  2. Hate In The Pants (4:59)
  3. Strange Feeling (4:52)
  4. Knowledge Wasn't My Plan (6:13)
  5. Strictly Cut (7:25)
Review: Since making their debut as 90 Process last year, Julian Muller and Hadone have delivered a series of EPs that look to the rave era for inspiration. They're at it again here, serving up a slamming EP for Lobster Theremin that reeks of Vicks, Essex and sweaty parties on farmer's fields off the M25. "Hate In The Pants", for example, sounds like the offspawn of Joey Beltram and Mark 'Ruff' Ryder, "No Warehouse Needed" wraps '92 style rave stabs and sped-up vocal samples around a blistering hardcore breakbeat, and "Strictly Cut" could have been tailor-made for loved-up sunrises and illicit mountainside parties. In order words, it's a slamming collection of retro-futurust hardcore and techno bangers.

Review: Through the jungle mists come Alleged Witches, who hail from Slovenia and are the latest signing to R&S sublabel Meda Fury. Voodoo drum workouts and distant native tongues echo through the ages just like on the eponymous opening track. "Far East" merges the organic and synthetic gracefully in entrancing fashion, while "Pick Up Your Needle" (Initiation Rituals remix) on the flip entrances the listener with its wonderfully hypnotic polyrhythms. Pressed into eerie, marbled, black vinyl and hand stamped with that Meda Fury seal of excellence, this is vinyl only magic forest tracks for DJs.

Review: Essential repress! Tomas Bangalter's stone cold classic Roule 12" Trax On Da Rocks makes a return. The five tracks on offer - "On Da Rocks", "Roule Boule", "What To Do", "Outrun" and "Ventura" - have acquired legendary status, standing as sublime examples of the rough, raw end of the filter-soaked French house sound. Some 17 years since they were first released, these tracks have lost none of their madcap brilliance; if this isn't already a cherished part of your record collection, here's your chance.

  1. State Of Emergency
  2. Maybe 1 Day (feat Tony Coates)
  3. Yllabian Dogfight
  4. Under Tone
  5. Fear No Fear (feat Don Q)
  6. War Dance
Review: The brilliantly monikered Big Strick - familial elder to Omar S and responsible for the odd killer release on his younger cousin's FXHE imprint - belatedly sates the appetite of record collectors keen to indulge in his recent album Detroit Heat with a six track selection of the choicest cuts spread across this twelve inch. Seemingly drawing influence from a myriad of Motor City influences, Detroit Heat impressively flits between murky deep house, tracky techno and hypnotic jack-tracks. Like many of his contemporaries, Strick is a sucker for 'cement mixer' production - that distinctly Detroitian sound where every beat, groove or bassline sounds like the master tapes have been marinated in grit. That trademark sound, alongside a solid selection of floor-friendly grooves, makes Detroit Heat an excellent addition to the Motor City house canon. The rubbery spinal atmospherics of "Under Tone" and the Tony Coates vocally assisted jack of "Maybe 1 Day" are particular highlights!

  1. Big Strick - "Family Affair" (feat Omar S)
  2. Genereation Next - "Windsor Nights"
  3. Reckless Ron Cook - "Night Moves"
  4. Big Strick - "Armed & Dangerous"
Review: Leonard "Big Strick" Strickland is perhaps best known for his family ties with Omar-S (they're cousins), though his productions are well worthy of praise in their own right. Here, he offers up a sampler 12" featuring cuts from his recent (and excellent) Reservoir Dogs LP. Perhaps the most noteworthy cut is "Family Affair", a lovingly constructed chunk of hypnotic, melodic deepness written with Omar-S. That said, Strick's solo effort "Armed & Dangerous" - a winding chunk of voodoo techno - is arguably better. The mazy techno-funk of Reckless Ron Cook's "Night Moves" is also outstanding.

  1. Many Many Pings (6:45)
  2. Lox (6:03)
  3. Gadget (6:08)
  4. Hapexil Rotator (7:28)
Review: After keeping his counsel for the best part of 12 months, Blawan follows up last year's decidedly robust and forthright "Wet Will Always Dry" album with another suitably searing, all-action EP. Title track and opener "Many Many Pings" adds wild, Aphex Twin style electronics to a driving, dense and deranged techno rhythm, before "Lox" delivers a similarly intense study in charcoal-coloured lo-fi techno insanity. "Gadget" sounds like a Surgeon record with razor-sharp claws - all thumping beats and scuzzy electronic loops - while "Hapexil Rotator" cleverly combines bittersweet and otherworldly electronic flourishes with another mind-mangling distorted techno drum track.

  5. Ascot/WW - "Alien Vision" (6:19)
Review: Saucer-eyed rave revivalists Tone Dropout can usually be relied upon to deliver the goods, especially if you're looking for sweaty, energy-packed slabs of warehouse ready techno, acid and electro. The label's latest missive is packed to the rafters with such giddy and forthright fare, to the bleeping, mind-altering insanity of Dawl & Sween's acid-fired throb-job "Laser Guided", to the "Bleep and Breaks" pressure of Samuel Padden's bustling "Quad Damage", to the stripped-back machine techno heaviness of Daif's similarly bleepy "Mysterious Freakin History". Elsewhere, the Ascot/WW track sits somewhere between early breakbeat hardcore and ambient techno, while Skywave Transmission v XOTR's "Warehouse 101" lives up to its name. Serious heat!

Review: Charlotte de Witte is at the forefront of the harder techno revival. After big outings on Mary Go Wild and Novamute she is back on her own KNTXT label - which is also a touring party concept - for four more bangers. Searing acid lights up the cantering drums of opener "Selected" and that continues on "Form" with its undulating lines and relentless drums. "Time" is still laced with acid, but in a softer, more hypnotic style that locks you in a trance. "Amar" shows another side, closing out with some thoughtful ambient bliss.

On the other side, Bassiani's HVL flips the beat on its head for more ominous perspective, complete with klaxon acid line and sinewy breakbeats.

Review: Gesloten Cirkel has become one of techno's true cult figures since his emergence back in 2009 with a self-titled 12" for Viewlexx offshoot Murder Capital, exploring the strange fringe between techno and electro with intermittent releases for David Vunk's Moustache Techno and Berceuse Heroique. Supposedly from Russia, there has nonetheless been much speculation as to the producer's true identity, though his musical roots seem very much planted in the sound of The Hague. His debut album Submit X is described quite aptly as "not for the faint-hearted", featuring a host of electro and techno cuts filled with classic breakbeats, tripped out vocal samples and caustic acid lines. However, it's also an album which looks to classic minimal wave sounds for inspiration - the lean rhythm and vocoder of "Stakan" and decayed 8-bit textures of "Chatters" provide some of the album's most memorable moments, proving Gesloten Cirkel is a producer with a few tricks up his sleeve. Undoubtedly one of the albums of the year.

Review: Grant's debut album, The Acrobat, was one of the surprise sets of 2015: a quietly impressive collection of tracks that effortlessly blended a lo-fi, industrial-influenced sensibility with clear influences from both Chicago jack-tracks and warehouse-friendly Motor City techno. This time round, it's the latter influence - expertly fused with the swing of deep house, the ear-pleasing warmth of ambient house, and the far-sighted electronics of vintage IDM - that comes to the fore. It's a blueprint that guarantees far more hits than misses, as Grant runs through a series of enjoyable, club-ready cuts. It also proves, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that the mysterious producer an artist on the rise.

Review: When Dekmantel announced Robert Hood's Paradygm Shift project, which encompassed a gaggle of 12" singles and this album, the Dutch label described it as the "older and mature brother" of his seminal 1994 double-pack Minimal Nation. It's a rather apt description. This full album edition offers a gleeful romp through the Detroiter's distinctively booming-but-stripped back style of jacking techno, where slowly morphing loops, foreboding riffs and spooky melody lines ride hypnotic, locked-in grooves. There's little thrillingly new and different here, just killer dancefloor workouts in Hood's trademark style. Given that he does this kind of loop techno better than anyone else, that's a very good thing indeed.

Review: LFO's self-titled debut 12" is arguably the greatest British techno record ever made. While that's a bold claim, there's no denying that it still sounds incredible 30 years after Mark Bell, Gez Varley and Martin Williams got together and made it. This purple vinyl "anniversary edition" from Flash Forward contains all three tracks from the original 12". Attention will naturally focus on the peerless "Leeds Warehouse Mix" of "LFO" - a near perfect Bleep and Bass cut full of Motor City synth chords, speak-and-spell vocals and the weightiest sub-bass ever found on a techno tune - but the B-sides are equally as good. "Track 4" is another bleeping, bass-heavy beast with skittish, dun reggae influenced drums, while "Probe (The Cuba Edit)" is alien, metallic and mind-altering in equal measure.

Review: Christian Loffler has been producing pensive, cinematic electronic soundscapes for a long time now. 10 years since his first EP landed, the German producer presents his third studio album on his own Ki Records label. Once again Loffler has continued to grow through the album recording process, embracing more adventurous textural and sound design practices whilst also enriching his songwriting chops. The vocal turns from Josephine Philip and Mohna help deepen the seductive melancholy of his compositions, but even in its instrumental moments the pensive synth lines sing their own heartfelt messages. If you're a fan of Jon Hopkins, Nathan Fake and other such emotionally charged electronica artists, you won't want to miss this album.

With previous releases in recent times on exciting labels such as Unknown To The Unknown, Warp and Fool's Gold, she serves up yet more of her retro flavoured house, with a classic sense of bounce to it all. From the squeaky, life affirming and soulful bliss of "Rainbow Body, the brooding yet adrenalised EBM power of "Quadratic Mind" (which soon goes all Robert Hood/M-Plant on you) to the futuristically booming electro bass action of "Transmute" (feat Marnie) - this is one killer EP from start to finish.
