Review: Julio Ernesto Estrada, simply known as Fruko, is a Colombian composer, multi-instrumentalist, and orchestra leader who pretty much gave salsa its name from the early 1970s. You go ask any serious DJ who is into South American music, and the name Fruko will no doubt get dropped on a regular basis. In fact, up until now, this man's records have made themselves scarce on the second-hand market, and there is a very particular sort of crowd whose willing to spend big money on them. A La Memoria Del Muerto is his second LP, from 1972, and what is perhaps the man's most definitive work. It's just one of those albums that runs fluidly from start to finish, showcasing all of its native beauty with effortless skill and furore. Rampant trumpets, seductive piano keys, kinetic percussion, and a sense of tropicality make this into a spectacular piece of work.

Review: Harold Orozco Rengifo was a driving force in the new wave of beat-driven rock and funk that swept through Colombia in the late 60s and early 70s, which took some influence from US and British rock and gave it an unmistakable injection of Latin flair. One of his most treasured projects is Harold Y Su Banda, responsible for one sole record of funky perfection in 1975. Evolucion is a digger's delight, featuring the kind of universal but also incredibly geo-specific grooves that add so much depth and breadth to a set. There's a good reason why this is considered one of the best records of the 1970s.

Each tune brims with vitality and skilled musicianship as trombone, accordion and deep bass are all layered up and led by rebel accordionist Alfredo Gutierrez. This is a copy of the original tracklist but with the addition of three hot new bounces cuts and some liner notes. Noted singer Lucho Perez of Sonora Dinamita fame is the final addition and brings extra flare to each of these irresistible jams.

Review: La Pambele is a salsa orchestra from Bogota formed in 2021 by Miguel Rodriguez and Camilo Toro, and their debut album finds them delivering on their stated mission to champion the sound of late-60s New York salsa. This is salsa as it was originally expressed - a street-level, grassroots music for communities played with raw passion and joy - there's no doubt La Pambele have captured the feel of the music as it was more than 50 years ago. Lorena Jimenez and Miguel Morebolledo spar perfectly on lead vocals, while the expansive cast of players roll in perfect harmony for a faithful continuation of one of Latin American music's great traditions.

Review: La Sonora Mazuren's Bailando Con ExtraNos is a flame hot fusion of worldly sounds. Funk, Latin and soul are the foundations but plenty of regional styles like cumbia, guaracha, champeta and psychedelic melodies all add extra colour. It's rhythmically playful and restless from the group about which we know very little. This is their debut album after a few singles since 2019 and for those who like their music percussive, expressive and free flowing it is about as good as it gets so do not sleep on this limited bit of Colombian gold.
