Cat: KA 1003P. Rel: 24 Apr 19
  1. I Choose You (5:54)
  2. Punkin' Funkin' (4:38)
Review: It would be fair to say that Paris Holley is not one of the best-known purveyors of 1980s funk and soul, though the handful of releases he put out in the decade tend to be cherished by serious diggers and DJs. 1984 jam "I Choose You", which is here reissued for the first time since the '80s, is undoubtedly one of his standout moments. Hazy, super-sweet and laidback, the cut sees Holley adding his soulful, high octave tones to a blissful backing track rich in fluid piano lines, sun-kissed guitars and mazy synth lines. Arguably even better is synth-funk B-side "Punkin' Funkin", a fizzing workout that sounds like a more soulful, talkbox-free take on Zapp man Roger Troutman's trademark sound.

Love Will Come
Cat: MD 111. Rel: 09 Nov 20
  1. Love Will Come (2:36)
  2. She's So Confused (2:58)
Review: 20 years ago, the previously unissued 'Love Will Come' was featured on a compilation of Northern Soul style tracks from Philadelphia. Here it finally gets a much-deserved vinyl pressing courtesy of MD Records. It's well worth picking up, because it's a mid-1960s gem that combines a Northern Soul-friendly stomping soul groove with boisterous, celebratory horns and simply superb lead vocals from Patty Russell. Quite why it has never made it onto wax before remains a mystery; either way, we're glad it finally has. Turn to the flip and you'll find a previously unheard treat from the band: an answer record to their successful single 'Mixed Up, Shook Up, Girl' to adds doo-wop style harmony vocals to a handclap-heavy, pop-soul backing track of the sort that was so popular in 1964.

Let The Dollar Circulate
Cat: BEWITH 017TWELVE. Rel: 05 Aug 20
  1. Let The Dollar Circulate (4:59)
  2. East (6:24)
Review: Philly soul star Billy Paul made some great records during his mid 1970s heyday, though few are quite as sublime as "Let The Dollar Circulate", a passionate plea for economic equality that adds sumptuous orchestration and serious dancefloor chops to the then popular conscious soul template. Paul's lead vocal is superb, while Gamble and Huff's production is as good as you'd expect. Remarkably, this is the first time the track has featured on a 12" single, so props to Be With Records for spotting a gap in the market. You certainly need it in your life - honestly, it's incredible - while flipside "East", an incredible chunk of spiritual soul recorded in 1971, is every bit as awesome. Recommended.

You Do You
You Do You (white vinyl 7")
Cat: BJ 727. Rel: 18 Apr 19
  1. You Do You (feat Howard Johnson) (3:43)
  2. Life To Me (3:50)
Review: Trailer Limon and E Da Boss (he of Myron & E fame) have been recording as The Pendletons for the best part of a decade, serving up occasional slices of revivalist electrofunk and turn-of-the-'80s soul. They're at it again here, popping up on Bastard Jazz with a double dose of goodness made with the assistance of some of the Bay Area's finest musicians. The headline attraction is undoubtedly the Howard Johnson hook-up "You Do You", a rich and evocative chunk of mid-tempo disco-soul blessed with mix-friendly drum breaks, seductive instrumentation (think glistening funk guitars, toasty bass, punchy horns and fluid pianos) and a slick, smooth lead vocal. "Life To Me", a more sugary affair built around distinctive slap bass, sustained chords, relaxed drums and subtle synth flourishes, is similarly impressive.

Don't Turn Your Back
Don't Turn Your Back (7") (1 per customer)
Cat: BJ 729. Rel: 19 Mar 20
  1. Don't Turn Your Back (feat Rojai) (3:40)
  2. You Do You (feat Howard Johnson - Potatohead People remix) (3:58)
Review: The Pendletons are keeping the sweet sound of West Coast boogie alive and well. Following their burning hot album drop "2 Steps Away" last year, they're back on Bastard Jazz with a crucial new single that further expands on their insanely funky sound. "Don't Turn Your Back" is a catchy anthem with Rojai on guest duties and so much slick instrumentation you'll find yourself poppin' from the moment the needle drops. On the flip, album track "You Do You" gets the remix treatment from Potatohead People, keeping the Pendletons' funk ethic front and centre but whipping up a sturdier rhythm section for the Howard Johnson-voiced track.

Color Me (reissue)
Cat: AOE 035. Rel: 22 Aug 19
  1. Color Me (2:32)
  2. Misty Shade Of Pink (2:35)
Review: Way back in 1970, People In The News released their sole single on Knap Town, a tiny label based in Indiana. Original copies of that funk "45" are notoriously hard to find, thanks in no small part to the quality of both cuts. Step forward Athens Of The North boss Euan Fryer, who has secured the rights to reissue the single for the first time. A-side "Color Me" is the real bomb: a down-low chunk of mid-tempo funk with politically charged group vocals, rasping guitar licks and hip-hop style drum breaks. Over on side B, "Misty Shade Of Pink" is the kind of rock solid instrumental funk workout you'd expect to hear from the Meters.

Dreaming Our Lives Away
  1. Dreaming Our Lives Away (3:36)
  2. A Feeling Inside (4:22)
Review: In early 2019, Athens of the North put out a new edition of an obscure, private press modern soul album from 1976 by People's Pleasure with Alive & Well, an alias of a band better known for their 'World Full of People' 45 as Everyday People. This "45" boasts two tasty cuts from that set. On the A-side you'll find 'Dreaming Our Lives Away', a heady crossover soul/funk tune whose reverb-laden female vocals, punchy horn lines and tactile grooves should appeal to all serious '70s soul heads. Over on the flip you'll find starry-eyed, loved-up slow jam 'A Feeling Inside', a no less potent but far more laidback affair.

Cat: BGPS 016WHITE. Rel: 10 Aug 20
  1. Jean Jacques Perrey - "EVA" (3:11)
  2. Camille Yarbrough - "Take Yo' Praise" (4:12)
Review: Moog mastermind Jean Jacques-Perrey first released "E.V.A." on his landmark 1970 album "Moog Indigo", but most children of the '90s would recognise the distinctive, effervescent lead hook from the Fatboy Slim remix that totally encapsulates the big beat era. This handy jukebox 12" carries Perrey's original on one side, and on the flip another iconic piece of Norman Cook source material. Camille Yarborough's "Take Yo' Praise" was a cult slice of jazz funk released in 1975 that really is just perfect in its original state, but there's no denying Cook struck gold when he flipped it into chart-topping hit "Praise You".

Call On Me
Cat: EX 7011. Rel: 19 Jul 16
  1. Call On Me (vocal) (3:52)
  2. Call On Me (instrumental) (3:30)
Review: Singer, songwriter and session vocalist for Motown and Chess, Jeff Perry spent the late 70s on his own solo adventure and "Call On Me" was one of his earliest endeavours. A fairly urgent torch song executed with few theatrics but rather layers of soft harmonies, a funk-riddled break and a dreamy middle eighth. Flip for the instrumental and you'll hear just how much power and emergency the Jeff's vocals provide now they're removed.

Review: Dirty Burner Personify dusts off his scalpel for the first time this year with two beautiful, floor-aimed edits of two late 70s soul funk bangers.Soul On Your Side' takes the lead with its belting vocals and even juicier bassline. Meanwhile on the flip You Can Be Star' gets a little tweak in the kick department, a slight extension and a disco bubbled boost for modern floors. Take it personally.

Home Is Where The Hatred Is

  1. Home Is Where The Hatred Is (3:23)
  2. I've Never Found A Man (To Love Me Like You Do) (3:22)
Review: This tidy reissue gathers together tracks from two different Esther Phillips singles, both of which were originally released in 1971. Pride of place goes to the legendary soul singer's cover of Gil Scott-Heron's "Home Is Where The Hatred Is", which also opened her brilliant album "From A Whisper To A Scream". Sounding a little like the period "conscious soul" of Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye, the track is brilliantly arranged and performed by Phillips and her assembled studio musicians. B-side "I've Never Found a Man (To Love Me Like You Do)" is an altogether sweeter affair, with Phillips and backing vocalists rising above a punchy, orchestrated soul groove.

Baby Don't Leave Me Here
  1. Baby Don't Leave Me Here (4:15)
  2. How Does It Feel (3:29)
Review: No longer dealing in edits, but instead long lost or out of print disco and soul gold, Super Disco Edits turn their focus to the early works of The Plainwrap Band here. These are all tracks produced and arranged by Marvin Augustus that were recorded to a dusty reel that ended up in the hands of producer Stu Gardner. He transferred the reels and once the label got wind they decided to track down Augustus. He'd forgotten all about the project but revelled that some of leading musicians from America's West Coast were called upon to play on these romantic, emotional and musical soul-groovers.

Neither act require an introduction. The famous Oakland all-girl troupe take the lead with "Send Him Back", their sophomore single (that regularly fetches upwards of L100 a copy) it's a bubblegum soul frenzy with all the energy you'd expect from their breakthrough years. The Drifters carries a similar sense of focus and energy with vibrant backing vocals and a sunny side soul touch that will have you bouncing from here to next winter.

Review: Famously returning to the game he was part of right back in the late 80s, Brian Power released his first album last year at the age of 54. Wheels Turning
Cat: TR 729. Rel: 01 Oct 20
  1. Wheels Turning (4:05)
  2. Wheels Turning (instrumental) (4:14)
Review: Over the years Timmion's in-house band, Cold Diamond & Mink, has provided richly funky, soulful and formidably fuzzy musical backing for a dizzying array of American and European vocalists and, on rare occasions, jazz soloists. For their latest venture, the revivalist combo has reunited with "Nordic Americana and neo-folk" twosome Pratt & Moody (Tuomo Prattala and Markus Nordenstreng), for the first time since 2018's Words, Words, Words. As you might expect, 'Wheels Turning' is a heartfelt, slow-motion affair, with the duo's impassioned blue-eyed soul vocals rising above glistening guitars and a relaxed, laidback beat. The beauty of Cold Diamond and Mink's backing track can be savoured in full on the flipside instrumental take.

More Than Friends (7" + sticker)
Cat: LTR 003. Rel: 18 Dec 20
  1. More Than Friends (3:51)
  2. More Than Friends (instrumental) (3:52)
Review: For the uninformed, The Precious Lo's is a boogie-flavoured project from former 21st century trip-hop twosome Circle Research (AKA Gil Musada and Nik Timar). Two years ago they hit the heights with a fine debut album on P-Vine and now they've become an integral part of Toronto's Love Touch Records family. 'More Than Friends' is sparse, soulful and, frankly, superb, with Masuda and guest vocalist Maylee Todd performing a pitch-perfect duet atop a crunchy hip-hop soul beat rich in colourful boogie synths and one of the most squelchy, G-funk style basslines we've ever heard. Flip to the B-side to savour the pair's brilliant beat in full via the similarly essential Instrumental Mix.

  2. My Sense Of Direction (Is Blown) (2:39)
Review: This Precisions (Philly Group) were a different group to the Detroit Precisions. These two tracks come from when they were working with Philadelphia producer Marty Bryant. We can imagine that some Northern Soul DJs tracked down copies of the scarce original pressing of this fine 7" for B-side "My Sense of Direction (Is Blown)", a heartfelt soul shuffler with serious dancefloor chops. Arguably even better, though, is A-side "Take a Closer Look", a slower, simmering chunk of doo-wop influenced goodness that's as heartbreaking as it is sublime.

Don't Act Like A Fool
Cat: ATH 083. Rel: 30 Apr 20
  1. Don't Act Like A Fool (4:25)
  2. In Love (3:47)
Review: Athens of the North boss Euan Fryer recently described Premonition as "the best obscure New York boogie act you've never heard of". He'll be releasing an entire album of their rare and unreleased material later in the year, but first he's treating us to a reissue of their best-known moment - impossible-to-find 1986 soulful boogie slammer "Don't Act Like A Fool". The track ticks all the right boxes -rubbery slap bass, mid-80s FM synth sounds, passionate male lead vocal, needless but delicious sax and electric guitar solos etc - and is little less than an overlooked dancefloor heater. On the flip you'll also find original B-side "In Love", which Fryer brilliantly (and accurately) describes as a "mid-tempo floater".

Review: Another royal re-edit by the one and only KON, here we find him going to town on 1974 soul classic from Pat Tandy's The Pretenders. Flipping the arrangement so each section gets a chance to shine (notably the raffish walking bassline and sweeping strings) the lead remix pays full respect to the original while giving it a completely fresh new life. Complete with the extended original for the more purest fans, KON's delivered gold once again.

  2. That's Why I Love You (instrumental) (2:57)
Review: With this tasty 7" single, Record Shack has delivered something of a Christmas present for Northern Soul fans. Those with a deep love of stomping Detroit soul should already known "That's Why I Love You", a "northern" scene favourite originally released on Groove City Records in 1967. The two versions showcased here, though, have never before seen the light of day. The "Alternate Take" featured on the A-side is something of a soaring gem reminiscent of up-tempo Stevie Wonder cuts of the period and blessed with some brilliant vocals from the Professionals. This time round, it's backed by a stripped-back instrumental version heavy in guitars, bass, drums and horns, but low on orchestration.
