Safari (Lexx Discomix) (7:38)
Review: Emotional Rescue closes out another brilliant year with one final hot drop. This sorting 7" Safari by King Sporty was the artist's first ever single back in 1976. It comes after the label has served up plenty of reissues of the man known as Noel Wiliam's tackle but this one might be the best. It's from his album Deep Reggae Roots and is nice tropical excursion with steamy hits, wooden percussive sounds and funky bass over a low-slung groove and chanting vocals. This one is backed with a special disco mix by Lexx that reworks the tune for more lively moments.

Review: In 1976, seven Cabo Verdean musicians going by the name Voz Di Sanicolau gathered in a small recording studio in Rotterdam where they laid down an album of fearsome coladeira songs inspired by the music of their home island of Sao Nicolau.

The album took only a few days to record, which may explain the unexpected urgency that fires each track. Treble-soaked electric guitar lines snake back and forth through percussion-and-cavaquinho driven rhythms rooted in the sound of the islands established by the previous generation of Cabo Verdean emigres; subtle keyboards wash through the background, and the vocals, traded between Joana Do Rosario and To-Ze, alternately push the music forward and soar above it. The resulting album is both deeply felt and fiercely executed, and in its grooves one hears the sound of some of the finest Cabo Verdean musicians of their era locked in complete unity of purpose.

It should have been the beginning of something extraordinary; but the pressures of making ends meet forced the musicians back to their day jobs, and Voz Di Sanicolau vanished as quickly as they had appeared, leaving their lone album, Fundo de Mare Palinha, as sole proof of their existence. Forty-four years later the album sounds as fresh as it did the day it was recorded. It is unknown if dutch sound engineer Frans Rolland, who oversaw the recordings, knew he was helping to make history: during these sessions, Joana Do Rosario, whose majestic vocals were crucial to the sound of Voz Di Sanicolau, became the first Cabo Verdean woman ever to appear on a long playing record.

Ce N'est Pas Bon (JD Twitch edit) (5:20)
Review: Long term advocates of JD Twitch's selecting skills will be very happy to see the appearance of this 10" featuring the Optimo man's edit of Amadou & Mariam. Originally made back in 2008, this edit has been a staple of JD Twitch sets and was intended to be released as part of the third volume of the superb charity focused Autonomous Africa series that was issued earlier this year. Licensing issues put the kibosh on those plans, but with the edit having belatedly been granted permission Twitch elected to issue it as one off 10" instead of waiting for volume 4 in 2015. As with the best edits, Twitch's amendments to the original version of "Ce N'est Pas Bon" are subtle and understated, adding little rhythmic elements that make it easier to slip into a DJ set and hypnotise minds. All proceeds will once again go to the Mtandika mission in Tanzania.

Joana (Funky Bompa Edit)
Xintado Na Praca (Funky Bompa Edit)
Review: Joana features two cuts of firing funana from one of Belgium's finest, Funky Bompa, on a rather dashing 10". The title track is a turbo charged funk jam complete with boogie bass, heavily squeezed accordion action and fills so vibrant they'd make a rainbow blush. Flip for "Xintado Na Praca", a cover version of Cape Verde legends Bulimundo which transforms the original into a fusion of spiralling, almost Celtic, folk and stomping African beats and results in what can only be described as a loopy organic techno experience. Truly unique.

Review: Originally released in 2011, Conte's third Viagem collection was his largest and most explorative to date. Now, as he stares down the Brazilian barrel of Viagem 5, Far Out have compiled some of the album's highlights on this highly limited 10" long player. From the roomy drama and piano-punching jazz groove of "Tema em Do" and "Tokyo Blues" to the blissful croons of "Samba De Negro" and the honeyed Hammond strokes of "Copa 70", Conte's dedication to documentarianism in this field is near-matchless.

El Dia De Suerte (discomix)
Mi Sonsito
Si Hecho Palante
Review: Victor Axelrod dons his Ticklah guise for more forward-thinking Latin creativity. Building on his rich repertoire (which includes the Dubside Of The Moon album and Afrofunk band Antibalas), each cut tickles a different part of the central American underbelly... The fire is ignited with a digidub-style samba standard, all spacious, wriggling with far away vocals, "Mi Sonsito" is a little more upbeat with its scuffling rhythm and sing-along chorus and "Si Hecho" concludes this neat release with a rustic lament that's produced with 21st century depth and scope.

From the breath-taking salvo of As Meninas' fast-paced Tropicana samba "Rondo Sambao" to the big brassy suckerpunch of Claudia's "Deixa O Morro Cantar", these cuts (all from around 63-70) saw criminally limited runs when originally released and have been delivered, arranged and celebrated by one of Blue Note's most respected players.

Review: After visiting Australia earlier in the year, Vakula decided to join forces with Sydney-based crate-digger Daniel Lupica to launch Tropical Jam, a global-minded re-edit imprint. This tasty ten-inch marks the label's debut, and as you might expect, it's really rather good. All of the material going under the knife is thoroughly obscure, but also rather good. They open with a punchy and floor-friendly rearrangement of a horn-heavy disco-funk jam of African origin, before working their magic on a low-slung Afro-boogie gem full of low-slung bass, synthesized marimba melodies, flash-fried funk guitars and delay-laden vocal snippets. A brilliant package is completed by an extended take on a soulful, boogie-era Caribbean reggae jam.

El Mezcalero (2:39)
Review: Legendary British musician and producer Will Holland aka Quantic has put together this studio band and in return they have turned out two brilliant instrumental cumbias. There's something of a gypsy feel to the opener with its loose accordion weaving in and out of DIY Colombian perc, steel hits and hand drums. 'Vampiro Sabanero' is chambering in its effervescence and poly-rhythms, while last of all 'El Mezcalero' is a party tune that, like the others, was recorded directly to tape at Selva in 2019.

Elado - "Tudo Magia" (4:25)
Bernardo Pinheiro - "Pitangamanguearaca" (7:05)
Review: The latest limited-edition ten-inch from Brazil's Barefoot beats label offers up two more carnival-ready edits from two rising stars of the nu-disco and edit scenes. Israeli producer Elado handles side A, following up inspired outings on Razor 'N' Tape and Red Motorbike with a subtly beefed-up take on a samba-soaked 1970s MPB gem. Full of heady Brazilian percussion, simmering orchestration, sing-along vocals and jaunty guitars, 'Tudo Magia' is just begging to be played loud in the sunshine. Over on the flip, series regular Bernando Pinheiro takes over, significantly tooling up an excitable Latin disco number via heavier bass and some tough additional percussion. Like the A-side, it sounds like the kind of thing that would get people going as the sun goes down at a music festival.

Review: It's been a fair old while since we last heard from Tropical Jam, the sneaky re-edit imprint from Vakula and Aussie crate digger Daniel Lupica. Surprisingly, this is the duo's first 10-inch missive of humid, floor-friendly revisions since the summer of 2018. They begin in a suitably sunny mood, offering up an on-point rearrangement of a cheery, sax-laden Afro-synth workout that sounds like it originated in the early 1980s. The A-side also boasts a second bubbly synth workout, possibly of a South African cut from the same period, where jaunty Clavinet lines and male/female vocals rise above a sparse but funky groove. Side B, meanwhile, contains a more Balearic-minded electronic cut rich in lo-fi drum machine beats, dreamy chords, chiming lead lines and glassy-eyed vocal snippets.

Let Me Keep Away From You
Review: Destination mid 70s Nairobi where Madagascan guitarist Jimmy Mawi was laying down some serious vibes... Signed to EMI's Pathe imprint, he released three singles during his career which have all since faded to obscurity. Until now. Dusty, garagey and steaming with raw blues fusion, it's hard to deny any parallels to Hendrix as Mawi expresses himself with a rough heartfelt frenzy. Highlights include the Zep-level smoked out soul of "Blue Star Blues" and the insistent drive and reverbed out faraway vocals on "Black Dialogue". Another exemplary Afro-funk find from Soundway.

Review: Afrobeat alert right here, for even the most cynical of Fela believers - no lie! Trombonist Toli Nameless leads this magnificent EP, out through the fledgling Kooyman Records, in what is actually a sort of reissue... or rather an unearthing of some pretty special material that was recorded in the NYC area around about 2003. In what was a series of infamous live performances back then, these recordings has gained fame in the underground name and so this must be a rather special event for anyone whose been longing for their mystical charm until now. "See Line" is the most energetic of the trio, all guns blazing on the percussion front and vocal voodoo, while "Talk Da Shit" provides your more typical Afro funk, except that its way sexier thanks to Toli's brass vibes. The instrumental dub to "Def Ears", however, is the more special of the three and the one to bring out that lovely, heartical bounce that we all yearn for. A magnificent EP. Highly recommended!
