Review: Breakbeats have been back in fashion for a hot minute now. They are reliable vehicles for many things - all out high energy raving or piano laced uplifting joy. We get a bit of all of that more on this new selection of remixes of Andonicus's 'Make You Whole' tune. Dusky go first with a feel good and euphoric sound that is old school in mood but new school in execution. Coco Bryce then deploys some of his masterful jungle breaks for a high energy trip and after a remaster of the big and bouncy original version comes a Smokin Jo dub that is pure fire.

Review: Platform 23 presents Ani-Roy, a project from friends Aniruddha Das and Gary "Roy" Stewart, who recorded two 12's of improvisational acid-house meets drone and samples in 1990.

They met over a love of principally reggae and post punk at Trent Polytechnic, Nottingham in 1982, and started combining equipment, to make tape loops and delays for exploring the basics of dub, all the while building their own Sound System.

This learning and experimenting converged their interests in early possibilities afforded for programming sounds and effects. They moved to London / Birmingham respectively and continued their collaboration until all things aligned in 1990. Coming together with Andrew Campbell, a community / social entrepreneur based in Nottingham - and with access to the Marcus Garvey Centre studios - they recorded two improvisational jams to 2 16 track; Ani arranging drum and bass lines, programming 'counter melodies' with a TB-303, and Roy looking after the ominous ambient loops, melodies, riot and Prince Far I samples.

The fact there were so many "versions" compelled Andrew to put the results out on two 12's instead of one. Fari 116 and Tilt were self-released on hand-stamped white labels.

Archival testaments, but set apart from the burgeoning acid house scene - here they are re-mastered and reissued some 30 years later by Platform 23.

Deep House
  1. Aurora (Mare) (4:27)
  2. Aurora (Terra) (5:21)
  3. Aurora (Cielo) (5:23)
Review: Aurora's superb self-titled EP was originally put out back in 1994. It is instrumental deep house of the highest order and comes as three different mixes for different moments in the night. 'Aurora (Mare)' is first and is doused in brilliant Balearic vibes and Italo melodies. The drums hit nicely while the pads take you head up to the stars. 'Aurora (Terra)' then comes on a little stronger with some of the textured stripped put and thereat taking centre stage next to the keys, then 'Aurora (Cielo)' is a perfectly heavenly sound to close out.

  3. Kez (7:15)
Review: Seminal reissue alert! Baby Ford had already been a chart-baiting acid house superstar by the time he launched the PAL SL label in 1996. He'd left behind the major label scene and moved firmly back into the underground with exploratory techno releases on Ifach and collaborations with Mark Broom. This new label marked a shift for Ford though, setting him up for the trips into minimalist club tracks that have been his bread and butter for decades now. From the machine soul trysts of "Slow Hand" to the woozy techno thrust of "Tall For His Height" and the atmospheric house wriggle of "Kez", this release is a classic through and through. Beat the sharks and nab a copy of this long out-of-print gem.

  4. Comet (Jonny Rock Micky The Meteor remix) (4:54)
Review: Nice to see legendary Australian dance outfit Boxcar receiving some renewed interest. The staples of the Sydney-based Volition Records were responsible for their fair share of dance hits throughout the '80s and '90s, one of their biggest being 1994's 'What Are You So Happy About?'. 'Comet' is taken from the 1990 LP Vertigo on seminal Canadian imprint Nettwerk. The original Robert Racic produced version came with a remix by Arthur Baker on the flip, while this version features re-rubs by (among others) Slow Motion co-head Fabrizio Mammarella taking the track into neon-lit Italo chug territory, while the ever reliable Jonny Rock delivers a trippy deep disco dub.

  1. Tribe Of The Night (6:31)
  2. The Beginning (5:38)
  3. Keep Me Inside (7:03)
  4. All About Love (7:18)
Review: Kerri Chandler's back catalogue is so deep that it will take record labels a while to run out of gems to reissue. The Tronisphere EP Part 1, which dates from 1996, is a lesser-celebrated but nevertheless superb four-tracker that here reappears on white vinyl. Opener 'Tribe of The Night' is pleasingly sweaty and forthright, with Chandler adding guttural vocal samples and hypnotic synth riffs to teak-tough beats, while 'The Beginning' is a jazzy, sub-heavy slab of mind-mangling late-night deep house. You'll find more bumpin' beats and echoing vocal samples on stripped-back flipside opener 'Keep Me Inside', while closing cut 'All About Love' is an emotive, immersive and melodious NYC deep house classic.

Banana Hill is a genre hopping club, DJ duo (JVC & Cervo) and record label founded in Manchester, 2010. Afrocentric, global dancefloor sounds of the past, present and future by the likes of Moroccan legend Majid Bekkas, XOA & Contours and Jinku have been previously featured. This new one by local producer Clay shows a breadth of dancefloor influences spanning broken beat like on 'People Floating', classic '90s house as heard on 'Shapes' (Dreaming mix) and the neon-lit night drive of 'Up There' heading into nu-disco territory.

Review: French game-changers Daft Punk's tours are always some of the most iconic in all of dance music. They took the band around the world at the height of their powers and in 1997 they dropped a live recording from one of the shows in Birmingham on November 8th. It contains a 45-minute excerpt of recorded during Daftendirektour which the band themselves said was one of their favourite ever live gigs. Plenty of their biggest hits of the time make the cut such as Homework cuts like 'Da Funk', 'Rollin' & Scratchin'', 'Revolution 909' and 'Alive' but they all sound vastly different when played live.

  4. Are You With Me Love? (5:14)
Review: After shining a light on the Garage'n'Breaks of Persian and the Bump'n'House of Brian Bristol, Mysticisms' journeys to a source of love and inspiration, the epicenter of the 90s NYC club music's explosion and development.

Better known as the team behind The African Dream on Eightball Records, they feature on many early 90s NYC who's who of labels including Movin', Strictly Rhythm, Tribal and Oxygen Music Works.

Released as a 12", a 2 x 12" the want of a lot of US labels at the time to mirror the success of Hip Hop saw an attempt to grow House 'projects' from club EPs to being seen as artists via albums. The EP starts with Opening, with warm keys that serve to show this is not your average four tracker, before soon giving way to the deep intensity of Dark Intervals. Tight drums and keys pushing, the vocal samples and swirling atmospherics all yield to a bass calling for loud sound systems.

On the reverse, an immense, spiritual take of NYC music in Innocence And Inspiration. Double bass, swirling arpeggio, tight claps, whistle strings, ridin' jazz fused break-beats and then pure piano cuts through.

To close, Are You With Me My Love?, here included to provide a repost to the grooves that have gone before. A song for sunset and sunrise, with lilting keys, shanty samples, vocal questions and a melancholic horn refrain.

Review: In 2009, longtime collaborators Frankie Knuckles and Eric Kupper made their production partnership official via the Director's Cut project. This epic retrospective gathers together the best tracks and remixes the duo completed prior to Knuckles' death in 2014. Disc one offers up original productions, including ear-catching re-makes of some of Knuckles' most famous early works (we're particularly fond of the versions of "The Whistle Song", "Your Love" and "I'll Take U There"). On the second disc you'll find the best of their remix work, with standouts including a sublime take on Candi Staton's "Hallelujah Anyway" and a storming, previously unreleased version of Lou Rawls' "You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine". As a bonus, the third disc mixes the best of the lot together in one suitably gorgeous, non-stop journey.

Review: The sorely missed talent of Spencer Kincy left many an overlooked gem in his wake, most of which has been slowly getting re-released over time since he left the music business. This EP previously appeared on Classic shortly before he stepped out of the fray and its not hard to hear the signs in the playful lyrics of the title track, but throughout the EP is the evidence of what a gifted house artist he really was. From the playful, bubbly bounce of the lead track to the heads down low end trip "A Taste", this is as strong a selection of house cuts as you're likely to hear all year.

Review: Gerd's archival Frame of Mind label continues to offer up reissues of sought-after European techno classics from the turn of the '90s. The latest 12" to get the repress treatment is Dave Campbell's second outing as Hi-Ryze, 1990 EP "Cyberia". Of the two versions of the Motor City-inspired "Cyberia" that are on offer, it's arguably the heavier, stripped-back "Lo-Pass Mix" that resonates most, though many will be attracted to the rave style stabs and crazy drum edits of the "Midi Edit". "After The Flood" is available in two variations, too: the filthy, bleep and bass-influenced sleaze of the "Harmo Bass Mix" and the rush-inducing chords and melodies of the "Optimistic Mix".

Review: Here's a genuine slice of history: a rare recording of a live jam from ambient techno explorers The Irresistible Force (AKA legendary chill-out room DJ and shiny space suit enthusiast Mixmaster Morris) and Ramjac Corporation (AKA Paul Chivers), which took place at gallery, shop and intimate acid house venue The Brain in Soho, way back in September 1990. It's a brilliant time capsule of a time when the template of ambient techno was yet to be fully fleshed out and sees the two performers take it in turns to combine immersive ambient synth sounds and hallucinatory electronics with oddball samples and, more significantly, basslines and drum machine rhythms inspired by the Chicago House and UK mutations of Detroit techno. An important and entertaining musical time capsule.

Review: Few labels have been as definitive for house music as Nu Groove, and now they tap up a pair of artists who have also done their far share to shape the genre at large. On one side is American mainstay Jovonn, who offers a spritely tune in 'Random' with skipping drums and edgy chords, while 'Get Over It' (Soulfrican Soul Bass dub mix) is a more warm and heady tune for cosy back rooms. On the flip, Swiss craftsman Deetron offers some peak time tackle with the big piano chords and incendiary hi hats of 'Dr Melonball' while 'V-NRG' brings some jacking old school disco sweat to close out a useful EP.

Review: Here's a welcome surprise: a reissue of one of the most revered records in the back catalogue of sadly departed Sheffield deep house imprint Toko. This 1997 gem is actually an all-star affair, with Klarky Cat (a reference to legendary satirical show Brass Eye) being a collaboration between Chris Duckenfield, Toko bosses Alec Greenhough and Paul Ingall (better known as Attaboy) and influential, overlooked Manchester producer Si Brad. In. its original form, "Gumbo" mixes the wavy, loved-up dreaminess of classic deep house with the organ sounds of U.S garage and the swinging, occasionally glitchy drums of early UK tech-house. It comes backed with a darker, chunkier and more foreboding rework (the mesmerising "Blooty Mix"), and the bright, acid-flecked sunrise giddiness of rather good bonus track "Custard Gannet".

Here the outfit's sole 12", which initially appeared on the legendary Nu Groove imprint, is finally reissued courtesy of Italian label Groovin'. It's full of timeless, bass-heavy deep house, with highlights including the chiming melodies, dreamy chords and chunky grooves of ''Rydim #1: Mello', the organ-sporting after-hours beauty of 'Rydim #1: Deep & Nice', the proto-house-goes-deep house haziness of 'Rydim #2 (version)' and the sparse, faintly foreboding throb of the pleasingly squelchy, intoxicating 'Rydim #2: 18 and Under (Aah)'.

Review: Alison Limerick's 'Where Love Lives' is the sound of a generation, a reminder of one of the most vital cultural movements of the last 100 years. It is a perma-hit that unites all ages, colours and creeds, even now, 30 years after it first got hands in the air and tears in the eyes on dance floors of cult clubs around the world. To mark the occasion it gets a special remaster treatment and 12" release for Record Store Day. The Classic Mix - which is still the best - kicks off, followed by a big piano version from Mo Knuckles and a darker, more stripped back Cut To The Bone mix.

Review: Alessandro Tognetti, Franco Falsini and Mario Piperno were the trio of Italian producers who came together for just one superlative EP back in 1993. They did so under the Man Myth Magic alias on Interactive Test and a copy of it will cost you upwards of 200 quid. Ne label Chroma goes someway to easing that pain by pressing up one of the tunes from it on a new 12". 'Different Places' (Velasquez Stage) is freaky deep house with spangled synths and filtered vocals smeared about the mix. The Big Eyes Weirdos version tweaks the original only slightly then then Wombient Dormient mix takes things even deeper.

Review: Originally released back in 1994, this was Italian house veteran Enrico Mantini's last appearance on UMM before Flying Records ceased to exist. One of his most highly sought after releases on the secondhand market, it has been played by underground heroes such as Zip over the years. On the A side, we have the deep and emotive mood music of "What U Want" (2021 Late Nite cut) with its classic Stateside swing - a true zeitgeist of a golden era. Over on the flip, new school heroes Chris Stussy & Djoko remix get onboard for a modern reshape followed by the original.

Review: First released way back in 1992, Stefano Curti, Mauro Tamino and Stefano De Carlo's first 12" as Minimal Vision (they'd previously released numerous as The True Underground Sound of Rome) remains one of the classiest and most ear-pleasing Italian deep house records of all time. For proof, check 'Magic Staircase', where picturesque synthesizer melodies rise and fall atop skittish beats, 'Pacific' style chords and a chunky Korg M1 bassline, and the bleep-sporting Chicago deep house tribute 'Prelude'. Those searching for something a little more energetic should take a listen to the warm and beautiful 'Milky Way' and 'Night of Love', whose programmed percussion, fizzing synth solos and jaunty bassline doff a cap to Detroit tech-jazz.

Review: One of the all-time greats of the house music canon gets a decent dusting down. If you haven't lost yourself in the sonic smoke rings of Mood II Swing's "Move Me" at some point then you're missing a fundamental part of the house music experience - from the infinite dubby chords to the swirling vocal and that groove, it's quite simply perfection. "Call Me" is also damn fine - a sharp and upbeat NY workout, but hold tight for "Function", a Gino Soccio-sampling funker ranks amongst the finest things John Ciafone and Lem Springsteen ever turned their hands to.

Review: During the late 1990s, Japanese producer Yuji Takanouchi produced a trio of sublime EPs, most of which went largely overlooked at the time. He surprisingly returned to action a few years ago with a handful of similarly dreamy, loved-up productions, prompting R&S offshoot Apollo Records - who famously released his peerless ambient house 12", Southern Paradise, in 1997 - to put together this superb compilation. The genius of his productions, whether dancefloor leaning or more horizontal in ethos, always lay in the hazy colourfulness of his synthesizer melodies and life-affirming chord progressions. It's those traits, coupled with his firm grasp of deep house and intelligent techno aesthetics, which shine through on Brand New Day. "Pacific Jazz", "Nite" and "Ocean In Heaven", in particular, are stunning.

Review: The Nightcrawlers' tune 'Push The Feeling On' is one of US garages most iconic. It was a hit on dance floors and in the charts all over the western world and was also what lay the foundations for MK's whole career. The dub version he served up became a signature sound for the producer throughout the 90s and beyond. That original 95 mix is included here and has the yearning vocals pacing about the mix, the snappy hits and warm, fat drums rolling down low. A Revisited version tweaks things only slightly and the Dub of Doom version is the most chunky and paired back of the lot with a slightly dark sense of menace pervading the whole affair.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged, but otherwise in excellent condition***

As part of their 15th anniversary celebrations, Sushitech has decided to reissue Mosaic Classics, a 2008 collection of late 1990s works from legendary British techno producer Steve O'Sullivan, this time on clear vinyl. If you missed out first time around, it's well worth picking up. Check first the early British tech-house-goes-dub-techno hypnotism of 'Cheques Not Accepted', before admiring the sub-heavy late-night skank of 'Touch Up' and the bongo-rich pleasantness of deep techno roller 'Breezer' (itself a collaboration with John Beer'). Also worth a listen is the chunkier and sweater - but nevertheless spacey - 'No Suzuki', which was originally released under the Blue Spirit alias, and the pumping, stargazing thump of 'Sac Magique' (as Wise Caucasian).

Review: In 1991 the UK is in a very different place to the one it occupies today. One thing that hasn't changed in the 30 years between then and now, though, is how incredibly, unbelievably good Primal Scream's Screamadelica was. And still is.

It might have been the studio mastery brought to the mix by the late, great Andrew Weatherall. Perhaps it hit the nail on the head of a year when the country's rock and dance scenes finally met somewhere on the outskirts of Blackburn, or along the M25. Maybe, just maybe, it's because the tracks themselves are just great. Whatever your personal take, this album should be on everyone's shelves. From the hedonism of 'Loaded' to the pseudo-rave euphoria of 'Come Together', and the self love of 'Movin' On Up' always inspires, the record is of its time but resonates through the ages.

Review: Chris Duckenfield and Richard Brown's Swag project also spiralled out into plenty of other aliases, labels and ventures over the years, but wherever you shore up in this archipelago you can be sure of the highest grade tech house gear this decade or any other. As it happens, Primitive Urges Vol 3 originally dropped in 1998 and it remains a vitally potent piece of club gear for those who like to get right into the reeds of an immersive DJ set. These are tools, with intricate rhythmic patterns for days, but they're also far more fun and loaded with character than the average DJ-friendly drum track. Just listen to the squelching swing on 'Track 3' and you'll hear exactly what we mean.

Review: There are classics and then there are classics. The original Rhythm On The Loose tune 'Break Of Dawn' deserves a class all of its own as it stands proud as one of the most iconic dance tunes of all time. The legendary main riff inspired by producer Geoff Hibbert seeing dawn break on an Italian coast line, the big vocal sample taken from 'First Choice's Let No Man Put Asunder', the punchy drums... it's got everything you need to blow up a big crowd. Here we get the original next to bounce remixes from Strike and Stonebridge. This timely reissue will fly off the shelves, and for good reason.

  2. Luv 4 Luv (Stonebridge club mix) (6:06)
Review: Have there been any remixes that have been more impactful and influential than StoneBridge's famous re-rub of Robin-S's 'Show Me Love'? An enormous crossover hit when it was first released in 1990, the track's blend of bold organ hooks, bumpin' beats, dreamy chords and big vocals later helped inspired the birth of what was then known as 'bassline house' or 'northern garage'. As this reissue proves, it remains a timeless dance anthem that transcends genre. This time round, it comes backed by a lesser-celebrated StoneBridge rework of another Robin-S track, 'Luv For Luv'. This is a bit deeper and sweeter, but mostly utilises the same musical ingredients (gravelly stabs, Korg M-1 organ lines, lush pads and so on).

  1. Make The World Go Round (Deep Dish vocal mix) (9:23)
  2. Ain't No Need To Hide (Deep Dish Sequel Reedit) (9:40)
Review: For the latest volume in their ongoing series of '90s house reissues, Champion Records has decided to offer-up a pair of classic remixes from Washington D.C duo Deep Dish. They were at the height of their powers when they got to work on Sandy B's 'Make The World Go Round' in early 1996 and their full vocal rework (featured here on side A) still sounds fantastic all these years on. Featuring many of their trademark ticks - think layered, swinging, tribal-influenced percussion, weighty organ bass and cut-up vocal snippets - it's a nine-minute epic that's every bit as good as their similarly celebrated remix of De Lacy's 'Hideaway'. Turn to the flip for a light-touch re-edit of their similarly epic, drum-heavy 1997 'sequel' rework of follow-up single 'Ain't No Need To Hide'.

Review: With a name like Chiwax you surely know what you're in for right? The German label serves up another Windy City classic by the legendary DJ Skull here - under his birth name Ron Maney - with the 2 Entities EP, originally released back in 1996 on the seminal Relief Records. A classic for those that know, it's got the spooky and minimalist shuffle of "Bring It Home" and the heads- down stomper "Reborn Souls" which is classic DJ Skull all the way, complete with its heady loops underpinned by skipping rhythms. On Side B, "Reconstruction" also has more of a mid-90's Chi-town techno sound, only this one's even more driving and nasty - a proper basement jam to be experienced under the strobe lights.

  1. Overcome (9:00)
  2. Lady Science (NYC Sunrise) (9:22)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Trelik returns with a repackaged edition of one of the catalogue's most treasured releases. "Overcome" and "Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)" need little introduction, and now come sporting the new TR11:11 matrix number. Written and produced by Thomas Melchior and Baby Ford aka Soul Capsule, these tracks came from one of the many sessions recorded at the West London Ifach Studio in 1999. On the A Side "Overcome" is stripped back and energetic, driven by rolling and shuffling garage style beats, tight bubbling bass and atmospheric synth pads. The intermittent vocal samples and the release's signature organ set you up for the flip, "Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)". Possibly one of house music's most emotive pieces, the track builds slowly with the introduction of each part building a story of soulful optimism based around a sparse palette of deep synths, uplifting keys and warm analogue bass. The understated beauty of the main vocal riff never seems to grow old or tired with the track lending itself perfectly to either main room, peak-time play or after-hours sessions alike. Remastered by Rashad at D & M.
