The Other Side Of House
Review: A New World, the second artist album in as many years from D'Marc Cantu shows that he should be viewed as being the master of his own destiny rather than an engaging sideshow to more high-profile associates Traxx and James T. Cotton. The lack of Jakbeat, the primal interpretation of Chicago house that the Nation stable of artists have developed, is notable here, When it does rear its grungy head, it does so in the most irresistibly creepy manner; "Green Bike Sea" starts with rolling snares and leads to a grainy bass and shaking percussion underpinning muffled vocals and bleeding acid lines. "Try Me" is meaner and yet more suggestive, with the scent of blood and sweat-caked bar counters rising over a red-lit, heaving bass. But the real highlights on A New World occur when the producer completely indulges his esoteric whims. "Mobile Communication" sees heavy claps supporting bleeding, bleepy bass licks, but it's merely a prelude for "The First Planet". Inspired by Detroit techno, it's Cantu's piece de resistance: atmospheric synths arc slowly upwards, their acidic undercurrent like tail lights on a jumbo jet as they reach into the upper levels of the night sky, hopefully guiding Cantu towards greater recognition.

Review: Cio Dorbrandt returns with her latest full length since Die Faser on Prologue in 2009 showcasing her penchant for breath taking sound design and some of the most well executed exercises in hypnotic techno. On one hand you have the stunning cinematic soundscapes of "After & Before" and "Now And Then" where she supposedly worked alongside accomplished session musicians to brilliant effect. Then come the mindblowingly complex futurism of "Tomorrow Was Yesterday" and "XXXIII" where she reminds us just why she is heralded as one most imaginative producers in modern techno music. And how could we not mention the other worldly epic that is "XLIV for Mike". Essential listening.

Triplet (4:40)
Review: Self-styled "sound architect" and "music creator" Cio D'Or has been strangely quiet since releasing a 'special edition' of her "All In All" album back in 2016. Comeback EP "Fluidum III" is really rather good: a fine collection of alien electronic workouts that sound like they were created via modular synthesis. What we get is six tracks built around watery sounds, swelling electronic motifs, spaced-out noises and occasional quirky rhythms. While some of the tracks - particularly "Climate" and "Celestial II" - boast deep but weighty kick-drum tracks in the techno tradition, for the most part the tracks are sparse, alien and devoid of dancefloor intent. The results are consistently alluring, albeit in a strange and spaced-out way.

Review: Throughout the noughties, UK producer John Harvey delivered sporadic bursts of Detroit-influenced, atmospheric techno brilliance on Delsin under the D5 moniker. Here, the long-running Dutch techno imprint looks back on Harvey's often-overlooked career, gathering together a scintillating range of classic, lost and forgotten gems over a sumptuously packaged triple-pack. What shines through most is Harvey's effortless grasp of mood and melody, with each spacey, heart-aching composition coming smothered in classic Motor City melodies, supernova chords and glistening electronics. Whether heading for the dancefloor via hypnotic, rolling groovers, or showcasing his love of IDM and ambient techno for those feeling the post-club sofa vibe, Harvey rarely got it wrong. An essential purchase.

Anom Valley (5:31)
Review: Anom Valley follows Damcase's recent outing on Bunker and positions the Greek producer as a leading light in hard techno. There is a rough, raw feel throughout this release for Bas Mooy's label; "Delete Scene" is mired in distorted kicks and noisy, barb wire percussion and both "Rusty" and "Towards Them" resound to titanium-powered steel drums. "Interlogon" is probably the most extreme track, thanks to its grisly, punishing rhythm, but Damcase also has a funkier side. He showcases this on "Rn 45" and "X Gun", where hypnotic electronic pulses, although encased in weeping layers of white noise, see him get his groove on.

Nautical Dawn (4:32)
Review: Long-serving Swedish producer Joel Mull, previously best-known for his club-focused techno sets, first started work on Nautical Dawn, his first album under his occasional Damm alias, over a decade ago. Inspired by the natural phenomenon of 'nautical dawn' - that point when the sun is not yet above the horizon, but bathes the sky in vivid colours - he wanted to make music for the break of dawn that combined home-made field recordings with suitably drowsy, opaque electronic motifs, slow-burn ambient chords, tactile aural textures and, when the mood took him, horizontal and hypnotic beats. It may have taken him a while, but the resultant set is little less than inspired: an evocative set of enveloping compositions that tease and tingle the senses.

Review: London label Cartulis Music has struck gold with this release, turning to Swiss producer Dan Piu for a much-needed vinyl edition of his 1999 album Self Education. Renamed Living In Fear and featuring a rearranged, remastered grip of 11 tracks, it's hard to believe techno this inventive and original managed to stay as a limited CD release for so long. There's a rough and ready Midwestern techno finish to many of the tracks on offer, but between the tough impact of certain sounds there's a great deal of subtlety to enjoy throughout this album. Surefire floor workouts like "Self Education" meet with playful hip hop experiments to make for a wholly enjoyable, not to mention surprising, listening experience.

Review: It's amazing to think that Jay Daniel is still only 25. Since making his debut five years ago, the producer has been responsible for some of the finest house music to emerge from Detroit in recent times. Interestingly, he's slightly modified his woozy and gently soul-flecked blueprint on this hotly anticipated debut album. For starters, many of the tracks - standouts "Paradise Valley" and "Knowledge of Selfie" included - feature live drums, played and recorded in his mother's basement. This rhythmic adjustment gives Broken Knowz a far looser and warmer feel than his previous work, in the process elevating his deliciously rich and musical deep house to a whole new level. In other words, it's an impressively assured and entertaining debut album.

Review: Dirk Deseaver is widely regarded as something of an underground hero - a Belgian producer whose mid-to-late'80s productions joined the dots between minimal wave, EBM, industrial and new beat. One of his best-loved projects is Danton's Voice, an alias he used to release a handful of EPs in 1989. This mini-album brings together the best of that work in remastered form. Highlights are plentiful, from the throbbing, strobe-lit new beat hypnotism of 'Yoruba', to the TB-303-fired acid trip of 'Magic Mushroom' and post-EBM creepiness of 'Kick Your'. The alternative mixes on side B are well worth a listen too, especially the sublime (and lusciously melodic) rework of 'Yoruba'.

Review: Since first emerging from the sleepy backwaters of rural Sweden in 2013, ambient explorers D.A.R.F.D.H.S have been impressively prolific. This full-length for Field - a typically fragile, immersive set that joins the dots between droning creepiness, soft-focus beauty and icy electronica - is their seventh in total, following excursions on Opal Tapes, Clan Destine and Total Black. It's as intoxicating, enjoyable and heart wrenching as ever, with spine tingling melodies wrapping themselves around weightless synthesizer chords, dreamy rhythms and other-worldly textures. There are positive moments, of course, but for the most part it's beautifully poignant, as if the duo is mourning the loss of a dear friend.

Review: Finding its home among the shadiest and most cutting-edge of labels, Jonas Ronnberg and Michel Isorinne's DARFDHS project has always been a favourite of ours since their inception back in 2013. They return to the excellent Northern Electronics with an extended LP, eleven cuts of sporadic, noisy pseudo techno to wreck both your speakers and your jaws. From "Hatets Sanger" through to "De A Dar Vi Kom Ifran, A Dit Vi Ska, Sa De A Lika Bra A Borja Vanja Av Sa Me A Leva", we are immersed in a world of icy sonics that range from the violent and beat-driven, to the utterly placid and desolate. If you're looking for a journey around the tech sphere, this'll surely do it!

Review: Chicagoan duo Big Mike T and Kenny Gino have used many monikers over the years - Ghetto Godfathers, Le Soul Mediques, Black Ops, Cozmic Jazzz Futurist - but it's been a long time since they wheeled out the Dark Matrix alias. In fact, Gravity Wave is the long-serving duo's first release under the pseudonym since 2002. It sees them paying tribute to the early days of Detroit electronic music, effortlessly joining the dots between futurist techno and outer space electro. Of course, you'll hear other influences across the album, too - Dutch electro, Italo-disco and slightly harder European takes on techno can all be heard within the machine beats and melodies - but it's their love of the Motor City that shines through.

Review: The Detroit-born producer now based in the United Arab Emirates has already been transmitted to the rest of the world through Civil Music, and Body delivers a full-length album to drag listeners head first into his dubbed out amalgamation of techno, house and bass music. Maverick methods abound, from tough swinging techno to beatless wonder, but all the way through Farah binds the wild ingredients together with a muggy tension that makes the album utterly engrossing. While the tempo and intensity switches between every track, there's an incredible consistency that holds the entire album together perfectly.

The Twin Paradox Series 002 spans pretty much every corner of the electro sphere, starting with the deep and watery bass tones of "Der Lange Weg", the 80's sounding sequences of "Die Welt Der Farben", and the underwater beast that is "Widerspruch". The fifteen-track anthology also includes harder tunes such as "Everything But", the Drexcyian mutant "Zugang", and "Talk To Me", a vocal led piece with a huge low-end and the most gorgeous pads we've heard this week.

Review: Techno stylist and Berlin scene icon Dasha Rush chases more sublime and ethereal electronic magic out of her machines on this magnificent new album, Contemplating (which has artwork that is just as good in our view). This record is a deeply immersive trip into a world of transcendental ambient charm where balmy chords wash over you like gently break waves, refracted vocals add a human touch and intricate layers of harmony are forever on the move to make for a meticulous tapestry of minimalistic sonic majesty. It's an album that pleases you in a state of mental stillness and bliss and is both otherworldly yet introspective.

Review: Data Memory Access is the fun-loving duo of Jacopo Latini and Giammarco Orsini, two Italian artists who've mastered the art of cathartic breakwork. Showing that instantiating ecstasy in the listener is an art unto itself, Yearning For Cobalt comes as their first album, and contains ten tracks that do no less than lay the depth on thick. Fans of Bicep or Indopan will be satisfied, as lead cuts like 'Cobalt', 'Nowhere' and 'Transcendence' deal in chorus-doused vocal samples, spitty breaks and awestruck pads of wonder.

Review: Left Coast electronic music producer Dave Aju and The Invisible Art Trio have joined forces once again to deliver Glossolalia, a powerful seven-song album that defies conventional genres and transcends cultural differences. Recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic at the legendary G-Son studios in Atwater Village LA, Glossolalia is a timely and uplifting call-to-action that reflects the turbulent times we live in. With its twisted grooves and every song's lyrics in complete gibberish, Glossolalia takes listeners on a complex and nuanced sonic journey that leaves us with as many questions as answers. It is a testament to the power of collaborative music-making and a reminder that, despite our differences, we are united by our love of music and our shared human experiences.

Review: Earlier in the year, modern minimal wave and coldwave hero Marie Davidson signed a high-profile deal with Ninja Tune. Here, she makes good on that contract, following a couple of killer singles with what could be her strongest album to date. After setting the tone with clandestine, tongue-in-cheek opener "Your Biggest Fan" - a creepy spoken word cut taking aim at stalker-line fans to the accompaniment of heavy analogue synth bass and creepy computer bleeps - Davidson giddily flits between elastic dancefloor workouts (the brilliantly sleazy "Work It" and mind-altering "Workaholic Paranoid Bitch"), attractive post-EBM instrumentals (the psychedelic and fizzing "Lara"), meditative ambient melodiousness ("Day Dreaming"), bizarre experimental weirdness (the suitable dystopian "The Tunnel"), and stylish analogue pop (the whispered vocals and off-kilter early morning funk of "So Right").

Review: Montreal-based producer Marie Davison's fourth full length was her most self-reflective to date. This reissue reminds us of how it found the artist serving up plenty of introspection after a year spent living in Berlin. It comments on the stresses and strains of working on the dance music world and of a life in club culture. It is an immersive and absorbing world of synth heavy beauty that builds on previous dance floor orientated material with new sounds. Italo disco, proto-industrial and electro all feature with plenty of hefty bottom ends.

Review: Hamburg crew Smallville managed to find their own unique niche in the deep house world right from the off. Their family of artists all had a cuddly, lo-fi, heartfelt take on the genre that has spawned countless classic LPs and 12"s, all with great artwork from Stefan Marx. Next up to add his voice to the conversation is Joe Davies with his new album Shields In Full Sunlight. It is a trip that has a lingering emotional impact such is the tranquility of the sounds and meditative nature of the grooves, which are embellished with wispy pads and subtle vocal sounds.
