Lupita (7") (1 per customer)

  1. Lupita (3:36)
  2. Lupita (Bosq rework) (4:24)
Review: Those who love classic Afro-Latin music should already know "Lupita", one of the standout tunes from the sole 1971 album by Belgian composer Nico Gomez (real name Joseph van het Groenewoud) and his Afro-Percussion Inc backing band. That album was reissued a few years back by Mr Bongo; here 'Lupita' is given a rare airing on 7" single by Matasuna. This time round, the deliciously percussive mambo workout - all punchy horns, wild organs and vocal breakdowns - comes backed by a fresh remix courtesy of Bosq. This version is arguably even better, with Bosq wisely choosing to focus on the drums, horns, bass and organs for added dancefloor pleasure.

  1. Atlas (7:24)
Review: Belfast boys Bicep have been surprisingly quiet of late, with this single-sided salvo marking their first new music since 2018. Apparently inspired by their globe-trotting DJ experiences of the past couple of years, the track is as vibrant, colourful and emotive as you'd expect, with the Northern Irish duo layering glistening, ear-catching synthesizer lead lines, drifting vocal samples, sunrise-ready pads and tweaked electronics atop a loose-limbed, breakbeat-influenced rhythm and rumbling bass. It's perhaps not as in-your-face as some of their releases, but it certainly boasts great dancefloor weight, as well as a blend of musical elements that tends towards the loved-up and glassy-eyed.

  1. Zwango Zop (Artwork edit) (10:52)
Review: Like many Australian artists, Melbourne's Mildlife are keen to raise money for the Bushfire Relief Fund. To do that, they've decided to offer up this surprise Artwork re-edit of 2018 album track "Zwango Zop" and donate all sales revenue to the appeal. While the band's original version is a deep and groovy chunk of spaced-out disco, Artwork's version is a far more forthright, peak-time ready affair. He's beefed up the beats a little, pitched up the band's fine instrumentation and added some densely layered new synth sounds of his own. The result is an intergalactic disco workout straight from the top drawer that could well become one of the underground hits of the summer.

  1. Come Together (7:29)
  2. Omnibus (7:20)
Review: It's been 10 years since Henrik Schwarz last graced Innervisions with his widescreen take on dance music, and he's returning to his old stomping ground with the kind of cinematic strokes we'd expect from both artist and label. The drama is palpable at every turn in "Come Together", but it's especially driven by the bold arrangements of choral voices striking a tone somewhere between doomsday and the second coming. "Omnibus" is a strikingly beautiful big room brooder led by plaintive lead lines and a forthright sense of urgency, unfurling further musical figures at every 16 bars and plotting a course for the stars in the process.

  3. Reedale Rise - "Lux" (5:51)
  4. Derek Carr - "The Gap" (6:22)
Review: 20/20 Vision have firmly gaffa taped their flag to the electro antennae with "Exit Planet Earth", a new compilation series celebrating veterans and newcomers in the business of tweaked out machine funk. The Hacker is up first with "Positif/Negatif", a rubbery, FX-laden workout with plenty of uneasy space around the core rhythm section. 214 follows up with the decidedly creepy, sound design-embellished "Testy Robot". On the flip Reedale Rise brings something a bit livelier with the plush synth flex pinging through "Lux". Derek Carr completes the set with "The Gap", a lush slice of melancholic machine dreaming for mellower moments.

  1. Groove It To Your Body (vocal) (7:12)
  2. Groove It To Your Body (instrumental) (6:31)
Review: It would be fair to say that Michael Wilson's "Groove It To Your Body" is not one of the most celebrated tracks in the Prelude Records catalogue. It's still a killer cut, though, as this reissue proves. Reprising the same running order as the original 1982 12", which was mixed by Prelude's regular desk-man Francois Kevorkian, it kicks off with a full vocal version that layers Wilson's impassioned singing, harps and reverb-laden sax lines over a hybrid disco-funk/electrofunk groove. Full of crunchy Clavinet lines, Bohannon-style guitar riffs and bulging basslines, it's a track full of fine musical details that still packs serious dancefloor punch. Over on side B you'll find Kevorkian's delay-laden Instrumental mix, which naturally flits between groove-based sections and delightfully over the top musical wig-outs.

  2. Let Go (feat Francesco Fratini - Reekee Trumpet mix) (7:41)
  3. Let Go (Reekee alternate version) (6:20)
Review: For the latest missive on his on-point Wrong Notes label, boss man Reekee has temped Angela Tarrant AKA Angel-A back to the label following her fine lead vocal on Vick Lavender's 2019 gem "Cosmic Love". "Let Go" is an effortlessly soulful number, with Kai Alce's incredible A-side version, which features some additional synth solos and keys by regular collaborator Chris Irvine, delivering the kind of deep, seductive and rolling workout that should appeal to DJs and dancers beyond the soulful house scene. Reekee takes over on the flip, firstly offering up a jazz-funk-fired broken beat "Trumpet Mix" (it includes some fine trumpet solos from pal Francesco Fratini) before delivering a deep, spacey and woozy deep house take (the "Alternate Version").

Review: The Aussies seem to be going gaga for Rominimal sounds at the moment, particularly on the sunny shores of Sydney. First was the Lokomotiv label and now Unic, who are into their fourth release and it's by Bucharest hero Vlad Arapasu. Formerly one half of Dubsons, he's had a slew of killer releases in recent times for the likes of Eastenderz, Atipic and Subtil. "Vesica Piscis EP" features three typically rolling and hypnotic cuts aimed squarely at main room dancefloors: from the heady and bass-driven banger of the title track on the A side which makes for a sturdy DJ tool across its glorious 10 minute duration. On the flip, it's all about getting weird and trippy at the afterhours on the disorienting "Witchy Ci" while "Colour Map" goes down a lean and dubby route.

Review: We're not quite sure what "Purplewave" is, though by the sounds of this EP from electro and techno veteran Rico Casazza it's something we like. The title track, which kicks of the EP in style, is a curious but inspired blend of electro rhythms played on live drums, 1980s alt-rock guitar solos, druggy Italo-disco/new wave style arpeggio bass and alien-sounding electronic melodies. On side B it gets the remix treatment, with Silicon Scally (AKA British electro stalwart Carl Finlow) re-inventing it as a shimmering slice of deep space electro and No Moon offering up a trippy, chugging and dreamy version for late nights and early mornings. Elsewhere on the EP, Casazza delves in to dark electro waters on "Rainmaker" and adds acid to his guitar-flecked template on "Enada Mello".

There's much to enjoy from start to finish, from the fizzing dancefloor jazz rush of "Logan's Run" and the synth-sporting Afro-jazz/jazz-funk fusion of "Candy Flip", to the bubbly boogie-jazz positivity of "River Run Deep" and the hazy house warmth of "Still Swag", a kind of update of the mid 1990s St Germain sound that's worth the entrance fee on its own.

  3. Stairway 3000 (7:25)
Review: "For Every Forever", Italian twosome Mathame's first EP of 2020, is a quietly uplifting affair. It begins with the confident and ear-catching title track, with the pair's heartfelt, indie-style vocals weave in and out of stunning strings, hybrid techno/progressive house drums and occasional nods towards emotive progressive trance territory. The latter influence becomes more obvious on the accompanying "Dub" mix, where a jaunty electronic riff takes centre stage rather than the strings or their eyes-closed vocals. The EP's bonus track, "Stairway 3000", is arguably even closer to straight-up trance, with synthesized steel drum melodies and sustained chords soaring above tribal style techno beats and a rumbling bassline.

  4. Does It Make You Feel Good? (CC DISCO vs DJ Boring Ministry Of dub remix) (6:53)
Review: Last year, Confidence Man returned to action with a single that asked a simple question: "does it make you feel good?" The answer, of course, was yes, and it would be fair to say that this new set of remixes is equally positive in tone. Greg Wilson and Che Wilson handle side A, successfully re-imagining the track as a warm, dreamy and bass-heavy chunk of crunchy breakbeat house powered forward by a classic hip-house break. The mix is available in both vocal and instrumental variations, with the former arguably being the more impactful of the two. Over on side B, Mind Enterprises delivers a thumping, Italo-disco style take, while CC Disco and DJ Boring join forces on a chunky, forthright house mix that draws inspiration from 1990s US garage dubs.

To celebrate, he's releasing a celebratory compilation and two sampler EPs. This first 12" begins with some inspired broken beat/Nu Groove style deep house fusion from the ever-impressive Yu Su, before moving through ghostly techno (the fizzing beats and yearning chords of Katerina's "Bird People") and manic, metallic and industrial-tinged dancefloor madness courtesy of Lock Eyes ("Inner Conspiracy"). Valesuchi offers up the dense industrial/tribal fusion of "30" - all heavy Test Department beats and woozy electronic noises, while "Dawit" invites us to the glassy eyed, futurist deep house paradise that is "Level 7".

Review: Having set our world alight with his third Ilian Tape 12", 2012, back in the spring, Munich man Skee Mask delivers another essential collection of loose-limbed, broken techno workouts. Typically, he's on point from the word go, enveloping swinging, off-kilter techno breakbeats with swirling chords and cascading melodies on brilliant opener "Inti". His love of African-influenced polyrhythms is explored further on the ghostly, percussion-rich club cut "Kappelberg Chant" (which, incidentally, makes great use of choral chants), while "Routine" is a warm, loved-up and evocative tribute to rave-era British breakbeat-house. His debt to British dance music's formative years also comes to the fore on killer proto-jungle jam "Skreet Lvl Dub".

Review: Having spent much of last year offering up collaborative EPs made in cahoots with regular studio buddy Jenson Interceptor, Assembler Code returns to solo action via a rock solid collection of cuts on Censor. The producer gets to the point straight away on "Monochrome", a dark, pounding and forthright chunk of intergalactic electro full of sweaty beats, bleeping melodies and raging bass. "Perimeter Inspection" is a more spaced-out but no less percussively punchy affair, while "Generator" is a high-octane romp that sounds like a lo-fi techno enthusiast's take on Aux 88. Closing cut "Lateral Transfer" takes a similar sonic approach, albeit at a slower tempo and with even more electronic fuzz.

Review: Thundercat's last album, 2017's "Drunk", is undeniably one of the greatest full-lengths of the past few years - a dizzyingly varied and mind-altering affair that mixed and matched styles to create thrilling new fusions of past and present sounds. He's at it again on this delayed follow-up "It Is What It Is", which was co-produced by Flying Lotus and includes an impressive cast-list of guests and collaborators (think Kamasi Washington, Ty Dolla Sign, Steve Arrington, BADBADNOTGOOD, Lil B and Louis Cole for starters). Musically it's impossible to pigeonhole - think rubbery 80s funk meets spiritual jazz meets reggae meets hip-hop meets experimental beats meets... you get the idea - and that makes for inspiring listening. Whether it's quite as good as "Drunk" is debatable, but it's certainly superb.

There's much to set the pulse racing on this four-tracker too, from the rushing, trance-influenced melodic positivity of breakbeat wiggler "Blissful Lie" (which, incidentally, lifts the same Aisha sample as the Orb's "Blue Room"), to the IDM/braindance fusion of "Psychiflux" and ultra-deep, spaced-out brilliance of "Cloud Walker", via the madcap insanity of "Weightless", which flips from a jazz-flecked ambient soundscape to a maniacal braindance stomper midway through.

Review: More dusty-fingered funk and reissue fun from DJ Fryer's prolific Athens of the North imprint. As usual, these tracks are pretty darn obscure; they both dropped on the Split Decision Band's 1978 debut on the obscure Network Records imprint. "Watchin' Out" is a tight-but-loose chunk of hazy disco-era funk with a sturdy backbeat and particularly rousing horns. It will slip into both funk and disco sets with ease. Flipside "Dazed" is altogether slower, with sparser production emphasizing the quality of the parping, razor-sharp horns. It's a superb alternative to the equally admirable A-side. Another winner from Athens of the North.

They layer up jazz-funk drums and synths into lively arrangements that are topped with sick verses from the master and plenty of James Brown ad libs also colour the groove. It's a high energy party starter, but if you need something a little less busy, the instrumental on the flip has you covered with its big horns and sax lines getting hands in the air.

Review: Given that Gang Starr recently reformed and jazz is now all the rage, it seems fitting that Mr Bongo has decided to reissue the rare 7" version of the group's 1990 masterpiece "Jazz Thing". It's a wholehearted tribute to the greats of jazz - and the role jazz records have in hip-hop's sample culture - that comes in two distinctively different mixes. On the A-side you'll find the "Video Mix", a bouncy and suitably jazzy DJ Premier production that layers Guru's fine rap flows above loose-limbed drums, smoky horn samples and his own super-tight scratches. Turn to side B for the "Movie Mix" - so-called because it was created for a Spike Lee flick - where Guru's vocal rides improvised horns and an entirely different beat crafted from Kool & The Gang samples.

Review: Alex Attias' Visions Inc imprint has decided to launch a new multi-artist EP series. Happily, the first "Phase" in the "Evolution" series - they've promised three more this year - delivers a suitably strong start. Patrice Scott sets a high benchmark with opener "Rain Dance", a wonderfully warm fusion of elastic deep house beats, spacey electronic motifs and tactile Rhodes chords, before Kai Alce breaks up the beats a little on his effortlessly soulful, jazz-funk influenced revision of "Stay My Way" by Kemetic Just presents Justone. Hanna's flipside opener "Heist" is suitably deep, starry, groovy and soulful, while Reekee's "Let It Make" is a musically rich affair full of jazz-funk bass, fizzing synths, far-sighted chords and bustling beats that sit somewhere between broken beat and breakbeat house.

The shadowy CCCP Edits series, which here makes its bow, promises to set the record straight. There's plenty to set the pulse racing, from the bubbly acid bass, bustling funk breaks and hip-house breaks of "Malodym" and "Ya Zdes" (the latter with added deep house drowsiness and Balearic intent), to the spoken male vocals, high-tempo electro beats and lo-fi guitars of "Knopochki". Best of all though is closing cut "Astrid", which isn't really Russian at all, but rather an extra-percussive, bass heavy samba-house rework of an old Astrud Gilberto track. We'll forgive them though as it's really rather good.

  2. SoulBrigada - "Gonna Do" (5:55)
  3. The Funk District - "Anywhere You Like" (6:20)
  4. DJ Rocca - "Da Lion Groove" (6:52)
Review: It would be fair to say that this second part of the third instalment in Samosa's "Funk Purpose" series includes re-edits and sneaky remixes by some of the biggest hitters in the re-edit and nu-disco scenes. GAMM and Glitterbox regular Moplen leads the charge and in the process delivers a suitably sweaty, percussive and breathless peak-time disco-funk workout called "Ain't No Dub About It". Italian veteran DJ Rocca also impresses with another disco-funk rework, "Da Lion Groove", which successfully rearranges a heavyweight, horn-sporting affair previously re-edited by the Unabombers way back in the early 2000s. Elsewhere, SoulBrigada's "Gonna Do" is a relaxed and loved-up mid-tempo tweak of a saucer-eyed disco number, while the Funk District's "Anywhere You Like" is a tooled-up house revision of a punchy Blaxploitation-era number.

Soul
  1. I Love You (3:02)
  2. What's Going On (4:37)
Review: One of America's undisputed kings of soul and songwriting Master Weldon gets an AOTN celebration of the highest order as his 1976 classic "I Love You" (written with and featuring Don Blackman) gets a welcome revisit. An ultimately dreamy number, file it alongside Faze O's "Riding High" for the quintessential end-of-night smooch sound. If that's not quite enough, the B is a delicate-yet-rich instrumental cover of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On?" Stunning. There's really nothing not to like about this.

  1. Let's Ride (Jim Sharp edit)
  2. God Lives Through A Southern Gul (Jim Sharp edit)
Review: When it comes to DJ-friendly reworks, re-edits and mash-ups, few producers can boast quite as strong a track record as Jim Sharp. Here he proves our point with another pair of certified dancefloor heaters. On the A-side he takes his scalpel to Q-Tip's typically jazzy and bass-heavy 1999 hip-hop cut "Ride", adding a little more grunt to the bass and beats whilst retaining the essence of the Tribe Called Quest man's superb original version. On the flip he delivers a radically different revision of Rahzel's "Southern Girl", placing Erykah Badu's superb lead vocal atop an entirely different Tribe Called Quest beat. It turns it into a dusty, jazzy, head-nodding treat.

  1. Felony (3:18)
  2. Rile 'Em Up (feat Andy Cooper & Marietta Smith) (3:29)
Review: The Allergies first double A-side of the year is so strong, we reckon it may well be one of their best singles to date. A-side "Felony" is particularly potent: a hybrid Northern/Southern Soul stomper rich in crunchy drums, heavy bass, punchy horns and heart-aching vocal samples lifted from (we think) an obscure soul record. The production is formidably fuzzy, making it sound like something recorded in Detroit or Memphis in the 1960s rather than cooked up in their studio in 2019. Flipside "Rile 'Em Up" is similarly weighty, though this time they're off on a Latin funk tip with a little help from regular rapper Andy Cooper, soul-stress Marietta Smith, saxophonist Mr Woodnote and a handful of killer boogaloo samples.

  1. Love Directions (10:58)
  2. Love Jelly (6:58)
Review: Some two years after their last outing on Love Circle, Gerry Rooney and Joel Martin bring their quirky - and, let's face it, on-point - Velvet Season & The Hearts of Gold project back to Resista for more dusty-fingered re-edit adventures. On the A-side they take their scalpels to a groovy slab of string-laden disco-soul rich in twinkling electric piano solos, hazy vocals ("move in all directions, come on follow me"), sharp strings and tactile grooves. Flipside "Love Jelly" is arguably even better, with the experienced twosome having their wicked way with a bustling chunk of trumpet and Hammond organ-laden jazz-funk. The track's drum breaks and yearning chords are particularly alluring, making it a toe-tapping, hip-wiggling treat.

  1. The Upsetters - "Popcorn" (2:08)
  2. Dave Barker & The Upsetters - "Tight Spot" (2:41)
Review: For the second salvo in their "loud cut series", the Harlem Shuffle label has raided the vaults of Lee 'Scratch' Perry's legendary studio band, "The Upsetters". On the A-side you'll find "Popcorn" from 1970's "Eastwood Rides Again" album, a hard-edged, Ska-era rhythm & blues rump-shaker that sounds like a Jamaican take on James Brown. The flipside plays host to "Tight Spot", a dubbed-out reggae riddim over which tight saxophone riffs ascend impressively while deejay/singer/mic man attempts to get the dance going with some choice words and phrases. Like the A-side, it's a genuine dancefloor workout.

  1. Tony Alvon & Belairs - "Sexy Coffee Pot" (3:50)
  2. Stanley Turrentine - "Sister Sanctified" (4:03)
Review: We've run out of ways to describe the Breaks & Beats series of functional, floor-friendly re-edits, though by now everyone should know what to expect, namely light-touch reworks of classic funk and soul jams that extend the drum breaks for easier mixing. The series latest missive begins with a must-have rework of Tony Alvon & The Belairs' "Sexy Coffee Pot", a rare-as-hen's-teeth 1969 B-side that wraps rhythm and blues guitars and firing horn lines around one of the greatest drum breaks of all time. Over on side B it's all about Stanley Turrentine's 1972 jazz-funk gem "Sister Sanctified" (a track that has never before appeared on a seven-inch single, even unofficially) and its attractive fusion of snappy breakbeats, hazy sax riffs and liquid electric piano lines.

  1. Ja'Net Dubois - "Queen Of The Highway" (Kon edit) (4:30)
  2. Jady Kurrent - "Standing There" (3:29)
Review: Backatcha Records can usually be relied upon to bring the goods, and this double A-side "45" is no exception. Side A boasts a fresh KON re-edit of the title track from Ja'net Dubois' fiendishly hard-to-find 1980 album "Queen of the Highway", a set that was for some reason only ever released in Brazil. It's a wonderfully sunny, horn-toting chunk of orchestrated jazz-funk/boogie fusion with definite Latin influences which Kon has expertly rearranged while steering clear of needless 21st century production trickery. Over on side B you'll find a previously unreleased cut from the Jady Kurrent Band, an obscure, Cleveland-based outfit who released a sole single in 1987. "Standing There" is a sweet slice of deep, mid-80s boogie rich in slap bass, slick lead vocals and '80s soul synths.

Review: Kalita are excited to announce as their second release of 2020, the first ever official re-release of Cameroonian singer Jeannette N'Diaye's 1981 disco masterpiece 'Makom Ma Bobe', backed by an extended edit courtesy of Mendel! Originally appearing as one of three tracks on 'Mut'a Mbamba', her 1981 single released on Cameroonian producer Jojo Ngalle's record label Disques Jojo, 'Makom Ma Bobe' has recently exploded as one of the most sought-after Afro-disco records out there, with prices becoming ever exceedingly eye-watering and copies ever harder to find. Now Kalita come to the rescue, offering a loud and remastered 12" single for all. If that wasn't enough, the single is also backed by an extended edit of 'Makom Ma Bobe', courtesy of Netherlands-based DJ and producer Mendel! It's fast, it's euphoric and it's lasers are to die for. What more could you want?
