new direction alongside Heaven 17's Glenn Gregory without losing that keen sense of songwriting magic that made ABC so popular the first time around. Loaded with emotionally charged reflections on life, the universe and everything, this is a welcome pressing on blue and white marble vinyl which is limited to 1000 copies.

Review: It could have all been so different when Death In Vegas first formed. Richard Fearless and Steve Hellier spawned the project in 1994 and got signed under the name Dead Elvis, but legal wrangling got in the way and they used the name for their debut album instead. Now Music On Vinyl have repressed the 1997 classic so we can revel in the grizzled take on big beat and trip hop the pair cooked up. It's very much of its time, but there's a snarl to the production which sets Death In Vegas apart from their peers at the time, opting for the dive bar ambience over the festival main stage you'd hear when playing The Chemical Brothers or Leftfield. For that reason Dead Elvis has aged very well indeed.

Review: Desmond Dekker recorded some of his best known songs together with his backing group the Aces. Their single '007 (Shanty Town)' made him Jamaican music's first outernational superstar, reaching the 14th place in the UK charts. The Leslie Kong-produced Double Dekker was first issued in 1973 and consists of the best material Desmond recorded during his early years. In 1969 he scored a number-one hit with the legendary song Israelites. You'll hear how the Ska music from the mid-60s developed to the Rocksteady sound. This was 'Ska' or 'Blue Beat' - (or its new name for the slower tempo rocksteady) - and the lyrics come from the Calypso-Mento method of telling about current events in music. He was really at his prime from 1969 to 1971 and recorded classics such as 'It Mek' (1969) and 'You Can Get It If You Really Want' (1970), which you'll both find on this record. Even before Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff Jamaica already had their own international superstar, Desmond Dekker was his name.

Review: It's surprisingly not that common for a director to pick music for their movie. There are accomplished experts at scouring and sourcing the most powerful and moving tunes for cinema, and, of course, composers who have established themselves as maestros of silver screen scores. Luca Guadagnino is an exception to the rule, then, with his coming-of-age drama, Call Me By Your Name, soundtracked via his choices. And what choices they are. The film itself is beautiful and incredibly moving, adjectives which also apply to the accompanying sounds. Review: Before we even get to the music, shall we talk about this album title? Easily up there with the best named records of all time, thankfully this is matched in the quality of the music itself. All-British blues rock 'n' roll at its grittiest and funkiest, and most musically impressive. A showcase of exquisite guitar and piano work, and songwriting, marks the debut of Chicken Shack, the group founded by Stan Webb, Andy Silvester, and Alan Morley, who also enlisted Christine Perfect, later Fleetwood Mac's Christine McVie. Comprising ten predominantly rather short tracks (most are around three minutes), this format only leaves us wanting more as the record plays out. There's the classic heartbroken ode 'Lonesome Whistle Blues', the fraught six string solos of 'See See Baby', and the rowdy bar-in-a-track that is 'San Ho Zay' to get you started, but really everything on here is gold.

Review: On Air is the second solo release by Alan Parsons, following the split of The Alan Parsons Project. One of the creative forces behind this album was APP long-time guitarist Ian Bairnson; the concept of the album revolves around the history of airborne exploration. The theme of 'Too Close to the Sun' is escaping the labyrinth of the Minotaur; 'Brother Up in Heaven' is an emotionally driven song, about the unfortunate death of Ian Bairnson's cousin; 'One Day to Fly' is a song about Leonardo da Vinci's search to design a flying machine. A who's-who of lead vocalists are featured on the album, be they Christopher Cross, Eric Stewart, Neil Lockwood, Steve Overland or Graham Dye. Although On Air might be the most underrated Alan Parsons albums, many consider this as one of his best albums - it now comes back around as a limited edition reissue of 1500 individually numbered copies on translucent red coloured vinyl, housed in a gatefold sleeve and including an insert with lyrics and pictures.

Review: American jazz fusion outfits don't come much more venerated than Weather Report. Fronted by leader Joe Zawinul, the ensemble evolved subtly throughout their career and it was in 1974 that they dropped this album, Sweetnighter. It proved to be a little more funky and influenced by the emerging t&b of the day than its predecessors and it is also noted for being the last long player the band cut with original bassist Miroslav Vitous, as well as being the band's first album to make it into the Top 100 in the US charts of the day. It sodas as good now as ever on this nice heavyweight vinyl pressing.

Review: When Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon came out at the box office, it went some way to confirming we'd entered a new millennium, and a fresh era in cinema. Visually spectacular, despite being made on a small budget for epics even back then ($17million), the stunning tale of warring Chinese dynasties, told through battle scenes disguised as beautiful, entrancingly choreographed performance art, was an aesthetic landmark, and a more thoughtful take on the wuxia martial arts action canon. Picking up Golden Globes and Academy Awards, Tan Dun's soundtrack certainly contributes a lot to just how amazing the overall experience of watching CTHD is. Although losing out on its own nomination to the equally powerful Gladiator score - what a year it was for historic fanfares - the combination of Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai National Orchestra, and Shanghai Percussion Ensemble makes for a classical masterpiece, from the drummiest war marches to the most serene, cherry blossom-hued harmonies.

Review: It's hard not to fall for the version of 'Stayin' Alive' featured on the Dominic Lewis-scored and curated soundtrack to Bullet Train - the 2022 David Leitch movie that unfolds on one of Japan's world-famous, super speedy, and appropriately nicknamed 'bullet trains'. The composer made some smart decisions pulling the choices together, opting to focus largely on East Asian pop and rock, with some bold inclusions. One of which is the aforementioned opener. In so far as overuse goes, The Bee Gees' seminal disco anthem is up there with the greatest, and that makes it difficult to find something new to enjoy in it. Drafting Avu-chan, of Japanese 'fashion punks' Queen Bee achieved the unthinkable, then, and sets the tone for a number of excellent covers by Japanese artists (Bonnie Tyler's 'Holding Out For A Hero' by Miki Asakura, 'Kill Me Pretty' by Tamio Okuda of Unicorn), alongside an impressive set of originals from Ryuichi Sakamoto, Carmen Maki, and more.

Review: The Fall apparently weren't thrilled with Rough Trade focusing so many resources on the Smiths, not least as it meant the full length video they wanted to make to accompany this, their sixth studio album, would not be possible, while the other band got the money to make one. Mark E Smith and company's response was to produce their own, and in many ways the 52-minute Perverted By Language Bis, directed by multifaceted French enigma Claude Bessy, remains one of the archetypal pieces of Fall iconography. The music isn't bad on its own, either, opening on the relentlessly catchy 'Eat Y'self Fitter', once described as "endlessly cycling rockabilly chug with extra keyboard oddities and sudden music-less exchanges for the chorus." 'Neighbourhood of Infinity' then picks up the pace, and grit, and we're soon in deep. A record that impresses musically and in terms of forward thinking production (see: 'Garden') without sacrificing the grass roots energy of post punk at the time.

Review: The Zodiac's Cosmic Sounds is an album from November 1967 that very much reinvented the psychedelic rock blueprint. The basic idea for it was one by Elektra Records head honcho Jac Holzman who was inspired by the commercial success of the debut album from The Doors which was released on his label. He enlisted some top people to get involved with the record from composer Mort Garson to lyrics written by Jacques Wilson via produciton from Alex Hassilev of The Limeliters. Lots of spaced out Moog sounds define the record and some interspersed folk poems add another edge entirely.
