Review: Legendary emo indie outfit The Cure have played all over the world in their decorated careers but back in 1996 when they headed to Brazil, it was the first time they had been to the country since 1988. They were there for the 1996 edition of the Hollywood Rock Festival which they headlined in superb fashion and wowed their Latin American fans. Live Lullabies & Other Bedtime Stories is a special recording of that night that comes on nice yellow vinyl and features the likes of signature anthems like 'Boys Don't Cry,' 'Friday I'm In Love,' 'Just Like Heaven' and many more.

Review: The Jesus & Mary Chain - Peel Sessions 84/86 offers a riveting glimpse into the evolution of the iconic noise pop band across four recording sessions for John Peel's BBC show. These sessions capture the band at various stages of their early sonic development, showcasing their signature blend of classic pop, noise, punk, psychedelia and garage rock. Each track serves as a testament to the band's innovative and influential sound, presenting a raw and unfiltered expression of their musical vision. With its combination of infectious melodies and gritty noise textures, this collection stands as a perfect document of The Jesus & Mary Chain's essential contribution to the alternative music landscape of the 1980s.

Review: For the first time in over 26 years, much-loved metallers Pearl Jam finally topped mainstream rock airplay charts in the US with the first single off their latest album. That came some 1000 days ahead of the album itself which has now finally arrived and has soon won over fans. That single, 'Dark Matter', became Pearl Jam's first No. 1 on the chart since 'Given To Fly' led for six weeks all the way back in January-February 1998. The rest of the album is full of just as much gold as that, with plenty more of their signature riffs and potent grooves all topped with Eddie Vedder's legendary lung-busting vocals.

Review: Just when you thought you'd heard Robert Smith and The Cure every which way but bad, we discover more from their huge back catalogue. This time in the form of World War, a compilation of rare demos that takes its name for the band's seminal early single, which appears in a particular raw and unfettered, grinding version on this collection. A sound that defines the overall aesthetic. Rough and ready but packed full of energy, the huge landmark 'Boys Don't Cry' feels more intimate as a result, 'Fire In Cairo' arguably more punk, 'M' more New Romantic, and 'Heroin Face' less compromising than ever before. If all that sounds like bullshit talking, we implore you to take a listen and see what you think - the smart money is on us agreeing in the end.

Review: Leeds indie stars English Teacher serve up a fantastic debut album here with 'This Could Be Texas'. Preceding hits 'The World's Biggest Paving Slab', 'Nearly Daffodils' and 'Mastermind Specialism' have all topped BBC 6 Music playlists and helped build the band quite the following. Their rise continued to soar after they appeared on Later With...Jools Holland, and they have since played a sold-out UK and US tour. Lead singer Lily Fontaine's vision for the album was "an odyssey to space, revealing Doncaster's likeness. It's about navigating in-betweens, cherishing home, and tracing Desire Paths." Fontaine reflects on being mixed-race in post-Brexit several times throughout the album and it comes here on lovely green vinyl.

Review: The 18th album from James, whose career spans over four decades, emerging in the C86 era of indie, coming to prominence as part of the Madchester movement but establishing and holding onto a loyal fan base and critical acclaim with their unique blend of alternative rock and dream pop. The band work in unique ways to keep things fresh and this is no exception, bringing us "the tracks that didn't make it to the next stage" before now. A significant milestone in their musical journey, showcasing the band's continued evolution and creative prowess, it encapsulates a wide range of emotions and themes, exploring personal experiences, societal issues and the human condition. James' distinct songwriting style is evident throughout, with thoughtful lyrics and introspective reflections, while musically, the album features the band's signature atmospheric soundscapes, ethereal melodies and intricate guitar work.

Review: Mute presents These Immortal Souls' first full-length album, Get Lost (Don't Lie!), remastered on vinyl and CD. Reissued in conjunction with the 1992 follow-up I'm Never Gonna Die Again, both albums are hearing a thorough looking-back-on in celebration of a full 35 years of their original releases, and the celebration of the life of founding member Roland S Howard. Remastered from the original tapes at the legendary Birdland Studio by Lindsay Gravina and original These Immortal Souls members Harry Howard and Genevieve McGuckin, the 30-minute, seven-track LP is a terse, noise-racked statement and is more cacophonous and disorderly than its dreamier, drawling follow-up.

Written and recorded during those same sessions and very much similarly flavoured, it continues a fine vein of form right now, with high praise coming in from the likes of Rolling Stone and Consequence. This special 10" also comes with a remix of the live favourite 'Alps' by Ninja Tune/Cambria Instruments electronica specialist Nathan Fake.

Review: The cult favourite Dark Entries hits 15 in style here and celebrates in the only way it knows how - with more great music. This time it is the legendary synth-punk yahoos Crash Course in Science aka Dale Feliciello, Mallory Yago, and Michael Zodorozny who are in the spotlight. The group formed back in 1979 and set out to make music using toy instruments and kitchen appliances. Their punk-y, aggressive, angular sound soon found a hardcore fan base and gave rise to big tunes like 'Cardboard Lamb' and 'Flying Turns.' In 1981 they recorded Near Marineland, a full-length that never actually saw the light of day but does now and shows the band moving into more diverse and polished territory.

Review: Latest on Mute Records' reissuing arm is this wonderful eight-track LP from These Immortal Souls, who in 1992 proffered a bold declaration of immortality, spiritual or otherwise, with I'm Never Gonna Die Again. An atmospheric post-punk gem, reissued alongside the earlier 'Get Lost (Don't Die)', is released just as it was in 1995, though it is soon set to be complemented by a brand new ten-track collection of unearthed and yet to be released live recordings. All three releases serve as a remembrance triad for the band led by Rowland S Howard, as they'd cease to perform in 1998; this one hears them at the height of their powers, snarling, riffing and drawling away into a graveyard-shifting musical night.

Review: These Immortal Souls was an Australian Indie rock band who released two albums and a handful of singles in the period from 1987 to 1998, signing to Mute records in a period when the label was mostly working with electronic bands of some sort. These Immortal Souls were more of a retro rock group that would probably be grouped more with bands like The Mighty Lemon Drops, The Jesus & The Chain or Nick Cave, and Extra gathers some of their best work for a compilation that turns out to be a fine tribute to the band who were clearly ahead of their time.

Review: It All Comes Down to This is the album latest release from Manchester icons A Certain Ratio, and it's a record that is helmed by producer Dan Carey from Speedy Wunderground. Somewhat returning to their origins, the record presents ten concise tracks with a hint of the group's signature electronic flair. Notably, it's the first recording featuring the core trio of Jez Kerr, Martin Moscrop, and Donald Johnson, without any additional collaborators. From their celebrated 1982 album and right up to their dynamic last EP in 2023, this album shows the band's still evolving and still committed to new musical advancements. A testament to their enduring legacy, It All Comes Down to This solidifies A Certain Ratio's place among Manchester's finest.

Review: DIY pop titans the Reds, Pinks & Purples take aim at the threads of hope with untethered abandon on their new album Unwishing Well. With the project helmed up by songwriter and musician Glenn Donaldson and backed up by collaborators Thomas Rubenstein, Lewis Gallardo, Daniel Pearce and Kati Mashikian, the new LP is a romantic sadcore memory-dive, fleshing out a 90s leftfield pop quintessence and lending it a contemporary production edge. Touchstones like The Go-Betweens, The Smiths, Magnetic Fields and Felt lend well to a terrific outpouring of emotion over ten tracks, which is remarkably frank in its admission of the worst foibles of the music industry and the metaphor for life evoked in this (read: 'Your Worst Song Is Your Greatest Hit').

It finds her collaborating with Ian Fitchuk who is known for his work with Kacey Musgraves and Maren Morris at Electric Lady Studios in New York City, and Rogers has co-produced and co-written eight of the album's ten tracks. It is a record that exudes a comforting warmth akin to a lazy Sunday afternoon - think well-worn denim, a leisurely drive in your favoorite car. It's pure understated elegance, classic yet contemporary, with many timeless pieces all feeling vintage yet not overly Americana in vibe.

Review: Bruno Berle hails from the coastal Brazilian city of Maceio, and he charmed the world in no uncertain terms with his 2022 album No Reino Dos Afetos. Berle's music is steeped in the tradition of MPB and Brazilian music overall, but he combines dreamy songwriting with an artful kind of lo-fi production which makes his sound all the more charming. This follow-up record once again finds Berle working closely with Batata Boy, drawn from the same seven-year period of developing ideas while moving from Maceio to Sao Paulo via some recording sessions in Rio de Janeiro. It's diaristic and scrapbook like, but rendered with such conviction it swoops in around your grey matter and carries you off to somewhere very pleasant indeed.

Review: Diane Birch returns with that spellbinding voice - a transportive powerhouse packing a timeless quality that resonates through her music. The American recording world doing what it has always done so well, creating huge, heartbreaking, hopeful, and captivating mini operas disguised as pop. Or, if you want to get technical here: soft rock, country, folk, r&b and soul. OK, so there are elements of funk and jazz, too, and the result is a heady brew that's pretty inescapable. Harking back to the balladry heydays, with shades of Dolly Parton, Whitney Houston, and Carly Simon, to name but a few - in delivery and performance, if not necessarily tone - no matter where you're listening from it's going to be hard to forget this one.

Review: Canadian noise-rock trio Metz deliver their fifth full-length LP for their home label Sub Pop. Expressing an exponential graph of maturity, that has grown over their decade or so of recording and releasing, Metz' sound on Up On Gravity Hill veers more towards an almost black-metallic atmosphere, to counterpoise their originally stark, rageful sound. Conceptually, the album's change in sound matches its thematic content, with the band having found more peace in contrast, and the life-promising realisation that one can only experience its most joyful moments on the sole condition that one has also suffered its worst vagaries - there is no paradise without the fall. On the likes of '99' and 'Entwined', we're met with a driving, repetitious howl set against a sludgy axe-y backdrop, as vocalist Alex Edkins performatively laments and celebrates the ways of the world at the same time.

Review: King's debut album, Steps In Time, is an infectious energy bomb of new wave dance pop. Led by the standout single 'Love & Pride,' the album delivers a vibrant collection of tracks that are sure to delight fans of the genre. While 'Love & Pride' undoubtedly steals the spotlight with its irresistible hooks and infectious energy, the rest of the album holds its own as well. The songs are all well constructed and grow on you with repeat listens like longtime fans of the album have realized. After 40 years, they still hold plenty of entertaining moments for those who appreciate the new wave meets pop sound.

Review: BODEGA's debut album under Chrysalis Records, Our Brand Could Be YR Life, arrives as a culmination of their indie-rock musings on the encroachment of corporate influence into youth culture. Initially conceived eight years ago, guitarist and vocalist Ben Hozie has described it as a project they have long wanted to undertake. With 15 fantastic tracks, the album delves into various indie-rock subgenres, from dance-punk to shoegaze and psychedelic rock. Reflecting on themes of self-critique and cultural commentary, it offers a diverse sonic landscape, with hints of influences like R.E.M. This vital new collection shows BODEGA's musical evolution and retains their keen observations on contemporary societal shifts.

Review: The Minneapolis Uranium Club Band's Infants Under The Bulb album is an engaging journey through unbridled punk creativity and raw guitar energy. Released amidst their hometown's vibrant underground scene, the album defies categorisation in the way it blends elements of punk, post-punk and experimental rock. With relentless rhythms, angular guitar riffs and cryptic lyrics, each track unfolds in heavy and arresting fashion and the band's unconventional approach and uncompromising attitude challenge listeners to embrace the unconventional throughout this most visceral of albums.

Review: There are few nu-metal bands from the formative late 90s/early 00s scene who achieved the monumental crossover appeal of Linkin Park. From their turntable spinning, frenetic rap-metal beginnings on 2000's global breakout Hybrid Theory, to the refined maturation of their formula on 2003's career-height Meteora, to their Jay-Z collaborative album Collision Course to the shedding of skin and rebranding as a genre-less alternative rock entity on 2007's Minutes To Midnight; as popular and accessible as they were, the band clearly constantly strived for sonic progression. Papercuts collects the highest charting singles from the group over two decades, with the most recent contribution being the previously unreleased 'Friendly Fire' recorded during the sessions for 2017's One More Light, which ultimately serves as the final new piece of recording from the band and vocalist Chester Bennington who would tragically take his own life later that same year. Ignoring the standard sequencing of a greatest hits which often lists the tracks in chronologically released order, here the cuts are compiled to sonically complement each other and reflect the band's ethos rather than a single line commercial pattern. Here is why the anthemic double platinum 'In The End' is juxtaposed with the minimalist rap-rock of MTM banger 'Bleed It Out', or why the previously unreleased fan favourite demo 'QWERTY' lands right between the U2 indebted 'What I've Done' and the original breakout single that started it all 'One Step Closer'.

Review: Manic Street Preachers' Lifeblood may have initially been the black sheep of their discography, but time has granted it a newfound appreciation. Initially met with lukewarm reception and overshadowed by its predecessors, the album's blend of glacial electronica and elegiac themes now stands as a testament to the band's willingness to evolve. Revisiting the album reveals its intricate textures and thematic depth. The production, influenced by Tony Visconti's work with David Bowie, creates a timeless atmosphere that resonates with listeners. Lyrically, Nicky Wire delves into personal and political history, offering introspective reflections on grief, disillusionment, and the passage of time. Tracks like 'The Love of Richard Nixon' and 'Empty Souls' explore themes of loss and societal unrest with poignant lyricism. Ultimately, Lifeblood may have been misunderstood upon its initial release, but its significance as a unique chapter in the Manic Street Preachers' journey cannot be denied. As listeners revisit the album with fresh ears, they'll discover a work that defies expectations and deserves recognition as a compelling and evocative piece of art.

Review: Mute's reissue of These Immortal Souls' sophomore album, I'm Never Gonna Die Again, has been long awaited by fans of the band's dark and brooding sound. Remastered from the original tapes by Lindsay Gravina, along with original members Harry Howard and Genevieve McGuckin at Birdland Studio, this edition breathes new sonic life into the haunting melodies and gritty textures of the album. Originally released in June 1992 after a hiatus due to Rowland S. Howard's writer's block, the album marked a triumphant return for These Immortal Souls. Lead single 'King of Kalifornia' set the tone with its gritty intensity, showcasing the band's evolution since their debut. Joined by Anthony Thistlethwaite on saxophone and slide mandolin, the band's lineup remained formidable, with Rowland S. Howard's distinctive vocals and guitar work leading the charge. Alongside Harry Howard, Epic Soundtracks, and Genevieve McGuckin, they craft a sonic landscape that was both haunting and hypnotic. For fans of post-punk and dark wave, I'm Never Gonna Die Again remains a standout in These Immortal Souls' discography. With this reissue, Mute pays homage to the band's enduring legacy, ensuring that their music continues to gain new fans for years to come.

Review: Norwegian indie talent Girl In Red kicked off her musical journey by sharing her home-recorded tunes as a teenager back in 2017. She has since become renowned for her raw lyrics and for delving into the everyday struggles and intricacies of relationships and has won a legion of fans, not least among them Taylor Swift, who invited her out on tour. Her breakout moment came with the viral sensation 'I Wanna Be Your Girlfriend,' followed by the enchanting 'We Fell in Love in October' in 2018. Fast forward to 2021, she unveiled her debut full-length album and soared up the charts. Now she is back with I'm Doing It Again Baby which comes on limited gatefold red vinyl and is full of more of her guitar-driven melodic indie-pop sounds and singalong hooks.

Review: Pearl Jam's Dark Matter sees the veteran rockers returning to their roots with a revitalised energy. Recorded in a rapid yet collaborative burst of creativity, the album captures a raw essence reminiscent of their early days. The band still delivers a potent rock-forward sound with muscular guitar leads and Vedder's iconic vocals. Tracks like 'Scared Of Fear' and 'Wreckage' showcase the band's trademark grandeur, while 'Setting Sun' serves as a raggedly majestic closer. Dark Matter proves to be very strong album which should excite longtime fans.

Review: Manchester mavericks A Certain Ratio have been on a rare run of form of late, with 2023's 1982 counting as one of their most vibrant and endlessly entertaining albums for decades. Of course, all their albums are of a consistent quality, but It All Comes Down To This genuinely crackles with energy. From the word go, the veteran band's inherent funkiness is present, but this time it comes cloaked in fuzzy funk-rock guitar riffs, acid-fried effects, and vocals that are amongst the most forthright they've committed to wax (or, in this case, CD). In many ways, it is - as the band and producer/Sopeedy Wunderground boss Dan Carey intended - a 'back to basics' sound that focuses on the key aspects of ACR's sound. When those 'basics' are so strong, it's no surprise that the results are this impressive.

Review: Mute's re-release of These Immortal Souls' debut album, Get Lost (Don't Lie!), marks a long-awaited moment for fans of post-punk excellence. Remastered from the original tapes by Lindsay Gravina, along with original band members Harry Howard and Genevieve McGuckin at Birdland Studio, this edition breathes new life into the iconic record. Originally unleashed in 1987 on the heels of their debut EP, Marry Me, the album encapsulates the band's raw energy and uncompromising vision. Led by the unmistakable vocals of Rowland S. Howard, renowned for his work with the Birthday Party, the band's lineup, including Harry Howard, Epic Soundtracks, and Genevieve McGuckin, solidifies their place in the annals of post-punk history. Clocking in at a concise 30 minutes, Get Lost (Don't Lie!) remains a potent sonic statement, capturing the essence of These Immortal Souls' dark and brooding sound. From the haunting atmospheres to the frenetic rhythms, each track is a testament to the band's collective talent and creative chemistry. For both seasoned enthusiasts and newcomers to the These Immortal Souls saga, this reissue serves as a fitting tribute to a band whose influence reverberates through the underground music scene.

Dark Matter: Dolby Atmos Immersive Mix & HD Audio (Blu-ray)
Review: Pearl Jam's 12th album, Dark Matter, sees the veteran rockers returning to their roots with a renewed sense of vigor. Departing from the reflective tone of their previous release, Gigaton, the band opted for a more spontaneous approach to songwriting, gathering in a room to craft material that feels refreshingly loose and live. The album as a whole delivers some convincing arguments for a classic Pearl Jam collection. Tracks like "'Scared Of Fear,' 'Wreckage,' and 'Setting Sun' showcase the band's trademark grandeur, with muscular guitar leads, powerful drumming, and Eddie Vedder's unmistakable vocals leading the charge. Many long time fans will appreciate this album as a fiery rebirth after a series of more stilted releases. Ultimately, Dark Matter is a audio guidepost to Pearl Jam's enduring identity and their ability to deliver authentic rock music that resonates with both diehard fans and casual listeners alike.

This record, while nodding to their roots, delivers 10 succinct tracks infused with the group's distinctive electronic touch and marks the first recording featuring the core trio of Jez Kerr, Martin Moscrop, and Donald Johnson without additional collaborators. Recorded in Kwake Bass' South London studio, this nine-track masterpiece defies genre boundaries, seamlessly blending blues, folk, post-rock, and dub to create a unique sonic landscape. Review: The latest offering from serial collaborator and cross-genre tastemaker Stephen O'Malley's Ideologic Organ imprint is a tender filigree bureau of acid folk sketches from Tokyo's Ai Aiso. Across seven tracks, she patiently meanders through broken and phased chord progressions, her simultaneously pure and wavering vocal lines forming elegant arcs over sparse beds of instrumentation and washes of room tone. Some tracks are bookended by applause, and it is this ostensibly 'indoorsy' atmosphere which lends the mini LP a great deal of charm; the delicate atmospherics seem to issue from an intimate and isolated space. Indeed, Bandcamp user Everyvillianislemons317 describes it as "The perfect album for a lonely night in the city." We're more than inclined to agree.

Review: Mute's latest offering, Extra, unveils a treasure trove of live recordings and remastered tracks from the enigmatic post-punk outfit These Immortal Souls. Led by the inimitable Rowland S. Howard, known for his pioneering work with the Birthday Party alongside Nick Cave, the band's Australian roots infuse their London-based sound with a unique edge. This album, accompanied by detailed sleeve notes by original member Harry Howard, serves as a companion piece to the 2024 remasters of their seminal debut Get Lost (Don't Lie!) and sophomore effort I'm Never Gonna Die Again. The tracklist is a akin to the band's eclectic tastes, featuring visceral renditions of classics like Alice Cooper's 'Luney Tune' and Iggy Pop & James Williamson's 'Open Up and Bleed.' With Rowland S. Howard's distinctive vocals leading the charge, complemented by the masterful musicianship of Harry Howard, drummer Epic Soundtracks, and keyboardist Genevieve McGuckin, These Immortal Souls deliver a sonic journey that transcends time and genre boundaries. Formed in 1987 after departing Crime & the City Solution, These Immortal Souls carved out their own sonic niche, blending raw energy with haunting melodies. Extra offers a glimpse into the world of one of post-punk's most underrated gems.
