  4. Gibbon's Call (5:26)
  5. The Walk (6:31)
  6. Kennet River (6:23)
Review: Examine Alex Albrecht's small (but undoubtedly impressive) discography, and you'll find an atmospheric, opaque and undeniably dreamy mix of ambient, deep house and downtempo grooves. His calling card, then, is not his adherence to a specific style, but a love of immersive aural textures, sonic warmth and sunrise-ready melodic motifs. This trademark sound is to the fore on A Clearing, his first Mule Musiq outing. Check first the detailed, subtly dubbed-out deep house dreamscape of 'Stranger', before admiring the ultra-deep, half-asleep excellence of 'A Clearing' and the Latin-tinged, ambient house bliss of 'Cabin in the Meadow'. He opts for a Sprinkles-goes-Latin house flex on 'Gibbon's Call', fuses jazz-house and ambient on 'The Walk' and doffs a cap to Susumu Yokota on 'Kennet River'. In a word: wonderful!

  8. David Swatten - "Wave Energy" (John Beltran remix) (5:32)
Review: Since launching in 2018, Aaron Andrew's Chubby label has become a trusted - if frustratingly irregular - source of high-quality deep house. Their latest missive, the Aussie imprint's first release since the autumn, is their most expansive yet, with four fresh cuts (each with an accompanying remix) stretched across two slabs of wax. Aleqs Notal goes ultra-deep on immersive and hypnotic opener 'Planetary Insanity', which is subsequently given an equally spacey revision courtesy of Life Recorder. Cheerier and breezier deep house warmth comes courtesy of Jose Rico's 'Agonias' and Leonids slightly darker revision, while Nail's squelchy, early morning take on Ewan Jansen's bubbly 'Basillica' is one of the EP's standout moments. Arguably best of all though is John Beltran's gorgeous revision of David Swatten's brilliantly bittersweet 'Wave Energy'.

Another Bugged In Selection & Bugged Out Mix
Erol ALKAN/VARIOUS
Cat: K7 294LP. Rel: 31 Aug 12
Electro House
  1. Amin Peck - "Girl On Me" (instrumental edit)
  2. Ron Hardy - "Sensation" (Obi Blanche edit)
  3. Model 500 - "No Ufo's" (D-mix)
  4. Unovidual & Tara Cross - "Like I Am/Comme Je Suis" (Based On The Sling & Samo edit)
  5. Spandex - "The Bull" (Erol Alkan rework)
  6. Children Of The Night - "It's A Trip" (Mike Hitman Wilson's Psychedelic remix)
  7. Jan Hammer Group - "Don't You Know"
  8. Adjagas - "Mun Ja Mun" (instrumental)
  9. Buffalo Springfield - "Expecting To Fly"
  10. The Space Lady - "Major Tom (Coming Home)"
Review: Erol Alkan's 2005 Bugged Out mix was a gateway release for many, soundtracking the entrance into club land, yet also introducing these virgin ears to more esoteric strains of music via the accompanying Bugged In Selection. Some seven years on, Alkan and the evergreen club brand have revisited the concept with a second edition, and like the inaugural release, the Phantasy Sound boss's ever lasting love for the vinyl format has seen a selection of tracks make the translation to this double vinyl release. Six tracks from the Bugged Out mix appear, with the Italo disco of Amin Peck brushing shoulders with Model 500 and an Obi Blanche edit of the Ron Hardy classic "Sensation", while the Bugged In Selection sees some psyche-folk fare from Buffalo Springfield and Space Lady among other gems.

Deep House
  1. Recollections
  2. Many Years Later
  3. Recollections (The Cyclist mix)
  4. Recollections (Cloudface mix)
Review: Liverpool-based producer Bantam Lions has long been part of the Scenery Records family, helping label boss ASOK launch the imprint with 2012's One To One EP. Here he returns with his third 12" for the label. Lead cut "Recollections" is particularly good, delivering a deep and attractive fusion of fuzzy analogue warm, dreamy melodies and intoxicating chords. He ups the tempo further on "Many Years Later". Which layers dubbed-out chords and swirling textures over an energy-packed techno groove. The accompanying remixes are pretty tasty, too, with The Cyclist particularly impressing with his Detroit techno-goes-lo-fi interpretation of "Recollections". That said, the dreamy, new age-influenced downtempo take from Mood Hut regular Cloudface is pretty darn good, too.

Transcend (12")
Cat: RHM 039. Rel: 29 Dec 21
Deep House
  1. Transcend (9:09)
  2. Every Morning I Meditate (4:35)
Review: Rush Hour has been one of Europe's foremost labels for man a year. 2021 was no different with plenty of highlights, not least this last sneaky 12" from Lars Bartkuhn. The talented producer shows off his majestic style with a pair of deliciously deep and elegant house tunes. First comes 'Transcend' which is a real floater built on lush arps, serene strings and a dynamic groove that skips its way into your affections. 'Every Morning I Meditate' is a perfect soundtrack to do just that with its distant bird calls, bright spring day optimism and gently unfolding rubbery bassline. A fine outing indeed from this singular soundsmith.

Review: The Bush is a homage to the place where I have lived for the last decade (Askew Road). The Askew Road itself is slowly changing so I wanted to document all the places that play a big part in mine and my families' lives before they eventually get sold for more flats or Tescos. 002 was all about the mighty Sun pub which has now been sold and transformed into a Costa coffee and an estate agents. Next up is our local park which hopefully will never see change as its been our little slice of heaven in w12 since we moved here.

  9. Lost In Mind (feat Malou) (5:30)
  10. Ben Bohmer & Timo Jahns - "Cloud 21" (5:25)
  11. Little Lights (5:25)
Review: Gottingen-based producer Ben Bohmer has released a wealth of material since first coming to our attention earlier in the decade, yet "Breathing" still marks his first foray into the full-length format. Wisely, the German has chosen to mix things up a little, offering up a range of songs and instrumentals that are far less wedded to the dancefloor than his 12" singles. Of course, there are still a number of throbbing, peak-time numbers present - see the moody, warehouse-ready tech-house rumble of "Wall Of Strings" and the soaring progressive house rush of "Maelstrom" - but these generally sit between deeper cuts with extended ambient intros and outros, as well as more downtempo explorations of his warm, melodious and ear-catching trademark sound.

The result is Innervoice: Alex T. & Noe B's first album featuring 14 tracks pressed on three 12''. Featured are some spacey jams as expected, that cover a wide spectrum of moods and grooves such as the early UK Peacefrog techno vibe of 'Jinx', the gleaming late night rave mood of 'Move Me' to the downbeat alien funk of 'Future, Past, Present' and the intelligent drum 'n' bass experiment 'Utopia'.

Review: DJ and producer Tom Burford, aka. Contours, makes his debut for Slow Life in what is now his tenth EP to date, this time racking up a further 5 cinematic, live-tinged house tracks for all to take in. The Rhythm Section signee here strips back his normally overt emotive sound for a more dubious backroad, with lead 'Distant Memories' and 'Echoes Under Pass' traversing dubbier and more subdued territories than usual for the producer. Elsewhere, 'Kysuhu' and 'Projections' ease up the mystery for harder-hitting forays into electro slappage.

Tusk Wax Twenty Four (180 gram vinyl 12")

Deep House
  1. Telemachus
  2. Synth Run
  3. Haku Ten-O
  4. Telemachus (Whatever/Whatever remix)
  5. Ronin Love (dub)
Review: John Wilcox has been slowly disseminating crusty hardware jams for some six years now, in which time he's appeared as Cyclonix on Horn Wax, and now he nips over to Tusk Wax for more robo-charged antics in the curious corner of grubby, electro tinged house music the label orbits. "Telemachus" is a dreamy opening number that keeps the spook level up to maximum and the reverb voluminous throughout. "Synth Run" has a bit more bite, but not at the expense of atmosphere. Whatever/Whatever get hold of "Telemachus" and strip it down to a sparse skeleton of a track, and then Wilcox rounds the record off with the steppy ambient excursion "Ronin Love (dub)".

Deep House
  1. Te Conoci/Pia/Alejandro/Oooophi (26:24)
  2. Descanse/ADMSDP/Juntos/Mmmm (feat LA Warman) (22:10)
Review: DJ Python's hypnotic take on dembow is second to none. The New York DJ and producer can send you wild with the slowest of tempos and does that again here on his second superb album on Incienso. His tactile drum programming weaves and wanders beneath the most bendy and gooey of synth lines. The tension between those percolating drums and the star gazing keys and pads up top is what makes his music so enthralling - life is slowed to a crawl and everything seems to take on more beauty and resonance as a result. Tracks here are variously coloured with eerie vocal samples, field recordings or deconstructed jungle percussion, and every single one snakes its way into your mind, body and soul. "Mas Amable" may just be one of the albums of the year.

  9. DJ Sotofett & Gilb'R - "97" (riddim run) (3:50)
  10. DJ Sotofett & Gilb'R - "97" (outro) (1:55)
Review: Serial collaborator DJ Sotofett pops up on Honest Jon's with a typically excellent doublepack built around a quartet of studio hook-ups. Aside from Versatile boss Gilb'r (here lending a helping hand on some African-influenced ambient house), most of the collaborators are new additions to the eccentric Norwegian's out-there audio universe. The two tracks with Phillip Lauer and JKS - an intergalactic ambient affair and a chunk of early Fila Brazillia style deep house - are particularly potent, while there's something deliciously warm and evocative about the Norwegian's explorations with Finn Jaakko Eino Kalevi. Best of all, though, are the two tracks with African vocalists Karlolin Tampere and Maimouna Haugen; "Nondo Riddimix", which boasts deliciously dense drums and sparse, exotic melodies, is arguably the highlight.

Taubira Remixes (Prins Thomas, Josh Ludlow & James Rod mixes)
  1. Taubira (Prins Thomas Diskomiks)
  2. Taubira (Josh Ludlow extended edit)
  3. Taubira (James Rod remix)
Review: French pop-rocker Dombrance, aka Bertrand Lacombe, gets the remix treatment on Gouranga Music, and the results are a must for nu-disco diggers. As a logical lead-in Prins Thomas should need no introduction to anyone who rates modern-day disco magic, and he's on superlative form reworking 'Taubira' as a brooding epic with all the Norwegian flourishes you would expect from the master. Josh Ludlow opens up the B side with an extended mix of the track, teasing out the energy where it counts to make the peaks of the tune all the sweeter, and retaining a certain melancholic mystery in the process. James Rod closes the EP out with a driving, ominous version for those who want to take the dancefloor to spookier places.

Review: Last year, Mother Tongue Records released Madre Lingua, an album of all-star collaborations between broken beat and deep house musicians and producers helmed by Verona-based Brit Patrick Gibin. This 12" updates two of the tracks from the set, with Gibin once again to the fore. On side A, he joins forces with long-time friend and studio buddy Kaidi Tatham to remix EDB and Gary Superfly's 'Pressure'. Their tack is bouncy and synth-heavy, with spacey, out-there lead lines and intergalactic-sounding pads rising above a Maurice Fulton-as-Syclops style bassline and loose-limbed house drums. On the flip, Marc De Clive-Lowe remixes his own collaboration with Gibin and Tommasso Capelleto, 'Apollo', brilliantly joining the dots between spacey jazz-funk and ambient on a superb, beat-free 'Dreamscape' mix.

Review: Roman Flugel is back with his seventh full length titled Eating Darkness. The nine tracks were created during the coronavirus lockdown of 2020, and are testament to the Frankfurt legend's penchant for mixing elements of pop with sounds of the underground - a scene he has been affiliated with since the early '90s. A variety of moods and grooves are all delivered in his idiosyncratic style: from the woozy and broken slow burner 'Chemicals', to the majestic and spellbinding dancefloor drama of 'Wow' or the raw hardware acid jack of 'Jocks And Freaks' which harks to his days as Alter Ego. Elsewhere, there's the heartfelt and bittersweet ambient house of 'Cluttered Homes' and the downbeat bliss of closing epic 'Charles'.

  9. Blommenholm (5:06)
Review: Fuck Reality serves up its very first artist album here from Frantzvaag, who hails from Oslo, Norway and has a perfectly cuddly deep house sound. Heknows just how to deploy and aching vocal to really lock you in to opener 'Become' while 'Anyone Everybody' is more roomy, airy and leggy. Elsewhere, 'Dose' is all swirling pads and pastoral hues, '2001' has a crispy boom bap groove with heady pads softened the edges and 'Going Away' is a quirky and intoxicating groove with plenty of rich sound designs. The artwork is by well known artist Stefan Marx who helped give sister deep house label Smallville such a key visual identity.

  3. Benedikt Frey - "Girl From Venus" (feat jonas.san) (9:11)
  4. Romeo C & Alhan G - "Unforgettable" (3:32)
Review: Benedikt Frey heads this latest offering from the Batti Batti label, teaming up with jonas.san for "Girl From Venus", which pair the former's signature raw drums with the latter's outtakes of muted trumpet. Complementing this, Batti Batti's own Owen Jay & Melchior Sultana lay down a typically deep atmospheric houser with a few twists and hidden melodies in the shape of title track "Tribal Roots" and the 12" is further embellished by productions from debutant Lars Behrenroth and Mexican duo Romeo C & Alhan G who have previously been featured on a digital Batti Batti release.

Tamed Monsters EP

  3. Unbroken Dub - "No Way"
  4. Kurvenschreiber - "Falsche Storung"
Review: Tamed Monsters EP is an inaugural release of the new record label Pandora. New imprint will focus on ambient sounds, music for home-listening and unique artwork. The VA includes works from german producer Benedikt Frey, russian producers Shine Grooves, Unbroken Dub, and an ambient group Kurvenschreiber. Each artist offers a different sound, which lets the music evolve like a story and makes a nice combination of dreamy ambience and mesmerizing repetitive beats.

Review: By the time of their third studio album, English electronic pair Goldfrapp were already big news. Here they combined pop and electronic styles to critical effect, with a no 2 slot on the album charts coming in the first week of release. Lead single "Oh La La" went on to become the band';s biggest ever selling single and further singles "Number 1", "Ride a White Horse" and "Fly Me Away" also climbed high in the charts around the world. There's everything from in your face pop to glossy disco beats, glam style beats and lush synth ballads. Brash but beautiful, it's an English pop classic.

Review: The trend for throwback house sounds littered with spaced out vibes and old school video game vibes slows no signs of slowing down. This second outing from the ONO label outtta the Netherlands offers up four more such tunes, this time from Guy Contact. 'Desert Portal' is a textbook example of this sub genre with its fleshy pads and phased bass, ten 'Aquavision' layers up post-rave breakbeats with ambient synths that are beautiful indeed. There is also room for the turbo bendy bass of 'Spinifex Track' and soft acid undulations of the new age 'There Is No Orb.'

Review: Kalahari Oyster Cult is not only one of our favourite label names but also a damn good outlet for innovative deep house. This one comes from Helium, who has a sound that is well versed in the old school but always with its own added sense of freshness. 'Try Me' is gloriously positive and upbeat with a nice female vocal and lush melodic bassline. 'Clouds' (Captain mix) is then an interlude of suspensory pads that will keep you afloat above the dance floor and 'Out There' (Jody mix) closes down with an impossibly smooth and catchy house groove, spaced-out synth smears and future vibes.

Review: Detroit native Jason Hogans will not be a familiar name to many, despite the fact he has been putting out music - albeit sporadically - for 20 odd years. A release on Theo Parrish's hero-worshipped Sound Signature will always put you in the spotlight, though, especially when it's as good as this. The artist explores deep Motor City house, percussive broken beats and that shamanistic, off-grid sound that label head Theo Parrish is such a master of. Standouts include the airy, spacious beat work of 'Favorite Coffee Mug' and steamy post-jungle concoction that is 'For My Solids.'

Review: Just over a decade after his debut album landed in digital download stores, Janeret has finally got round to releasing LP number two, and this time it lands on vinyl in limited numbers. It's light years ahead of its predecessor and, sonically speaking, more in keeping with the immersive, sci-fi soaked deep house sound he's been cultivating over the last few years. The set begins with a classically intergalactic ambient excursion and ends with a sunny and jazzy slab of drum & bass, but in between we're treated to an impressive array of tactile, sparkling, shimmering and emotive deep house workouts seemingly tailor-made for late-night stargazing, escapist daydreaming and open-air DJ sets at sunrise. A genuine triumph from a producer on the rise.

Review: Prince of eclectic boogie Kasra V will release his sophomore EP 'Atlantis' through vinylonly house imprint LIPS this September 28th. Tehran-born Kasra has already built a solid reputation as a selector across London's underground circuit, with his bi-weekly 'Paradise' show on NTS Radio, plus various residencies and 22Tracks playlists. Flipping his focus onto production, his newest creations are a fusion of his own killer tastes with experimental techniques; the result being an intelligent melding of purist house, funky Balearic rhythms and synth heavy disco, all with a distinct middle-Eastern edge.

  1. All These Things (Theo Parrish remix vocal version) (13:55)
  2. All These Things (Theo Parrish remix dubstramental) (8:53)
Review: With its complex arrangements, attractive musical elements, ambient textures and jazz-flecked instrumentation, Kuniyuki Takahashi's music has long been a gift for remixers. Mule Musiq has taken advantage of this in the past, commissioning a slew of reworks of his tracks in the late noughties and early twenty-teens. These superb Theo Parrish versions of 'All These Things' date from 2008 and have been reissued as part of a new series of Kuniyuki reissues. Parrish's A-side remix is as wonderful as you'd expect: a 14-minute epic in which glassy-eyed vocal snippets, aquatic synth motifs and ultra-deep ambient pads rise above a deliciously jazzy deep house beat. The flipside 'Dubstrumental' is chunkier, jazzier and sparser, sound-wise, offering a marginally weightier alternative to the inspired A-side rub.

Brecht delivers a minimal and acoustic remix - pan pipes included - for his version, while impressive Scottish producer Lord Of The Isles follows up a release on the Shevshenko label with a inspiring and synthy remake to an original filled with tinges of jazz and forest ambience.

Review: Sebastien Leger has done a fine job of reinventing himself in recent times. He is now very much part of the dreamt yoga house sound that can be heard at places like Burning Man, and on labels like this one. It's all about crafting a groover that can roll on uninterrupted for hours, then gently colouring in the airwaves above with wispy pads, a hint of Eastern melody or exotic percussive sound. And that is a trick he mastered on his return to All Day I Dream across three cuts of impossibly breezy, seductive house music that are designed for open-air parties in summer.
