  3. Michelle - "Aesthetic" (7:11)

  6. Yu Su - "Brittney" (live mix) (8:27)
  7. Adam Pits - "Wind Tunnel" (5:07)
  8. DJ Sports - "Needs Dub" (4:11)
Review: Needs' commendable charity drive continues to bring forth the goods, both in terms of good causes and world class club music. Rallying round in support of World Mental Health Day 2020, Shanti Celeste kicks the record off in style with the rapid fire, deep-diving workout 'Fantasma'. OCB keeps the pressure up with the psychotropic techno of 'RS3', while Michelle works up some delightfully freaky synths on playful jacker 'Aesthetic'. Bobby's 'Free Your Mind' is a 90s-tinged, full fat techno production indebted to Detroit, Peder Mannerfelt keeps things stripped and raw on 'Our Levels' and Yu Su weaves a beautiful tapestry of interweaving rhythms on 'Brittney'. Adam Pits' trippy techno sounds resplendent on 'Wind Tunnel' and DJ Sports completes the set with the inventive, dembow slanted funk of 'Needs Dub'.

Playing With Toys EP 1
Playing With Toys EP 1 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: TRMV 101. Rel: 15 May 17
  1. Esther Duijn - "Twinkle Eye Galaxy" (6:26)
  2. Brothers' Vibe - "Dee's Drama" (6:05)
  3. YouANDme - "Playing With Toys" (6:36)
  4. Silent Rodgerz - "Cruise Control" (5:52)
Review: Tony Rodriguez has many strings to his bow already as Brothers' Vibe and the head of Mixx Records, and now he's embarking on a new venture in the shape of the Toad Red label. Focused on a harder-edged sound than the deep house he's normally associated with, Rodriguez has invited Esther Duijn and youANDme to join in the fun with some finely crafted techno for open-minded dancefloors. Meanwhile there's an original BV jam in the shape of "Dee's Drama", while Rodriguez also unveils a new modular-focused alias named Silent Rodgerz. It's a new chapter for the New Jersey mainstay, and it promises exciting things to come in the future.

  5. Vulkanski - "Key Protest" (6:05)
  6. Puritan - "Whitesnake" (6:18)
Review: The second Murder Records EP is another uncompromising collection of brutalist techno. The Tbilisian label enlists Fractions & Zanias to open up with a stormy flurry of synths and frosted drums then Alessandro Adriani layers up more mechanical drums that demand you march while the brine frying synths melt your mind up top. Years of Denial then looks to EBM for its inspiration on 'Reverie' with deadpan vocals and haunting cold wave synths. This is caustic and coruscated stuff from start to finish that is best heard loud, in a super blackened and raw space.

  1. Dune (5:24)
  2. Stay (6:34)
  3. Meaning (DC Salas remix) (5:56)
  4. Meaning (5:59)
Review: Feines Trier is an electronic music party and record label based in Cologne, Germany. Their latest comes from the pairing of Dominik Marz and Yannick Labbe. The three tracks on the Dune EP are "an invitation to lose oneself in textures, sounds, melodies - all wrapped up in loop-based arrangements." From the Balearic tinged minimal house of the title track, to the deeply emotive groove of ''Stay' and its moody chord progression, the EP gets off to a good start. Then Belgium's DC Salas (Correspondant) delivers a remix up next of 'Meaning' that injects a proper dose of techno and turns the track into a peak time rocker, and closing it out is the track in its original form.

Gerudo EP
Gerudo EP (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: PHONICA 027. Rel: 16 Oct 19
  1. Zip (5:18)
  2. Guevenne Groove (5:52)
  3. Fret (5:32)
  4. Gerudo (5:10)
Review: Under the Yak alias, Steel City producer John Randall has previously plied his wares on Version, 3024 and R&S, offering up distinctively percussive tracks that sit somewhere between techno and bass music. His latest outing - this time for Phonica Records - delivers more hard-to-pigeonhole goodness for discerning dancefloors. Opener "Zip" peppers African style tribal drums and raw Motor City techno bass with the kind of ear-catching bleeps that were once a Steel City staple, before the jumpy and upbeat "Guevenne Groove" wraps positive, glassy-eyed synthesizer motifs around sweaty, loose-limbed live drumming. "Fret" is a spaced out, bass-heavy two-step number laden with intergalactic electronics and undulating bass, while closing cut "Gerudo" brilliantly joins the dots between tribal rhythms and shimmering deep house.

Sky Kings EP (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: VGNR 07. Rel: 27 Jul 20
  1. Sky Kings (7:09)
  2. Cellular Entanglement (7:20)
  3. Unfurling (9:04)
Review: The levels of intrigue continue to run high around the rapidly developing Vigenere label, as the Malin Genie-helmed label continues to showcase lesser known talents operating in more adventurous corners of the techno domain. Yard One are a UK duo split between London and Manchester, and you can certainly here a rough n' ready soundsystem attitude and the ghost of classic '90s techno permeating the textured, knotty rhythms on opening cut "Sky Kings". "Cellular Entanglement" takes things in a more serene direction, but not at the expense of crisp beats to propel the twinkling synths along. "Unfurling" presides over the flip with a mystical atmosphere that should appeal to those who like their techno oceans deep and dubbed out to perfection.

  1. Years Of Denial - "Girl With Broken Head" (6:20)
  2. St Theodore - "Metallo" (6:14)
  3. Djedjotronic - "Nod" (4:36)
  4. Velvet May - "Lips Of Lusting Fury" (4:58)
  5. SOJ - "Fleshing Out" (feat HIV+) (5:06)
Review: We rather enjoyed the first volume in Soil's "Valley of Tears" series of compilation style EPs, so hopes are naturally high for the second instalment. Like its predecessor, there's much to enjoy throughout, with the collection of unsung heroes, rising stars and underground stalwarts involved all hitting the mark with their contributions. Check first the crunchy creepiness of Years of Denial's electro-new wave fusion opener "Girl With Broken Head", before admiring the sparkling top-end synths and muscular EBM-meets-Italo-disco grooves of "Metallo" by St Theodore. The EBM influence is even more obvious on Djedjotronic's punishing and ghostly "Nod", while Velvet May also tips a wink to Nitzer Ebb on "Lips of Fury". Further discordant, mind-altering intensity is also supplied by SOJ and guest HIV+ on "Fleshing Out".

Functional Combinations & Collaborations Vol 1
Cat: NSR 022. Rel: 17 Aug 20
  1. Scam Pan (feat Giom) (6:26)
  2. Murmurs (feat Alleged Witches) (6:10)
Review: Yila, an ex-Londoner based in Ljubljana collaborated with two Dj's: French London based Giom and Slovenian Alleged Witches.

The combinations were the focus; each person bringing their unique style, this natural melding deciding the genre without confines, guided by the Dj's understanding of what works in the club.

Sprinklings of nostalgia meet a future thinking fusion of dance music with a focus on slick production. There is a subject matter; not expressed through the contrived mind but through a subconscious sonic delivery, allowing the political nature of the music speak for itself.

  5. Dawit - "Level 7" (5:34)
Review: Many happy returns to Bradley Zero's Rhythm Section International label, which this month notches up five years in the game. To celebrate, he's releasing a celebratory compilation and two sampler EPs. This first 12" begins with some inspired broken beat/Nu Groove style deep house fusion from the ever-impressive Yu Su, before moving through ghostly techno (the fizzing beats and yearning chords of Katerina's "Bird People") and manic, metallic and industrial-tinged dancefloor madness courtesy of Lock Eyes ("Inner Conspiracy"). Valesuchi offers up the dense industrial/tribal fusion of "30" - all heavy Test Department beats and woozy electronic noises, while "Dawit" invites us to the glassy eyed, futurist deep house paradise that is "Level 7".

Review: Antoni Maiovvi is well known to lovers of the darker end of the electronic spectrum. Here he debut son LIES with his freaky electronics project Ye Gods across two discs of desolate and depraved sounds that are steeped in ancient folklore and occult ceremonies but also sound as if they come from the future. He often pairs muffled, looped vocals with whisper in your ear to paranoid effect with tribal drums, dark drones and drawn out rhythms that really draw you in whether you like it or not. The drums can get more or less wild and ragged, and the grooves can veer towards techno as on 'Palaces (Orgy Response)' but this always remains an inventive and unpredictable album.

Review: Sadly departed producer Susumu Yokota made and released some breathlessly brilliant music during his lifetime. Acid Mt Fuji, a 1994 album released in the earliest stages of his recording career, is one of the strongest examples. Here, it gets a first ever vinyl release, some 24 years after the CD edition started appearing in Japanese record stores. In typical fashion, the eleven tracks on offer brilliantly combine elements of ambient, creepy horror soundtracks, IDM and Hardfloor style hard acid with beats that veer from intense and full throttle, to skewed and experimental. It's testament to the album's timeless nature that it doesn't sound like it has aged one bit. In a word: essential.
