The Owl - "Groove Engine" (4:19)
C Da Afro - "I'm Gonna" (5:37)
Review: A tasty pair of chunky, beefed and dubbed up disco delights courtesy of the Cardiology label and every bit as likely to get the heart rate pumping as the name would suggest. The Owl's 'Groove Engine' steps up to the breach on the A-side, the slightly slower of the pair but blessed with a thumping framework of four-to- the-floor sturdiness on which funky keys and an almost Afro vibe are tastfully and decoratively hung. Flip track 'I'm Gonna' by C Da Afro is constructed from more archetypically traditional old skool disco ingredients, from the Sister Sledge-esque female vocals to the shooting, strings. There's a nice amount of dub behaviour via the desk, enough to elevate it into orbit but not so much that the song elements of the track are obscured. Nice work all round.

Review: Teddy Powell and Zee Desmondes are The Jack Moves, a contemporary disco and hip hop outfit who here link with unknown newbies The People Of Newark and Larry Hamm for this tidy new 7" on Star Creature. 'Horror Games' has a squelchy synth bass line that carries the loose drum work and bustling methane of background vocals and found sounds. A lead singer takes charge up top as various chatting crowds play out in the background. It's a busy tune that also comes as an instrumental for those who prefer the focus to be on the well crafted drums and bass.

Review: Al Kent takes on Japan’s answer to Vince Montana for another extended disco mix, with the emphasis - as always - on disco! Judging by the popularity of the pair’s last outing this release should once again please those DJs and music lovers with a penchant for the percussion, strings and traditional instrumentation that underpins the best disco music, bringing it up to date with one eye firmly on the past.

Review: Italian label Spittle have launched their new Dependance sub label to champion all things Italo, and they're following up on reissues of Zed's 'Plastic Love' and Trophy's 'Slow Flight' with this gem from fabled Italian DJ and producer Massimo Barsotti. Originally released in 1983 on Alexander Robotnick's Fuzz Dance label, we're absolutely treated to a peak Italo version of Led Zeppelin's 'Whole Lotta Love', which takes the original and runs with it in the best possible way. As well as the original we get the killer 'W.L.L.' version excursion on the flip, which rocks out just as hard.

Chaka's Night (Scrimshire re edit) (4:01)
Manhattan Night (Scrimshire remix) (4:19)
Review: Wah Wah 45s resident DJ Adam Scrimshire should be a familiar name to those who pay close to attention to the imprint's sneaky Wah Wah Dubplate series of bootleg 7" singles. This is his third outing for the hush-hush imprint, and sees him delivering two more soul-rich cut-ups capable of getting heads nodding and feet moving. A-side "Chaka's Night", a fearlessly loose cut-up of an old Chaka Khan gem that crafts a fluid, floor-friendly groove out of choppy, hip-hop style edits, is probably our pick, though the head-nodding jazz-funk bliss of flipside "Manhattan Night" is almost as good. Tasteful reworks for DJs who like their beats soulful; what's not to like?

Review: When co-founder Bernard Edwards passed away in 1996, it seemed unlikely that Nile Rodgers would have the stomach to record another Chic album. Yet here we are, two decades later, with Rodgers and his reborn Chic collective enjoying a career renaissance. "It's About Time", the first Chic album since 1992, is an all-star affair, with Rodgers calling on the services of a range of high-profile pals - Sir Elton John, Lady Gaga and Craig David included - to sing or rap over backing tracks that draw on sounds and styles dominant during the band's near 50-year career. That means there are plenty of nods to disco, of course, but also new jack swing, hip-hop, R&B, boogie, synth-pop, house, '80s soul and much, much more.

No Smoking On The Moon (AM edit) (7:38)
Magicke (Last Waltz Re-Do) (5:52)
Review: REPRESS ALERT!! Bastedos returns with more signature weirdo disco not disco (but disco) cut-up cuts.
This time the painstaking editing comes from A.M., Last Waltz, and Bastedos themselves.
Side A brings us Sit On This, a rolling, chugging, clapping, marimba-ing (!) disco workout in the vein of Material ,which pulls you along through a peaky peak time vocal, a sexed up guitar break, and some chopped-up chanting, all the way to its inevitable hands in the air Piano finale.
Side B first provides us first with No Smoking On The Moon and it's celestial choral stylings. Soft synths and tough bass play with each other beneath B-Movie fx and ecclesiastic organs. The sound of a space age disco cult... from the past.
Finishing off side B we have Magicke, the extended soundtrack to the opening of the gates of hell. Shuffling go-go perc, syncopated drums and fuzzed out chords play out under Satan's saxophone, before giving way to a damned (damned fuzzy that is) guitar, sounding out the call of Cthulu.

Review: Madrid's Synth Alien returns with a fresh EP out on Cyber Dance Records entitled 'Stellar Walker' that shows off his spaced-out and italofied influences in just the manner we've now come to expect from that label - slow-motion chugging synth workouts that are rich in atmosphere, confident in pace and arrangement and most importantly jam-packed with heavy riffing and piercing melodies from start to finish. Side A of the EP opens with "Come With Me", a dreamy and spacey slow-but-hard rocker that warms the ears up nicely before the second track "Hotel Chameleon" seals the deal with epic feeling and soaring melodic lines that break into an all-out synthesised feast of a climax. Side B continues with a collaboration with Moscow's Dmitry Distant 'L'Amour Est Parti', a romantically-tinged odyssey of relentless octave basslines that reaches even higher into new realms of future funk courtesy of a guest vocal from AKA INK before the EP closes with a monster of upfront determined electronic rocking called 'Smoke Comet', ending the record with a fitting cosmic crunch.

Review: Given the soul-soaked and generally far-sighted nature of techno veteran Fabrice Lig's music, it's unsurprising to see him popping up on Carl Craig's esteemed Planet E label. Galactic Soul Odyssey more than lives up to its' title, too, largely eschewing dancefloor techno rhythms in favour of tracks that bristle with the positivity of P-funk, boogie, broken beat and high class synth-pop (think rubbery slap bass, kaleidoscopic synths, '80s soul vocals and bouncy rhythms). It's a deliciously positive set, all told, with just the right balance between studied retro-futurism and effortlessly melodious atmosphere. Certainly, it's something of a triumph - an accessible romp with enough musical depth to please even the choosiest of heads.

Review: Cyber Dance Records are back on the attack with a fresh release from the legendary Perseus Traxx aka Nigel Rogers, a 4-track EP entitled after recent scientific developments 'An Apparent Horizon'. It's a firmly machine-based and totally jam-packed affair reflecting diverse sounds from the UK's own rich history of electronic dance music, with elements from the classic Warp "deep space sound" prominent as much as the more usual 303-jacking acid house grooves in the vein of Baby Ford or Bam Bam. 'Lost Dreams' opens the record with a floaty dream-like hypnosis from the depths of space and sets the tone in magnificent style, followed up on Side A with the irresistible roll of 'Reverse The Trend' that takes the groove harder, further and deeperstraight off to the beyond. Dark strings reminiscent of old LFO, B-12 or Autechre vinyls from the early 90s propel us into Side B on 'Darkness Stalks', and then we're transported onto the concluding track on the EP, 'Distances'; an epic closer that opens with beautiful reverbed claps and acid squelches before diving into an inky black void of timeless space-travelling and slow-building tension that could surely echo hauntingly around any M25 rave in the depths of a late 1980s night.

Links Der Pegnitz
Review: The good ship Claremont 56 sails back into focus with the sumptuous cosmiche strains of Fursatti, otherwise known as the non vocal elements of revered German act and Leng regulars Mountaineer. Stripped of this vocal element, the band's love of that vintage German sound shines through, the appropriately titled lead track "Rheinlust" rippling with metronomic glee over a subtley intoxicating groove. We defy anyone not to get consumed wholly by this track as it glides effortlessly on a wave of gently implemented sounds towards the run out groove. The band's love for another Claremont artist Holger Czukay and his celebrated band Can shines through on the accompanying "Links Der Pegnitz" a delightful jazz flecked number rich in thick layers of expert instrumentation.

Review: Despite a slightly odd concept - each track is named after a traditional Norwegian dish, apparently - this latest full-length missive from Norwegian space-disco veteran Hans-Peter Lindstrom is surprisingly jolly. Stylistically, it sounds like a return to the bold, synthesizer-heavy fodder that marked out the most successful period of his career. Certainly, it's more "I Feel Space" than Real Life Is Cool, though the sweeping builds and starry-eyed melodies of the grandiose Where You Go, I Go Too remain. It is, then, very much a standard Lindstrom album. That, though, isn't a criticism; at his best, few can come close. As far as emotional, upbeat electronic music goes, he's still a master.

Krash (All Nite Long) (feat Leee John)
Review: During the boogie years of the early 1980s, Imagination was that rarest of things: a British act who enjoyed considerable success on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. Charismatic, eccentric front man Leee John (prone to appearing on Top of The Pops and Soul Train in what looked like a giant nappy) was clearly the star attraction, though it was always the band's tactile, wide-eyed synth sound that really shone. This "best of" runs down the highlights of their career, mixing well-known, stone-cold classics such as "Just an Illusion", "Changes", "Flashback" and "Music & Lights" with lesser-known later works such as "Found My Love" (a definiantly sugary slow jam) and the Prince style flash-funk of "Krash (All Night Long)".

Blink & You'll Miss A Revolution (Das Moth & Kenji Takimi remix)
Review: Melbourne outfit Cut Copy have long straddled the worlds of indie and dance (and the doomed middle ground where the twain meets) with aplomb. This has extended to their remix commissions - 2011 alone has seen the likes of Gavin Russom, Azari & III and, gulp, Carl Craig tweaking Cut Copy material (fair dues must go to their record label Modular for their part in this curation too). Here they enlist the services of some UK and Australian talent to remix "Blink And You'll Miss A Revolution". First up is a Chicken Lips malfunction, with some early cowbell carnage giving way into a pulsating bassline and twinkling keys. This shares the A-Side with the equally ace Tornado Wallace version, which settles into a murky, rolling groove - file under "late night throbber". On the flip you'll find the original version of the track nestled alongside a clubby, acid-tinged remake from Das Moth and Kenji Takimi.

Review: Given the eclectic nature of Soft Rocks' output so far - and, in particular, their effortlessly Balearic re-edits of crate-digging obscurities - you'd expect this debut original album from the Brighton quartet to be impressively varied. For the most part, it is - though perhaps not in quite the ways you'd imagine. While you could certainly describe it as Balearic - see the dreamy, Kate Bush-ish pop of "Thunder Thunder", the Afro-tinged slo-mo prog-disco weirdery of "Slowdown" and the Spanish vocals and bubbling grooves of "Mirador De las Estrellas" - that wouldn't really do it justice. Hidden amongst the album's 11 exquisite cuts are trips into weirdo cock-rock territory, twisted dub-punk and folksy, string-drenched hypnotism. A fittingly impressive debut.
