Review: Upront to juno ! In 2009, a group of seasoned funk and soul session musicians joined forces to record a rousing rhythm & blues-meets-funk cover version of Duffy's 2007 single "Mercy". Subsequently released on both Tri Sound and Acid Jazz, the track has become a must-have for soul DJs ever since.Sounding as though it might have been recorded in the late 60's it has a powerful funk driving backbeat ,thumping bass, soaring male soul vocal and screaming swirling hammond organ. Only 300 pressed. Don't sleep !

  1. All This Love That I'm Givin' (3:53)
  2. Maybe I'll Find Somebody New (3:25)
Review: For those of a certain age, Gwen McRae's "All This Love That I'm Givin" will always evoke memories of Cassius' French Touch classic "Feeling For You", which sampled it heavily. It remains a killer record in its' own right, though, as this timely reissue proves. Originally released in 1979, it sees McRae at her powerful best, delivering a potent message to an errant lover over a killer, low-slung disco-funk groove. It's one of the tracks that should really be in any discerning funk, soul or disco DJ's collection. Flip for original B-side "Maybe I'll Find Somebody New", a breezier chunk of laidback soul with a slightly Southern lilt. It's good, but pales into insignificance compared to the brilliant 'A' side.

  1. Marcia Maria - "Amigo Branco" (3:30)
  2. Simone - "Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser" (2:16)
Review: The latest volume in Mr Bongo's brilliant Brazil 45 series offers up a pair of MPB gems that have previously never featured on seven-inch before. Side A is all about Marcia Maria's 1978 cut "Amigo Branco", a disco-era interpretation of Djalma Dias' 1974 track "Nada Sei De Preconceito". Maria's cover is jaunty, colourful and ear-catching, pushing jaunty organs, sharp horns and spacey synth lines towards the ear alongside her passionate, full-throated lead vocal. Over on side B you'll find "Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser", an overlooked gem plucked from MPB artist Simone's self-titled 1973 debut LP. More rooted in samba, it's a lilting, string-laden chunk of emotional sweetness.

  1. 90% Of Me Is You (2:49)
  2. It's Worth The Hurt (2:17)
Review:

Another all-time classic from the extensive back catalog of the legendary Miami songstress Gwen McCrae.

"90% Of Me Is You" is instantly recognizable, it's been sampled countless of times by some of the most seminal Hip Hop artists ever (Large Professor, Jaylib, Mobb Deep & more) & is a bonafide "Rare Groove" sure-shot that never loses it's appeal & is always in demand with DJ's & producers. Perhaps it's the pairing of the languid guitar & strings, or Gwen's sultry vocals & that steady breakbeat that keeps people hooked some 40 years after it's original release? Whatever it is, it's classic material from start to finish!

Backed here with it's original b-side slow jam "It's Worth The Hurt" this super-rare 45 has been re-mastered, re-pressed & brought back for 2015's dance-floors in conjunction & with the permission of T.K. Disco / Henry Stone Music, Miami USA.

  1. Royal (2:33)
  2. Get What's Right (3:51)
Review: In our eyes, Children Of Zeus can do no wrong. Then again, they've yet to release a duff record, so it's hardly a controversial opinion. Their latest outing on First Word is another two-track gem. A-side "Royal" is particularly sumptuous, with the Manchester duo delivering a soul slow jam so deep, sugary and musically rich that you might want to take it home to meet your parents right away. Honestly, it's seriously seductive. Flipside "Get What's Right" is a little more hip-hop flavoured (check the crunchy breaks) but every bit as smooth and soulful, with the pair's vocals riding atop a suitably twinkly, late-night musical soundscape.

  1. Keep It Up (4:10)
  2. The Silence That You Keep (3:28)
Review:

Milton Wright's perfect deep Soul classic "Keep It Up" has always been a top shelf record, everything about it is almost flawless! Whether it's Milton's silky vocal delivery, the incessant guitar driven back beat or the total space Funk vibe of his omnipresent ARP-2600 synthesizer this record has it all. Originally released on TK Disco's more Soul and Funk orientated Alston label which was home to many legendary artists and records, this 1975 sunshine classic never fails to make people move. A classic rare groove indeed. "The Silence That You Keep" takes up side-B, a jazzy, flute driven love song that again features Milton's perfect voice and some fantastic arrangement. A real gem of a record, with the original 45 changing hands for over L100 a time in used condition.

This is the first time "Keep It Up" has been re-issued in it's original 45 rpm format with the original Alston label artwork. It's been re-mastered, re-pressed and made available again with the permission of TK Disco / Alston Records, Miami Florida, USA.

Review: Upfront to Juno ! New Mukatsuku 45 from America Mid West with two versions of ''Pain'' with The Boys In The Band version never seeing a commercial vinyl release and in our opinion far superior ! Little Flint's wobby intro original version sells upwards of 400 GBP when you can find a clean copy. Hand-numbered to 500 units one off limited pressing.Strictly no repress

Wayne Perry & Randy Mcnutt decided to record a version of Pain in a power Soul Rock mode which were all the range in Cincinnati, Ohio at the time of the recording around 1973.The Boys In The Band version features Wayne singing solo but was never released. What was released was the Little Flint version (a name that Wayne had chosen as an alto ego guise ) and assisted with that version by an uncredited vocalist from Alaska singing live singing on top of the same rhythm track. Other band members included Roger 'Jellyroll' Troy on bass,Jerry Love on drums,Gary Boston on guitar,Craig Shenafield & Terry Burnside on brass (all five had played on sessions/backed James Brown at certain points in their careers) plus the young B-3 Organist Terry Hoskins who was just 17 at the time.DJ support from The Allergies so far..

Review: "Cramp Your Style" by All The People surely belongs among the canon of all time funk standards, sampled aplenty over the years, included on numerous compilations as well as being the recipient of cover versions from Breakestra and Killer Meters. Originally issued on the Blue Candle label back in 1972, a newly remastered edition of that 7" is now available for any funkateers out there without the 45 in their collections already. Review: Since signing to Hospital in 2018, Degs has been on a quick train to the top. This long-awaited debut album is likely to increase the hype surrounding him. It's a hugely vibrant affair in which he adds his own vocals to tracks he wrote and produced, sometimes in collaboration with an all-star cast of guest artists (think S.P.Y, Logistics, Unglued and LSB for starters). There's much to enjoy throughout the hot-stepping, soul-fired set, with highlights including the fizzing D&B soul of opener "Driving Under Lights", the downtempo beauty of "4 Days", the soaring brilliance of "Colour My Soul", the floor-friendly hustle of previous single (and Adamski/Seal cover) "Killer", and the synth-sporting punchiness of closing cut "Pamoja Forever".

Review: Given the deep, dreamy and luscious sound of his productions, it's perhaps unsurprising that Brawther has been a regular contributor to Chez Damier and Ron Trent's Balance imprint. As Endless neatly proves, the Parisian producer has provided the label with some tremendous music since 2009, much of which could pass as authentic Damier material. The latter makes an appearance on the wonderful title track, but his trademark sound - fluid, quietly soulful, bumpin', hazy and dancefloor friendly - can be heard throughout this essential retrospective. Naturally, there's more than a little Trent flavour to some of the cuts, too - in particular the enveloping pads and twinkling pianos of "VXVXVX" - making this a sublime collection of sumptuous, ultra-deep house.

Review: The second single to be taken from the forthcoming album by The Lovely Eggs, 'I Am A Moron', finally sees the light of day, confirming that the long player, when it gets here, is likely to be a pithy and rather cutting take on the world as it is today, or at least society as we have now made it. An all-consuming, unrelenting system that will eventually eat itself up. It ends with a belch, not a whimper or a roar, then. One of the most unique aspects of the Eggs is their staunch independence, refusing to adhere to the rules of management, labels, publicists and so forth. This has always been reflected in their sounds, and on 'Still Second Rate' things are no different. You can easily hear muscular psychedelia, alt pop and avant-electronic-punk elements, but the combination of those things is entirely fresh, and unarguably vital.

Review: Schmorgasbord Records continues to examine the creative results of collaborative experimentation within contemporary electronic music, following releases from Appleblim & October, Spatial & S-Max, Al Tourettes & Paradroid and Bass Clef & Frak.

Pev is one of the leading lights of the fertile Bristol music scene, responsible for the hugely influential Punch Drunk and Livity Sound labels, as well as numerous releases on Tectonic, Skull Disco, Hessle Audio and The Trilogy Tapes.

Steevio is the co-founder of Mindtours Records and the Freerotation electronic music festival. His live improvised techno performances on modular synthesisers have been witnessed in Berghain in Berlin, Concrete in Paris, Corsica Studios in London and many more besides.

The two artists created original tracks and then remixed / reinterpreted each others work resulting in truly unique tracks neither artist would have conjured up otherwise.

Now the duo are back with more goodies from their Studio OST project, and once again the fusion between gossamer threads of melody and delicately crafted machine rhythms is evident throughout this 12". "Eventide" comes as a full blown track and a sumptuous beatless version, while "Ascension" has a dubby original and useful drums-only cut, making this record both functional and an absolute delight to listen to.

Review: New label LDF clearly understands the need to make a big first impression, because this soul-flecked single from Angel-A and producer Rahaan - one of Chicago's true underground heroes - is a very impressive debut. Rahaan's A-side "Original Mix" is rhythmically tough and crunchy - think weighty drum machine kicks and snares - but also warm and woozy, with Angel-A's superb vocal rising above rich electric piano chords and jazzy synthesizer flourishes. Over on side B Karizma takes over, offering up a "Kaytronik Truth Dub" that wraps hypnotic, mangled electric piano notes, analogue bass and tech-tinged flourishes around a wonderfully locked-in but percussively lively rhythm track. It's very different to the original but exceptionally deep and floor-friendly.

Here the Rotterdam duo offers up their first full EP, which also doubles as the debut release on Dutch imprint Vault Wax. There's plenty to tingle the senses from the word go, with opener "Muted Chaos" offering a clandestine mixture of chunky electro beats, buzzing riffs, intergalactic electronic pulses and winding acid lines. The fun doesn't stop there though, with the acid-fired ghetto-house bounce of "Get That Booty" and the deep techno dreaminess of closing cut "Stairway" also hitting impressive heights.

"The Watcher" is the debut EP from 21 year-old New Zealander Arjuna Oakes, a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, producer and vocalist who's happy to forge his own path through the worlds of jazz-funk, soul and reggae. It's the kind of warm, woozy and effortlessly soulful musical fusion that has long been associated with artists from New Zealand, though it's fair to say that Oakes does it better than most. In fact, as debuts go it's an absolute stunner.

  2. 14KT - "The Power Of Same" (feat Muhsinah - Tall Black Guy remix) (4:01)
Review: First Word's latest must-have 12" sees label regulars Tall Black Guy (AKA hip-hop beat-maker Terrel Wallace) and self-proclaimed "chop artist" 14KT (real name Kendall Tucker) remix each other's tracks. The latter steps up first to re-configure Wallace's Moonchild collaboration "I Will Never Know" as a folksy, bass-heavy chunk of slipped soul/jazz fusion dripping with folksy acoustic guitars and ear-catching vocals. Wallace repays the compliment on the flip, delivering a warm, crispy and R&B-influenced hip-hop soul revision of recent single "The Power Of Same", featuring the seductive vocals of Muhsinah. If soul, jazz and hip-hop all float your boat, this should be an essential purchase.

Review: Some 18 months after it appeared on Amp Fiddler's ace "Amp Dog Knights" LP, "Keep Coming" is given the remix treatment by a quartet of hugely talented producers. The headline rework comes from Ninja Tune signee Jayda G, whose effortlessly soulful version not only makes great use of the Detroit veteran's brilliant vocals and keys, but also flits between smoky deep house and sweaty, percussive madness. Elsewhere, Jahn Cloud and Meftah offer up some sweet post R&B beats, Julian Dyne re-casts it as a Latin-tinged chunk of beatdown brilliance and Brenk Sinatra does his best impression of Motor City beat-makers Platinum Pied Pipers.

  2. Dynamic B-Boy (3:05)
Review: Stanky sickness from the Brizzle's double M funk machine, Mako & Mr Bristow return with the fifth instalment of their deeply dug (and consistently sold out) Stank Soul Edits series. For this edition we're treated to a heavy weave of breaks and dusty grooves on "Funky Diggin'" and something a little more cosmic and psychedelic on the B with "Dynamic B-Boy". Stick it to the man and get busy on the dancefloor.

Review: Dutch producer Larry De Kat has been spotted delivering an album to Lazare Hoche and sliding his wares onto SlapFunk and Dungeon Meat alike, but his Katnip label it the one to watch for some of his most personal wares. This new release finds him purring his way through downtempo, soul-inflected selections that open out a whole new dimension to this talented, versatile producer. Juno's vocals are the icing on a particularly funky cake on "Do For Love", while "So Damn Fine" is an instrumental beat worthy of D'Angelo (sadly not included). The jazzy licks pour out of this release like honey - Larry De Kat just upped his game yet again and we strongly advise you to take heed.

Peaks Remixes Two (140 gram vinyl 12")

Balearic/Downtempo
  1. To The Stars (Rollmottle remix)
  2. Mercury Ripples (Die Wilde Jagd remix)
  3. Alpha Moon (Merrick Adams remix)
  4. Nexus Vox (Cass version part I & II)
Review: Emotional Response reach out to another fine selection of sonic voyagers to take Brain Machine's excellent Peaks LP to task, leading in with the warm discoid undulations of Rollmottle who refigures "To The Stars" as a gentle, groovy warm-up joint. Die Wilde Jagd takes on "Mercury Ripples" and fashion a bombastic breaks jam out of it, and Merrick Adams pushes "Alpha Moon" into a curious but ultimately cosmic space somewhere beyond the titular lunar body. Cass takes the prize with the bittersweet synth tones that course through the two-part remix of "Nexus Vox".

  1. Secret Garden
  2. Together
  3. Endorphins
  4. Insomnia
Review: Ukranian producer SE62 has been ducking in and out of the limelight since 2009, notching up impressive releases on labels like My Love Is Underground and Home Taping Is Killing Music. Now he returns to deliver the second release on Rhythm N Vibe, and does so in style. There's a tripped-out, heady atmosphere to "Secret Garden" that would sound incredible on a Sunday session at Panoramabar, while "Together" is a much rawer proposition. "Endorphins" is a curveball of a track, all uptempo stomp and off the wall samples, and "Insomnia" finishes the EP off with another switch up. The crafty breakstep flex of the drums and sparse atmosphere make for a cool and deadly variation to the rest of the EP.

Isotelus Rex (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: GROW 006. Rel: 02 Mar 15
Minimal House/Tech House
  1. Isotelus Rex (original mix)
  2. Isotelus Rex (Daze Maxim remix)
  3. Proetida (original mix)
Review: Grow returns with the record Isotelus Rex by Denis Kaznacheev, complete with a remix by Daze Maxim. The title track Isotelus Rex, a 14 minute work, true to grow's eccentric nature, a track at once playful and deeply neurally stimulating, sure to shake one's body and intrigue one's mind. Wonderful decaying tones, subtly jazzy, intricate electronic communications interrelate over an irresistible bass and percussive performance, a groove which will make your swing. B1 is Daze Maxim's remix, with a more ethereal approach to Isotelus Rex, it begins through a beautiful synth. Then grows a fast and intricate bass arrangement, providing a confidently vibed way though the cosmic landscape, also another great track for the dance floor, as the same physical swing as in original is felt strong. B2 Proetida, the second original work by Denis Kaznacheev of the release, is of raw, almost rude, attitude, a strong bass descends in steps, a determined momentum, the driving force of an industrious process.

Funk/Reediciones
  1. Bongo Rock
  2. Apache
Review: Two seminal cover versions from the funkiest band who never really existed, Viner's legacy continues to live large through samples and well-dug selections. You already know these percussive puppies inside out, but just in case... "Bongo Rock" takes Preston Epps 12-bar blues classic into deep funk territory, complete with an array of trumpets that nod dutifully at the Beatles circa Sgt Pepper. Meanwhile on the B we find "Apache", one of the most sampled records of all time. The fact it's delivered on the mighty Mr Bongo is also a very nice touch. An essential repress.

Orbit Dub (limited 7" in screen-printed sleeve)
Cat: ZAMZAM 76. Rel: 13 Feb 20
Deep Dubstep
  1. Orbit Dub (4:11)
  2. Theory Dub (4:14)
Review: Since launching in 2014, Portland's ZamZam Sounds imprint has offered up a string of beautifully packaged seven-inch singles from a mixture of big hitters and rising stars from the global bass music scene. Their latest missive comes from Dayzero, a Japanese dubstep producer best known for his outings on Wheel & Deal, Sentry and, most recently, Vomitspit. The two tracks here are weighty, intergalactic and otherworldly, mixing dub style rhythms with the kind of angular, razor-sharp sub-bass motifs more often associated with dancefloor dubstep. Both cuts are quality, though it's rolling A-side "Orbit Dub" - all lolloping dub beats, wobble bass, metallic effects and paranoid aural textures - that really stands out.

Roots/Lovers Rock
  1. Ric Carbi & Dohlance - "Smoking The Highest" (3:44)
  2. Salute - "Smoking Riddim" (4:21)
Review: This is a classic riddim from the hard working folk at Room In The Sky with a new vocal on top, available for the first time on vinyl. Produced by Lewis M, lead tune 'Smoking The Highest' teases and toys with you until it eventually drops into a big, happy, horn lead groove. The vocals are clean and crisp on top, paying love and respect to the smoke as the drums wiggle and horns continue to reach for the skies. Salute takes care of the remix on the flip and ups the ante, with fat bottomed bass and a more noodling lead all vying for your attention.

  2. I Have Been Waiting For You (version) (3:37)
  3. I Have Been Waiting For You (DJ Duckcomb Digimix) (7:19)
Review: Emotional Rescue serve up a balmy curveball cut perfect for the summer months. Glen Ricks "I've Been Waiting For You" was originally released back in 1983 on the highly collectible Seraff label and recently reissued by the label (ERC081). Here, as an accompanying release to that boogie version is a 1990 digital rework for the Xterminator label. With a distinctive swung riddim and smoothly incorporated dubbed out chords, Ricks' vocal channels the most soulful Jamaican deliveries, sealing the deal on this evergreen jam that sounds great in original and version forms. DJ Duckcomb steps up with a tender "Digimix" that retains the dusty crunch of the original with just a little extra bite in the beats.

Minimal House/Tech House
  1. Mystery Falls
  2. Spooked
Review: In classic Baby Ford style the A-side opens with "Mystery Falls" a deep melodic housey workout with shuffling percussion and sublime top line strings.
Meanwhile on the B-side, shaker hustlin' "Spooked" conjures up a more stripped down moody grooving chordal affair.
Both tracks cut at 45rpm for maximum quality and effect on the floor.
