Club Dread (Harmonic mix)
Club Dread (Sub Harmonic mix)
Review: For the first 10" from his Constant Pressure album, electronic-dub maestro Beat Pharmacy offers up two distinct interpretations of the infectious "Club Dread". That spaced out, minimalist dub that's the Beat Pharmacy trademark is featured on the A-side Harmonic mix, with melodic Detroit chords on top of a percussive glitchy 4/4 groove that's bound to keep the dancefloor throbbing. On the flip the Sub-harmonic mix is a deep, lush dub house joint that swirls and whooshes along with a huge dub bassline. Both mixes feature the dubbed out vocals of reggae legend Mikey Dread. Essential stuff for the Jah Love, Francois K and Rhythm & Sound heads.

Shards
Silhoueted
Review: ***B-STOCK: Record has very light surface marks/smudges, but otherwise in perfect working order***

PSYTH launches with the debut EP from Rob Shields. With a delicate urgency driven by a pulsating post-punk bassline, Shards
lavishes layer upon rich layer of sound, evoking the cool grooves of Peaking Lights and Chromatics, while a shimmering vocal
sample from Rebecca Sawyer adds an otherworldly sense of longing that echoes through the soul of the release. Silhouetted appears
more conventional and dance-floor friendly next to Shards, but under the surface is something unique and strangely exotic. A
mantra-like melody loop gives a nod to minimalist composer Terry Riley and his solo organ works, while world instruments such as
an African kalimba and Tibetan singing bowl only heighten the hypnotic and intoxicating quality even further.

Juliette
Review: The Church White series returns with a second offering and it's a local affair with Rye Wax man FYI Chris bringing some contemporary UK house heat with two fully flavoured cuts. Previously known as one half of Nandos obsessed production unit Piri Piri, FYI Chris is no less potent on the buttons when he's flying solo on the evidence here with "No Hurry" hinting at a similar dusty fingered grasp of house music's inner workings to Mr Dez Andres. Flip the hand stamped 10" and "Juliete" is a more explicitly UK affair thanks to its tumbling percussive swing, percolating synths and expertly diced and layered vocals and it's entirely the kind of thing you expect on Church.

Lulo (7:35)
Guava (6:12)
Review: Church's latest release - a rather tasty, two-track ten-inch single - comes courtesy of South London sorts DJ Malcolm and Dabriel Garius. A-side "Lulo", a jazzy deep house cut smothered in expansive piano solos, dreamy synth chords and sampled female vocals, is particularly potent, with the duo expertly layering up the percussion to give the track a sun-kissed, carnival-friendly feel. Flipside "Guava" displays a similar jazz influence, with the duo trading electric piano and trumpet solos over elastic synth bass and swinging, semi-broken deep house grooves. It's what we imagine a contemporary collaboration between Phil Asher and 2000Black boys Dego and Kaidi Tatham would sound like, which is high praise indeed.

Ousana (original)
Ousana (Coyote remix)
Review: Is it Balearic drop a 10' slice of acid house perfection from one of the true masters of the genre in 'Foolish' Felix Dickinson! "Ousana" grows slowly over a driving house beat as warm synth pads and synth leads take the track along nicely with a subtle acid line until the bassline drops. A vocal refrain joins the groove seductively cooing 'I want to take you home' over the acid layers that develop in deeply hypnotic fashion. Straight into the basement. On the flip Coyote take the tempo down, bring out the percussion and create a Balearic acid stomper. Bleeps dubbed out vocals all swirl around the percussive rhythms then the acid line drops subtle and reminiscent of a certain acid house classic. Early doors or at the beach bar for this mix.

Ma Body
Review: Waze & Odyssey are dealing in a lean kind of old-skool flavoured house music which has made its way onto Southern Fried and Wolf Music in 2012. Launching their own imprint to put out their cool and deadly deep house, "Love That (Burns Hot Enough)" kicks things off with a straight-up pumper full of DX7 bassline vibes and light and summery piano chords. It's a simple trick finished off with a snappy diva vocal hook. "Ma Body" is a marginally moodier affair, focusing more on the rhythm section and keeping excessive elements held back until a Casio keyboard line comes in, shredding everything down to pure bliss.

Salik - "Inna Brixton" (5:51)
DJ Sotofett - "Acid Site Mix" (6:27)
Review: DJ Sotofett's Wania imprint closes a wild and entertaining 2017 off with a pair of masterful EPs, both of them showcasing the Norwegian's genre-crossing tastes and outlook. First up is this steely 10", spear-headed by newcomer Salik, out of London Town. Up until now, the imprint has predominantly focussed on the US styles of dance music, a rough and ever-quirky blend of house and techno, but Salik's "Inna Brixton" verges on much more UK-centric territories with its near six minute spew of moody energy, clicking and bouncing steadily to the sound of deep, treacherous sub bass. The flipside features DJ SO-PHAT himself, coming through with a beatless away of acid-tinged melodies that blend into a tight little rhythm, before dissipating into a loose pool of drones and bass - Sotofett at his most outlandish. An essential buy.

Como Como (feat Drieser & Sexto Sentido)
Review: Brownswood return to Mala's triumphant LP from last year in triumphant fashion, calling on the masterful Theo Parrish to rework "Como Como" on this rather enticing looking 10" slab. As one of the few vocal cuts to feature on Mala In Cuba, it's natural that the Sound Signature boss would look to "Como Como" when invited to remix a track from the LP and in his hands the soothing tones of Drieser & Sexto Sentido are brought to the fore. Additionally instead of a complete reinvention, Parrish opts to extend the track adding his own twinkling synth lines to complement Mala's luxuriant chord patterns. Contender for remix of the year?

Phazzled (Ike Release produced)
Review: After Hakim Murphy and Ike Release inaugurated the Innerspace Halflife project earlier this year with a sublime debut on the former's Machining Dreams imprint - they now grace Aroy Dee's ever excellent MOS Deep label with a further enthralling journey. Even if the aforementioned Cosmology EP passed you by, you should be familiar enough with the respective solo endeavours of both producers to be suitably excited by "Wind". You won't be disappointed either, with the track unfurling from its icy origins into a monstrous arrangement dominated by the fluctuating acid bassline and razor sharp hi-hats, while the soaring chords that intermittently spread expansively over proceedings add brief moments of Utopian calm amid the relentless jacking pressure. This is complemented by a solo Ike Release cut in the shape of "Phazzled" which adopts a more atmospheric tone as ever present clouds of analogue fx add a hazy sensation to the strident drum programming and woozy chord arrangements - quite aptly described by MOS Deep as "classicist house with a future perspective".

Review: Next month sees Freerange boss Jimpster return to the album game with Porchlight and Rocking Chairs, this hand stamped 10" acts as a neat teaser for what to expect. Lead track "Rollergirl" pumps in arpeggio like a night drive scene from a '80s music video clip, while breathy male vocals whisper in the tracks background. It's a melodic piece fuelled by muted tension and soft aggression. On the flip is "Hold My Hand", a track featuring all the Jimpster trimmings; deep piano chords, spoken word vocals, chromatic synth loops and soft, yet thumpy drums.

Review: Publicist is longtime producer/performer/musician Sebastian Thomson. His tracks approach house music from a darker angle, adding processed vocals and noise to a raw foundation that also takes cues from New Beat, acid house, and Detroit techno.
When performing live Publicist sequences the synths and not the drums, preferring to play an electronically treated drum kit in the middle of the dance floor. This adds an element of sweat, excitement and virtuosity not found in most electronic producer's live performances.
Sebastian Thomson is also known as a founding member of post rock pioneers Trans Am and as the drummer of heavy metal innovators Baroness.
Living in Brooklyn by way of Buenos Aires, Washington DC and London, Publicist has spent the last four years touring Europe extensively.

A hardware only affair, "Neon Light Time" and "Pola" show off Brunn's unbeatable Clavia keys and the delightful analogue 707 touch as he manipulates his hardware through tough, gritty beats and into a deep, balmy house groove. A master of his trade, Brunn doesn't attempt anything out of the ordinary on Dust Part 2, but rather manipulates the beats with an intricate poise. Ma Spaventi - "Wrecking"
Aroy Dee - "Mr Floyd"
Review: There's something strangely appealing about M>O>S Deep releasing music on a 10" record; the compact size and the neat packaging are complemented by the fact that each piece of music is so stripped down, raw and full of sub-bass that they can barely press it onto such a small and lovable piece of wax. And in keeping with releases from 2AM/FM and D'Marc Cantu, the tenth release for M>O>S Deep - a split EP with Ma Spaventi and label boss Aroy Dee - features two tracks packed with so much raw power that the grooves struggle to tie them down. The record opens with Spaventi's "Wrecking", a stripped down track consisting almost solely of growling acid lines. The whole piece of music seemingly hangs on a menacing and aggressive 303 workout set at a snail's pace and interspersed with crisp hi-hats and a kick drum soaked in reverb. Aroy Dee provides balance with the flipside and his peculiarly titled "Mr Floyd". In typical Dee style the track features an unending parade of blissed out pads, gentle textures and layer upon layer of deep house. It gently nudges you along, revealing more depth with each passing minute, allowing the full-bodied percussion to gently build the tension before it melts to nothing amongst his perpetually translucent synth work.

Too Many Facets
Review: Lone's Magic Wire imprint - until now a conduit for Matt Cutler's own productions - opens its door to the fledgling talents of Neon Jung. The first two releases on Magic Wire announced Lone's change of musical direction in consummate style last year, initially with the "Pineapple Crush" single and then the excellent Emerald Fantasy Tracks mini album. Neon Jung's release - pressed up on a nice little 10" - certainly adheres to the Magic Wire ethos of drawing on classic influences and dipping them in contemporary sonic aesthetics, with the two tracks dripping with seriously raved-up chords and a vintage electro bump. "Just Can't Leave It Alone" is a killer mutant house jam that bumps and twists in all the right places. The midway breakdown shows just how tough those drums really are! Flip over for "Too Many Facets", which fuses a hyperactive synth melody to a quicker broken beat, very much suiting the rainbow coloured artwork that adorns the vinyl. An excellent little package.

Review: A second release of the year for the emergent Common Dreams label sees Reedale Rise producer Simon Keat join the fold with a pair of thoughtful, pensive deep house cuts. Lead track "Pressure Box" is the track with a sense of unpredictable funk, giving us juicy chords, starry-eyed pads and an overall nice atmosphere with the drums moving ever forward. The B-side "Azikiwe" fuses sporadic arpeggiations with some very thoughtful chord melodies. Maybe it could be described as having a more psychedelic twist. Another fine house record from the Common Dreams team.

Review: The always classy deep house emporium Boe recently uncovered a gem of Ukrainian production talent with The First Transition EP from the previously unheralded G-Transition. Wisely the label have secured some more well paced house movements from the mysterious producer with this highly limited ten inch, snappily titled The Second Transition. Lead track "Guiding Light" is so slow it feels ever so slightly dragging at 45rpm! Don't be put off though, as the laid back pace and simple drum programming consisting of little more than delayed congas and shuffling hats allows the expertly arranged layers of harmonious synth, Rhodes, analogue bass and strings the chance glisten. Less is more on the flip as "It's Not An Artform, Just Beats" lives up to its name with a little more than a rasping groove and gently expressive arpeggiated lead floating over a restrained backdrop of fizzing atmosphere.

Review: Italian artist Paul Santangelo has been having fun messing with the sometimes po-faced traditions of the house music scene through a raft of home made productions on SoundCloud, but now with his Venetian Causeway label he's able to prove the clout to be found in his music. On this 10" the arch title "Generic House Traxx" actually does a disservice to the quality of the music contained within - Santangelo does a fine job of whipping up monosynth bass and ethereal pads astride an uptempo beat that, while familiar, has an atmosphere with considerable depth to it. "Please Him" on the B side goes further out on a mellow electro tip, plaintive leads and aqueous chords flirting with 808-style beats.

Review: Minuendo calls upon Vincent Inc and Danijel Kevic to kick off their latest single, and they do so in fine style with the luxurious sweeping chords of "Space". Twinkling pianos, speech samples and a carefully measured set of deep house drums make this the consummate slice of pool-side dance music for those who can still find some sun at this time of year. Lola Allen steps up to the B side with something a little more sassy in the shape of "Afrofusion Jazz". As the title might suggest, there's a mixture of influences tumbling into this track, most notably with some wildly filtered jazz organ and funk licks stewing in the pot, and just when you think it's going to break it swerves off into submerged Moodymann territory. This is unpredictable house music at its finest.

The Chicago-based producer was on a productive roll through 2015, both solo and alongside Hakim Murphy in Innerspace Halflife, but now he breaks his silence with a sturdy two-tracker for Finale Sessions. As you would expect, gritty machine jams are the order of the day, but there's plenty of soul and mystery sprinkled atop the box beats to make for spellbinding results. Both "Tangerines" and "Tungsten" lurk in the lower registers of the tempo range, but there's a weight behind these productions that makes it far from mere warm-up fodder.

The original version of "Watch Out!" features Charli James on vocals, cooing out a righteous delivery over a chunky, squelchy rhythm loaded with 80s funk signifiers. Inkswel then delivers a tripped out dub of the track that will have all lovers of weirdo grooves grinning inanely, while on the flip "Uglyink Theme" gets into a woozy downtempo house frame of mind. "Fresh Out The Water" slows things down even further with a prime slab of dreamy boogie modernism that would go down smooth next to some Dam Funk.

The two Roman beat soldiers are a constant presence on our radars, always keeping things fresh and in flux. They land head-high on the young and vibrant Really Swing label with these naughty three cuts, spread across two sides of 10" wax - our favourite format. "Ostia 1982" makes reference to Rome's decadent riviera and the italo-disco movement, where its 4/4 disco licks dominate the A-side with pride and mystique. "Traffic Jam" is a wonky boogie chiller with liquid-like electro bass tones, and "Foresta" heads down the jazzy pastures that these two usually like to indulge in; the tune is a magnificent excursion into a deep and chimerical world of percussion and ethereal sonics. Bliss.

ODDNIPP - "Sneaknipp" (8:54)
Review: Artwork of the week goes to Blind Jack's Journey and this Polar Nip 10" from Error 404 and Oddnip!! Oh yes and the music is pretty damn great too as you'd expect from the perennially on point and perennially sold out Yorkshire label. Up top, the unheralded Error 404 delivers a slab of slow burning acid that bumps and fizzes in all the right places for over seven minutes - a bit like a pitched down Funkineven track and a nice cut for when you want to add a bit of drama to the early hours of a clubnight. Down below and Blind Jack's graduate Errornipp comes through with a delicious slab of beatdown house with plenty of neat interplay between those fat kickdrums and those grooving melodies.

Heal (8:29)
Plight (8:27)
Review: From his appearances on Aesthetic Audio and Ornate through to his own Atmospheric Existence label, Miles Sagnia continues to be one of the best kept secrets of British deep techno, and that's no more apparent than on this stunning release for Common Dreams. There's a looped up insistence to "Heal", but it's offset by emotive movement in the synth lines and an overall spiritual quality that escapes much cyclical techno. "Plight" takes a slightly slower path, amping up the early UK electronica tones for an immersive experience shaped out by interlocking rhythms and snaking melodies. It's a truly classy statement that stays true to techno while saying something original.

Review: Alix Perez here with a release you'd expect to surface on Eglo under his Arp 101 alias as opposed to Shogun Audio. Regardless, Annie's Song is a bold statement of Perez's undoubted production talents, demonstrating he's fully capable of producing tracks that in a perfect world would gain mainstream success. Teaming up with vocalist Sam Willis, "Annie's Song" is a vivid, 21st century slant on UK RnB replete with slow burning synths, half step drum programming and plucked strings. On the flip Shadow Child rewires the track for the club, fixing on an authentic UKG flex that sounds like it's been dug up from a forgotten DJ EZ mixtape.

Road To Nowhere
Brothers & Sisters
Review: **REPRESS** The Jack Fell Down duo made a considerable splash last year with releases on Southern Fried and Hometaping Is Killing Music and now they resurface in style with the Another Way EP. The second offering from new Sccucci Manucci offshoot, Manucci's Mistress, this 10" operation is a good home for the Jack Fell Down sound. Lead track "Road To Nowhere" displays a pensive melodic restraint that many of the new crop of house producers seem to overlook in their excitement to get productions from Ableton to Soundcloud. If the A Side sounds like Jack Fell Down holding back, then "Brothers & Sisters" could potentially have them sectioned, such is the crazed madness of the screaming vocals that intermittently punctuate the 90s rave stabs. Great fun.

This Side Of Sunshine
Review: Killer debut turn on Mr Zap's Ethereal Sounds label from Miruga, last seen appearing on the appropriately named Drift Deeper label at the turn of 2012. Ethereal Sound completists will gladly add the Human Tube EP to their collection, with the two tracks from the Japanese producer a perfect fit for the label's aesthetic. Commencing with freeform percussive touches cascading around the channels, the title track eventually settles into a thick set groove, with a glacial sheen somehow keeping a lid on the many layers of texture and found sound that Miruga packs inbetween. It has that dual sensation of busy and calm that punctuates so much Ethereal Sound output and is complemented by the facedown business of "This Side Of Sunshine", a bonafide entry into deep house authenticity. A central playful axis between stop start piano samples caked in vinyl crackle and equally dusty drums is complemented by some well judged chord shimmers that remain just within ear shot - you can picture Peterson investing in fresh pants at the mere prospect of playing this one.

Prototype (Mr Beatnick dub)
Review: Last seen on the Join Our Club label, rising UK producer Clarke Sawkill steps into the physical realm with Prototype, an excellent debut for the Bokhari Records imprint. Primed for optimum club play, Sawkill lays down the one original track which is complemented on the B Side by a remix from the excellent Mr Beatnick. "Prototype" is one long, lolloping slo mo DJ tool with the sort of rolling bassline that tends to wedge itself quite comfortably in your affections and demonstrates Sawkill might be a producer to keep your eye on. Mr Beatnick opts to implement a slightly faster tempo that suits his now familiar sense of melodic warmth down to a tee. Another great 12" from the Bokhari crew.

Whistle Time
Review: Foto Recordings goes all symbolic for their tenth release. Keeping the numbers in symmetry the 2-track single from label boss OOFT! is pressed on to 10" vinyl, and features one pitched-down & one pitched-up jam. Lead track "Here For You" summons some 70s soul vocals and layers new beats and synths underneath to create a pitch-down monster suitable for late nights and end-of-set moments. On the flip "Whistle Time" has more of a steady summer-house strut with disco samples rubbing up against some understated 303s to provide some terrace action over the warmer months ahead.

The Way We Were

Deep House
Review: With a title like "The Way We Were", it's perhaps unsurprising that this latest missive from former Creme Organization artist Myriadd is a tribute to the glory days of '80s acid house. As you'd expect, it's authentically made, offering a rock-hard fusion of tough analogue drums, droning acid bass and 303-bating riffs. Although alien and icy, there's still a warmth to proceedings thanks to sympathetic mastering and Myriadd's use of vintage analogue gear. Even better, though, is John Heckle's remix, which somehow puts a rocket up the original and turns it into a sweaty, arms-raised belter. It may be called "The Way We Were", but it still sounds fresh.

Specter - "Firefly"
Banfield Audio - "Static Buzz"
Review: Starting up the Monochromatic imprint in style, two fine examples of deep house exploration show their skills off with a track each on this slab. Specter is up first, mixing together cavernous tones with cheeky FM bell leads and a strange off key chord stab for the central melodic hook, delivered through the Fred P school of atmospheric reverb usage while the beat ticks away dutifully. Having only scored a remix prior to this more noticeable appearance, Banfield Audio is supremely focused in their mission with a hypnotic square wave bassline and elegant drum machine beat, with very little else in the way of distractions.

Review: So, who is this mysterious Afefe Iku? After absolutely destroying the dancefloors all year long with his infamous bootleg of Radiohead's "Everything In Its Right Place", which he smartly put out in extremely limited amounts of vinyl around the same time his mentor, Osunlade, featured his cover of that very same song on BBE's "Exit Music: Songs With Radio Heads". In all honesty Afefe remains a mystery even to us. So, let us start by saying who Afefe isn't. Unfortunately, for those who thought he was Osunlade, you are mistaken, but don't feel ashamed, because Afefe creates at Osunlade´s studio in Santorini, which makes sense to pinpoint him as Osunlade. Afefe is a very quiet man. Like our lost brother, J Dilla, Afefe wants his music to do the talking. And this is exactly what we're going to do. "Body Drummin" is exactly what it is. A percussion heavy track strictly for the dancefloor, its organic, yet techy-tinged feel brings such an urgency to move your hips that we would only recommend this for playing after midnight. Of course, if you insist, be our guests.

Osunlade beautifully captures the pain and courage faced by Teresa on the original mix. In true Yoruba style, this percussion heavy mid-tempo song compliments Teresa's "Remember" perfectly.

Review: Two of TLB's classic cuts get updated here, with 'Our Rhythm' reconstructed by Matthias Tanzmann {aka Gamat 3000} and 'Terry's House' re-rubbed by Terry himself! Tanzmann completely deconstructs 'Our Rhythm' and turns it into a crunchy reduced house weapon with relentless bassline pressure and a techy heads-down appeal. TLB's remix adds dirtier edges and intricate percussion to the original, resulting in a wicked tech-house offering.

Review: Adorning ten inches of clear red vinyl, Skylax present the latest in their series of Terre Thaemlitz curated House Explosion releases. Volume 3 sees the house music polemicist present live versions of tracks that were part of Electronics, his 2008 collaboration with conceptual German noise orchestra Zeitkratzer. Recorded in Berlin, Sprinkles drops live acoustic versions of "Down Home Kami - Sakunobe" and "Hobo Train" which stretch the concepts of what passes for deep house brilliantly. This is resolutely not music you'd bang in a warehouse at 2am and is a marked contrast to the deranged Moodymannisns of the recent House Explosion Vol 2 but Sprinkles fans will love this.

The Way I Feel
3 AM
Review: When you get Gadi Wolf, Deniz Kurtel and Desolat chap Guti on the same record the results are going to be rich in sound and highly desirable amongst the deep house fraternity. Purportedly recorded as the virgin hours of 2011 settled down in the luxurious climes of the Marcy Hotel, there's a languid sensation to the latest Double Standard ten inch that backs up the myth. A Sider "The Way I Feel" is a fuzzed out odyssey of warm bass and gentle tones of piano and chords intertwined across a bed of delicate drums, with more than a hint of intimacy and lustful thoughts added by Kurtel's distant cooing. Complementing this, "3am" sees the trio indulge in a muddy trudge through rough hewn beatdown, gradually unfurling into a so slow but so good vocal led, loose limbed techno throb, perfectly suited for the time hinted at in the title.
