Waveforms 05-06
Waveforms 05-06 (blue marbled vinyl 10")
Cat: WVFRM 03. Rel: 18 Apr 24

Drum & Bass / Jungle
Waveform 05 (5:32)
Waveform 06 (5:27)
Review: Waveforms is as a brand-new label from ASC and Presha who are already well known and respected for their work with Spatial/Auxiliary and Samurai Music. It's a new outlet that will specially tap into the sounds of 90s jungle and serve up new tunes on 10". Tim Reaper has been behind one, and Eusebeia is now on this one on blue-marbled vinyl. A-side cut 'Waveform 05' is a cavernous cut with pulsing bass and spine chillingly ethereal vocals up top while 'Waveform 06' keeps the pressure on with more throwback jungle realness and unrelenting breakbeat pressure.

Waveform 07 (5:21)
Waveform 08 (6:01)
Review: Waveforms is a brand new label spearheaded by ASC and Presha who the already revered minds behind Spatial/Auxiliary and Samurai Music respectively. They say they are on a mission to dive deep into the menacing world of early 90s jungle and cook up tunes reminiscent of that era and then serve them up lovely slabs of 10" wax. And right from the off the man who never misses, Tim Reaper, transports us back to the driving breakbeats and raw energy of that time with a pair of tunes that layer up a flurry of snares and booming low ends with wiry synths the sense of futurism that still holds true to this day. Sure to captivate old-school heads and new listeners alike.

Legalize It (4:56)
Herbalist (4:26)
Review: Pixel and Mystic Pulse join the Rasta Vibez crew for some skunk-skanked jungle fun. First up is a storming rifle-flex twist on Pato Banton's fun-but-firm statement on herbal legalities. Complementing his rapid fire chats with equally thundering amens, it's got reload written into every red groove. Flip for more smoky sonic sermons as they take on another spark-up standard "Herbalist" with such authenticity you could easily be convinced it's 1992 again... Especially if you've practiced the lyrical content so much you think time travel is a thing. Pure Vibez.

Darkage (All Night remix) (7:35)
Axis (Logical Breakup) (6:38)
Review: DJ Solo's stone-cold classic tune 'Darkage' was remixed masterfully by DMS and now the original EP gets a direct, limited edition repress on 10". The tunes have both been remastered for the job and both sound as good now as ever. A-side gem 'Darkage' (DMS remix) is awash with trippy and psychedelic melodic patterns with a pitched-up and soulful vocal that brings the standout element to really make it bang. 'Axis' (DMS remix) then has a similar mix of hardcore and soulful vocals over crispy drum breaks and rave pianos for all out dance floor euphoria.

Waveform 03 (5:43)
Waveform 04 (5:46)
Review: There's seemingly no end to ASC's offerings to the drum & bass world and so it continues on this beautifully packaged black splattered yellow 10" from the Waveforms series. 'Waveform 03' is an airy jungle excursion with explosive amens set off against vast expanses of pads, while 'Waveform 04' locks into a sleeker, techier approach where the icy atmospherics have more space to stretch out. No one is even close to the quality and quantity of ASC, and this is yet another essential addition to his huge legacy.

Waveform 01 (6:07)
Waveform 02 (5:51)
Review: ASC's Waveforms series is yet another outlet for one of the most prolific producers in any genre you care to mention. For the completists it's hard work keeping up, but how are you going to argue with tracks as fire as these? 'Waveform 01' has a lighter feel thanks to the aqueous synth tones slipping and sliding around the crisp breaks, but it still kicks off in earnest when the amens come knocking. 'Waveform 02' is a more heads down affair, but as always ASC creates scintillating atmospheres around the drums which make the listening experience that much deeper.

Review: Vinyl only and lucky if we see one release a year; Moonshine's Dubwise Revolution always keeps us keen with their white label 10s. This is no exception. Crafted by an anonymous source, these spicy versions join the dots in a contemporary, high grade way. Sleng tenging it out with plenty of molten low end, 'Garnedd' brings the soul while 'Ghetto Living' slugs it out with swagger. Grab it while you can.

Review: Get unstuck with these two delicious refixes from Unglued's debut 2021 album Interplanetary Radio as two of the most highly respected beat carvers apply their scalpels to one of Hospital's most exciting new-generation stars. The ravey 'Total XTC' is perfect fodder for Exit's Fixate as he winds up the 4x4s and laces it with his own special hardcore essence. The super sweet soul of 'Way Back When' is also a perfect fit for its remixer as Halogenix brings a whole new hazy shade to the dreamy vibes. Far out.

Earshots (3:07)
Earshots (extended mix) (4:32)
Review: Sir Hiss and 4AM Kru set up a dialogue between London and Bristol, a stellar dialectic giving rise to a supreme form of lo-fi jungle. 'Earshots' samples a bhangra vocal cry, mixing it up with the scratchy factory movements of cut-throat jungular breaks. It marks a break from Sir Hiss' usual grime parlance, and adds to a refreshingly-named new series handled by their parent label Embrace The Real, called 'No More Mailouts', an explicit callout of PR in the electronic music industry which aims to lead by example. Power to em.

Zatoichi's Troubles (6:06)
Review: The latest drop in the Mysticisms Dubplate series welcomes back Persian for another round of reggae-inspired electronics. Once again the artist draws from across a spectrum of bass, digidub and breaks and also throws some jungle into the melting pot. Opener 'Survival Dub' is powered by classic breakbeats and great mic work that is sure to liven up any party. 'Smoke Mari' then slows it down to a fat dub with a vocal sample from a well-known smoker's anthem with plenty of mind-melting effects and stepping rhythms. On the flipside is 'There Is No Love' with a prime junglist drop and last of all comes 'Zatoichi's Troubles' which has devastating bass.

Skatterbox (6:06)
Review: Breakbeat maestro Hooverian Blur returns for Triple Menace, an EP which, as the title suggests, spans choppy breaks and dastardly bleeps-and-bloops for a 2HKO wielding a stylistic drum & bass greatsword. A singular 10" record houses these twin audio-imps, with the titular 'Triple Menace' occupying older-skool junglist territories, and the latter bringing things forward in time to a future-soundsy rave minimalizer.

Renegade Horns (Nookie remix) (6:35)
New Horizons (DJ Crystl remix) (8:32)
Review: Two of drum & bass' most rabid underdogs, Nookie and DJ Crystl, the latter returning only recently after a two decade hiatus - make a triumphant return to the foreground, joining Suburban Architecture in aid of the third edition of their Architecture Dubs series. A fresh fusion of old and new motifs, Nookie's remix of 'Renegade Horns' pays homage to a select juncture in the genre's evolution, recalling the era of "intelligent" drum & bass while nonetheless playing into the freshness and cleanliness that could only ever have surfaced after the 2010s. Crystl's version of 'New Horizons', meanwhile, is more refractive and dreamy, taking its required time to bask in its artisanal padwork, in contrast to its raw b-boy sample and frank Amen breaks.

The Cruel Sea (5:00)
Review: Now for something completely different! Forever ahead of the game, Hidden Agenda's role in leftfield jungle soul has been undeniable and hugely influential since the mid-90s and it's amazing to see Jason back now and on such a maverick edge. Both of these cuts hit with a unique vibe and flavour that's so refreshing to hear. 'Dust' is a psychedelic wonderland that slides along with shimmering layers of percussion, guitar and keys. 'Cruel Sea' takes things a little darker as an edgy, unpredictable drive takes the lead. Think Krust's recent work on Crosstown Rebels and you're on the right planet. AKO Beatz never miss a punch.

Rinsa (5:47)
Review: Bristol jungle lynchpin Dead Man's Chest is usually found steering the good ship Western Lore, but back in 2017 he did a series of drops for Ingredients billed as Trilogy Dubs. Originally available on the label's Bandcamp site, now the first volume is pressed up on 10" for some deck-based air time. 'Tears (Fantazia Version)' on the A-side leads with a sad-eyed r&b sample and some lingering piano, but when the drop comes its pure Reese power with a slant towards d&b rather than the jungle DMC's more commonly associated with. 'Rinsa' on the flip is a rowdy slice of Mentasm trickery - the perfect counterpoint to the lead track's solemn vibe.

Review: Deep Jungle have delivered once again as some seminal sounds from Lucky Spin have been unearthed and reissued. Destination 1995; a West Country trio named Orca are making their name for themselves in the jungle phenomenon. Featuring early sounds from Decoder (one half of the chart-topping Kosheen years later), each of these breakbeat bust-ups carries a certain air of Bristol grit and euphoric rave energy. 'Intellect' is all about the savage drum chops while 'Sample & Hold' goes in more for the deep swing. Timeless vibes. Have yourself a whale of a time. (Not sorry)

Kingz Of The Castle (5:05)
Review: What happens if you take a big vocal sample and drop it over a rinsing, old school jungle break beat? The first tune here, 'Opus III', that's what. It's a high energy affair that might well raise some eye brows given the vocal, but you can't help but admire it's all out joyousness and air of celebration. Flip it over and you'll find something just as divisive - another clattering jungle tune filled with kinetic kicks and flurries of snare, and once more a well-known vocal from Whamdo Project's 'Kings Of The Castle.'

The Upbeats feat Teknik - "More Than One"
Duo Infernale - "Feeling Blue"
Review: The global sound of the Archive series brings together new music out of Wellington, New Zealand and Berlin, Germany, with both production teams making there Soul:R debuts. The Upbeats are fast becoming one of d&b's top production teams. "More Than One" oozes class. Dreamy piano's float with energetic future beats and a gnarling bassline. For the melancholy crew "Feeling Blue" is a seriously clever blend of hard beats and delightfully interweaving piano strings and keys. Think Jazzanova on steroids. This is a class 10" in the true Soul:R tradition. Check the Factory Records inspired artwork!

Review: "Lowlife" is Marcus Intalex at is hypnotic best. With his sweeping future funk any listener will fall helpless into the groove. Even the stiffest of hips will sway and the most sceptical heads will nod along as the ravishing low-slung bass takes over. On the other side Soul:R debutantes The Invaderz deliver big time with the sublime "You Bring Me". The weighty mix of rough beats, shuddering bass and gorgeous vocals slide sweetly over a euphoric swirling background. "Archive/Two" was built for big sound systems and discerning listeners!

State Of Mind & Trei - "True Stories"
State Of Mind - "Lonely Planet"
Review: 'True Stories' saunters in with a displaced but familiar swagger, trademark beats roll into a plucked guitar funkism and the vocal
that drifts over the top subtly delivers the tracks title. The drop stutters to a peak and gives way to an almighty neuro bassgrind
that never becomes too overbearing but does the job extremely effectively. The result of this genius collaboration sits stylistically
somewhere between Ed Rush & Optical's classic 'Bacteria' and Noisia's 'Concussion'. Add a scuba diving second breakdown with
teeth, and you have a massive hit on New Zealand student radio, which has sat at number 3 on the national alternative chart.
'Lonely Planet' has a menacing tone which sets the pace for the sci-fi wind up with distant 'huh's' yelling at the quivering robotic vocal that
anchors the tune. Rolling drums pause for a moment to unleash the sub-heavy bassline accentuated by uneasy percussion and other
world mutterings and effects, while a distorted lead sparingly lifts the track as its bassline does all the work. Fans of the lads' 'Back to
The Jungle' will definitely be ready for a trip to the 'Lonely Planet'. Samurai Music is a label from New Zealand primarily focused on
providing a benchmark for New Zealand drum n bass producers, both new and old to aspire to. A&R'd by DJ Presha, expect the
cream of New Zealand's freshest talent to be providing beats for Samurai Music, to be released in unique art and packaging strictly on
10" vinyl. International guest releases are also planned on Samurai Music, the main criteria being an affinity with the New Zealand
scene and vibe. The first of these guests will be Mr Tom Withers aka Klute, who is a close friend of Aotearoa and its drum and bass
scene, and a regular visitor for the past 7 years. Watch for 4 more releases to follow in quick succession from Klute, Mosus, Trei &
Dose with many more to come.
