Cat: SUB 013. Rel: 26 Aug 22
Minimal House/Tech House
  1. Aerofunk - "Idea"
  2. 4D - "1 Step Bck 2 Steps Fws"
  3. Josh Baker - "Somebody's Watching Me"
  4. Croft - "Levi"
Review: Subsequent is doing a fine job of offering up cutting-edge sounds from the UK underground. This 13th EP is a various artists offering with just that on both sides. Aerofunk's 'Idea' kicks off with warped bass and drilling synths that hark back to golden-era tech house. 4D gets more cosmic on his silvery '1 Step Bck 2 Steps Fws' and new school stalwart Josh Baker gets all twitchy and paranoid on the jittery 'Somebody's Watching Me.' Last of all is the gritty and grimy tech bumper that is Croft's 'Levi'. This is fresh club music ready to do damage.

Minimal House/Tech House
  1. German Spring (7:15)
  2. German Summer (7:16)
  3. German Fall (7:12)
  4. German Winter (7:00)
Review: German duo Andhim have been rolling out their epic strain of melodic techno and electronica for more than 12 years now, and they're still as inspired as ever. Once more appearing on their own Superfriends label, they're exploring a seasonal concept on this record which reflects on different times of year in their homeland. The vibes are perhaps to be expected, with 'German Summer' coming through as the big feel-good anthem for festival stages versus the brooding tech of 'German Fall'. It's 'German Winter' where things get more resolutely melancholic, though never at the expense of the beats and dynamic twists and turns.

Minimal House/Tech House
  1. Hazy Recall (Airdrop mix) (5:53)
  2. Drown It Out (6:00)
  3. Shadow Boxing (7:01)
  4. Analyze, Socialize (5:13)
Review: James Bangura steps into the ring with his new Shadow Boxing EP which is named in honour of his grandfather, Carroll Daniel Smith, who boxed for the US Army in WWII. It's a punchy take on tech house from the off, with 'Hazy Recall (Airdrop mix)''s off-grid beats swinging in from all directions with same the potency as a Mike Tyson uppercut. 'Drown It Out' has a garage swing to it as it slips and sides as fluidly as Mayweather's defence and 'Shadow Boxing' floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee. Last of all is 'Analyze, Socialize' which will have you on the ropes and sweating in no time.

Review: Bicep's second album is shaped by the experience of touring their debut long player for something like three years, a period during which they honed and perfected their instinct for tracks that would stand the test of time and repeated listening. What develops is a distinctive style typified by a combination of ethereal sonics and cheeky, memorable instrumental hooks, only set to a variety of beats that reference and indeed fuse the plethora of different dance genres that have sprung up since the acid house revolution if the mid-80s. So we get everything from the electro-tainted 'X' to 'Rever', where an African choir floats over a subtle deep house shuffle and 'Saku', where UKG bass pressure and skippy beats provide a hypnotic background for Clara La San's sweet but ghostly voice.

Where Are You?
Cat: CS 034. Rel: 26 Sep 22
Minimal House/Tech House
  1. Where Are You?
  2. Stop
  3. The Way
Review: Three nicely varied offerings from the Constant Sound label's co-owner James 'Burnski' Burnham, headed by the ridiculously catchy and unashamedly party-stoking 'Where Are You?', where hyperactive, clipped vocals add a new dimension to the sturdy, garage influenced house grooves that have become one of his trademarks. 'Stop' is cooler and calmer, jazzy vibraphone tinkling making way for nudging keyboard stabs, and delay-heavy reggae vocals and brass flavouring the irresistible shuffle of closer 'The Way''.

Review: The Chemical Brothers are back with their 10th studio album (mixes and soundtracks not withstanding), and they're sounding especially fired up. The widescreen stadium psychedelia they've made their own spills out in abundance across "No Geography", but it's also matched with a feverish energy. The more up-tempo tracks, like "Gravity Drops" and "Eve Of Destruction", spit and snarl with the best of their classic, down and dirty dancefloor material, but there's plenty of space for the starry eyed songwriting they've made their own in more recent times. Just cop "The Universe Sent Me" and be immediately transported to a festival field, where you'll no doubt be catching The Bro's this summer.

  4. Den Haas - "The Spot" (6:41)
Review: Synkronized is just three releases deep now but is already an assured and reliable outlet for fresh house sounds. This latest offering takes the form of a various artists EP and opens with the brilliantly spaced out electronic house of'Lorenzo Chiabotti & Just_Me's 'Darko FM'. It's a silky one with balmy pads that encourage you to dive right in. Martin M's 'Pleasure Minds' then strips things backed to a nice and empty but rolling groove and on the flip Chad Andrew & Imbue get crunchy with their broken beats. That leaves just Den Haas with his mellifluous and pillow deep house cosmic delight, 'The Spot.'

Review: Over the last few years, Andrea Mancini has released many fine records as Cleveland, most of which offer a trademark take on techno and tech-house laden with interesting sounds, tribal percussion, and notable nods to British bass music. It's a hugely attractive formula all told, and one he further explores on Golem, the Luxembourg-born producer's second EP for Kalahari Oyster Cult. Each of the three original tracks on show has its own unique flavour, from the out-there, intergalactic post dubstep techno of 'Trullo', and the sunrise-ready futurist techno voodoo of 'Forest', to the Livity Sound-in-space brilliance of 'Golem'. Label-mate Junes does a great job remixing the latter track, with his impressive version thrillingly joining the dots between hypnotic tech-house, broken techno and creepy breakbeat.

Review: Ecuadorian maestro Nicolas Cruz is back on Rhythm Seciton to follow up his last EP Subtropique which proved a big hit. "I'm always trying to re-interpret this Afro-Caribbean feeling, and trying to figure out how I could humanize this through the machines," he says of his approach and it certain is the case here. He mixes up some worlds rhythms with twitchy techno drums and electronic synths to make for something totally new on all of the tracks. The heavy, skipping kicks of 'Residual Heat' is a real favourite while 'Self Oscillation' is a catering percussive jam to pack the floor. Another great outing.

Review: Washy and stompy are the words to describe three new bits from DJ Tennis (Manfredi Romano). Pumping acid house merges into dubbed-out dreams, with an emphasis on 16-note fills and 2-step breaks ruling the mix stews that make up 'Repeater' and 'Nobody'. Meanwhile, needing no introduction, DJ Seinfeld brings up the rear with a remix of the A1, with a creative flair that could only mark his own unmistakable territory; extra space, boxy kicks, hazed-out chords. This one renders us permanently nocturnal.

Review: There is a new hound in the pound of Berlin label 777. Dogpatrol bares his teeth with this razor sharp EP of visceral electro. The brilliantly titled 'Came Back From Hell & I Feel Good' opes up with roaming synths and slivery percussive slices over booming drums and broken beats. There is more space in the nimble drums of 'Safari Simulator' while 'The Deep Valley Of Self-Neglect' has a heavy, pounding and linear groove. 'Usingmyquirk' brings a haunting vibe with its low end oscillations and shimmering pads and 'Granular Memory Experience' is a wonky and kinetic machine workout for the afters.

Review: After first stepping out on Rhythm Section, Dopeness Galore, Phonica and Echovolt around 2017, Earth Trax has been on a rapid rise which has landed them deeply in the Shall Not Fade firmament. Following two LPs for the label in 2020, now they're back with The Sensual World, an 11-track masterpiece of modern club gear that moves from spine-tingling techno thunderclaps to psychoactive electro. At all times there's a strong melodic impulse and a woozy beauty which softens even the spikiest elements in the sound. As a result, you're left with some seriously workable club tracks that can inspire emotional responses as well as physical ones.

Review: Shall Not Fade is Black Loop's esteemed house label, and it recently spawned a new sister imprint Bassment Cracks, which deals in more hardcore and direct grooves. Fir this one, Ron Elliot joins the family with some seriously weight cuts. Fresh off the back of winning the AVA's Emerging Producer award, he is in top form here with 'Haarlem' a bristling cut built on old school drum breaks and glistening melodies. There is also crunchier techno and then blissed out post-rave bangers like 'Sweaty Fiver' on the a-side, and plenty more body rocking beats on the flip.

Review: Rising Greek producer G.U.S. steps up on Equivalence with some pumped up vintage techno sounds that take more than a few cues from the UK. "Shelf Cloud" strikes a fine balance between tough and dreamy, using a twitchy set of drums moving at a decent pace and flooding them with atmospheric pads and a slice of vocal that forms a central hook to the track. "Halo" goes even deeper into British territory with its chopped up breakbeat funk calling to mind the dexterous sample magic of Stasis, and then "Haze Phenomenon" heads into deep tech house territory riding a pumped up shuffle beat and swooping pads.

Review: Jon Mace is Inkipak, a new name who has impressed with a quick and busy run of releases on labels like Ping Disc, Mighty Force and Glawiio Music. This time out he lands on Magnonic Signals with four more tracks of brilliantly designed and lush techno soundscapes. 'Confine' opens with a far-sighted sense of forlornness over bumpy breaks. 'Outbreak' then cuts lose with plunging bass and starry eyed melodies that take you far off into the cosmos and 'Alastria' continues the voyage with crunchy percussion and bleeping melodies. 'Omichron' is as catchy as the virus it is presumably named after.

A milestone in any musician's career, the LP illustrates the breadth of Rob's tastes and influences, exploring the rugged terrain of planet electronica. Ranging from breaks and electro to house and techno, Battle of The Planets was made during lockdown, a period of creativity and isolation for many artists around the world. Across 10 skillfully produced cuts Rob takes us on an intrepid adventure into the cosmos, where mysterious atmospheres and uplifting melodies sit side by side with captivating dance floor rhythms. Many shades of his personality come through on this album, all tied together by his unique sonic identity; informed by his years spent on the dance floor, behind the decks and in the studio. On Battle of The Planets Robert James presents a distillation of his extensive knowledge and experience into one succinct, highly engaging body of work.

Review: It's been a hot minute since Timothy J. Fairplay slipped on his Junior Fairplay guise, but he's done just that for this bleep-tastic new 12" on (Emotional) Especial. "End Of Love" is unabashed in its embrace of early Yorkshire techno tones, making a fine job of resurrecting the bleep spectre and letting it shake up the dance once more. Roy Of The Ravers is a smart choice of remixer, and he brings an off-kilter acid rub to the table in his idiosyncratic, braindance-inflected style. The B-side is equal laden with purposefully dusty dance grooves transplanted from the late 80s / early 90s, with "Faxes From The Future" hitting a particularly sharp point in its lazy breakbeat roll and the clanging harmonies of the stabs.

Review: Strange happenings are going on down at Scrutton Street, EC1. With release after release cementing the names of those based or working out of the studio bunker, a desire for pushing the boundaries of electronic music is primary with little concern for what's hip. So if anyone can Tim can and here with his newly birthed pseudonym comes Junior Fairplay. With a one-sided release and remix to his name on Crimes Of The Future a glimpse has been offered of what's in store, but How Do You Like Me Now? gives it straight. Pioneering and back to the British techno of early Black Dog, Reload, Stasis and of course, the seminal "Selected Works" clearly inspires, but so too does one of those musical moments where genres clash, tear and stretch as something new is being born. It all starts with the uplifting House anthem of Classic Version, eschewing the oft-tasted horror stylings and aims direct for that 4am MDMA airfild rush, before the EP drops, locks and spins on it's axis, with 3 pure breaks cuts to overload the senses and say, now is the time! A voyage to another side to the mythical lost chord via a moment in time where open filds, abandoned warehouses, the kick of 4/4 house, hip hop breaks and the dub of sound system culture merged but for a short while. Not house, not rave or jungle. A proto sound born of blood, sweat and Rage.

  4. How Soon Is Now (Dewalta Metaverse remix) (6:38)
Review: Hector's Vatos Locos label has slowly but surely put out a steady stream of contemporary minimal and tech house cuts but now it might have the biggest EP on its hands yet? the main man, Swiss Chilean innovator and menial pinup Luciano makes his mark in collaboration with Dani Ramos on two new cuts. 'How Soon Is Now' is all gurgling synths, dark cosmic tech funk and meandering basslines that are designed to warp your mind at 5am. 'Ufo's Call' is an even busier flurry of whirring machines and raw percussive hits, balmy circular pads and punch drums. Two Dewalta remixes seal this great deal.

  4. Plunge Pool (6:28)
Review: Luke's Anger is well directed here across a lively techno EP that chews up plenty of different influences. The opener is a bouncy one with glitchy percussion and kinetic kicks all run through with wiry synths. 'Space Grunge' barrels along at high speed with laser-like synths shooting over its face and 'This Is Sirius' slips into an old-school electro-techno vibe with tons of reverb and a super sweet groove. 'Plunge Pool' is another characterful cut with weird sound sources, pinging drums and watery effects that sure will get the floor going.

Review: Having built up his self titled label alongside his sterling work as part of Oscillat, Lazare Hoche and Will & Ink, the one and only Malin Genie delivers his debut solo album. Moving beyond the pure club focus of his singles and EPs, the Genie has seized this opportunity to present a widescreen panorama of his sound, leading in with the subliminal ambience of "You" as a springboard to explore breaks, electro, techno, and especially IDM. There are so many ideas swirling round Anthropomorphic Sympathy, it's hard to know where to begin describing it. A true headphone commute for the deep listener to burrow into.

  3. No Data (7:12)
  4. Shanty Town (5:58)
Review: The SlapFunk crew have another new recruit for their mission to match minimal dance aesthetics with tough old-skool punch. Danish producer Martinez has plenty of experience having released everywhere from Guidance to Moon Harbour and Minibar, and he sounds right at home freaking the funk for the Dutch contingent. There's a straight up strut to the jacking drums on opener "Inter Species Relations", while "Aspired Commotion" slips into the kind of wriggling shuffle you'd expect from a SlapFunk release. "No Data" adopts a skippy 2-step stance with some eerie textures on top, and then "Shanty Town" finishes the record off with more swinging business peppered with delightful keys.

  3. Escape & Evasion (6:44)
  4. Halo (5:25)
Review: REPRESS ALERT!: Pilot comes correct with a third new release in quick succession. We were big fans of the first two and this one is another muscular, action packed slab of wax from North Phase. Once again he draws on many different genres to cook up his floor filling beats. 'Electronic Funk' is a bit of a throw back to when the Plump DJs were good, while 'D1000' then gets more down and dirty on scuzzy bass and electro pops. 'Escape & Evasion' is the most heady of the lot with its sparse atmosphere and old school breaks and 'Halo' closes on a cosmic borne beat wig out.

Review: 3 track EP by Overlords of the UFO, including 2 previously unreleased tracks and one track released on an earlier EP named Transcendental Overdrive.

All tracks were produced in the late 90's.

This EP continues the trademark retro sci-fi analogue synth vibe of Overlords of the UFO and is the 2nd release by Enlightenment Records.

  2. Re-Wild (Breaka remix) (5:20)
  3. Corner Of My Sky (feat John Cale - Coby Sey remix) (8:44)
Review: The righty much venerated Kelly Lee Owens has tracks from her recent Inner Song album remixed on Smalltown Supersound here. Loraine James opens up with a take on 'Wake Up' that is all broken beats and abstract electronic sounds. 'Re-Wild' then gets a Breaka remix which layers in plenty of UK continuum vibes, skittish perc and bass heavy drums. Last of all is 'Corner Of My Sky' as reworked by Coby Sey, and it is a busy drum workout for tribal dance floors that will pin you to the ground.

Inner Song Remixes Part 2

  1. Jeanette (Haider remix) (5:13)
  2. On (Elkka remix) (8:36)
  3. LINE (Yazzus remix) (4:31)
  4. Night (Roza Terenzi remix) (6:05)
Review: Kelly Lee Owens' sophomore album, Inner Song, rightly received plenty of praise when it hit stores earlier in the years, with critics warming to its attractive blend of celestial electronica, drowsy pop and experimental techno. These remixes - the second of, we think, two EPs of revisions - do a great job in pulling Owens' tracks in ace new directions. Haider brilliantly re-imagines 'Jeanette' as a moody '90s jungle freak out, while Elkka re-imagines 'On' as a melodious techno number rich in bubbly melodies and glistening electronics. Over on the flip, YAZZUS' version of 'LINE' sits somewhere between footwork and clanking industrial techno, and Roza Terenzi's revision of 'Night' joins the dots between vintage ambient techno and mid-90s Orbital.
