Linkwood Family - "Miles Away" (8:19)
Fudge Fingas - "Gettin' Togetha" (3:41)
Linkwood - "Fate" (3:19)
Review: Repress of the already legendary 1st Firecracker EP, 'Miles Away' by Linkwood Family. Nearly 3 years since its first exclusive
appearance in London's Vinyl Junkies, this elusive record (only 500 were pressed) has picked up a huge cult following including
Derrick May, Moodymann, Theo Parrish, DJ Spinna, Danny Krivit, Osunlade, Mike Clark, and many more. The record holds 3 killer
Detroit influenced soul grooves, once again, these tracks come lovingly packaged (using only lithographic printing processes) with
this official re-issue being pressed on 180g heavyweight vinyl. Tip!

Review: Bless the Firecracker gods for their ongoing series of essential represses! The latest is their tremendous Firecracker 4 EP, originally released in 2009 and perhaps one of the Edinburgh label's definitive records - just look at all those DJs that have charted it above! Present is the absolutely epic, Dennis Parker-sampling "Barely Eagle" by Linkwood & House Of Traps on the A side plus Linkwood appearing again on the B side with his crafty edit of Tabou Combo Superstars 1979 classic "Ooh La La". Not forgetting Fudge Fingas "Situation Diminished" either; a nice, deep and smoky excursion through soulful blues territory. Not to be missed the second time around!

Ce N'est Pas Bon (JD Twitch edit) (5:20)
Review: Long term advocates of JD Twitch's selecting skills will be very happy to see the appearance of this 10" featuring the Optimo man's edit of Amadou & Mariam. Originally made back in 2008, this edit has been a staple of JD Twitch sets and was intended to be released as part of the third volume of the superb charity focused Autonomous Africa series that was issued earlier this year. Licensing issues put the kibosh on those plans, but with the edit having belatedly been granted permission Twitch elected to issue it as one off 10" instead of waiting for volume 4 in 2015. As with the best edits, Twitch's amendments to the original version of "Ce N'est Pas Bon" are subtle and understated, adding little rhythmic elements that make it easier to slip into a DJ set and hypnotise minds. All proceeds will once again go to the Mtandika mission in Tanzania.

Baseline 87' (6:46)
Musik For The Dancefloor (6:24)
Review: The Sushitech festivities continue unabated with this bittersweet repress of an all-time classic from the much-missed Detroit figurehead Mike Huckaby. 'Baseline '87' ranks amongst his most fabled works, riding as it does around an irresistibly catchy square wave bass hook and one of those no-nonsense beats that the legendary producer did so well. For the sound of Huckaby in full flight though, 'Musik For The Dancefloor' on the flip soars thanks to the interplay between the pads and chords while retaining that steadfast focus. In memory of a true dance music hero, why not revisit a classic that should be comfortably sat in every record bag?

Track 1 (6:04)
Track 2 (6:23)
Review: With two releases already under their belt, the quintessential anonymous producer Crue is back with another exercise in dynamic analogue house and techno. "Track 1" is a steady 90s house workout, rich with warm chord stabs and a punchy beat, primed for slotting in amongst other garage shuffle revivalists. "Track 2" is where things get spicy with the primal, Detroit-weighted clatter of the drums falling in an almost-breakbeat, and the melodic stabs zipping in overhead. It's a staggeringly fresh sounding track, even whilst using methods of the past. Whoever they might be, Crue is clearly in command of some serious kit and a keen ear for what works,

Review: The mysterious Crue have been putting out solid house whites for the past four years, and still we're waiting to know who's behind this enigmatic little project. What YOU need to know, however, is that a tune like "Crue A" doesn't come around too often, and its warm, dubby glow fits in ever so will with the scorching waves of disco at its core. The flipside, "Crue B", jingles and dangles its 70s wings in similar fashion, this time spear-headed by a bumpier, more explosive groove. Choice cuts!

Love That (Burns Hot Enough)
Ma Body
Review: Waze & Odyssey are dealing in a lean kind of old-skool flavoured house music which has made its way onto Southern Fried and Wolf Music in 2012. Launching their own imprint to put out their cool and deadly deep house, "Love That (Burns Hot Enough)" kicks things off with a straight-up pumper full of DX7 bassline vibes and light and summery piano chords. It's a simple trick finished off with a snappy diva vocal hook. "Ma Body" is a marginally moodier affair, focusing more on the rhythm section and keeping excessive elements held back until a Casio keyboard line comes in, shredding everything down to pure bliss.

A Tender Place
Nose Candy
Heroin
Review: Even if you weren't privy to the news that Firecracker had launched an offshoot, your immediate thought when grasping this inaugural release on Unthank would be that it had something to do with the Edinburgh imprint. Arriving in bespoke purple hand stamped sleeve art pressed on 10 inches of clear vinyl and wrapped in Japanese style plastic, it's one of this year's most attractive propositions for vinyl obsessives. This is all without even approaching the music, a debut peek into the musical mind of newcomer Bakey USTL, an Amsterdam dwelling Estonian producer. In "A Tender Place" Bakey has delivered one of the most disjointed, flagrantly risque, thumping eight minutes of house music your senses might be exposed to this year. In contrast to the sleaze on the A Side, the opposing proceedings open with the shuffling future soul abstractions of "Nose Candy" minimalist beatdown at it's finest, whilst "Heroin" marks a swift descent into the depths of South American narcotic noise. Thus the schizoid brilliance of the A Side is matched by the slightly menacing strangeness of the opposing side on a record which is limited in numbers and high on demand.

Jacob B - "Basement Crowd"
Liam Geddes - "Somebody In The House"
Cecil - "BV"
Review: 124Black is the new sub label from 124 Recordings with the aim of promoting a darker, harder sound firmly rooted in the underground. All releases are strictly limited and available only on 10" transparent vinyl. First up is Jacob B, rapidly gaining a lot of recognition for his deep and chunky club cuts, aptly demonstrated on "Basement Crowd" with solid drums, suspense filled strings, a spoken word vocal and a bassline that shows you exactly where the title of this track comes from. Next is another 124 family member, Liam Geddes' late night jam, "Somebody In The House". With it's haunting stabs, groovy baseline and snare rolls, this a simple, yet very effective track that works equally as well in a small club or large warehouse! On the B-side, Cecil returns to 124 with "BV" a track very much aimed at the dancefloor and replete with the producer's signature deep stabs and chords, that work alongside a sub bassline that you feel rather than hear. A peak time track that has been doing the business this summer.

Review: The mysterious Crue returns with two body-twisting floor-burners for the peak-time hours. Thumping drums and old-skool chords are the main ingredients here, with the A-Side bringing some ruthless bass kicks into action alongside smooth but seductively off-kilter keys - not forgetting those ringing 90s vocals to wrap everything up nicely into a Head High reminiscent power bomb. Over on the flip, similarly ferocious bass drums pounce heavily against a wall of nostalgic but euphoric female vocals. All we know about these slabs of wax is that they originate from Spain and, oh, they come in lovely transparent marbled vinyl. A definite tip.

Review: Leipzig's finest M Ono and Luveless are back on Houston via Detroit's Kolour with volume three of their new limited 10" series. Starting out with the deeply uplifting soulfulness of "Never Gonna Leave You 2K16" they are then into "Losing Memory" on the flip which gets more reduced, dubby and emotive, giving a nod to the kind of loopy deepness as heard on labels like Office or Slices Of Life. Review: Sushitech continue to celebrate the depth and breadth of their catalogue with another 15th anniversary reissue in the form of this surefooted two-tracker from Delano Smith and Norm Talley. This is the sweet spot where Detroit house and Detroit techno intertwine, leading in with the dreamy haze and steady trucking groove of 'Constellation'. 'Detroit 2-Step' has a spicier demeanour which artfully merges sultry sax with an ear-snagging riff which sounds organic and metallic all at once. Again, the groove is locked down and impossible to shake off course, making this heady club tackle for those who want to season their set with some of the finest rollers in the game.

This first release pairs two bonafide legends in the shape of Fred P and Kai Alce, both known for their incredibly accomplished takes on house. Mass X
Review: Right, you know the drill. New Firecracker 10". Sumptuous artwork? Check. Killer music? Checkity check. Gavin Sutherland aka Fudge Fingas is the man behind the seventh instalment in the cult series, with A-Side cut "What Works" showing a move away from the soulful strains of his recent long player for Prime Numbers and towards moody, shuffling Detroit house. It seems fitting that remix duties are handed to Vakula - it was Firecracker after all who first showcased the Ukrainian producer's sounds to a wider audience - and despite his prolific form in recent times, his appearance here still feels very special indeed. Unsurprisingly, he turns in a memorable, highly atmospheric remix of "What Works", before another Fudge original, the chiming sea of calm that is "Mass X", rounds off an essential release.

Review: Fresh from delving into his ambient side on the pastorally-enhanced "Loom Dream" album for Whities, Leif revives his self-manned Tio Series with another double-shot of delicate but impactful cuts outside the conventional slipstream of modern techno. The rhythms fall crooked, the synths trickle, bubble and cascade around the groove and the atmosphere remains humid and heady, especially on ear-snagging B-side "Rumex". "Montpelier" sports more explicit dubby flourishes and a spread of sonic flora and fauna in the middle distance that truly brings the track to life.

Please Him (7:01)
Review: Italian artist Paul Santangelo has been having fun messing with the sometimes po-faced traditions of the house music scene through a raft of home made productions on SoundCloud, but now with his Venetian Causeway label he's able to prove the clout to be found in his music. On this 10" the arch title "Generic House Traxx" actually does a disservice to the quality of the music contained within - Santangelo does a fine job of whipping up monosynth bass and ethereal pads astride an uptempo beat that, while familiar, has an atmosphere with considerable depth to it. "Please Him" on the B side goes further out on a mellow electro tip, plaintive leads and aqueous chords flirting with 808-style beats.

Review: "Flylove" is a prominent highlight of Lovelife Is A Challenge, the digital only LP Oakland singer songwriter Chris Turner released last year; produced in conjunction with Phantom Lover, the track came off like Fly Lo dipping his toes in jazz and deep house at the same time. Rebirth have licensed the album for a remastered full vinyl release and "Flylove" makes for perfect single material and look the label have only gone and commissioned the master of Detroit Dust Andres to remix the track. The results are dipped in the same kind of tape worn warmth that characterised his ubiquitous New For U plate last year and is already a firm favourite of Gilles and MCDE.

Reach For Love (5:14)

Review: This is Adam Wickens' - aka ADMIN - first appearance for Kolour LTD, and we're happy to see the UK deep house producer continuing his steady path to maturity. This two-tracker is part of the label's 'LTD 10s' series, and this particular one is the fourth instalment; we love it not only for the quality that has graced the releases up till now, but also because we're fools for the ten inch format. "Reach For Love" sounds like it could be on Moodymann's Mahogani, a sensual house charmer complete with gorgeous piano keys and assembled with pure hypnotic delight. Side B's "You've Got Me" is similarly cool and laid-back, but the beat is speedier here, the percussion more floor-centric and the vocals sexier than ever. What a gorgeous little tip - cop it!

Review: Italojohnson has clearly decided that less is more, having limited their output to one self-released 12" a year since 2013. Volume 10 in the mysterious threesome's self-titled series predictably contains more twisted, tried-and-tested material. The untitled A-side sounds like a modern update of a breakbeat-boasting Frankie Bones classic, with hectic bursts of percussion, surging sub and a classic riff taking it in turns to impress. There's more of an acid house feel to the similarly untitled flipside workout, with booming, mangled vocal snippets and sharp electronic stabs riding a thunderous groove, '80s electro hits and a classic Chicago bassline. There's little subtle about either track, but they sound like guaranteed floorfillers.

Vincent Inc & Danijel Kevic - "Space"
Lola Allen - "Afrofusion Jazz"
Review: Minuendo calls upon Vincent Inc and Danijel Kevic to kick off their latest single, and they do so in fine style with the luxurious sweeping chords of "Space". Twinkling pianos, speech samples and a carefully measured set of deep house drums make this the consummate slice of pool-side dance music for those who can still find some sun at this time of year. Lola Allen steps up to the B side with something a little more sassy in the shape of "Afrofusion Jazz". As the title might suggest, there's a mixture of influences tumbling into this track, most notably with some wildly filtered jazz organ and funk licks stewing in the pot, and just when you think it's going to break it swerves off into submerged Moodymann territory. This is unpredictable house music at its finest.

Review: Jus Ed gets another slew of like-minded deep house heads together for the latest double-pack venture from Underground Quality. Samuel Andre Madison dominates the first disc with his Rev S moniker serving up a thoroughly bumpy jam anchored by an almighty kick on "This Thing", while he appears on 2400 Operator's more shuffling but equally mellow "NWS PT 1". Ed himself takes care of disc two with the smacking "beats" cut of "Let's Groove", which features some walloping drums off-set by tasty filtered synths in that plain and simple Jus Ed style. The "Medley" mix on the other hand features a bizarre reprisal of "I'm Coming" amongst other elements over the same "Let's Groove" track. Highly recommended.

Review: Bruno E has plenty of history in the field of future jazz and downtempo, and now he's been snapped up by D3 to deliver some of that cold-chilling lounge business with some interesting remixers on board. Pat Van Dyke is up first, creating a blissful version of "Ventos De Outono" that feels as cosy as a warm fire and a glass of whisky on an autumn evening. The original version of the track is actually a peppier affair with a broken beat lilt that wouldn't sound out of place alongside the Dego and Kaidi Tatham crew. Kirk Degiorgio is a natural fit for another remix given his jazzy roots, and his swirling techno treatment is the perfection lotion to pour over Bruno E's excellent original ingredients.

This time the cascading, Latin rhythm and frenetic horn leads of "Rising" are given the midas dancefloor touch by none other than Ron Trent. Review: **REPRESS** The Jack Fell Down duo made a considerable splash last year with releases on Southern Fried and Hometaping Is Killing Music and now they resurface in style with the Another Way EP. The second offering from new Sccucci Manucci offshoot, Manucci's Mistress, this 10" operation is a good home for the Jack Fell Down sound. Lead track "Road To Nowhere" displays a pensive melodic restraint that many of the new crop of house producers seem to overlook in their excitement to get productions from Ableton to Soundcloud. If the A Side sounds like Jack Fell Down holding back, then "Brothers & Sisters" could potentially have them sectioned, such is the crazed madness of the screaming vocals that intermittently punctuate the 90s rave stabs. Great fun.

Phazzled (Ike Release produced)
Review: After Hakim Murphy and Ike Release inaugurated the Innerspace Halflife project earlier this year with a sublime debut on the former's Machining Dreams imprint - they now grace Aroy Dee's ever excellent MOS Deep label with a further enthralling journey. Even if the aforementioned Cosmology EP passed you by, you should be familiar enough with the respective solo endeavours of both producers to be suitably excited by "Wind". You won't be disappointed either, with the track unfurling from its icy origins into a monstrous arrangement dominated by the fluctuating acid bassline and razor sharp hi-hats, while the soaring chords that intermittently spread expansively over proceedings add brief moments of Utopian calm amid the relentless jacking pressure. This is complemented by a solo Ike Release cut in the shape of "Phazzled" which adopts a more atmospheric tone as ever present clouds of analogue fx add a hazy sensation to the strident drum programming and woozy chord arrangements - quite aptly described by MOS Deep as "classicist house with a future perspective".

Lead track "Pressure Box" is the track with a sense of unpredictable funk, giving us juicy chords, starry-eyed pads and an overall nice atmosphere with the drums moving ever forward. The B-side "Azikiwe" fuses sporadic arpeggiations with some very thoughtful chord melodies. Maybe it could be described as having a more psychedelic twist. Another fine house record from the Common Dreams team.

Nearing 200,000 plays on the former's SoundCloud there's every chance you do, and if you don't, well you've more than likely, unknowingly, swung your hips to the jarring bassline of that club hit. Three years on, it's still a production partnership that is going strong through their irregular Sunklo transmissions, which have latterly been replaced with an ongoing series of single sided 10" releases. After the pair unleashed "Tricky's Team" last year, the latest 10" from Joy Orbika (as no one calls them) is "TMTT", a colourful fusion of arpeggiated synths, spaced out beats, thickset chords and a bassline that sounds like something from the dancing broom scene of Disney's Fantasia.

Review: It's been a while since we heard something fresh from Ike Release. The Chicago-based producer was on a productive roll through 2015, both solo and alongside Hakim Murphy in Innerspace Halflife, but now he breaks his silence with a sturdy two-tracker for Finale Sessions. As you would expect, gritty machine jams are the order of the day, but there's plenty of soul and mystery sprinkled atop the box beats to make for spellbinding results. Both "Tangerines" and "Tungsten" lurk in the lower registers of the tempo range, but there's a weight behind these productions that makes it far from mere warm-up fodder.

No Return To The Jive
Homeless
Review: Scott Young's most powerful and personal (he was actually homeless at the time of recording the title track in Berlin) effort to date. No return to the Jive disintegrates a familiar groove into digital detritus, burning down the house (genre) in the process. Homeless' disco dub is mutant and sticky, and already a hit at the best kitchen after parties. Hobo Art by Capablanca & Young. Weirdo magick.

Loop
Review: The Puss label overseen by breakout producer HNNY and Studio Barnhus founder Kornel Kovacs continues to be a source for club ready sounds, with the all caps loving producer at the helm for this much anticipated fourth release. Based around a liberal sample of the Queen Bee, "Sneeze" is one of those club jams that will appeal to party DJs, starting at a hip-hop tempo before a neat little vocal edit sees the track crank up the BPM exponentially and transformed into a no-nonsense house cut. It's a pretty simple idea executed perfectly and you are likely to hear this all over the festivals this summer.

Todd Terje - "Snooze 4 Love" (version)
Son Of Sam - "Nature Makes A Mistake" (Jack Plug Supernatural dub)
Review: 2011 was a pretty special year for Gerd Janson's imperious Running Back imprint and they open proceedings on the next annual chapter with two cuts from their digital archives on this killer Digital Dubplates 10". The A Side houses an absolutely sublime version of Todd Terje's "Snooze 4 Luv" from the magnificent Ragysh EP, further exposing the sumptuous horizontal qualities with aplomb. Providing some nice contrast is an equally refined remix of Son of Sam's "Nature Makes A Mistake" from Jack Plug. The reissue of this 1984 industrially charged oddity was our favourite Running Back release of last year, and the chance to grasp a physical copy of Plug's effort (which is superior to the more highly lauded Ame remix) should not be passed up. Running Back also win the prize for first great runout groove inscriptions of 2012.

African Man (Ricardo Vilalobos & Max Loderbauer remix) (12:12)
Go Back (feat Damon Albarn - Fort Romeau Absolut remix) (5:50)
Review: Tony Allen's most recent long player, Film Of Life, is revisited here with both Ricardo Villalobos and Max Loderbauer, and rising house producer Fort Romeau tasked with remixing the Nigerian drummer's work. Vilod, as they are preferring to be called these days, sit up top with a typically long form take on "African Man" which reconstitutes the blaring horn funk of Allen's original piece into a subtle 12 minute reduction of electronic house music. On the flip Ghostly artist Fort Romeau reimagines the Damon Albarn featuring "Go Back" as whispy, deep house with some charming analogue synth flourishes.

Beatin' Tha Breaks (original mix) (3:45)
Review: Brooklyn label Razor-N-Tape get in on the Record Store Day action with this 10" edition of Beatin Tha Breaks from Nashville-based Magic In Threes. It's the remixes that come first, with Dutch artist Fouk going into similar house territory to Kenny Dope with plenty of live instrumental touches blessing the bristling percussion. It's a totally different vibe on the Freddie Joachem remix, with the Californian opting for some midtempo funk breaks that stay closer to the sound of Magic In Threes' original version . This closes out the RSD release on the B-side and is an easy-breezy affair dripping with soulful guitars and harmonies.

Review: This great anonymous artists project is rumoured to be the guys behind the Cestraw and Soul Notes labels... but enough of the guessing games and onto the music! There's absolutely no guesswork when it comes to this series of wicked 10" releases; they've been pretty good so far. On the A side is some smooth and jazzy groove that samples Alfonso's old digger's delight "This Is Underground" and indeed it is pretty sweet. On the B side we're sure is a certain Moodymann track that has had an edit and it is one utterly sublime serving of deepness!

Techno
Heal (8:29)
Plight (8:27)
Review: From his appearances on Aesthetic Audio and Ornate through to his own Atmospheric Existence label, Miles Sagnia continues to be one of the best kept secrets of British deep techno, and that's no more apparent than on this stunning release for Common Dreams. There's a looped up insistence to "Heal", but it's offset by emotive movement in the synth lines and an overall spiritual quality that escapes much cyclical techno. "Plight" takes a slightly slower path, amping up the early UK electronica tones for an immersive experience shaped out by interlocking rhythms and snaking melodies. It's a truly classy statement that stays true to techno while saying something original.

Review: Brescia, Italy based imprint Rebirth offer us some lushious deep house, this time given some fine remix treatments. French duo Villanova get their track "On The Loose" given a fine rework by the Godfather of Deep House himself Larry Heard on this lush and sublime trip that clocks in at just under nine minutes in all its emotive glory and retaining Elbi's powerful vocals. Italian duo Easy to Remember are on the flip and their track "Smokey" gets the re-rub by Philo Louzolou on this jazzy and soulful broken beat excursion reminiscent of Atjazz or Restless Soul. Just stunning!

Fantastic man - "Paradise"
Andy Hart - "My Queen"
Max Graef - "Das Brett"
Review: Australian label Melbourne Deep Cast return! Originally released as part of this year's Record Store Day activities, this Snooze For Days 10" from Melbourne's finest deep house operators is now widely available and features cuts from the Man Fantastique, Andy Hart and Max Graef. Each has supplied some excellent beat down edits of material that some might recognize and others won't; Fantastic Man's slow burning "Paradise" for example is based around a devilishly pitched down vocal of a late 90s neo soul classic that only really comes apparent when the "yeah you might laugh" refrain comes looping into focus. Andy Hart is on straight up discofunk sleaze form with "My Queen" whilst Max Graef cranks up the dust on "Das Brett" which has the best double bass manipulation since Roni Size's "Brown Paper Bag".

Review: The wonderful Blind Jacks Journey return with their first 12" of 2015, and it sees the label return to a track from one of their very first releases in the shape of Acasual's "Spring Theory". A highlight of Dream House Volume 1.3, the German's production is given the royal remix treatment with his highly regarded compatriot, the hero from Heidelberg, Move D, first up. Moufang's unmistakable sense of deepness adds a whole new dimension to "Spring Theory", and results in another gorgeous Move D production. On the B side it's Luv Jam lending his hand this time, on more of a lo-fi version with a bouncy bassline, dreamy, floating strings and a murmuring vocal melody.

Review: Make A Dance sub-label Make A Dance Edits is back with a second serving of red hot dance floor heaters from the eponymous production outfit. 'Body II Body' is all steamy vocals over a seductive deep disco/house beat with plenty of jazzy chords. It's a bobbing and feel good tune to tease any club. On the flip is 'Body II Dub' which is more leggy, with splashy cymbals and languid grooves disked to get deep under your skin and take you on a loved-up journey through deep house.

Fudge Fingas - "Untytled"

Fudge Fingas - "Minus 616"
Review: Firecracker's reputation has been based on pairing some classy deep house and disco productions with the kind of mouth watering art work that sends "hand to wallet" brainwaves coursing through your body. They kind of took it to an amusing extreme with the upfront edition of this Fudge Fingas heavy 10", which was clearly released to test the limits of feverish collectors. All manner of screen printed sleeves and inner sleeves and "authentic Ettore Sottsass 1982 printed fabric bag" clearly did the trick as all 46 copies now sit proudly in collections across the land. This being Firecracker, you could hardly call the full release of Untytled a "bog standard" edition with some rather pretty printed art sealed in a polythene bag. Music wise, two Fudge Fingas originals sandwich Linkwood getting the Fudge Fingas treatment with the effervescent, dusty business of the title track the clear winner for us!
