Review: Drumcode's A-Sides compilation provides a timely opportunity to showcase the full range of its sonic repertoire, with Adam Beyer scrupulously selecting unreleased tracks that have taken prime position in his sets over recent months. Part four of the seventh volume features another bunch of heavy hitters such as UK AM specialist Alan Fitzpatrick, who collaborates with Hotflush head honcho SCB on the furious warehouse stomp of "Untitled" followed by fellow Brit Boxia who serves up the evocative and transcendental groove of "Final Call". On the flip, Hungary's Jay Lumen channels the heyday of '90s trance effortlessly on the euphoric "Stella Luce" while Canadian Weska closes out the EP by taking you aboard an acid express direct into the stratosphere on "Other Places".

  4. Walrus - "Free City Light" (5:26)
Review: A sticker on the front of this 12" from Brussels-based Basic Moves proudly proclaims that 100 per cent of sales royalties will be donated to charity. It's a nice move and one that should guarantee that the record is taken even more seriously. Like much of the label's output, it boasts self-styled "outsider club music", this time from Casablanca-born DJ Booth and label co-founder Walrus. DJ Booth handles side A, first romping his way through a bleeping, intoxicating, peak-time techno club jam ("Defaulted (Industry)"), before reaching for the breakbeats, deep electronics and electro shuffle on the superb "The Door". On side B Walrus takes over. "Can't Get New Shoes" is a bubbly, acid-fired chunk of electro/techno crunchiness, while "Free City Light" is notably deeper jazzier and way more melodic.

Review: Johannes Auvinen aka Tin Man sure has proven himself to be the reigning acid master with a mastery over that little silver Roland box that's possibly unmatched. Back on LA home turf Acid Test, he this time teams up with Manchester duo Jozef K and Winter Son for the Fates Unknown EP for some truly soulful and emotive deep house featuring Tin Man's unmistakeable synth leads over some sombre piano and pad led deepness on the title track. Interdimensional Transmissions Erika from Detroit reworks the track into a more lo-fi and dusty rendition yet retaining Tin Man's gnarly 303 work; you could imagine them dropping this one at No Way Back that's for sure. On the flip is yet another gorgeously emotive epic in the form of "Pendle By Night" which proves to everyone just how you make a dark journey track with the perfectly executed dance floor drama.

  4. W8 (feat Cold) (6:20)
Review: Waage is part of the new generation of Icelandic dub techno producers orbiting labels like the long-standing Thule. His second release appears on XOZ, following 12"s from the likes of Yagya, Exos and more. "W5" is a tough affair with bloated kicks and a subtle swing in the groove, all the better to let ripples of delay ping between. "W6" takes a more chugging approach to the beat programming, but the mood remains heavy and gritty. "W7" lightens things a little with some airy chord processing, and then Cold chips in for a collaborative effort on "W8" - the most tender track on the 12".

  4. Rx
Review: For the debut of New York's anticipated Purple Trax label, a new formation of key players in Brooklyn's underground debuts with an EP sure to entrance fans of L.I.E.S., White Material, and other established NYC labels. Composed of Terekke, local DJ/producer Jan Woo, and Erez Avissar, label head and founder of the respected Weird Magic parties, Wabi Sabi's dusky and diverse sound comes from its origin in loft jams, but tracks like the closing 'Rx' with its powerful dub techno framework show the work of seasoned talents. Patricia's cameo on 'Casper' is the record's strangest sound, a propulsive house groove with explosions of crackling texture and a bassline deeply buried in fog, while 'Babi' stutters along between the drum pulse and its disappearances into deep wells of delayed vocal samples and gentle melodies. Vibes are saved for the opener 'Moon River Membrane', where Terreke's characteristic cosmic haze comes out more heavily, complemented by the genre-bending psychedelic tendencies of Avissar's programming and Woo's weighty low-end.

Review: Lo-fi techno specialist Beau Wanzer brings the heat once more on Robert Bergman's ever more impressive Dutch label Brew. He wastes no time in getting down to a raw and arresting groove on "Flesh Flush", which has freaky voices stitched into the high pressure drums. "Take Your Trash Out" is murky, dirty techno heard through a filthy sonic filter. It's perfect for grotty warehouse spaces and last of all "Morning Pain" gets brilliantly unhinged and wonky, with some manic lead synths taking you down the rabbit hole. This is discomforting techno for unsettling dance floors.

Review: A four-track acid EP by veteran producer Warlock, out on Kalbata's Brush & Broom label. Ex-amount of jaw-grind action from the London underground legend. "Violent Rays" and "Swearings" are both straight-up warehouse workouts, comfortably placed next to reflective after-hour gushers "Run DC" and "Cave Tone". Once again, Warlock demonstrates stunning crisp production, touched by old-school heritage, dating back to pre-94 legislation times. Essential.

Review: UK house don Wbeeza comes through with Purple, a second release on his own PFlymusic label which continues to push his Pekno manifesto - that's techno direct from the heart of Peckham for the initiated! If you are a fan of Wbeeza's output on Third Ear you will be all over this 12" (and if you are not what's wrong with you!) which commences in fairly unrelenting fashion with the industrial strength concoction of kicks, hats and criminally minded bass lines that is "Masterz of Disasterz". Following this, Wbeeza turns in a nicely submerged 2014 edit of "Day By Day" from his 2010 LP Void, whilst robot voice aside "I Want You Know" focuses on a sound not too dissimilar to some of the bruk vibes that were emanating from West London circa 2003 and is a considered highlight!

  4. French Stu
Review: After a strong run of releases between 2013 and 2014 that saw the likes of Hakim Murphy and Mark Forshaw grace their grooves, III Rivers are back in action with a sterling new effort from apparent debutant producer Dane Weaver. The techno foundations of the label sound as strong as ever on "Atom Soup," which charges ahead on firm but malleable arpeggios with an acidic undertone. "In The Clear" is a more wriggly affair with a swung groove and plenty of off kilter delights for wonkier dancefloors. "A Brief Trip To Space" opens up the B side with some delightful anchorless tones, and then "French Stu" burrows deep into the outer realm of machine manipulation in a gritty demonstration of leftfield techno.

  1. The Spell (Burial remix) (7:57)
  2. The Spell (Charles Webster dub) (6:54)

Review: Almost two decades have passed since Charles Webster's last solo album, the largely overlooked collection of hushed deep house and downtempo soul gems, Born on the 24th July. Soon he'll finally release a follow up, Decision Time, but first he's treating us to a teaser single, 'The Spell'. Webster's vocal and dub mixes - the former featuring the seductive spoken word vocals of poet Ingrid Chavez - are typically immersive, ultra-deep house affairs that combine analogue electronic instrumentation with hazy, crackling aural textures that come courtesy of surprise collaborator Burial, who cites Webster's sound design as a major influence. Arguably the most striking mix though comes from that man Burial, whose A-side interpretation is drowsy, deep, crackly and irresistibly opaque: an artistic marriage made in heaven and then some.

Review: Long-serving Brazilian techno titan Redolfo Wehbba made his bow on Drumcode earlier in the year, delighting the Swedish label's army of fans with the Eclipse EP. Here he returns with what may be the first and only EP ever named in honour of a kitty's chocolate starfish. "Catarse", the aforementioned title track, is something of a bombastic, big room techno roller; a thumping affair where dreamy, saucer-eyed riffs slowly rise above an intense rhythm track. While good, it's arguably not a patch on the ragged intensity of opener "She Lost Control" - all ricocheting drum machine fills, wild electronic riffs and rumbling bass - or "Mind Awake", a throbbing, sleazy and downright intoxicating workout that contains some distinctly dystopian noises.

Review: Typically, General Elektro isn't giving much away about the identity of the producers behind "new collaboration" Westend, or their aims for the project for that matter. Musically, it's a quietly impressive debut that features a sextet of tracks mostly built around gently undulating synthesizer arpeggio lines and moody electronics. Many of the tracks are stripped-back, hypnotic and beat-less, deriving their power from the relentless thrust of the arpeggio lines that ripple across the sound space. Others, meanwhile, include ghostly electro drums or, in the case of the bombastic "Track 4", the kind of no-nonsense, kick-drum-driven beats that were once a feature of the greatest Electronic Body Music releases.

Review: After Gunnar Haslam inaugurated Kalvanic Languages with his deep-minded techno styles, now it's up to supposed newcomer Bill Westerby to follow up with another round of elevated machine learning. "K-Stream" was a smart choice for the lead track, bubbling along on a warm acid line and shuffling a wealth of dubby processing around in the middle distance. "Down A Back Alley In Cholon" is a slightly more wound up affair with a bleepy lead and a firmer jack powering the drums, but the end results are actually more meditative than that description might have you believe. "Caye De Crabe" is a more overtly tripped out affair with polyrhythmic phrases weaving in and out of each other while Westerby lets rip on the parameter tweaks in a fine display of machine wielding prowess.

Review: After dropping the Cosmic Path album on Infrastructure last year, US techno veteran Damon Wild returns to Synewave with some further ruminations on the relationship between space and electronics. There's a plethora of starry-eyed sounds to latch onto on "Comet Finder," which launches with a shuddering rhythmic chassis and a galaxy of intertwining synth tones. "Shadows" takes things in a deeper, eerier direction, while "Other Places" drops back even further into a minimalist shaker laden with heavily reverbed acid blips. The "Muted Mix" of "Comet Finder" is an icy, beatless flip of the lead track perfect for sending an interstellar chill out of the speakers.

Review: There's plenty to set the pulse racing within this new set of remixes of tracks from Seb Wildblood's superb album "Sketches Of Transition", which dropped on All My Thoughts earlier in the year. Our pick of the bunch is the superb Suzanne Kraft remix of "Amelia", which wraps glistening '80s guitar sounds and fretless bass notes around a chugging, arpeggio-driven groove, though many may gravitate towards the tight but undeniably groovy and melodious Jenifa Mayanja deep house version of "Small Talk". Elsewhere, Ciel re-imagines "Bahn" as an intoxicating chunk of bleep-laden broken electronica/Balearic fusion, while object blue impressively chops up "Sketches" into a sludgy, mind-altering style.
