Review: Originally released in 1979 on Dominant Records, this double single features production by Italian composers and vocalists Antonio Iglio and Antonio Moxedano. 'Tigre' and 'Gennarino 'O Sioux'' saw extreme demand after becoming instant cult classics. The bass is tight and the vocal melodies are instant foot tappers, you'll be humming it for hours. The original 7" is one of the most wanted and rarest around, with very few copies ever going on the second hand market - reaching the hundreds in some cases - a huge leap forward for the Neapolitan Disco Funk scene, and a testament to the pure talent of these artists in what was arguably the beginning of a golden era for Italian funk and soul.

Review: Philadelphia International Records continues to dip into its bulging archives and offer up double-packs containing some of the finest 1970s remixes from remix pioneer Tom Moulton. As you'd expect, there's plenty to get the juices flowing and the heart pounding on this third volume in the series. Record one opens up with Moulton's epic version of the O'Jays' "This Time Baby", a swirling Philly Soul classic that later became a favourite of sample-loving disco-house producers and disco re-editors, and continues with his sugary but floor-friendly version of the Futures' "Party Time Man". Over on record two, Moulton's inspired extension of Jean Carn's seductive "Love Don't Come Easy" is followed by his must-have version of the Jones Girls' "Nights Over Egypt".

Review: Washington DC-based label People's Potential Unlimited is one of those that seems to have an endless supply of magical sounds that all very much fit with its MO and are all pretty unique. Often times that is down to the smart digging of the owners who unearth plenty of treasures for reissuing but this time out it is a new record from a contemporary outfit, TAMTAM. The four piece band formed in Tokyo and started making reggae and dub before moving on to jazz, soul, new age and psych-pop. They bring subtle euphoria to what they do as well as catchy grooves and nostalgic melodies as exemplified here on this mature new work that will be lapped up by fans of Khruangbin.

Review: Hitomi Toyama's 'Sweet Soul Music' originally made it to wax last year, when the track appeared as part of a rare Japanese funk compilation curated by the sound's brightest stars, Wamono. Now, though, it gets a proper release on 7", and is backended by the sultry B-side 'Wanna Kiss', which sounds pitched up and chirpy in its shrill alto vocals, which assure us we're held. The A, meanwhile, is as horny (in both senses of the word) as ever, quite obviously singing the praises of "sweet soul music... I love you!"

Review: During the latter stages of the "Philly Soul" era, New York remixer Tom Moulton delivered a string of inspired, DJ friendly reworks for the Philadelphia International label. For proof, check this fine selection of classic Moulton mixes for the storied imprint. Check first his version of Archie Bell and the Drells' "Where Will You Go When The Party's Over", which he brilliantly teases out and increases in intensity over nine spellbinding minutes. The funkier flex of People's Choice's "Jam, Jam, Jam (All Night Long)" is a sweaty, low-down treat, while the Teddy Pendergrass rework is a soaring disco classic in the Philly Soul style. Best of all, though, is the string-drenched disco celebration that is his mix of Lou Rawls' "See You When I Git There".

Review: Soul Direction's 19th outing might be their best to date. It is some top work from The Natural Soul Brothers Ltd that was originally recorded in Philly for the Wally-O Production stable back in 1970. It never got released after originally being laid down back then and that's a shame because it has plenty of great talent on display. The soul grooves are defined by a haunting sound and lingering vocals that make for a mellow but involving track. On the flip, there is more rambunctious energy, prickly drum rhythms and free-form guitar riffs next to a big vocal.

Review: Floating Points reissued the 1976 debut album Open Soul from Chicagoan soul/jazz-funk fusionists six-member outfit Tomorrow's People on his Melodies International imprint. Now P-Vine serve up a couple of singles from it, one of which has had a T Groove edit. Spanning a wide range of soul and jazz-funk styles, 'Open Soul' has a rubbery bassline and sock chord work with some big vocals and smooth grooves. It is an epic trip into space-soul territory. On the flip is 'It Ain't Fair', a much more slow and sentimental cut with romantic vocals and yearning chords.

Review: Ray Williams & The Majortones's 'Girl (You're So Sweet, You're So Fine)' on Epsilon Records has never previously been released, somehow. It is a wonderfully sweet modern and crossover soul sound that is actually a cover version of the popular Lil Major Williams original of the same name. The grace is a lush one driven by soul-train-era beats and big horns that burst out of the mix while the buttery smooth vocal gets you where it hurts. Flip it over for a more funky instrumental version.

Review: This is one of those man-old 45rpms that can still command eye wateringly high prices on second-hand sales markets. It was a real favourite of the rare soul scene thanks to be popularised by Mark "Butch" Dobson at the start of his DJ adventures. It has remained true illusive over the years but this reissue from Soul Direction Origins changes all that. On the a-side is Hank Hodge & The J Notes Band's 'Eye for An Eye' which is an upbeat soul burner with big horn arrangements and plenty of interaction between the male lead and female chorus on the backing. On the flipside is 'Since You Said Goodbye', a slow-burning and heart-melting sentimental soul lament.

Review: Johnnie Taylor never really wrote any of his own music and he couldn't play any instrument particularly well but that hasn't stopped him becoming known as a rather accomplished soul artist. He penned an incredible 30 odd albums and more than 120 singles as a leading male vocalist in the sixties and works dunder names like 'Blues Wailer' and the 'Philosopher Of Soul'. He was a doo-wop group member initially back in the 50s but by the mid-sixties he was working with Stax as a blues artist. 'Let's Get Back On' on the A-side here is from his 1999 album Gotta Get The Groove back and is backed with a beautiful ballad from the legendary Bobby 'Blue' Bland.

Review: This fine new double-sided soul release from Soul4Real features two legendary producers and one legendary singer. When Dionne Warwick joined Warner Brothers in 1972 it brought an end to her work with Bacharach and David and saw her hook up with new soul producers of the era such as Holland/Dozier/Holland, Jerry Ragovoy and Thom Bell. The ensuing collabs are some of the best in her career and include two incredible mid-70s tracks that feature here. This essential 45 was unheard for almost 40 years but then made it to CD in 2003 and now vinyl. Essential stuff.

Review: Fresh, clean and modern disco from Japan's T-Groove. Channelling the yeah-yeah-ing vocals of American r&b contemporary Maddam Mya, 'Move Me' is a bass-riffing, double-clapping charger in the mode of 80s-20s nu-boogie. 'Be Black Baby' is a proud celebration of his race at a time when it was no doubt hugely risky to do so - right in the midst of the civil rights movement's peak days. And that is the case with New York vocal soul group The Topics' gold-standard and one-and-only album 'Giving Up'. Now you can own two of the best tunes from it on this new 7" from P-Vibe for a much more reasonable price. The tunes selected are indicative of the heart-achingly sweet and yellow soul sounds explored across the whole album. Review: Dimitri From Paris has previously reworked classic Ten City cuts - most notably 'That's The Way Love Is' - so it's fitting that he's been given the chance to rework one of the legendary house outfit's most recent tunes, 2021 revivalist disco gem 'Be Free'. His extended A-side remix is terrific: a hybrid jazz-funk/disco/boogie-soul gem that builds brilliantly via layered acapella and groove-focused sections before introducing the vocals and reaching for the lasers. Over on the flip, the French veteran delivers a 'Dubstrumental' take that brilliantly showcases different aspects of the track's superb, organic instrumentation whilst keeping both eyes firmly on the dancefloor. Review: The Techniques and The Zodiacs are two revered reggae groups renowned for their distinct sound and contributions to the genre's evolution. Both bands are synonymous with several classics and have left an indelible mark on music history. Now they are back on this new 45rpm with two coveted Jamaican rocksteady and ska gems as part of the celebratory launch of the new Treasure Isle Story series by Charly Records. First up is a masterful recording by The Techniques that epitomises Duke Reid's penchant for melody and tight harmony vocals. This rendition was originally penned by Curtis Mayfield for the Impressions. Next, 'Renegade' was recorded in 1967 by The Zodiacs. Review: Jaribu Afrobeat Arkestra are an entirely unique phenomenon, a Japanese collective pushing forward Neo-Afrobeat with heavy influence of the classic Japanese jazz sound and the long tradition of covering iconic western soul/funk tracks. Aretha Franklin's 'Rock Steady' is a collaboration with fellow Japanese artist Tina (aka Luv Tina), a decorated vocal powerhouse in the early 2000s R&B landscape, culminating in a mind-boggling genre mashup that defies expectations. The J.A.A. chorus section matches Tina's power perfectly with the blaring jazz instrumental, with phenomenal sax and trumpets. Swipe this coloured reissue before it goes again, you have to hear it to feel it.

Review: T. J. Johnson's 'Pretty Lady' is a glorious sweet spot between disco, boogie and funk that came back at the heyday for that sort of sound back in 1982. It's been dug out of the Switch label vaults which was a UK label run out of Lansdowne Studios. T.J. Johnson was a well-versed guitarist also known as T.J. Bedeau and he is still working the gig circuit today. 'Pretty Lady' is a slick and smooth groover with florid horn stabs and the sort of lush vocals that bring the love. 'Come On Let's Do It (Let's Rock)' is more upbeat and strident but just as warm.

Review: Danish-German production duo Cool Million (Frank Ryle, Robert 'Rob' Hardt) are specialists in nu-disco and neo-boogie. Until late, they've flaunted this expertise via their renditions of old funk standouts, be that from the likes of Donald Byrd or James Brown. Here, however, the pair team up with Tomas Thordarson for a front-and-centre G-funker of the squeeziest quality, 'My Life', whose lyrics match its form via mentions of 'cutting like a knife' rhymed, of course, with 'paradise'. The instrumental dub is just as glassy and arid, its standout element being the huge, zesty, quivering chords marking out the phrase transitions.

Review: Since the 1970s Danny Krivit has been a prolific re-editor. We're used to him cutting up classic cuts - think disco and soul, in particular - but he's never been afraid to turn his talents to contemporary cuts. That's what you get on this surprise Defected release. On the A-side he turns his attention to "Heaven", the killer gospel-inspired modern disco single from The Vision and Andreya Triana, turning in a version with plenty of drops, instrument solos and more emphasis on the righteous, life-affirming vocals. He's in a smoother mode on side B, extended and rearranging the rich and soulful dancefloor treat that is Kai Alce's Original NDATL vocal mix of The Dangerfeel Newbies' "What Am I Here For?" - a gem from 2016 that has previously been criminally overlooked.

Review: Some rare late night delights championed by the great Ron Hardy brought back to life on this one. Catherine Miller's 'Hunchin' All Night' from 1977 is good old fashioned disco that way it was intended, while Pam Todd & The Love Exchange deliver the life-affirming and timeless 'Can't Hold The Feeling' from the same year, and on the flip you have The Music Makers' classic 'Jump, Jump, Jump' from 1979 making RDY #48 a must have for disco lovers.

Review: Last year, Freestyle Records reissued 'Tonight's The Night', the 1983 debut from West London outfit Take Three - a collaboration between production trio S.H.E (Steve Sinclair, Peter Hinds and Kevin Ellis) and lover's rock vocal harmony group Alpha (AKA Marlene Richardson and sisters Jackie and Jean Heron). 'Can't Get Enough', another gem from the band's vaults, dates from 1985 and was initially released as their final single. In keeping with the group's roots, it comes in two contrasting mixes: a gorgeously dreamy, glossy and glassy 'Soul Mix' powered forward by squelchy synth-bass, mid-tempo beats and jaunty, jazz-funk style keyboard riffs, and the 'Reggae Mix'. As the title suggests, this radically alters the tempo and groove of the track - it's basically synth-heavy, mid-80s lovers rock - whilst retaining key elements of the A-side soul version.

Review: Hamburg based soul outfit Angels of Libra serve up a second single here in collaboration with Irish singer/songwriter Nathan Johnston. It's based on a bunch of instrumentals recorded on a TASCAM 388 8-track in a remote house outside Copenhagen by producer Dennis Rux with the group. The classic sounds were finished off with a more new school vocal style a la Anderson Paak to result in a track that is impossible to date but easy to love, with rich horns and seductive bass. It's a tune about the burning passion we all feel when we meet someone new and immediately fall for.
