Selador Decade Vol 1
3D & Robert Owens - "Known Love" (7:51)
Olivier Giacomotto & Quivver - "Snailblazer" (6:40)
Dave Seaman & Hernan Cattaneo - "Napkin Knowledge" (7:28)
Argia & Jepe - "Salitre" (7:38)
Review: In celebration of their tenth birthday, Selador marks the occasion in style with a four-track collaborative EP, featuring tracks from 3D, Robert Owens, Olivier Giacomotto, Quivver, Dave Seaman, Hernan Cattaneo, Argia, and Jepe. The opening track, 'Known Love', is a deep, pulasting house tune that feels like an instant classic, perhaps thanks to the soulful, pop-tinged vocals - think LCD soundsystem meets Four Tet. 'Snailblazer', the second track on the EP, takes a much darker turn, with a chugging, EBM-esque feel. Full-bodied and complete with obscured vocals, this is the kind of track to pull out your bag when it's time to really get stuck in. On the B-side, 'Napkin Knowledge' draws on the glistening synths of eurodance, yet still securing the melodies to a grounded bassline and rhythm section. 'Salitre' is the perfect closing track, rising up in a gleaming, ecstatic melody, before delicately returning to ground level. A varied yet firmly cohesive collaborative release - the perfect way for Selador to kick off their 2023 catalogue.

Danton Eeprom - "L'Homme Canon" (5:59)
Review: Stop yourself in for another rugged ride through electro and techno from the vanguard here as Thisbe Recordings serves up a fifth fantastic slab of wax. It's a fine various artists affair that kicks off with Acid Washed and the legendary Arnaud Rebotini. Their 'Brandtaucher' is a polished metal and electro tinged disco cut with bleeping melodies. Seb El Zin then keeps it real raw with 'Lingua Minimalista' and the energy doesn't dip on Rambal Cochet's flip side opener 'Oseary Drakoulias' races to the star on slap funk bass and cruising melodies. Mount Kismet's 'Sirocco' rides on rugged arps and last of all Danton Eeprom's 'L'Homme Canon' slows right down to an electro-funk and boogie down workout.

Tammo Hesselink - "Untitled 42" (5:10)
Review: Some of Europe's finest purveyors of underground sounds come together on this fourth rase from the One Eye Witness label out of the Netherlands. Asphalt DJ kicks off and lays out a steamroller of a techno banger in 'Blades' which is pulsing, hard hitting but supple. RDS gets for a much more minimal and cosmic vibe on the tight and bouncy 'TH Only' then Ste Roberts brings some machismo and texture to 'Tune Pitch Decay' with its industrial tech aesthetic. Tammo Hesselink closes down the EP with the loose and bendy tones, scattered hits and late night minimal eeriness of 'Untitled 42.'

The Signal (Night mix) (6:30)
The Signal (Day mix) (6:48)
Review: Raton has grown to be a quite an integral part of Drumcode as well as the underground at large and now after previously working on the likes of Ellum Audio he finds himself in the studio with techno bigwig, Adam Beyer. The pair cook up two versions of the same cut here. 'The Signal' (Night mix) is a dramatic cut with an epic baseline and space-age synth craft over chunky drums that are constantly on the rise. 'The Signal' (Day mix) is a much more melodic and light cut but has just as much low-end heft. Both of these tunes give you an insight into how big name DJs like this see techno working in different settings.

Review: Monstrously glassy, yet heavy hard techno cuttage from the French RAW crew, who welcome four stunning audio fragments from various artists in their orbit. It's the seventh release in the Gemstones series, which is in turn inspired by different types of precious stones. Opener 'Neo Tokyo Vision' is an exciting and cutting tittilator, with massive rave stabs and a nigh-perfect balance of weight and highs, evoking the feeling of freely trawling the city at night with reckless abandon. Things grow grungier from thereon, with the likes of 'Black Mesa' and 'Burned Out' hearing the EP grow increasingly soily, subterranean.

Review: Dutch label Shiver makes its debut this week with a various artist EP featuring some current heroes of the minimal/tech house scene. On the first side of Cold Flower (Full Bloom) you've got Cris P with the hi-tech deepness of the title track, reminiscent of early United States Of Mars sounds, followed by Rosario's darkly stomping Stigma Flap remix and Ouhx's liquid drum 'n' bass journey 'Aomori' which is an introduction of things to come over on the flip. There you have Berlin's Ed Herbst, usually known for his deep house exploits, delivering the 90s influenced jazzy jungle roller 'High & Dry' followed by something more familiar of him in the form of late night mood music groove 'Between The Bars'.

Krasa Rosa & MOS - "Solovey" (6:45)
Review: Melody Of The Soul is focused on an emotive strain of techno which takes its cues from classical composition as much as contemporary electronic music. On this new 12", rasa Rosa takes centre stage for a debut outing which makes an instant impression thanks to the stirring fusion of youthful choral vocals and bombastic strings set to a steady 4/4 pulse. 'Kukushka' is lighter in tone, shot through with a soothing balm of pan pipes and enchanting female vocals which persist into the collaborative cut with Ranta and Miroshin, 'Kolybelnaya'. On the final track, Rosa links up with MOS for a delicate, house-oriented meditation for the most spiritual, open-hearted of dancefloor moments.

Review: Needs have done a fine line in charitable releases in the last few years and here comes another one, this time in the form of a various artists release. Maara's 'Lose Control' is a bumpy techno workout with nice pinging kick drums, Priori then slows it down to a more predatory crawl on 'This Multiple' and Rudolf C allows the aliens in his machines to take over on the deep cyborg techno of 'Bugs Life.' HearThug's cosmic workout 'KillAcidKill' brings a tense vibe to the floor.

Locked Club & RLGN - "Kill Me" (5:16)
Review: Electro monarchs Maelstrom, Locked Club and RLGN return to EP-making with a four-track array of acid bangers, happily working together on a split record to celebrate the pan-European electro scene. Their offering is unequal in quantity (2 Maelstrom and 3 Locked Club tunes) but is resolutely equal in heat; 'LA Nuit Est A Toi' is Maelstrom's standout, bleepy and suffocating in its generative, janky fright. Locked Club and RLGN follow up, 'Kill Me' being the best and most suicidally pushy techno track to soundtrack our nightmares.

Review: Strap in for another rollercoaster ride through the Drumcode tech-scape as we get an authoritative workout from four essential new talents. First up is Mha Iri, whose 'Bel' centres around a catchy vocal hook and darkly seductive synth snarls, before Marco Faraone nods back to some classic Wildchild and locks it to a steely pulse. Review: The Analogue label is right back to its brutal techno, best right out of the blocks at the start of 2023. This 12th such offering is a vicious various artist affair that kicks off with the one and only Perc. 'Skinner' rides a wave of serrated bass energy and turbulent synth work that will blow up any club. Remco Beekwilder's 'Dominance' is darker, even more caustic and direct and UVB's 'Gun & Run' is a hypnotic industrial stomper. Plenty of throwback rave energy and hints of gabba define the maximal closer, Jerm's 'Flesh Hoover.'

Reflex Blue - "J2PX" (4:43)
Review: One Eye Witness is mostly known for doing reissues of treasured 90s breakbeat, techno and trance under the name Kalahari Oyster Cult but this outlet under their name is for new music. Similar to the previous, the fifth edition is a compilation with submissions from different artists around the world. Starting out the EP is the Montreal producer Priori with the very atmospheric 'Weight'. Those who follow the label, know that every release will get a bit of trance and sure enough, Eversines deliver with wicked 'Vigilance'. For the second side, the 'Bustlin' Monk' by O Fourtyfour, bounces along with a trippy, broken, electro groove. Lastly, 'J2PX' by Reflex Blue is a sick, robotic funker that we expect to get a lot of attention by those who get this record. You can always expect some excellent music from One Eye Witness.

Driving layers of bass, transients and dubbed out melodic loops transforming into percussive elements and vice versa throughout extended excursions in fast paced machine powered exercises. Viciously remastered for maximum effect on large sound systems.

Confidential Recipe - "This Is Our Groove" (feat Lady Tazz) (5:18)
Review: Here comes the second part of the RSPX presents Actualize compilation, released by Rekids, a Berlin-based label run by Radio Slave aka. Matt Edwards. Ultimately, said comp will contain 16 tracks of hard-hitting and diverse techno from a range of artists to have featured on Edwards' Rekids Special Projects sublabel, which focuses on 'no-nonsense' techno. For the time being, though, the comp split into a series of four EPs, evidently allowing the listener breathing room and time to consider each track, not least with the intention of being heard on high-quality vinyl. Slam and Radio Slave helm up the A-side for some neat meditative numbers, while relative newcomers Silvershower and Confidential Recipe deliver much wilder hard techno tea on the B.

Review: Rain & White Transit Van kick off a new collaborative project with this first EP on Damo B's Emotec label, and what an inspired cosmic trip it is. 'Cliffdive' is a subtle opener with thinking cosmic leads and lazy mid-tempo groves sweeping you up and depositing you amongst the stars. 'Castaway' then puts crunchy drum breaks front and centre, waiting around the edges with mystic chords and melancholic emotions. There is high-speed electro slickness to 'Park' complete with flashes of acid and 'Sin' closes with a mix of muted synth modulations, warped metal surfaces and bumping electro beats.

Review: If you've ever been luck enough to attend the Freerotation music festival than plenty about this remix package will make sense. Not least the interpretation by event co-founder and modular synth hero Steevio, here delivering a remix on vinyl for the first time. Bringing in elements of jazz, ambient, field recordings, dub, house music and - albeit barely audible - subtle shades of tech, it's a sophisticated package that fully buys into the theory of electronic sounds being a form of high art. Running the gamut from the stepping, poised but decidedly free spirited 'Lucid' and Deadbeat's tense, drone-y take on'Sam Gimignano', to the lush keys and white noise of Andrea Cicheki's redo of 'Siegfried 2.0' and Dr Nojoke's beautifully blissed out smoky house, it's as dense as it is accomplished.

Review: Blkmarket Music has been going along nicely for a while now and that continues with a leftfield new EP from Reade Truth, who has previously released on the likes of Sonic Groove, Psionic and Warm Fiction, but only sporadically over the last few years. That unrushed approach is manifested in his music, too, which is a lethargic and heavy take on techno. 'Signal Aout Tanga' shows that with nagging vocal loops and slow motion drums, while 'Call To Play' has a dubby undercurrent and nice twisted acid lines. Elsewhere, things get stripped back to deep rhythms on 'Txm (Trance Ecstacy Machine)' while closer 'The Beauty Of The Dark' is driving but still dubby, rhythmic techno.

Spanish veteran Reeko kicks off the A-side with the mental overdrive of 'Arquetipo 22' soon followed by the body-bashing industrial terror of DJ Saint Pierre's 'Titan'. Review: Middlesborough musician Rees impressed with his last outing on the Bordello A Parigi label: 'Three Eyes' was a real dancefloor gem which he now follows up with three more gems that showcase the artist's eclectic style and versatile skills. 'Dream Wave' is a bright, busy, intense cut with glistening synths front and centre, dancing about a crunchy and rigid rhythm while 'The New Beat' ups the ante with eerie arps leading the way as more metallic drum sounds clatter away below. Last of all is 'Electric Body' which is awash with more incisive synths and guitar lines, all with a hypotonic lead synth and new wave techno drums powering it along.

Some of you may have heard his release under this moniker on Kyle Hall's Wild Oats label a little while back. Technoindigenous Studies serves as a platform for his many alter egos and side projects with this new EP titled Taino, a tribute to his own indigenous Caribbean ancestors. Whether it's the heady electro sounds of opening cut 'Bajacu' (Morning Light) on the A side, or the mesmerising deep techno cut 'Mucaro' (Night Owl) on side B, or the introverted late night computer funk of 'Karaya' (Moon) - this is what makes Gifted & Blessed what it is

Regal - "Undisputed" (6:48)
Dj Emerson - "Xtc" (5:44)
Tensal - "Metaverse" (6:02)
Asstnt - "La Linea" (8:18)
Review: Spanish label Involve hits release number 40 and continues to grow old disgracefully with some face-melting techno from a fine crew of miscreants. Regal's 'Undisputed' is a pilled up old school techno banger with flashy synth work, while DJ Emerson's 'Xtc' is just as intense but this time from the synth patterns, acid and banging drums which all coalesce into a thrilling ride. Tensal's 'Metaverse' is edgy and unsettling with its nerve stabs, fractured vocals and unrelenting kick drum power then Asstnt's 'La Linea' closes out with 90s white knuckle techno and filthy guitar riffs in amongst the action.

Elekta (4:59)
Bygone (5:23)
Moonburn (5:24)
Submerged (6:00)
Review: Well travelled techno auteur Regent finds himself next up on the small but already fiercely formed Warg label with four blistering new cuts. 'Elekta' is a full bodied one with weighty drum funk overlaid by a tight weave of bright synths. 'Bygone' is more straight ahead, a buoyant cut with oversized hi-hats and synths peeling off at pace. 'Moonburn' thumps with real intent as it races along at 100 miles an hour and last of all 'Submerged' gets you into a 5am zoned out state. All four of these are useful, characterful cuts once more from Regent.

Review: The don of Birmingham techno Karl O'Connor serves up some live rarities courtesy of retroverts Cititrax. Features recently uncovered recordings of a Regis performance in NYC on January 4th, 1997 at the famed Film Academy. His unmistakeable sound and influence is integral to the DNA of the techno sound, blatantly copied but never matched. Some classics from the Downwards catalogue are contained on this EP in all their austere fashion. "We Said No" "Translation" and "Careless Pedestrian" from his seminal 1996 LP Gymnastics being highlights. The original tapes were discovered by Evan Kreeger, studio work/transfers by James Ruskin in London and audio mastered by Veronica Vasicka in New York.

Review: Regis and Female's Againstnature album from 2000 gets the full reissue treatment here by Berlin label, Tresor. Released under their given names Karl O'Connor and Peter Sutton, the record is a noted zenith of the Birmingham techno scene of the era. It has had a major influence on the music that was released in the years after and has here been remastered for a fresh double vinyl pack. As well as the original sounds, there is also 'Theme From Streetwalke,' a track that was previously released on a Tresor compilation. The tracks are heavy but relatively stripped back. They're packed with texture and atmosphere and never less than hugely compelling.
