Alternate (Steve O'Sullivan mix) (hand-stamped 12" reeditado)
Cat: SUSH 16. Rel: 26 Jun 19
  1. Alternate (8:19)
  2. Alternate (Steve O'Sullivan remix) (8:34)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Sideway Invisibility Theory are already well versed in the Romanian minimal scene both individually and as a duo - on top of their releases on Do Easy and Amphia, Cristi Cons and Vlad Caia represent two of the most prolific operators in the second wave of Bucharest-based dance music. With a mammoth wedge of music delivered to Sushitech in the form of two double packs entitled Invisibility Chapter I & II, this single serves as a pint-sized distillation of those records for the DJs with less time on their hands. "Alternate" is right at home on Sushitech, all elegant beat programming and huge, billowing clouds of dub chord. Label regular Steve O' Sullivan is right at home on such smoky ground, although his remix on the B-side blows the vapour away to deliver a tightly woven tool for the heads down crowd.

Review: Since opting to release more music under his given name, DeepChord man Rod Modell has largely stuck to dubbed-out ambience and heady drone soundscapes. His latest full-length is a little different, though, offering up club-focused cuts that mix his usual fuzzy aural textures and dub-fired motifs with up-tempo techno rhythms. By his standards, it's a very forthright set, with highlights including the noise-soaked stomp of "Reiki", the thrusting heaviness of "ITO", the hypnotic slam of "Jade" - where breezy, early morning electronics flutter away above tough drums and a mind-altering bassline - and the boisterous peak-time techno anthem "Scrawler".

Review: Although Emile Facey has been producing as Plant 43 for roughly six years, the UK producer appears to be in a rich vein of form right now. Having debuted in impressive fashion on Dutch label Frustrated funk earlier this year, Plant 43 resurfaces on Semantica with this equally worthy five track 12" The Sentient City Awakens. No stranger to Svreca's label having first graced Semantica last year, this record will please Plant 43 fans no end, with "Inward Stream" and "Hydro Subway" showing equal reverence to melody and booming percussion that few other current electro practitioners can match. Concluding production "Frond Of Stars" is beautifully epic.

Review: Gary Martin is well known for his unique productions and his label Teknotika is surely a classic coming out of the famous motor city. This special 10" holds two sought after tracks that were found on a lost DAT tape by Yossi Amoyal and Gary Martin himself. On the A side we have a long time secret weapon, it's a hypnotic groove that was heard on many classic sets, Zip and Ben Klock to name a few. An extremely insane, hard to find Gigi Galaxy track that was changing hands for silly prices is on the B side, for those who know... massive release!

Review: With a true curation of artists, this double LP marks the eclectic and passionate works from Public System. The latest in the synth-heavy sludgedown from the ever impressive imprint, invites a new cast of characters into the dungeon dance. The common theme throughout this collection, seems to be wide, slowed down melancholy. Some tracks take a floor-focused jump, while others demand the attentive consumption of a more serene setting. These two discs are packed with dynamic, chugging, and forward thinking jams that make you mesh all things the imprint is clearly passionate for.

  1. Track 1 (10:42)
  2. Track 2 (5:32)
  3. Track 3 (4:23)
Review: Despite the matter-or-fact title, there's little ordinary or mediocre about the three tracks that make up Levon Vincent's first EP of 2019. Check, for example, the untitled A-side cut, where glassy-eyed, old school style piano riffs and fluid solos ride a chunky, thickset retro-futurist groove. It's quite deep in tone, despite the loved-up musical elements on show, but also feels like an underground anthem in the making. Over on side B, Vincent first combines Steve Reich style cyclical marimba loops with wonky club beats and warm deep house chords, before peppering a locked-in rhythm track with intergalactic synthesizer melodies and ultra-deep atmospherics.

  3. Meta 4 - "Urnammu" (7:45)
  4. Jorge Gamarra - "Dypac" (5:42)
Review: There's a certain air of buy-on-sight mystique around EYA Records, somewhere between the low-key presentation of the music and the cult artists they're calling on to realise their particular vision of deviant dancefloor business. This is unabashed freaky party tackle, from Manuk & Oli Silva's delirious B-movie jack track "Nevermind The Crispies" to the uneasy electro snarl of "Verdico". Meta 4 has equally nightmarish moods to share on the graveyard acid of "Urnammu" and Jorge Gamarra seals the deal with the schlocky braindance horror of "Dypac". It's the kind of record that you'll be reaching for come Halloween, trust.

  1. Terra (6:13)

  3. Natural XT (7:12)
  4. Always NV (Martsman remix) (5:22)
Review: Loop LF is back on Well Street with another classy set of leftfield rhythm explorers that orbit a similar sound world to Livity Sound, Cong Burn, UntilMyHeartStops and other such adventurous contemporary techno labels. "Terra" kicks things off in a delicate fashion with shivering synth patterns skirting around gossamer thin percussion - it's subtle and incredibly effective. "Always NV" is even more stripped back, but no less engaging in its deployment of crooked rhythms and eerie atmospherics. "Natural XT" calls to mind the mellow, dubby refractions you might hear from Leif, and then Martsman steps up for a razor sharp D&B revision of "Always NV" that stays true to Loop LF's minimal aesthetic.

Review: Next up on the ever-excellent Oscillat is "Spellbound" by the supremely talented Matthew Dekay. This moving deep house jam uses a few key elements to make a soul-stirring confection for truly spine-tingling moments in the middle of the dance. From the slithers of vocal to the insistent key riff that bounces throughout, this is an outstanding slice of contemporary house music loaded with feeling. Mandar then take the original and inject it with a feisty peak time energy shot through with a little trancey magic and an acidic undertone. It's not a raging beast but rather an energizing workout for the brain and the body - just what you need in the midst of a marathon.

It's a contribution to one of the longest running series in the business, DJ Kicks, and she's used the opportunity to showcase the depth and variety of the music in her crates. Beginning with the classic early '90s ambient of Spacetime Continuum, Gou flits between humid, mid-tempo Balearic house (her own "Hungboo"), acid-fired downtempo electronica, throbbing 1990 peak-time anthems (Weatherall's ace but largely forgotten remix of Sly & Lovechild), hypnotic techno minimalism, main room throb-jobs (Hiver), pulsating electro, classic breakbeat hardcore, post-dubstep, dark tribal drum jams and sunrise ready Motor City brilliance (Deniro).

Review: Given his stargazing, intergalactic ethos, it's perhaps unsurprising that sci-fi techno overlord Jeff Mills has decided to mark the 50th anniversary of the Apollo XI moon landing by releasing an album containing his musical "interpretations of Earth's moon". As you'd expect from an artist of Mills' standing, it's a very good album. Evocative, atmospheric and hugely spacey - this is Jeff Mills after all - the seven-track set moves from scene-setting, string-laden ambient ("Control, Satva and Rama") to sparse, acid-flecked dub techno ("Electromagnetic") via a string of fine cuts that variously touch on electro-fired broken techno ("Stabilizing The Spin"), Steve Reich style minimalism (the brilliant "Lunar Power"), and semi-orchestral electronic positivity ("The Tides").

A proud alumni of Warsaw's Brutaz club night and Jasna 1 club, in addition to being one of Discwoman's most recent additions, she's in fine form on "Identity Process", following up some great releases on Intrepid Skin and Haven recently. From the brooding rave energy of "Bring The Noize", the barrelling peak time intensity of "Code Red" to the powerful adrenalin of "Devil May Care" which is perfect for those "heads down" moments under the strobe light - Maja lunges straight for the jugular from the get-go on this truly ferocious outing.

With his good pal Chris "Funk" Ferreira manning the console again, Bennis serves up a couple of fierce cuts here: on the A side get down to the classic electro beats of "Interflug" taking the very best of NYC and Detroit at the same time - that'll have you doing the Electric Boogaloo in no time. On the flip, the same booming bass heavy approach is all over "Rover" while merging the soulful melancholia of second wave Chicago - think Alleviated when you hear those dreamy bittersweet pads throughout.

Review: On the A1 Chekov follows up their moves on Peach Discs and Timedance with a proper peak timer, they've been described by Ben UFO as 'king of the build up' and that's evident on this one. At the A2 London's Doppelate makes their Cong Burn debut with an elegant tech-house roller. Umwelt leads the charge on this second installment with the eerie machine snarl of "Fallen Empire", followed up by two versions of the devilish "Sleep When You Die" by Moralez & The Horrorist. Review: Once again diving into the mysterious electronics of decades past, Platform 23 strike gold with this cult release from short-lived Canadian duo Vini Vidi Vici. In its original form this 1989 private press mini-album emerged from the Montreal underground with a prescient take on house and more experimental minimal wave fare - it's no surprise original copies fetch hefty prices in the second hand market. From the psyched-out house thrum of "Club Stuff" to the percussive bounce of "Vini Vidi Vici" and the more madcap sample juggling of "Ou Sommes Nous?" this is a killer record unbound by scenes or trends - just pure, primal hardware experimentation.

Five deep and meditative cuts that merge classic house/techno flavours with IDM and ambient aesthetics - all with a modern experimental twist. On the flip, he even dons his more popular Call Super alias for the Rhythim Is Rhythim-ish vibe of "The Mess".

Review: Frankfurt record shop Gosu are back with the next instalment of their in-house label by OFFM regular Rob Amboule. The British producer has been making records for some years now, on labels like 20:20 Vision, Heidi's The Jackathon and more recently OSMAN and NorthSouth, initially starting out in London. A chance encounter led him to Frankfurt and after a short while he decided to relocate out to the Main area. A long-time friend of the label as well as Freebase (RIP), his skills developed with the encouragement of label bosses Manuel Schatz and Phil Evans. Amboule presents Gosu 9.5: on the A side we've got the funky and chunky all analogue electro futurism of "9.5 B", while on the flip things go in a more straight ahead direction on the classic techno excursion of "9.5 D" - taking the very best elements of Detroit and Yorkshire in its stride.

Review: Resurgent Welsh techno wizard DJ Guy launches his own label with a fresh batch of deep diving jams that put the soul back in the machine. From the twinkling, starry-eyed delights of "Music Is Life" to the horizontal meditation of "Interplanetary," this is immaculately executed electronica in the fine tradition of UK trailblazers like B12 that sounds as fresh as it did in the 90s. "Warmth In Rhythm" sports a nagging house groove to suck you in with ease, while "Propulsion State" fires off a dazzling arpeggio that heads skywards with a twitchy electro backbone for company. Top shelf tackle from a seriously talented cat.

Mariachi Guadalajara (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: CEAD 001. Rel: 15 Jul 19
  1. Guadala (4:28)
  2. Jara (4:40)
  3. Mariachi (4:46)
  4. Desacorde (4:15)
Review: From Patron and Wolfskuil to this first drop on Or:la's new label Cead, Utrecht producer Lewski is fast establishing himself in the buzzing space that exists between techno, electro and more experimental fare. "Guadala" has an uptempo bite, but there's plenty of dubby immersion to be felt in the bubbling synth drops and splashy reverb trails. "Jara" has its own kind of crooked intent, pockmarked with acid swerves and interlocking rhythms to get synapses firing. "Mariachi" takes things back to the peppier end of the tempo spectrum, clearly aiming for the peak time without making any cliched moves - no mean feat - and then "Descacorde" switches things up with a stomping electro house workout that brings a wholly different flavour to this excellent EP.

  1. Sways (7:02)
  2. Fall Away (6:05)
  3. Nibiru (7:00)
Review: Former Mock & Toof man Duncan Stump's Coral D project is a study in sunrise-ready retro-futurism, with his two previous singles under the alias combining warm analogue electronics with new age synthesizer riffs, sci-fi drum machine grooves and unwavering glassy-eyed positivity. While some of the turn-of-the-90s charm can be found on this EP for Klasse Wrecks, it's a slightly more psychedelic and otherworldly affair. Our pick is "Sways", where a nagging acid motif bubbles away alongside marimba style synthesizer melodies and a vintage post-jack U.S deep house groove. "Fall Away" is even more druggy and intoxicating, with gravelly spoken word samples and exotic melodies riding a chunky groove, while closing cut "Nibiri" is sweet, dubbed out and pleasingly hazy.

  1. Beyond Good & Evil (6:13)

  3. Eye Ache (6:06)
Review: With previous releases from some of the top heads of the electronic spectrum, including Leif, Steevio, Arnaldo and more, the imprint UntilMyHeartStops returns with its latest release, this time for mysterious producer Ekeko. Rich analog tape waves sit nicely beside thick 909 rhythmic elements throughout this killer three tracker. The title track "Beyond Good & Evil" starts things of with strong spirit, taking pulsations of warping synths and balancing them with hazy club driven patterns. This theme continues through "FM Joy" and "Eye Ache" but with a wider focus on the dubbier elements of the electro and house spectrum.

Review: The long-serving Psychoskunk label comes back in full force with some unflinching underground techno gear from Error Etica, otherwise known as label boss Victor Martinez. "Inductors V2" sets a serious tone for this record with its reduced soundscape and needlepoint sound design attitude. Hironori Takahashi then makes an appearance remixing "Diatonic Scale" and turning it into a deadly, minimalist bruiser. 65D Mavericks jump on "Schematic Diagram" and laden it with blown out kicks and eerie atmospherics, and then Pelacha tackles "Inductors V1" and embellishes it with creeping, modulating textures that bring the track to life in a most unsettling of ways, as was surely the intention. This is techno for darkened souls if ever we heard it.

Review: Rupture regular Outer Heaven will tickle your inner badboy with this highly anticipated return to the underground nuclear bunker of UVB-76. Four tracks of solid dark sonic matter "The Last Men" takes the lead with a powerful percussive hook maintaining a marching sensation that breaks into momentary splashes of breakbeat chaos. It's backed up the three more equally disarming and trippy tracks. "Blemish" is a swampy drill laced cut with noxious harmonics, while "Still Waters" takes us into the murkiest two-steppy territories you might imagine. Finally "Trapline" shuts, locks and bolsters the front door with a pounding steppy rhythm that's coated in echoes and dubby warmth. Buckle up.

Review: Three years on from his last outing as Head Front Panel, machine-loving acid maestro John Heckle finally delivers a new EP from his techno-focused side project. After opening with a scene-setting chunk of weirdo ambient, Heckle dives into peak-time techno pastures via the sharp, alien synth loops and pounding beats of "Cube" and the grainy, acid-fired dancefloor psychedelia of intoxicating throb-job "Poly Wind". The intensity keeps coming via the minor key bleeps and thrusting drums of "Stretch". There's more tipsy fun on side B, too, meaning this is one wonky techno EP that you don't want to miss out on.
