Toriton EP

Deep House
Toriton (WPH version) (9:07)
Lalalalaland (7:33)
Review: Although Satoshi Fumi has been releasing music since the dawn of the millennium, we're not sure he's ever made a better record than this first EP for We Play House. For proof, check A-side "Toriton", a fresh version of a 2016 cut that brilliantly joins the dots between 1990s Japanese deep house don Mr YT, British intelligent techno and the far-sighted sci-fi techno of fellow Tokyo resident Ken Ishii. If that wasn't enough to set the pulse racing, B-side "Lalalalaland", a Balearic-minded, piano-heavy dance through saucer-eyed dream house territory with added sunrise-friendly synthesizers, is arguably even better. In other words, you need this record in your life.

A Festa (6:29)
Review: The meandering and eccentric press release sent out to promote this release describes newcomer Serious A as: "a charming Parisian astronaut with a charming signature sound". It's a fitting description on a number of counts. Although rooted in smouldering late night deep house of the kind that French producers do so well, many of the electronic sounds and percussion elements showcased across the EP are more readily associated with original Detroit techno. We're particularly enjoying the yearning, early morning shuffle of "Dune 2" and gentle bleep techno influences of the chunkier "Aftermath", though jazzy and bumpy closer "A Festa" is also inspired.

Snacks - "Order To The Senses" (Kornel Kovacs remix) (6:49)
Review: Stockholm's Kornel Kovacs has been a staple of Axel Boman's esteemed local imprint Studio Barnhus for a few years now. The 31 year old Hungarian-Swede is appearing now for the always reliable Mule Musiq diffusion imprint: Endless Flight. There's "Szamar" which is a looped up, pop-inflected disco-house cut that further portrays Kovacs' happy go lucky and tongue in cheek sensibilities: it's downright infectious! On the flip, the good times continue on the emotive deep house jam "Order To The Senses" which is actually a remix by Kovacs of a track by Snacks: the New Zealand/German duo of Rene Corbett & Aljoscha Babel. The original of this particular track appeared on last year's Mule Musiq label compilation entitled I'm Starting To Feel Okay Volume 7, which also featured the likes of Eddie C, Prins Thomas, Lord Of The Isles and Frankey & Sandrino.

Number 13 (6:35)
Review: After the widespread acclaim for "Shoulders Back" and "July V", Leif fires up his 10" TIO Series with another pair of dazzling, future-minded cuts for the more inquisitive dancefloor. Increasingly he's been moving away from house and techno conventions towards intriguing broken beat variations, and that's apparent in abundance on this new release. "Bluebird" rides on a set of tough but dynamic drum ripples, but the stand-out element is the gorgeous twinkling arpeggio that pirouettes over the top of the beat. "Number 13" meanwhile takes a moodier, dubbier approach without losing that deft programming, harmonic warmth and crafty rhythmic interplay that has become Leif's calling card in recent times.

Them & Us (5:55)
Peasant Dance (5:52)
Review: Detroit/Houston based Kolour have had some pretty credible names feature on their new 10 inch series this year, such as Eddic C, Napoleon, Frank Booker and Lady Blacktronika. Now it is over to the Belarus based disco DJ Funkyjaws who serves up two irresistible jams on Vol 8 of the series. On the A side, we have the soulful and life affirming African boogie of "Them & Us". We have not heard the original but it sounds pretty seamless to us: a respectful edit indeed. On the flip, we have one seriously mad boogie-down jam in the form of "Peasant Dance" which is a truly exotic affair from god knows where! Accordions, wah-wah guitar and some super string arrangements clash wonderfully. This may sound like an unholy mixture but this is exactly the kind of disco deviance that truly floats our boat! The Grodno based producer last appeared for the label on Kolour LTD 22 a couple of years back, and in the meantime has also appeared for the likes of Shadeleaf Music and Austrian imprint Pusic.

"FML" gets a little butch with its sprightly disco insistency and those brilliantly loose toms that roll on every fill. "DHFC" meanwhile gives us a peep through the Rea view mirror as we hit the road with vibrant, loopy charm. Loaded with a cheeky German break for added party lols, it brings another ace Schenkelspreizer year to a close in a style. Merry hitmas everyone!

Salik - "Inna Brixton" (5:51)
DJ Sotofett - "Acid Site Mix" (6:27)
Review: DJ Sotofett's Wania imprint closes a wild and entertaining 2017 off with a pair of masterful EPs, both of them showcasing the Norwegian's genre-crossing tastes and outlook. First up is this steely 10", spear-headed by newcomer Salik, out of London Town. Up until now, the imprint has predominantly focussed on the US styles of dance music, a rough and ever-quirky blend of house and techno, but Salik's "Inna Brixton" verges on much more UK-centric territories with its near six minute spew of moody energy, clicking and bouncing steadily to the sound of deep, treacherous sub bass. The flipside features DJ SO-PHAT himself, coming through with a beatless away of acid-tinged melodies that blend into a tight little rhythm, before dissipating into a loose pool of drones and bass - Sotofett at his most outlandish. An essential buy.

Review: Last time out Kieron Ifill AKA K15 was sharing vinyl space with legendary British techno producer Mr G. This time round, he's back on a solo mission, laying down three deep and expansive tracks for the mighty Eglo Records. Opener "Sunbeams" is undoubtedly a slab of hazy summer sunshine, with Ifill encasing a jaunty samba groove in lilting Rhodes riffs and Kaidi Tatham style synthesizer solos. The influence of Tatham's Herbie Hancock-inspired approach can also be heard on the intergalactic jazz-funk positivity of "Sunbeams 3", while "Essencia" is deliciously woozy and glassy eyed, with yearning melodies and analogue synthesizer chords rising above skittish jazz drums.

I Can Prove It (5:58)
Free Love (6:50)
Review: Chevals, who brilliantly describes himself as a "French house producer, disco cutter and horse", came to our attention last year via a fine debut on Better Listen. You'll find further proof of his "rising star" status on this tasty, two-track contribution to Kolour LTD's 10-inch series. Both tracks are essentially re-edits, though there are enough additional touches and new musical elements to elevate them way beyond your average scalpel re-arrangement. The Frenchman kicks thing off with "I Can Prove It", a gently tooled-up and reworked version of a soaring, glassy-eyed disco-soul gem that will sound fantastic at this summer's open-air events. Flipside "Free Love" is an altogether more low-slung affair, with a fizzing, funk-fuelled groove building towards a rush-inducing Philadelphia Soul-goes-disco-house conclusion.

Reach For Love (5:14)
You've Got Me (5:16)
Review: This is Adam Wickens' - aka ADMIN - first appearance for Kolour LTD, and we're happy to see the UK deep house producer continuing his steady path to maturity. This two-tracker is part of the label's 'LTD 10s' series, and this particular one is the fourth instalment; we love it not only for the quality that has graced the releases up till now, but also because we're fools for the ten inch format. "Reach For Love" sounds like it could be on Moodymann's Mahogani, a sensual house charmer complete with gorgeous piano keys and assembled with pure hypnotic delight. Side B's "You've Got Me" is similarly cool and laid-back, but the beat is speedier here, the percussion more floor-centric and the vocals sexier than ever. What a gorgeous little tip - cop it!

Review: Firecracker sub label Unthank is back with Whodamammy aka Raffaele Arcella, an Italian DJ and producer based in Naples. He's related to the collective Early Sounds Recordings (with local hero Massimo Di Lena) and is one of the founders of Periodica Records. The music on offer on the Prima Industria EP is is a fusion between cosmic sounds, proto house, jazz funk and electronica. After the sublime intro that is "Iris Primum" get gets straight down to business on the oddball acid of "Indigo Auctoritas" and a couple of short experimental pieces which make for curious listening. But it's all about the B side in our opinion, where the intergalactic space funk of "Wise Glaciem" made a nice impression, as did the rather Hieroglyphic Being sounding analogue soul of "Neuter Gyrum".

For the Luxury Water Jewels EP, new X-Kalay sub label Silver Lake is presenting this as part of their intention to provide a platform for music on a more ambient/leftfield tip. Review: Starting a solo venture alongside his work running the UntilMyHeartStops label, Leif kicks off the new 10" Tio Series with two stunning tracks that once again demonstrate his unstoppable progression in the field of broken beats. "July V" is a true head-spinner, using dazzling arpeggios and fractious drums to create a wondrous crystalline slice of leftfield rhythm science. "Shoulders Back" on the flip is a completely different concern, but no less astounding in its use of cyclical, percussive melodies to create a hypnotic, and truly distinctive workout. At a time when more and more producers are moving away from traditional 4/4 rhythms, Leif's particular style is as natural and inspiring as it gets.

Review: New Franklin Theory: A shadowy new name with subtle clues from the label that we are likely to already know the identity behind the beats. Dare you unravel the mystery at such an early stage or should you simply enjoy the grooves for what they are? Either way the music speaks for itself; "Overhill Road Variation #1" taps deep into the roots with Chicago charm. Chunky, loopy and lean elements comprise to create an almost overwhelming groove. "Variation #2" meanwhile shakes with more of a foggier Claussel-style mysticism with more organic percussion, softer bass and guitar textures that could almost be highlife. The theory continues...

Please Him (7:01)
Review: Italian artist Paul Santangelo has been having fun messing with the sometimes po-faced traditions of the house music scene through a raft of home made productions on SoundCloud, but now with his Venetian Causeway label he's able to prove the clout to be found in his music. On this 10" the arch title "Generic House Traxx" actually does a disservice to the quality of the music contained within - Santangelo does a fine job of whipping up monosynth bass and ethereal pads astride an uptempo beat that, while familiar, has an atmosphere with considerable depth to it. "Please Him" on the B side goes further out on a mellow electro tip, plaintive leads and aqueous chords flirting with 808-style beats.

There's absolutely no guesswork when it comes to this series of wicked 10" releases; they've been pretty good so far. On the A side is some smooth and jazzy groove that samples Alfonso's old digger's delight "This Is Underground" and indeed it is pretty sweet. Starting out with the deeply uplifting soulfulness of "Never Gonna Leave You 2K16" they are then into "Losing Memory" on the flip which gets more reduced, dubby and emotive, giving a nod to the kind of loopy deepness as heard on labels like Office or Slices Of Life. Review: Hot on the heels of his debut 12" for Clone Royal Oak - the jaunty, swinging deep house shuffler that is "Valentine's Groove" - KiNK returns to the Dutch imprint. It sees label mainstays Serge and Alden Tyrell join forces to deliver a scorching rework of the previously unheard "Beats". As you might expect from the basement-loving duo, it packs a serious punch, thanks in no small part to their surging drum machine rhythms and expert use of build-and-release arrangement. The experienced pair are masters of creating and retaining energy, and their percussion sounds are always as jacking as they come. In other words, it's another club slammer.

Review: Ad Bourke and Rotla are Italy's answer to Floating Points and the rest of the nu-school, nu-jazz crew. The two Roman beat soldiers are a constant presence on our radars, always keeping things fresh and in flux. They land head-high on the young and vibrant Really Swing label with these naughty three cuts, spread across two sides of 10" wax - our favourite format. "Ostia 1982" makes reference to Rome's decadent riviera and the italo-disco movement, where its 4/4 disco licks dominate the A-side with pride and mystique. "Traffic Jam" is a wonky boogie chiller with liquid-like electro bass tones, and "Foresta" heads down the jazzy pastures that these two usually like to indulge in; the tune is a magnificent excursion into a deep and chimerical world of percussion and ethereal sonics. Bliss.

It is sombre and emotive deepness on offer here with dusty and smoky elements supported by glacial pads on the A side. On the flip things get a bit more hectic such as on the wild acid techno thump of "Bass Raw Bass (Monsieur Cedric Rave mix)" which is reminiscent of early nineties UK rave vibes but the Steve Frisco remix of "Fruity Mango" is an angular and disjointed remake with broken, rusty drum patterns soon getting a hip-hop groove happening behind its messy but captivating collage of samples.

Here, the born-again imprint takes a new approach, releasing the first of three split 10" singles, showcasing a track apiece from a variety of artists. "The Tie With The Most Stripes" provides an excellent opening, with the duo exploring their shared love of instrumental hip-hop, Luke Vibert and sparkling dancefloor electronics. "Aoe Atmos" isn't exactly steady around the edges, but it certainly gets out juicer flowing - a grainy, distorted beat groove scatters percussion all over the place amid a minimal cascade of melodies and bleeps. The Chicago-based producer was on a productive roll through 2015, both solo and alongside Hakim Murphy in Innerspace Halflife, but now he breaks his silence with a sturdy two-tracker for Finale Sessions. As you would expect, gritty machine jams are the order of the day, but there's plenty of soul and mystery sprinkled atop the box beats to make for spellbinding results. Both "Tangerines" and "Tungsten" lurk in the lower registers of the tempo range, but there's a weight behind these productions that makes it far from mere warm-up fodder.

Here the Dutch label dips into his vaults again and unearths another gem from the late 1990s. "Hard to Love" is every bit as warm, rich and loved-up as you'd expect, with Floyd providing a yearning, soul-fired vocal to accompany his rich Windy City grooves and cascading synthesizer melodies. On the flip you'll find a fabulous instrumental version that closely mirrors the vocal take. That it stands up on its own without the headline vocal is testament to Floyd's impeccable composition and production skills.

So You'd Better Think (7:14)
Loving You (6:43)
Review: Ashley Stevenson, who usually goes by the alias Arthur Jnr, made his vinyl debut under his recently launched project The Last Trip To Gandahar on Leicester's City Fly last year (which he co-founded) and a great one on new Washington DC imprint Better Listen. Now he continues his Stateside swing for Detroit/Houston based Kolour LTD for the sixth edition of their limited 10" series. On the A side we've got the deep and emotive retro house jam "So You'd Better Think" which is reminiscent of early Larry Heard while on the flip we've got a sweet and summery disco-edit made to perfection on "Loving You".

Vincent Inc & Danijel Kevic - "Space"
Lola Allen - "Afrofusion Jazz"
Review: Minuendo calls upon Vincent Inc and Danijel Kevic to kick off their latest single, and they do so in fine style with the luxurious sweeping chords of "Space". Twinkling pianos, speech samples and a carefully measured set of deep house drums make this the consummate slice of pool-side dance music for those who can still find some sun at this time of year. Lola Allen steps up to the B side with something a little more sassy in the shape of "Afrofusion Jazz". As the title might suggest, there's a mixture of influences tumbling into this track, most notably with some wildly filtered jazz organ and funk licks stewing in the pot, and just when you think it's going to break it swerves off into submerged Moodymann territory. This is unpredictable house music at its finest.

Honey Rider (5:30)
Mr Scaramanga (5:41)
Review: When he's not busy in the studio or touring the world with his running mate Hans (Junktion) as Fouk, Daniel Leseman takes time for his own solo projects and Detroit/Houston's Kolour are pleased to release two vintage Daniel Leseman groovers on a piece of 10" vinyl for the seventh stop in their Kolour LTD series. On the A side "Honey Rider" sees the Dutch producer serve up a deep and slinky house cut, on the soulful and filtered tip. Some sexy synth work and boogie down vibes in full effect here. On the flip, we have got the low slung/slo-mo house of "Mr Scaramanga" which really brings the P-funk style to the max, accompanied by some dusty disco drums and spacey vibes for sexy times on the dancefloor.

Jesse - "Pohja" (DJ Sotofett mix) (6:52)
LNS & DJ Sotofett - "Soft Peak Mix" (8:55)
Review: The latest missive from Sex Tags' eccentric Wania offshoot is a multi-artist affair, though as usual co-owner DJ Sotofett is in the thick of the action. On the A-side, the long-serving Norwegian producer offers up his interpretation of "Pohj", a killer cut from Finnish electro sorts Jesse. Sotofett's version is loose, dubby and loved-up, with the graf-loving DJ/producer re-casting the track into a meandering chunk of deep dancefloor hypnotism. While impressive and undoubtedly club-ready, we actually prefer the flipside ambient house bliss of Sotofett's latest hook-up with Freakout Cult artist LNS (AKA Laura Sparrow), "Soft Peak Mix". Built around sparkling, watery electronics and a relentless melody line that bobs and weaves throughout, it's a saucer-eyed chunk of horizontal brilliance.

Track 1 (6:30)
Track 2 (6:42)
Review: The mysterious Crue returns with two body-twisting floor-burners for the peak-time hours. Thumping drums and old-skool chords are the main ingredients here, with the A-Side bringing some ruthless bass kicks into action alongside smooth but seductively off-kilter keys - not forgetting those ringing 90s vocals to wrap everything up nicely into a Head High reminiscent power bomb. Over on the flip, similarly ferocious bass drums pounce heavily against a wall of nostalgic but euphoric female vocals. All we know about these slabs of wax is that they originate from Spain and, oh, they come in lovely transparent marbled vinyl. A definite tip.

Track 1 (6:04)
Track 2 (6:23)
Review: With two releases already under their belt, the quintessential anonymous producer Crue is back with another exercise in dynamic analogue house and techno. "Track 1" is a steady 90s house workout, rich with warm chord stabs and a punchy beat, primed for slotting in amongst other garage shuffle revivalists. "Track 2" is where things get spicy with the primal, Detroit-weighted clatter of the drums falling in an almost-breakbeat, and the melodic stabs zipping in overhead. It's a staggeringly fresh sounding track, even whilst using methods of the past. Whoever they might be, Crue is clearly in command of some serious kit and a keen ear for what works,

Review: Miltiadis Merentitis is one of the greatest exponents of the underground Greek scene. After several releases on Nous, Echovolt and Synapsis he joins Jose Rico's Spanish imprint Freebeat with the Epitome Of Things EP. Miltiades explores the driest of territories through his characteristic chords, kicks and percussion which will transport you to another world. Take the first cut on the A side for instance: a deep hypnotic techno cut that creates perfect trance induction by relying on the most basic of analogue elements. On the flip, the second track is a gothic lo-fi house jam reminiscent of New York City's Patricia while the final offering channels the spirit of early '90's Detroit on this fine serving of hi-tech soul.

Major Fun (For Joshi)
Your Love Away (For Lucky) (with Jules Etienne)
Review: Frankfurt's Live At Robert Johnson dole out a swift accoutrement to Massimiliano's excellent LP With One Another in the shape of this sublime two track 10". By our reckoning the label's first issue in this format, Major Fun comes with dedications to two friends of the Berlin-dwelling Italian. "Major Fun" is dedicated to a friend called Joshua who has sadly passed and it's vibrant, colourful explosion of sound and rhythm suggests Pagliara wants to celebrate his life. On the flip the hushed vocals of Jules Etienne adds an extra element of restraint to the deep, disco flecked house cut "Your Love Away" which is dedicated to Pagliara's close friend Lucky.

Heal (8:29)
Plight (8:27)
Review: From his appearances on Aesthetic Audio and Ornate through to his own Atmospheric Existence label, Miles Sagnia continues to be one of the best kept secrets of British deep techno, and that's no more apparent than on this stunning release for Common Dreams. There's a looped up insistence to "Heal", but it's offset by emotive movement in the synth lines and an overall spiritual quality that escapes much cyclical techno. "Plight" takes a slightly slower path, amping up the early UK electronica tones for an immersive experience shaped out by interlocking rhythms and snaking melodies. It's a truly classy statement that stays true to techno while saying something original.

No Return To The Jive
Homeless
Review: Scott Young's most powerful and personal (he was actually homeless at the time of recording the title track in Berlin) effort to date. No return to the Jive disintegrates a familiar groove into digital detritus, burning down the house (genre) in the process. Homeless' disco dub is mutant and sticky, and already a hit at the best kitchen after parties. Hobo Art by Capablanca & Young. Weirdo magick.

Also renowned for his musical offerings as Black Jazz Consortium, the New York-bred, Berlin-based producer is accredited with over 100 releases, all instantly recognisable given their warmth, depth and modesty. It is a typical cut for The Rockers with muffled kick drums and a lo-fi vibe overlaid with disco claps and muted melodies that bring the soul. On the flipside is 'If Time Where A Beat' which was previously only on the Ladomat Compilation, Compact Disc Volume 2. Monile - "Quin" (7:32)

Review: Aline Umber is a new alias of Aline Brooklyn, hailing from the New York area's hottest tech house hub. Monile, meanwhile, is a Spanish artist whose past cuts never failed to dazzle for imprints such as Chez Doc. Together, the pair present a dazzling dialectic of straight tunage. 'Quin' is a cheeky and insidious minimal number, with filtrated and toothy basslines and reversed sound effects ensuring a moody groove. 'Short Message Service', meanwhile, is a danceably telecommunicative vision of the retrofuture - phone bleeps, 80s tropes, and a 4x4 undertow.

Review: The smooth and seductive sounds of Pulp Corn come at us for another fine EP here from the in house production team. As ever the influences are broad with 'Tarik 1' featuring a soul vocal and some swooning strings that bring an almost Eagles-style vibe to the rolling house drums and elastic bass. It's a good time sound for winning over any crowd in loved-up settings. On the flip, 'Track 2' is led by a sax taking on an iconic melody from the 'Sunny' tune and allowing it to drift of bustling and bristling funky house beats. Two characterful cuts with lots to like.

The first one is as smooth as you like - a perfectly frictionless tech house cut with balmy cosmic pads, a muted but funky bassline and soft chords that do a gentle dance up top. The second cut is another backed in solar rays - a silky groove for cruising along to early in the night, locking you in, filling you with excitement for what's to come as the super piano chords and bouncy drums perfectly intertwine to exude a lovely air of West Coast cool.
