Review: This new 10" from New York label Sunshine Sound (which is often a label said to be recognised as the 'birthplace of the edit') features a couple of legendary edits by the one and only Francois K. They are in fact medleys that find him workings mixing desk hard as he layers in tribal chants, drum funk, sick percussion and plenty of breaks, whistles and more. He did them first back in the disco heyday and yet they still very much have the same uplifting and irresistible impact on dancers now as they did back then.

Review: A really cool concept from Expansion here; one side is a reissued seminal classic, the other is a contemporary version. And what a way to start the start the series; hard bop hero Johnny Hammond influenced pretty much every soul, jazz, rare groove and funk artist who've followed in his path, and the joyously unpredictable "Los Conquistadores Chocolates" is one of his best. Naturally Japanese jazz outfit Quasimode are an ideal remix choice. Known for their wildstyle riffage and signature switches, they've paid the utmost respect to Hammond.

Review: Killer disco rarity alert! Never officially released, Walter Gibbons and Paul Cassella's remix of The Temptations' 'Law of the Land' was something of a secret weapon for a handful of New York disco DJs in the late 1970s. Acetates exist in very small numbers, but this is the first time the remix has been given a wider release. It's a delightful - and impressively grandiose - extension of the Motown favourites' disco classic, with Gibbons adding his own spoken word vocals: a tongue-in-cheek recital of the Old Testament's 'Ten Commandments' (or at least a version of them). It's utterly great all told and should be in every disco DJ's collection. The B-side, incidentally, is a handclap track created by Gibbons for mixing purposes - he was, after all, one of the earliest beat-matching jocks and a genuine pioneer.

Review: Oceanvs Orientalis and Ilhan Ersahin first entered each other's orbits by chance at a performance at Turkey's Cappadox Festival in 2018. Orientalis is renowned for his fusion of Eastern musical motifs and traditions with cutting-edge electronica, while Ilhan Ersahin has long plowed a unique path uniting assorted musical strains from around the world via an exploratory jazz-improv sensibility. Following two tracks ('Mesta' and 'Pire') co-written by Ilhan and OvO and released as collaborations, as well as two more Ersahin / OvO co-writes ('Revenge Of The Wankers' and 'Television') released under OvO's name alone, a fresh and exciting new song, '1980', now heralds a full-length collaboration slated to land in Spring 2024. The track's title hints at a certain nostalgic bent, all while still keeping its gaze firmly fixed on the future as it evokes sun-drenched, bygone good times. The 10" edition adds several extra versions, one of which spotlights the multi-instrumental mastery of Darkside's Dave Harrington, and the other the mesmerizing vocal stylings of Gaye Su Akyol.

Review: Some 40 years after releasing his first material, Cerrone continues to deliver new music. As the title suggests, Afro sees the French disco legend paying tribute to African music, with the assistance of two rather special guests. Drummer Tony Allen makes his mark on the rather brilliant "2nd Chance", delivering the loose, swinging, booty-shaking rhythm that underpins Cerrone's trademark piano work, clipped funk guitars and grandiose orchestration. Makossa pioneer Manu Dibango assists on "Funk Makossa", which appears to be a killer new version of his 1972 classic "New Bell". Todd Edwards delivers a surprisingly reverential Afro-house revision of that track, while Mind Enterprises get all cosmic and dubbed-out on their deliciously spacey rendition of "2nd Chance".

Review: Those with good memories may remember Sacred Rhythm's late '90s and early 2000s sister label Natural Resource, which existed primarily as an outlet for founder Joaquin 'Joe' Clausell's "deeper, electronic soundscape" style productions. SORA, which debuts with this coloured vinyl 10", is its' replacement. Clausell is naturally in top form across both productions. A-side 'Subtle Light' is undeniably"gorgeous, with Clausell wrapping twinkling, sunset-friendly piano solos, shimmering synth strings and spacey electronics around a tactile, undulating dream house bassline and hybrid drum machine/hand percussion beats. On B-aside 'Peakaboo We See You', the long-serving NYC producer opts for a darker, more heads-down 'deep-tech' sound, adding raw, rough and menacing stabs, tribal style percussion hits and bold aural textures to a weighty, peak-time-ready house beat.

The Francois K and Walter Gibbons resplices here of 'Happy Song' is their first vinyl release, known as the original DJ tool (and the original bonus beat) which has been the source of countless samples and imitations since it first appeared in 1977. Kevorkian's version on the A side is the most commonly known one, with its upbeat infectious rhythm, while Gibbons' take over on the flip has more stomp and was very much streamlined for his legendary DJ sets at Galaxy 21.

Review: Antonio Ocasio is a spiritual house veteran truly embedded in the story of NYC house music since he minted the Tribal Winds label in 1998. There were a few years where things went quiet, but Ocasio has been back in action in 2023 and swiftly following up the Soulciety Music Series release with this stunning 12". On the A-side we get Sugah Lyrics offering her hushed, poetic vocal tones amidst the rolling percussion and dreamlike synth work of 'Sacred Tones'. Review: Tony Allen's most recent long player, Film Of Life, is revisited here with both Ricardo Villalobos and Max Loderbauer, and rising house producer Fort Romeau tasked with remixing the Nigerian drummer's work. Vilod, as they are preferring to be called these days, sit up top with a typically long form take on "African Man" which reconstitutes the blaring horn funk of Allen's original piece into a subtle 12 minute reduction of electronic house music. On the flip Ghostly artist Fort Romeau reimagines the Damon Albarn featuring "Go Back" as whispy, deep house with some charming analogue synth flourishes.

It's the sort of immediately heartwarming tune that draws from soul, jazz funk, disco and more to cook up a steamy and excellent groove. On the flip is Diplomats Of Soul with their own super cover of 'Brighter Tomorrow' featuring Brit funk and acid jazz greats Incognito & Imaani.

Review: The prevailing wisdom in music is 'if it ain't broke don't fix it', and we had some trepidation when we learned that there were reworks planned of Terrence Parker's "Love's Got Me High". Despite these reservations, it's clear that Marc Romboy and Jimpster have delivered versions that are respectful of the original and certainly meet its high standards. Romboy's take centres on loose, organic drums and soulful keys, filtered subtly. These elements provide the basis for a sensuous male vocal to intone the track's title. Jimpster's take is trackier and more suited to DJ usage, its hissing, rasping percussion combined expertly with an insistent rhythm, but here too Rhodesy keys and crowd screams and yells ensure it has a high soul quota. Check it!

Review: The smooth and seductive sounds of Pulp Corn come at us for another fine EP here from the in house production team. As ever the influences are broad with 'Tarik 1' featuring a soul vocal and some swooning strings that bring an almost Eagles-style vibe to the rolling house drums and elastic bass. It's a good time sound for winning over any crowd in loved-up settings. On the flip, 'Track 2' is led by a sax taking on an iconic melody from the 'Sunny' tune and allowing it to drift of bustling and bristling funky house beats. Two characterful cuts with lots to like.

Review: Acid Cuts has got more brain twisting 303 madness served up here on a weird and wonderful lathe-cut 8" that is strictly limited to just 50 copies. Acitude is at the helm for this one with 'Bass Of Life' opening up and layer up prickly lines with jacked up beats and screwy bass. A beats version is then another wonky drum-led workout with 'Confused Bass' pushing things further with gurgling lines, pixel thin synths, dusty hi-hats and more analogue drums. 'Feel The Jam' is a final wonky closer.

Review: Very limited double 10" from Berlin based producer Sven Weisemann, who pops up with his first original release of 2010. The self taught pianist, acoustic guitarist and percussionist is just as happy dabbling in jazz and soundtracks as he is piecing together deep house and techno, and across two sumptuous 10"s we are treated to the full breadth of his talents. The ethereal beauty of "Lateral Flection" offers nary a kick drum, with Weisemann instead focusing on layering intricate sonic atmospherics. "Tidal Wave", meanwhile, conjures images of a gentle ocean rather than tsunamis, and the sparse, barely-there percussion and ghostly whispers on "Placid Love" mark it as perhaps the most beautiful moment on the LP. A well worn phrase it may be, but these tracks need to heard through a nice set of speakers or headphones for the listener to fully appreciate the subtle textures and electronic nuances. Simply stunning.

Review: A limited release of the lively variety, the two Okinos revisit an old groove, originally presented on Public Transport. A tight jaunt that swings with the expert trumpet blasts and Bembe's crisp, deep delivery, this is so smooth you don't notice the seismic switches of time signature. "Karmpa Chenno" is much sexier affair with an almost cosmic flavour to the percussive, organ-driven groove. This time you do notice the time signature creativity on the chorus. The change of energy adding that sense of surprise and sassiness KJM are known for.

Review: This hand-stamped white label 12" from the Pulp Corn crew is the 10th such offering and still, they are cooking up irresistible house fusions that do plenty of good things. 'Track 1' here takes a classic vocal sample from the Pulp Fiction movie and layers it into a freewheeling disco house sound that is cosmic, funky and retro-future by design. After that loopy workout comes the more freewheeling broken beats and Latin-inspired sounds of 'Track 2' which again has a classic movie sample as the centrepiece while the drums evolve all around. Playful and fun for sure.

Review: By anyone's standards, Todd Terje & The Olsens' recent The Big Cover-Up - in which the Norwegian producer and his regular live band delivered idiosyncratic cover versions of stone cold classics - was something of a triumph. That EP also included remixes from various music industry pals, including Prins Thomas and Idjut Boy Dan Tyler. This EP boasts two more revisions from the latter, including a deliciously percussive, dubbed-out and floor-friendly "bonus beats" version of his "Firecracker" remix, the full version of which was featured on The Big Cover-Up. Better still is Tyler's rework of Terje and company's version of Martin Circus' camp disco classic "Disco Circus". Dubby, spaced-out, percussive and blessed with those oh-so-familiar backing vocals, it's an undeniable dub disco delight.

Review: According to their website, Too Slow To Disco Edits' latest recruits, the Flying Mojito Brothers, are "two country-disco mescoleros pioneering the great electronic wilderness". The two reworks showcased on this rather charming red ten-inch are in some ways fully in-keeping with the more disco-fied end of their output, and a touch faster and more peak-time ready than some of Too Slow To Disco's output. The standout is undoubtedly A-side 'Good Feeling', a rolling and steadily building affair that stretches out a rubbery bassline propelled, soul-flecked disco groove before introducing the vocals and wider instrumentation from their (rather good) source material. Turn to the flip for 'Fadin' West', a sunset-ready revision of an AOR disco/swamp funk fave that chugs along at an attractively low tempo.
