Review: Emotional Rescue turn their attention to Rare Silk and their sublime cult classic "Storm". It's one of those rare tracks with a wonderful otherworldly quality that manages to be smooth and accessible, and somehow not like anything you've ever heard before. It must be somewhere in the mix, between the dreamy harmonized vocals, lush instrumentation and curious sense of space. The original on the A side is a treat enough, but then throw in a mercurial dubbed out version by Arp on the flip and you've got yourself a 12 inch portal to a most delightful dimension.

Review: Last year, the Expansions label kicked off a wonderfully intriguing 10" series featuring classics from soul music's rich canon complemented by contemporary cover versions and so far it's seen Blue Note troupe Quasimode tee off against Johnny Hammond and Bembe Segue challenge Norman Connors. A third edition duly arrives and hints Expansions are really enjoying the creative challenge the concept allows them with the jazz funk classic "Zaius" from Eddie Russ joined by a cover from the celebrated UK funk veterans Incognito. Originally appearing on the 1976 LP See The Light, "Zaius" is a blinding example of why Russ is described a master of the keyboard and it's complemented well by Incognito's B Side cover which appears on vinyl for the first time. Review: Emotional Rescue looks to the newly rebuilt but still very much culturally separate East and West Germany of the 1980s with this new EP. It's dub reggae through a post-punk and alternative lens by Hanover artists Felix Holter aka Dubvisionist. All these cuts have a very live, improvised feel because father way he worked from rhythms first and jammed endlessly before adding the vocals. They are taken from their 1987 release 10 Tracks Of Reggae & Dub Music which was inspired by the great Adrian Sherwood label On-U Sound label, and you can hear that clearly.

Boygenius clearly know this given their track record for naming things. 2023 saw the trio - Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, and Lucy Dacus - drop their debut album, The Record, and now, a few months down the line, we have The Rest: an EP made up of the other bits that didn't quite make said LP.

Review: After many years turning out 12"s, Klasse Wrecks has decided to serve up a first-ever 10" and they give the honour to Mr. Ho. His '000 Baby' is a delightfully widescreen sound - a post-rave mix of comedown electronics, dusty breakbeats and soothing ambient pads with some smart vocal samples drifting like wispy clouds. On the flipside, we're treated to and OM Unit remix that beefs things up and speeds up the drums. The percussion too is more defined and the energy levels ramped up with deft 808 bass and searching acidic leads. A nice yin to the A-side's yang.

Review: The Det 313 label is kicking off the new year with a bang and dropping a pair of brilliant new EPs on the same day in late January. This one is a reissue of the esteemed Gary Martin's 'Pimping People In High Places' on 10". It's the Woodword Ave alternative mix that kicks off and is a rough and ready percussive techno looper with hefty basslines underlapping and propping up the floor. 'The Medusa Touch' is a more wily and synth laced-late night jaunt with mystic energy and acid details that make it a deep and dramatic cut with real dynamism.

Review: The House Of Love was the name of both a British indie band and that of their debut album. Notably part of the C86 scene in the late 1980s - a catch-all term to describe a wave of bands at the time making jangly indie with a distinctive power-pop song structure, and which was sadly maligned after a dismissal by massively influential radio DJ John Peel - the band's sound fit well into the category and is a suitable precursor for an undeniably British sound which still resounds today, whether exemplified by its lead track 'Christine' or follow-ups 'Shine On' or 'Destroy The Heart'. The reissue is pressed on vinyl for the first time since 1989.

Review: James Pennington remains one of the cult veterans of Detroit's techno legacy, right there at the beginning and wholly revered by those across his work. Even if he still exists a little on the fringes compared to some of his peers, releases like this remind you how respected he is, and for good reason. 'Winds Of Fear' just hits that balance between the true, deep-rooted, classic kind of techno and the otherness which makes the best of the genre memorable instead of forgettable. The trombone-like synth line forming the melodic bedrock of the track is just not something you hear often in techno, but it sounds powerful especially on top of the rough, urgent slap of the Suburban Knight drums. As if the original wasn't enough, we get Robert Hood going in on the track with a tight but funky as hell edit and a dusty beatdown version from Eddie Fowlkes. Legends, assemble!

The latest in its cultured Edits series finds a brace of new hot takes from Dave Mathmos. First, he offers a Contemporary Soul remix of 'Your Love' and it is the sort of heart-warning sound that brings impossible fee good energy to a park. On the flip he offers an interpretation of 'You Abandoned Me' that has a fleshy and gurgling bassline topped with aching soul vocal hooks and lush, late-night piano chords. Gorgeous stuff.

Review: Expansion's focus right now is on reissuing classic tracks alongside a newer version of it. They are all coming on tidy 10" eco vinyl in mad limited numbers and next up is Norman Connors and Bembe Segue. Connors dropped his superb 'Mother of the Future' in 1975 and it is a mad jazz dancer with layer upon layer of Afro drumming, loose percussion and expressive vocal ad-libs. Flip it over and we're taken to 2008's live version of the same tune by Bembe Segue. It's a little less intense but no less busy, with silky jazz grooves and new vocals layering in some future soul.

On this top-notch ten-inch single - his first for NOUN - he's in full on techno mode, puffing out his chest and striding confidently towards peak-time dancefloors. The legendary Dutch producer first offers up 'Infinite Voyage', a slamming, warehouse-ready workout that wraps buzzing, mutant electronic lead lines and star-fall around stomping beats and booming bass. Review: This hand-stamped white label 12" from the Pulp Corn crew is the 10th such offering and still, they are cooking up irresistible house fusions that do plenty of good things. 'Track 1' here takes a classic vocal sample from the Pulp Fiction movie and layers it into a freewheeling disco house sound that is cosmic, funky and retro-future by design. After that loopy workout comes the more freewheeling broken beats and Latin-inspired sounds of 'Track 2' which again has a classic movie sample as the centrepiece while the drums evolve all around. Playful and fun for sure.

Review: Bernard Cumberbatch - presumably no relation to actor Benedict - and Garnett Cross are Aquizi, the dub duo fromed in the early 80s and Aiwa label mainstays. Their most notable 12" - aside from maybe 1981's 'Merry Christmas' was 'Kunte Kinte' earlier in the same year. It is a bit of a collector's fav that has more than held its value over the ensuing 40+ years. Driven by lazy dub swagger and carefree keys, it's a lovers rock outing peppered with toms and hits and plenty of echoing depths. Flip it over for version if you want something that will boggle the brain more with its endless mixing board effects.

Review: We'd be hard pushed to think of any labels out there right now that are doing a better job of serving up deliciously deep and detailed dub techno than Echo LTD. For this one, the in house crew takes care of a pair of sublime new sounds that take you to the ocean floor and keep you there. 'Echo From The Outer World' opens with gently echoing chords pacing about the mix over a rolling and rubbery low end with shards of light beaming down from above as if the sun has just shone through some clouds. 'Minimalism In Dub' takes things back even further with more liquid rhythms and smooth drum rotations. So good.

Review: As the name of the label well represents, Rasta Vibez out of Holland brings, well, rasta vibes to jungle sounds. The eponymous production outfit steps up here with more highly potent bangers designed surely for the beefiest sound systems to turn up loud and proud this summer. 'Greetings' is both energetic but fun, with wild ragga vocals unfolding at hyper-speed over the tough metal breaks. Flip over this rather nice transparent green 10" and you'll find 'Bam Bam The Alarm' complete with rinsing drum loops, naughty synth explosions and more ragga vocals that will blow up any spot.

Review: Two of drum & bass' most rabid underdogs, Nookie and DJ Crystl, the latter returning only recently after a two decade hiatus - make a triumphant return to the foreground, joining Suburban Architecture in aid of the third edition of their Architecture Dubs series. A fresh fusion of old and new motifs, Nookie's remix of 'Renegade Horns' pays homage to a select juncture in the genre's evolution, recalling the era of "intelligent" drum & bass while nonetheless playing into the freshness and cleanliness that could only ever have surfaced after the 2010s. Crystl's version of 'New Horizons', meanwhile, is more refractive and dreamy, taking its required time to bask in its artisanal padwork, in contrast to its raw b-boy sample and frank Amen breaks.

Review: This new and unique one-sided 10" is a companion to the PMA EP by B-2DEP'T released on this Saisei label earlier in the year. It's as raw and frazzled as electro gets frankly, with B-2DEP'T heading off to the depths of the galaxy where snappy snares ride on crispy drum breaks. There are occult-like synth lines weaving their way in and out and a dark filtered vocal bring the menace and paranoid energy that keeps this one so enthralling. It's the second vital offering from this artist this year.

Review: Bristol jungle lynchpin Dead Man's Chest is usually found steering the good ship Western Lore, but back in 2017 he did a series of drops for Ingredients billed as Trilogy Dubs. Originally available on the label's Bandcamp site, now the first volume is pressed up on 10" for some deck-based air time. 'Tears (Fantazia Version)' on the A-side leads with a sad-eyed r&b sample and some lingering piano, but when the drop comes its pure Reese power with a slant towards d&b rather than the jungle DMC's more commonly associated with. 'Rinsa' on the flip is a rowdy slice of Mentasm trickery - the perfect counterpoint to the lead track's solemn vibe.

Review: Daniel Avery's heartfelt tribute to the late, great Andrew Weatherall, the melancholic masterpiece that is 'Lone Swordsmen', was one of the standout tracks on his most recent album, the critically acclaimed Ultra Truth. Here the track returns in remixed form, with Throbbing Gristle's Chris Carter putting his spin on Avery's bittersweet, late-90s style IDM gem. Carter's version is a touch warmer and more percussively up-beat, with Avery's lilting lead lines, poignant melodies and glistening electronic motifs rising above a slipped breakbeat and moody bass. It's an excellent remix all told, and a fine example of how to rework on already excellent track to enhance its key features.

Review: Suburban Architecture is a project from Chris Read and James Curry which seeks to explore the expressive potential of drum & bass as a vessel for soulful musicality and rolling pressure alike. Carrying the torch from atmospheric d&b and the approachable tones of the Hospital Records crew, their latest 10" finds them turning to veritable legends for remixes which cement the angle they're exploring. Blame is up first, reworking 'Visions '96' in his own mould of melancholy, heart-rending composition strapped to the crispest of beats. 'Future Jazz '95' finds DJ Trace taking up the mantle and serving another masterclass in mellow, introspective d&b as pliable for the dancefloor as it is suited to home-listening reveries.

Review: Back in 2005 we might not have predicted what a phenomenon Ghost Box would become. In the years since, the label has become a beacon for the hauntological exploration of Britain's inherent oddness creeping just below the surface. Julian House's graphic design is a huge part of the label's artistic merit, and it figures his music as The Focus Group follows a similarly aesthetically rigorous direction. There's a pastoral collage quality to Hey Let Loose Your Love which takes you right back to the 70s, with beautiful musical passages offset by surrealist samples and unexpected diversions into the recent history of these wyrd isles.

Review: Fresh from his mind-melting album Terraform on Yuku late last year, Tenebre returns to his heavier breakbeat roots with this killer dancefloor dispatch on WNCL. Going in hard on the breaks both 'Half Stab' and 'Full Stab' go all-in with no compromises. Both armed with big distorted, bruising basslines, the former is characterised by dubby echoes and shattering breaks while the latter eases up on so many of the bouncing bass hits lets the breaks do more of the talking.

Review: Jurgen Paape has a brilliantly characterful sound and wrote one of our favourite silly records in 'Ofterschwang' some 13 years ago (go check it out, it's brilliant.) We're glad to hear some new music from the long time Kompakt legend and co-founder and once again it's not what you would expect. 'Allein' is a downbeat piece with oriental melodies and gently plucked strings over warm bass. It's not for the club, that is for sure, but the flip side version 'Allein In Italien' sure is. This one is a chugging and brit Italo disco number with retro 80s synth sounds and plenty of joyous grooves.

Review: Hoavi (Kirill Vasin) lends his services to Ghost Zvuk to deliver a disordered series of IDM 'Phases', which are intentionally numbered incorrectly throughout the record, as if to suggest something got broken in transit. That being said, these are remarkable textural explorations for the synaptic and deep-thinking listener; 'Phase 10' is an incessant repeat ricochet, sounding like the internal workings of a plasmic ball bouncing around inside a supernatural lead pipe; 'Phase 5' is more beat-driven, with pressurised pink noise bursts sounding to escape the alloyed confines of a ritual dubbing chamber.

Review: Get yourself poolside for a much-needed repress of this 2021 gem from Lips & Rhythm cool crew Bad Kids Beach Club. It's a poolside fever dream with one eye on the Balearics and the other on the astral plane, as Jesse Sizmo and Seb Hall unfurl a veritable barge of plush synths on your downtempo-hungry ears. '45 Degrees' is indeed a sizzler, while 'Del Arrecife' takes a more sultry, late night approach to the executive lounge. Review: It's hard to refer to Cocoon without calling it 'mighty' because the now 20+ year old label run by Sven Vath is one of European techno's most prominent. It is synonymous with colourful parties all over the world but still does a great job of serving up fresh sounds too. Two mainstays combine for this one with Defekt and Extrawelt cooking up 'Cell Sync' which is dark and menacing, with rigid drum loops and menacing synths. 'In The Space Of' has more molten synth modulations layered up to a ghoulish effect over slamming drums. It's peak time stuff, for sure.

Review: When he's not busy exploring the minutiae of electronic frequencies as Alva Noto, Carsten Nicolai likes to amuse himself with experiments like this one, where he sent magnetic tape and photographic film out to various parts of the world addressed to Mr Nemo from 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, hoping for the packages to be returned to him. The idea was these magnetic tapes and photosensitive films would pick be exposed to electromagnetic waves and radiation during their respective journeys, and so when he received his parcels back, he digitised the results and made this album, presented as a gatefold 10" with an eight-page booklet.

Review: Jamaican Recordings take a trip back to Tappa Zukie's classic dub cut 'Natty Princess Dub', which they put out on a 10", some 20 years ago. Zukie's primary career was through the late 70s and early 80s, with his name on a huge swathe of singles, dubplates and specials through the years after he arrived in the UK in 1973. 'Natty Princess Dub' is a standout cut from that era, stripped down to a skeletal core of drums and bass for a proper dubwise ride, and 'Rock You Rock' and 'Dub Hypocrites' on the flip are just as serious for any selector.

Review: Felt may not have made the longest lasting impact on the common conscious, but nevertheless the UK indie set struck a real chord, and are still widely seen as cult icons among those who know. As part of the deserved celebrations for equally revered label Cherry Red's 45th anniversary, we can now dive into one of the band's finest moments, with this double-A 45" single. Opening on 'Primitive Painters' it doesn't take long to realise where we are on the sonic scale. Cocteau Twins' Elizabeth Fraser in a duet with frontman Lawrence, it's rightly considered one of the great British singles of the 1980s and one of the decade's most powerful collaborations, saturated in shoegaze and dream pop while still being resolutely part of a New Wave. Meanwhile, 'Penelope Tree' on the flip opts for a janglier but no less epic feeling.

Review: Randy's Vintage Dub Selection originally came up as a collection of dub versions of classic reggae cuts from the legendary Randy's Studio 17 in Kingston, Jamaica. The likes of King Tubby, Errol Thompson, Lee Perry, you name it, all recorded there, making it a veritable treasure-trove of dub history. Now comes a new 7" paying tribute to the Studio via the Randy's-adjacent Gary Hall-run label - Jamaican Recordings. The A-side here is a rare dub cut to 'Natty Dread Ah No Mickey Mouse', which was itself a cut to 'Natty Dread Won't Get A Witness', over the classic Bangarang rhythm. Meanwhile, the B spans two versions: 'Dub Feeling', recorded in 1969 and a dub of Slim Smith's 'This Feeling', and 'It's A Dubbing Lie', which reworks Ernest Wilson's 'It's No Lie', also from the very same year.

Review: Greyscale unveils its latest endeavour, the Spectrum Series, as a way to continue to evolve its offerings and this time it is with something that makes a vibrant departure from its traditional black-and-white aesthetic. The inaugural release features the iconic Lithuanian dub track 'Kasdienybes Sventykla' by grad_u & Eazystyle MC as a way of commemorating its 15th anniversary. It came as a double CD in 2011 but now gets a first vinyl pressing on a nice 10" slab of wax. The track itself taps into the earliest roots of dub in the 70s and traces a line through the 80s with its heavyweight drums and endlessly echoing bass topped by great mic work. Review: Aussie duo Echo Inspectors join forces with yet two more cretive forces of nature, Subset and Prince Morella, to deliver 'Youthman' - in the artist and label's words - a "slung dubbed out, rootz laiden steppa". The dub influence rings as clear as a translucent glass bell that's just been peeled off the blowpipe; the track's vocalist, Morella, has already worked with Lee Perry, King Tubby and Scientist, so this is certainly a collaboration for those willing to follow the threads of dub as a lineage into dub techno. The original is slow and pacey enough - with Morella singing of broken barriers and Babylons - but it's the organic-atmos remix from Biodub that really takes the cake for us, with its daring additions of swing and future garage influences.
