Review: Jo Wallace's Ramrock label has always proved adept at blending reggae, dub and lovers rock with elements of jazz, soul and Balearic beats. You'll find a similar blend of sounds at the heart of the label's latest 12" - a fine, roots reggae style cover version of Aaron Neville's much-loved rare groove jam 'Hercules' by Asian Dub Foundation singer Ghetto Priest. His version (side A) is effortlessly soulful, with warming horns, clipped guitars and his own sublime vocals rising above a languid reggae riddim. Arguably even better is Darren Morris and Ashley Beedle's flipside remix, which adds bluesy pianos, hazy horns, vibrant Clavinet riffs and Ghetto Priest's vocals to a faithful rendition of the swinging, bumpin' groove that made Neville's 1973 version so addictive.

Review: Earlier this year, DJ Scientist stumbled upon another early Ghia composition tucked away in the depths of a master tape. It was a treasure too precious to remain unheard. Sadly, the original track couldn't see the light of day due to sound quality and issues with the original vocals. To make matters more disappointing, no instrumental version survived. Thus, the only way to share this catchy boogie funk track with the world was to recreate it from scratch. And so, the Ghia saga unfolds once more, but in this chapter, there's a new and unique twist. 'Out Of Luck' draws its roots from the aforementioned lost track, originally composed by the group in 1985. This time, however, the song has been expertly reworked by Marian Tone, with new vocals by Adriano Prestel. The outcome? Quite possibly one of the smoothest and most refreshing modern funk tunes you'll hear this year.

Review: Gillespie & Co. - produce of the British city of Gloucester, and helmed by the mighty Andrew Gillespie - here serve up a weird and wonderful slice of international-soul-dub-everything. 'Keep On Doin' What You're Doing' is an ode to "keeping on trucking", a mantra for stoic steely-facedness we're all too used to in this country. Influenced by the sound of niche label Starsoul Records, this gem is mainly a collab between Gillespie and vocalist Dolly James, formally a backing singer for the likes of Van Morrison and Mick Hucknall. Wonky, filtered, sating and full of pan-flute and artificial handclaps, we're bowled over by this disco-soul gem.

Review: During his time working at Jazzman, Athens of the North founder Euan Fryer tracked down the late, great Avelino Pitts, whose impossible-to-find mid 1970s work with Gold counts as some of the deepest psychedelic soul ever recorded. Here, Fryer offers up two of Gold's greatest, previously featured on a 2011 Jazzman compilation, on "45" for the first time. Both songs are deep, fluid, emotional and evocative, with Pitts' impassioned lead vocals rising above intricately detailed backing tracks that prioritise twinkling pianos, reverb-laden slow grooves and slowly shifting basslines over cheap soul showmanship. As a result, from the first listen you'll be hooked.

Review: Yuki "Monolog" Kanesaka is a soul, jazz and r&b producer who is based between Boston and Tokyo, and Yuki "T-Groove" Takahashi is widely regarded as one of Japan's best remixes. Together they are Golden Bridge and they make timeless soul sounds steeped in magical musicianship and lush production. Elements of greats like Herbie Hancock and the Mizell Brothers loom large over these tunes which come from their eponymous 2019 album. 'Wouldn't Be The Same' opens in funky and stepping soul style with neat bass riffs. The B-side is a cover of Tony Etoria's 'I Can Prove It' that swells the heart with its upbeat grooves, yearning vocal and rich strings.

Review: The supply of superlative sounds from Athens Of The North knows no bounds - rarely does a week go by with out the well regarded reissue label coming thorough with yet another obscure, forgotten, overlooked or rare gem that has is immediately fall in love. Falling into those categories again is this 7" 'The Sands of Zanzibar, Pt. 1' from Leonard Grandson. It is a floating groove that will swells the heart and is super hard to find in original form. It is thought to be from 1977 and was recorded in a Hollywood studio. Leonard sounds not unlike Steve Wonder and really hits a sweet spot on this one.

Review: Betty Griffin's 'Free Spirit' gets served up as two new remixed versions in honour of the 10 Year Anniversary of Greg Belson's noteworthy radio show, Divine Chord Gospel Show on Dub Lab. Greg himself joins up with Paulo Fulci as Divine Situation to add their own special fire to the already hot originals. Their first Downlow rework rides on some psyched-out guitar lines with the chunky, percussive rhythms riding rough below. Then, on the flip, the Maceo's dub is more smooth, streamlined and cosmic with its widescreen synth lines.

Recorded during the late 60s and 70s, many of the cuts on this special triple-7" box set have never been further than the state line. Which is utter madness... Review: We now know that Daman Albarn's face-less and animated Gorillaz project was way ahead of its time. The tunes still stand up, too, with early hit 'Clint Eastwood' one of the best they did. It gets pressed dup here to this cheeky and limited 7", its low slung and downbeat groove topped with dub harmonicas and the drawling vocals of Albarn. On the flip is the more sunny, big beat offering of '19-2000' (Soulchild remix) which is lit up with naggy vocal hooks and singalong verses that are ripe for cheery party sessions in the great outdoors.

Review: Having appeared on several EPs throughout the late '70s and early '80s on labels like Westbound and Capitol, most people think of Erasmus Hall as one person. Rather, they were actually a collective of artists that were given the name by grandmaster George Clinton of Parliament / P-Funk. This might not be immediately audible on the gentle waves of "Just Me & You", but the song does contain a certain air of oddity and conniving funkiness that rendered that period of disco just so damn enticing. The flip contains "Your Love Is My Desire", another gentle heart-warmer to stick on in those more intimate moments... What a delightful little 7"!

Review: Expansion is pushing the boat out for Record Store Day 2020. Chief among the label's must-check RSD releases is this 12", which offers up fresh re-edits - courtesy of an un-credited re-editor - of two sought-after cuts by late-'70s and early '80s West Coast fusionists Halo. The headline attraction is undoubtedly the fresh edit of the ultra-rare extended mix of 1981's 'Let Me Do It', a warm and groovy modern soul/boogie jam primarily known for its' familiar "let me do until you're satisfied" vocal refrain. The band's shorter original version is also included in the package, alongside a shorter re-edit of their sparkling, synth-heavy 1988 single "Life". In keeping with the more celebrated A-side, it's an energetic, life-affirming earworm.

Review: Chant record label head and under-represented South soul genius put out his Bill Haney's Atlanta Soul Brotherhood CD in 1998 which had these two previously unreleased tunes on. Now they finally make it to wax with a good backstory that was told by Bill and published in Voices From The Shadows. It goes that 'The Golden Voice' aka Roy Hamilton was in town and Bill gave him a song to record which turns out to be the majestic A-side here, while The Drifter's Charlie Thomas was also in the area one time when he recorded the b-side. Both gems.

Review: A new 7" all the way from Japan's Urban Discos label, from a live band with roots in soul, jazz and funkFirst up is their cover of 'Give Me Your Love,' a Curtis Mayfield jam. It's an instrumental in their hands and one that has some superb guitar solos and nice drum jams under organ vamps that are warm and subdued. 'Koi No Yokan (The Premonition Of Love)' is another vibrant mix of Hammond organs, swaying drums and splashing cymbals that is full of laid back melancholy.

These two tunes exemplify what to expect from the long player with sleek seventies pop sounds. 'One Night of the Week' is led by Harden's voice with the dexterous Soulful Saints adding the buttery support next to Latin percussion, horns and even a string quartet. Review: French label Battle Weapons does it again here with another superb reissue of a dynamic fusion of vintage soul-jazz and catchy beats. They come from Hardly Subtle featuring Peggy Lee, whose iconic vocals soar over Hardly's masterful production to utterly alluring effect. The track pulsates with a gently infectious energy and infuses organic drums with modern electronic rhythms. Review: The Harlem Gospel Traveler's much loved second album Look Up won the group plenty of fans so this follow up release is much anticipated indeed. 'Help Me To Understand' comes with the heavenly vocals of Aaron Frazer and was written and produced by Eli "Paperboy" Reed. It's a tune defined by its spine tinging vocal harmonies and lullaby like melodies with emotive acoustic guitars adding extra layers of lushness. Review: Dennis Brown's 'Love Has Found Its Way' is the subject of this super cover version on Vortex out of Japan. It is Maya Hatch and Robert Dubwise Brownie who are behind it and they bring lush lovers rock vibes and rolling reggae to their unique interpretation. Hayassen is the producer and the a-side version is awash with island chords that ring out over a clam sea and sundown. The fleshy bass and wiggling percussion ensure some nice dancing vibes next to the romantic vocals and the dub side on the flip closes out this crucial import in style.
