Honest, live and funky, the tracks span two sides of the same coin, with 'I Know You Feel It' a convincing slo-mo funk edit, and 'What A Night' a cosmick, reverb-laden freakout version of a Japanese obscurio.

Once again it is a blue-eyed gem that forms the source material for the pair to impress with their own versions. Review: Taken from Lorraine Johnson's first 'Album The More You Want' released in 1977 on Prelude Records and produced by Jesse Boyce and Moses Dillard, this single has been reissued many times over the years but always shifts. It's a textbook bit of floor filling r&b, disco and soul complete with a brilliantly well defined bass riff, soaring Philly strings and an empowering vocal from Johnson. Review: Athens of the North boss Euan Fryer recently described Premonition as "the best obscure New York boogie act you've never heard of". He'll be releasing an entire album of their rare and unreleased material later in the year, but first he's treating us to a reissue of their best-known moment - impossible-to-find 1986 soulful boogie slammer "Don't Act Like A Fool". The track ticks all the right boxes -rubbery slap bass, mid-80s FM synth sounds, passionate male lead vocal, needless but delicious sax and electric guitar solos etc - and is little less than an overlooked dancefloor heater. On the flip you'll also find original B-side "In Love", which Fryer brilliantly (and accurately) describes as a "mid-tempo floater".

Review: Some hand-stamped 7" white-gold here with Beactconducter serving up a couple of brilliant disco dazzlers for late night sessions. 'The Drag Stop' pairs some aching soft-rock vocals with tumbling congas and chunky disco drums that march on wards and upwards as the synths bring some cosmic drama. On the flip is a more retro sousing disco gem with 'Something Better' (edit). It has funky drums and piano chords dancing next to hip swinging finger clicks and some big vocals. Review: Disco re-edit master Moplen has been busy touching up this Jackie Moore gem with sprinkles of his studio magic. The original vocal remains in tact as the trumpets and funky drum breaks power forwards the groove below. A vocal mix makes more of the sublime soul tones and then come two further versions on the flip. The Breakdown remix is one of big breaks but nothing detracts from the lung busting performance of Moore. Last of all is a Chin-mental mix so you really have plenty to chose from.

Review: During the heady days of the 2000s and early 20-teens, Sheffield scalpel fiend The Popular People's Front offered up a string of essential re-edit EPs. He's been rather quiet of late though, with this collection of fresh dancefloor "Ammo" marking the Steel City producer's first outing for four years. He opens by applying his touch to a lolloping disco classic (you'll know it when you hear it) before offering up an on-point revision of YMO's "Computer Games" that first surfaced - without being released - back in the 2000s. Over on side B the Sheffield veteran adds a vintage (we think) Elektrons acapella to a dubbed-out, low-slung disco workout (track three), and then goes all weird, electronic and forthright on the bonkers-but-brilliant closing edit.

Review: Legendary DJ and edit king Mr K is back on Most Excellent Unlimited with the latest in their essential collaborative series. As always this is a slab of wax that offers up two gorgeous cuts that have been skilfully cut down to a maximum 7" 45rpm format. The first is Luther Vandross's 'Funky Music (Is a Part of Me)' which David Bowie later reworked to become one of his many hit singles 'Fascination.' In its original form, it has rickety soul grooves and lavish stings next to the soaring vocals. The tune second is Zulema's 'Giving Up' which has a dramatic intro, Mr K remasters it and allows the rolling piano, great string ensemble and guitar sounds to really cut through clearly. Two bonafide dancefloor delights.

Review: By now, you should be familiar with the "Soul Is My Salvation" seven-inch series, which sees gospel-loving DJ Tone B Nimble showcase some of his favourite gospel-soul, gospel disco and gospel boogie gems. This fifth 45 in the series is just as essential as its predecessors. On side A you'll find Fay Hill's 1981 single "I Know Who You Should See", a languid, jazz-funk era shuffle through glassy-eyed gospel soul pastures blessed with one of the most addictive choruses we've heard this year. Review: Since launching in the summer of 2017, Alex Attias' edit-focused LillyGood Party label has consistently delivered the goods. It helps that Attias' approach to re-editing mirrors original scalpel legends like Danny Krivit - think killer rearrangements with no cheap production trickery - but this would mean nothing if the selected material was below-par. This time round he's on a Latin-tinged jazz-funk and disco tip, first teaming up with brother Stephane to deliver a superb, horn-heavy rework of Onward International's 1985 all-dayer slayer "Foot in the Door". It's a righteous and funk-fuelled affair guaranteed to bring a dose of sultry sunshine to any party. On the flip, Attias goes solo to lovingly extend Elbertina "Twinkie" Clark's 1981 gospel-fuelled disco-soul treat "Awake O Zion", with predictably fine results.

Review: Donna McGhee's "Make It Last Forever" has long been one of the most sought-after disco albums around, in part due to the quality of Greg Carmichael and Patrick Adams' production and the seductive nature of the superb title track. It's been reissued on vinyl a few times over the years; here it gets a rare outing on CD thanks to Wewantsounds. 41 years after it was released, the set still sparkles, with highlights including the dewy-eyed disco-soul bliss of "Do As I Do", the warm and super-sweet "Mr Blindman" and the total insanity of "I'm A Love Bug", which is a fantastic overhaul of Carmichael and Adams' earlier Bumble Bee Orchestra cut "Love Bug".

Review: Rather infamously, Donna Summer wasn't a fan when she heard the final version of this legendary disco tune. It was one of the earliest big disco tunes to use synthesizer sounds rather than live musicians and is still one of producer Giorgio Moroder's biggest-ever hits. Summer though didn't like the way her vocals had been so sexualized in the final edit. Either way, that didn't stop it from becoming an iconic disco cut that still gets floors in raptures today. This reissue comes on marbled red vinyl.

Review: By now, we shouldn't need to tell you that the Tone Be Nimble-curated "Soul Is My Salvation" series of gospel soul obscurities is nothing less than essential listening. He's dug out two more little known gems for the sixth volume in the series, and once again they're simply unmissable. The A-side sports the Gospel Miracles' little-known 1985 treat "Building Up Myself", a Leroy Burgess-esque chunk of soulful warmth full of intricate musical flourishes (including a bassline reminiscent of that Burgess's Universal Robot Band used on "Barely Breaking Even"). On the flip you'll find a more driving chunk of gospel soul-funk fusion from 1977 - the equally inspired "Don't You Worry" by Serenity, a pretty much unknown combo whose music was produced by sometime Barry White collaborator Doug Lambert.

Review: This more than handy 7" single brings together two classic disco-era cuts from soul legend Willie Hutch. A-side "Easy Does It", which was originally featured on 1978's In Tune album, features Hutch in full-on Curtis Mayfield mode, singing passionately over a jaunty, jazz-funk influenced backing track laden with swirling strings, choral backing vocals (think Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" album) and Dexter Wansel style synthesizer solos. It's undoubtedly one of Hutch's finest moments and deserves to be in any serious soul head's collection. Review: Disco mixer Mike Muarro has been delivering tasteful, multi-track remixes of disco and soul classics for the last couple of years, and earlier in 2021 delivered a digital-only set of revisions of classic cuts from the Philadelphia International catalogue. This must-check 12" contains two of the most potent reworks from that set. On the A-side you'll find his epic, beautifully executed revision of MFSB's brilliant 'Love is the Message', which features rearranged elements and Tom Moulton style builds, drop outs and instrument solos. He takes a similar approach on the flip, wringing maximum energy and release from the O'Jays 'Message In Our Music' without adding any unnecessary instrumentation. Review: Originally released in 1974, "For the Love of Money" is a soul/funk song that was recorded by Philadelphia soul group The O'Jays for the album Ship Ahoy. The lineup at the time comprised of Eddie Levert, William Powell and Walter Williams, It was written and composed by Anthony Jackson, Leon Huff & Kenneth Gamble, and produced on the latter's Philadelphia International Records. The original pressing was issued as a single in late 1973 with "People Keep Tellin' Me" as its B-side. The single peaked at number three on the U.S. Billboard R&B chart, and at No. 9 on Billboard's Pop Singles chart in spring 1974. "For the Love of Money" made the group Grammy Hall of Fame Inductees in 2016.

Review: Disco and boogie crate diggers aside, few have heard of Sass single "Much Too Much", which helped launch NYC label 25 West way back in 1982. Props then to Be With for licensing it and offering up this reissue, because it really is a largely overlooked gem. Head first for the A-side full vocal version, where a loved-up male lead vocal rides a slap-bass-heavy groove rich in glassy-eyed chords, D-Train style synth squiggles and unfussy boogie beats. The flipside instrumental version is if anything even deeper and dreamier, with a little more use of the squiggly synth solos (an effect usually created by pressing the keyboard's LFO trigger button, fact fans) and greater emphasis on the tidy slap-bass part.

Review: Produced in 1986 by one Willie Harpe, 'Give It Up' was originally written by TL ('Tom Lipkins'), a fake moniker for little-cited artists George Mahood and Soul Sam. Never before seeing the light of day, it's a testament to just how little talent corresponds with recognition in the music market - this is heartbreaking music, produced with the utmost quality. 'Give It Up' combines loose drumming and a misty, boxy reverb on the master to produce a red-lit mood of sultriness, as TL wails and belts over a dozy soul groove. Review: DC archival masters Peoples Potential Unlimited first shone the light on Dwight Sykes and his Jahari project on the must grip Situations cassette late last year, revealing the work of a key player in Michigan's underground boogie scene. Those selectors out there without the means to play tapes in a club setting will no doubt be very thankful to PPU for this 12" that brings together some unreleased demo cuts from Jahari along with a newly remastered version of the superb title track from that cassette. So up top you get two alternate takes on "Fire & Desire" with the studio version a real funk gem, whilst "Situations" sounds all the more sweet and soulful in newly remastered form.
