Voyager 1 (12")
Cat: VYGR 1. Rel: 19 Sep 18
  1. Neutron Capture (6:32)
  2. Lftrr (6:06)
Review: Melbourne's Andy Hart is known for heading up the Voyage imprint, which over the last few years has pursued the many shades of deep house with releases by the likes of Harvey Sutherland, Urulu and Youandewan. Here he inaugurates his new Voyager sublabel, which sees a noticeable change of tune. On "Neutron Capture" he delivers a slow burning deep space transmission aboard the acid express, while the functional B side cut "Lftrr" is a dubby and hypnotic techno jam suited to heads-down moments in dank warehouse spaces. If this is a sign of things to come for Hart's new outlet, expect a string of club ready and dancefloor orientated cuts.

  4. Dawl - "Party Till The AM" (6:28)
  5. Craig Bratley - "From The DAT" (5:46)
  6. Tones Breaks 2 (bonus track) (2:58)
Review: When it comes to wholehearted tributes to British dance music's turn-of-the-'90s golden era, few labels have captured the energy and excitement of the period quite as well as Tone Dropout. Here the London label dishes out a sixth serving of retro-futurist madness. Highlights naturally come thick and fast throughout. We're particularly impressed by the twisted acid lines and mind-altering psychedelic vibe of The He-Men's "Rolla", the bleep-meets-"Strings of Life" rush of Leeds lad DJPC's "Danger Man", Dawl's stab-happy fusion of electro and early hardcore ("Party Till The A.M") and the "bleep and breaks" rush of Craig Bratley's rumbling EP standout "From The DAT" (which, fittingly, was crafted from old demo recordings he made in the 90s).

  1. Unconventional Spaces (6:18)
  2. Just This (6:35)
  3. Unconventional Spaces (Luca Agnelli remix) (7:26)
  4. Span (5:58)
Review: There's plenty to set the pulse racing on the latest EP from Italian duo Reform, whose previous releases have combined the paranoid darkness and intensity of classic Roman techno with nods towards more melodious - if still raw and razor-sharp - early morning club fare. They're at it again on opener "Unconventional Spaces", peppering a thunderous, kick-drum driven techno groove with poignant chord sequences and stabs that recall both vintage trance and the big-room friendly techno sound of Drumcode. Luca Agnelli delivers an even heavier and more bombastic remix of the same track on side B, which also includes the spacey riff on lightness and darkness that is "Span", where glacial, intergalactic electronics make way for a trance-inducing techno workout.

  4. Memory Child (Acid Tool mix) (5:44)
Review: Following some terrific releases from label boss Posthuman, Acidulant and The Subdermic, London's Balkan Vinyl are back with more retro flavoured jams courtesy of T&K Crew - a coming together of some serious house music legends. The veteran Terry Farley teams up with Kevin Swain of D.O.P. for a tunnelling acid house trip on "Memory Child". Kirk Degiorgio of As One and Machine fame hops onboard next, to deliver a sublime remix that displays his penchant yet again for creating exceptional hi-tech soul. For venturing deeper down into the vortex, you could also try the handy Acid Tool mix on the flip, which works the glide and resonance of that little silver Roland box to even more dramatic effect.

  3. Hear Your Voice (12:28)
  4. Something Left, Something Right, Something Wrong (10:36)
  5. Who Goes There (8:51)
  6. Infinite Moment (10:25)
Review: Kompakt staple Axel Willner returns to present his sixth full-length effort for Kompakt, following up 2016's rather brilliant LP The Follower. On his latest outing, Willner is said to have looked for inspiration outside of the studio, which opened up fresh perspectives on the creation of new music. Moreover, he has stated that in a current climate of hopelessness, the album provided a sense of relief and comfort to him - providing feel good moments that he did not want to end. Indeed, Infinite Moment is a much more introspective affair than previous releases, from the brooding/slow burning opener "Made Of Steel. Made Of Stone", the smoky and glacial dub techno of "Hear Your Voice" to more evocative moments as heard on "Divide Now" or the life-affirming feel of the title track - which closes the impressive release on an optimistic note.

  1. Nothing Around Us (with Lyke) (5:42)
  2. 22 (6:15)
  3. Fade Into You (6:24)
Review: After six months away, Melodious house and "neo-trance" heroes Mathame return to action with a fresh EP on Afterlife Recordings. A-side "Nothing Around" us is particularly potent, with guest vocalist Lyke passionately singing a small selection of key phrases over a rush-inducing backing track rich in sparkling electronics, chunky grooves, melancholic chords and summery melodies. Over on side B, "22" is a wonderfully hypnotic and quietly beautiful trip into deep techno, while the similarly shuffling bit sturdy "Fade Into You" expertly joins the dots between deep techno and high quality, stripped-back trance.

  1. Media Blitz (6:15)
  2. Supply/Demand (6:47)
  3. Human Waste (5:23)
  4. Wage Slave (6:23)
  5. Poverty Line (5:09)
Review: Since three years have now passed since Rich Oddie and Dave Foster debuted their O/H project on Opal Tapes, this EP is long overdue. As with their previous excursion, "Market Values" is breathlessly intense, offering a toxic, wild and angry fusion of lo-fi techno rhythms, punk attitude and what Ron Morelli has described as "scum electronics". Opener "Media Blitz", for example, is like a slap in the face with an iron anvil, while the more atmospheric "Supply/Demand" is notable not only for its hypnotic, arpeggio-driven rhythm section, but also the "screw capitalism" vibe of its growling spoken word vocal. Elsewhere, "Human Waste" takes lo-fi industrial electro to all new levels of fuzziness, while trippy and dimly lit closer "Poverty Line" could well be the best of the bunch.

Poems On Healing A Broken Heart (limited hand-stamped 12" + insert)
Cat: REALITYUSEDTOBEAFRIENDOFMINE 20181. Rel: 18 Sep 18
  1. Goodbye (5:50)
  2. In My Heart (5:28)
  3. Heal Yourself (10:18)
Review: Drop the needle on the first track of "Poems To Heal a Broken Heart", the latest EP from Berlin producer Steffen Laschinski's Rising Sun Project, and you'll be a treated to a track the subtly shifts in emphasis over the course of its duration. "Goodbye" is stunning, all told, moving from dreamy, melodious bliss to breakbeat-driven high-octane thrills in six spellbinding minutes. There's much to enjoy elsewhere, too. "In My Heart" is a hyonotic, undeniably poignant trip into ultra-deep house territory smothered in deliciously dreamy chords, while B-side "Heal Yourself" - a ten-minute fusion of fizzing ambient electronics, rising and falling melodies and breath-taking synthesizer lines - could well be the best of the bunch.

  3. MK650 (6:13)
  4. Hotsauce (5:06)
  5. Lag Down (5:49)
Review: Building on his very sexy works for the Borft weirdos, Jon Doppler's Security is a meeting of Sued's minimal funk sound and the post-acid house trip of early Rephlex. The elasticized acid of Ciphertext, the skanky dub of Wonwah, and the mammoth low end of Lag Down all propel from below, while the swollen synthwork on Hot Sauce and showstopping
MK650 inspire from above. These are late, late night jams that growl ominously in the bassbins, enhancing the foggy atmosphere and begging you to stay for one last dance.

  1. Pax Britannica (4:49)
  2. Ianah (4:20)
  3. The Plaque (6:45)
Review: Since bringing their brand of "avant-techno" insanity to Timedance last autumn, Giant Swan has become one of the most talked-about twosomes in electronic music. This outing on Whities has been getting a lot of heat, and it's easy to see why. Opener "Pax Britannica", for example, is a near perfect fusion of doom-laden, punkish paranoia, skewed techno-punk and Livity Sound style broken techno percussion, while "Ianah" is rubbery redlined techno-punk of the highest order. There's no letting up on the B-side, either, where "The Plaque" sees the West Country misfits douse distorted, speaker-rattling techno beats in torrents of razor-sharp fuzz-bass, heavily processed vocal screams and oodles of electronic noise.

  1. In The Back Of My Car (4:44)
  2. Watch Your Car (4:13)
  3. Your Car Is My Car (6:33)
Review: While electro and techno pioneers Kraftwerk were obsessed with the humble bicycle, Kaften regular Klorex 55 is more partial to motor vehicles. At least that's what the electro stalwart is celebrating on this first solo 12" in nigh on six years. Opener "In The Back Of My Car" is a punchy, full-throttle affair, with robotic vocoder vocals and tongue-in-cheek vocal samples bouncing giddily above a throbbing four-to-the-floor electro rhythm. "Watch Your Car" is darker but funkier, with more metallic electronics and a more menacing vocal, while "Your Car Is My Car" is a riot of bustling techno-tempo drums, razor-sharp electronics, broken robot riffs and a ghetto-tech style vocal (minus the sleaze and misogyny) to help things move along at a pleasingly frenetic pace.

  1. RVO - "Ambipolar Diffusion" (10:41)
  2. Deepbass - "Amazonian" (11:17)
Review: Telemorph mainstay RVO (short for Reggy van Oers, fact fans) returns to the esteemed Dutch label with another suitably epic workout. Over the course of the 11 whirlwind minutes that make up "Ambipolar Diffusion", van Oers layers horror soundtrack chords, dystopian melodies and dub techno style manipulated field recordings over a thrusting, arpeggio-driven techno groove. While restlessly intense, the track is poignant and melancholic. The flipside is taken up by a previously unheard cut from Deepbass, a Barcelona-based Glaswegian who recently impressed with an EP on Materia. His track, "Amazonian", is arguably even better, cannily joining the dots between tribal-infused broken techno, creepy ambience and the hazy atmospherics of the best dub techno.

  1. Dream Resonator (7:51)
  2. Ice (7:01)
Review: Gifted Culture Collective member and occasional S. Moreira collaborator Xinner has decided to inaugurate a new alias, Robotron, via a first EP for ESP Institute. The man-machine's first missive, "Dream Resonator", is rather delightful, and sees him warp chiming, crystalline synthesizer melodies and glassy-eyed IDM style chords around an inventive and entertaining rhythm track that sits somewhere between Drexciya style electro and jazz-fired broken beat. The same rhythmical dexterity is also at the heart of similarly rush-inducing flipside "Ice", where bolder melodies and chunkier bass catch the ear alongside some suitably futurist electronics.
