Review: Ambient mastermind Haruka Nakamura continues to execute his scheme to produce four albums centring on a verdant theme - "Forest" (Aoimori). This time he shares the third album in the slated quadriptych. Building on the legend that the birthplace of all musical instruments was the forested area, the Aoimori series also takes after Nakamura's own formative proximity to a "Blue Forest" near his hometown. Not stooping to the low of assuming that electronica might become abstracted from the groves, canopies and coppices of the world, the artist maintains the fact that forest music is synth music; out from a chromatic four-piece set of introductory songs, 'Blue', 'True' and 'White' included, we move with Nakamura into a serene, happily directionless wooded wandering, reaching the minimalistic aerations of 'Lake' and the earthen excavations and lyses of 'Soil'. By the end of the record, we find ourselves indebted, in 'Silence', to an artist whose tonal sensitivities and peacefully restless, steadfast ambient compositions compel us to rewild the proverbial nature reserve.

Review: Jupiter is a radiant return for Noa that signals a new quality to her artistry. Following her 2021 album, And Then Life Was Beautiful, which was shaped by personal challenges and a diagnosis of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Nao embraces joy and healing on this fourth outing. Tracks like 'Elevate' and 'Wildflowers' express optimism with others like 'Better Days' and 'Happy People' underscoring the theme of growth. The album blends funky guitar solos, delicious drum patterns and nostalgic sounds throughout and manages to show up great musical versatility across a rich, emotionally powerful album.

Review: .Halifax in Nova Scotia on the East Coast of Canada punches above its weight for DIY underground rock and indie. Despite being dwarfed in size compared with the dazzling heights of Montreal or Toronto, the culture is strong, partly thanks to a big student population, so it has become a favourable place for bands to reside. And the likes of Wintersleep, Walrus and Nap Eyes are truly important etchings in the fabric of the place.

Nap Eyes' strength is in delivering hip, analogue-sounding indie-rock records steeped in poetry, philosophy, surrealism and improvisation. Highlights include 'Demons', an adaptation of a phantasmagorical poem of the most important figures in Russian literature, Alexander Pushkin; and an adaptation of the visionary poem by W.B. Yeats - 'I See Phantoms of Hatred and of the Heart's Fullness and of the Coming Emptiness.'

Of the improvisational qualities here, the instrumental wig-outs on album closer 'Isolation' is a hoot. It feels as visceral as any passage of guitar music you'll hear this year. You'd be forgiven for thinking you're listening to Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth, which is no bad thing. Meanwhile, vocally there's parallels to Lou Reed that suit them well. But for all the routine comparisons, that's tempting to make, it does feels as if they're an idiosyncratic act in their own right; underground icons who deserve all the recognition that they can get.

Review: Following on from their critically acclaimed 1988 sophomore effort From Enslavement To Obliteration, which marked their final full-length with original vocalist Lee Dorrian and guitarist Bill Steer, Birmingham grindcore legends Napalm Death would redefine and re-establish themselves on 1990's Harmony Corruption. With the addition of current frontman Mark "Barney" Greenway, the group would trek to the iconic Morrisound Recording in Tampa, Florida (studio home to many a classic death metal record from the likes of Cannibal Corpse and Death), to craft a work far more sonically inspired by their outlying peers within the genre. Working from their refined grindcore blueprint, yet imbuing the trudging chaos with especially heavy riffage and even low guttural growls, this newly tempered form of deathgrind would not only re-chart the band's course for the ensuing decades, but cause a connective riff between the two subcultures of metallic extremity still felt to this day. Vocalists from the two legendary Floridian death metal acts Deicide (Glen Benton) and Obituary (John Tardy) also both make appearances on the vile 'Unfit Earth', making for one of the only posse-like grindcore cuts you're likely to ever have invade your ear canals.

Review:  Legendary Brazilian musician Milton Nascimento is often hailed as one of Brazil's greatest ever musical exports and for this album, he collaborated with NPR's "21st Century's jazz genius," Esperanza Spalding. Milton + Esperanza is an album produced by Spalding and one that blends urgent and timeless sounds together into something interesting and new. The album features guest appearances by Dianne Reeves, Paul Simon, Lianne La Havas, and others while fusing Nascimento's enduring musical vision and Latin spirit with Spalding's innovative approach to jazz.

Review: Synaptic Juice is a dizzying trip into the world of electronic and synth-driven sounds with Edinburgh's Natasha Kitty Katt at the wheel. Her third studio album is a melange of retro 80s beats, eerie atmospheres and futuristic storytelling which explores the surreal psyche of Ze Katt and features tales of vampires, alien love and otherworldly experiences. Each track offers a portal into a neon-lit world where reality and fantasy blur and standout collaborations with Billy Wirth, Suki Soul and His Bitter Truth add depth. The album's sci-fi and cyberpunk influences create a cinematic sound that is bold and adventurous and unlike much else, we've heard of late.

Released in two volumes, the album blends laid-back beats, soulful melodies, and West Coast rap influences that all serve to underline the Dogg's role as a pioneer of the genre. With features from artists like Snoop Dogg, Warren G, and Tupac, the album includes standout tracks like 'Never Leave Me Alone' and "These Days,' which explore Nate's unique ability to mix r&b with gangster rap, which is what made this album such a defining moment in G-funk and cemented his legacy as the "King of Hooks" in hip-hop.

Review: The Nathan Bowles Trio's Are Possible is a dynamic blend of styles, featuring banjo, upright bass, and drums. Nathan Bowles, along with double-bassist Casey Toll (known for his work with Jake Xerxes Fussell and Mt. Moriah) and drummer Rex McMurry (from CAVE), collaborate seamlessly, crafting an expansive and groove-laden musical blend. Nathan's explorations on the banjo span various techniquesifrom clawhammer boogie to strummed and percussive stylesimelding traditional Appalachian roots with experimental minimal drone. This trio's evolution since their last album, 2018's Plainly Mistaken, reflects years of individual growth and collective synergy despite periods of social musical isolation. Each track evolves organically from jam sessions enriched by diverse influences. Rex's rhythmic innovations, Casey's foundational basslines, and Nathan's eclectic compositions blend effortlessly, exploring realms from transcendental sounds to new country funk and folk-rock. Recorded at Steve Albini's Electrical Audio in Chicago but under Cooper Crain's guidance, the album resonates with meticulous production that enhances its sonic richness and depth.

Review: US indie pioneers The National formed back in 1999 and they have cleverly managed to skip the trap of becoming a legacy band. They are aging like a fine wine with old songs sounding better than ever live and new songs holding up brilliantly next to the staggering quality of their early tunes. Part of their evergreen appeal, with increasingly youthful audiences gathering at their concerts despite their sad dad rock tag, is thanks to guitarist Aaron Dessner's a-list collaborations as a producer - including with Taylor Swift. This double vinyl LP set, recorded at the National's June 3 concert at Auditorium Parco della Musica Ennio Morrico in Rome, conveys just how well aligned they are to the zeitgeist, thanks to the mix including the crowd's overwhelmingly emotional response. As for the setlist, it is a celebration of their past, present and future and solid throughout, but standouts include: 'Fake Empire', a spine-tingling knock out that will floor you. And 'Bloodbuzz Ohio', a baroque pop take on post-punk, with the flair of Sufjan Stevens and the darkness of Joy Division. Legendary stuff.

Review: Rome is a 21-track live album that captures The National's performance in the Italian capital on June 3, 2024, with a tracklisting that spans the band's 20-plus-year career. Rome highlights fresh renditions of recent tracks such as 'Eucalyptus' and 'Tropic Morning News', revealing The National's distinct ability to reshape their music in concert, giving new life to old favorites while showcasing hidden gems like 'Runaway' and 'Murder Me Rachael'. The National are renowned for their emotional intensity and layered songwriting and frontman Matt Berninger's deep, brooding vocals, combined with the intricate musicianship of brothers Aaron and Bryce Dessner and the rhythmic backbone provided by Scott and Bryan Devendorf, have earned the band critical acclaim and a devoted fan base. Not to be excluded, the live album has beloved songs like 'Bloodbuzz Ohio', 'I Need My Girl' and Fake Empire' as well. Their live performances are celebrated for their raw energy, with the band's songs taking on heightened emotional and sonic dimensions in a concert setting. Rome preserves this intensity, capturing the fiery atmosphere of the performance and offering fans a definitive live document of the band's evolution over two decades. The album immortalises The National's ability to craft both intimate and expansive moments on stage.

Review: The Natural Yogurt Band, purveyors of enigmatic library music, return with their eighth release, a cosmic odyssey that pushes the boundaries of their signature sound. Joined by keyboardist Huw Rees aka The Oracle, the band ventures into a richer galaxy of sonic exploration. 'Projections' sets the stage with its warped organs and gritty drum breaks, while 'Altered States' and 'Bio Morphic Patterns' delve deeper into the cosmic unknown, their swirling melodies and hypnotic rhythms evoking the vastness of space. 'Messages' and 'Nebulous' offer moments of introspection, their ethereal textures and ambient soundscapes creating a sense of otherworldly wonder. On the flipside, 'Perception' and 'Poly Morph' continue the exploration, their pulsating rhythms and experimental soundscapes challenging the listener's perception of reality. 'Existence' and 'Dimensions' close out the journey, their expansive sounds and philosophical undertones leaving a lasting impression. This is a must-listen for those seeking a unique and thought-provoking musical experience.

Review: Recorded live at Silvermine College of Art in New Canaan, Connecticut, in 1969, this album captures the raw energy and experimental spirit of the late 1960s jazz scene. The ensemble, led by Bobby Naughton on piano and electric piano, features Mark Whitecage on saxophones, James DuBois on trumpet, Mario Pavone on bass, and Laurence Cook on drums. The compositions, including 'Around Again' and 'Nital Rock,' showcase a blend of free jazz improvisation and structured melodies, reflecting the innovative approaches of the era. The album's reissue offers a fresh perspective on this obscure yet outstanding free jazz recording

Review: Naughty By Nature's greatest hits compilations number in the many. In contrast to their two former collections of the same sort, Naughty's Nicest and Nature's Finest, this third Greatest Hits record doesn't sport a subtitle like the other two, yet continues to spread the legacy of this nefarious triad. Released with trueness on the group's breakout catalyst Queen Latifah's label Tommy Boy Records, we're once again met with the ingenious East Coast stylings of early hits like 'O.P.P.' and 'Everything's Gonna Be All Right'. A common theme is rags-to-riches and the achievement of glory through hardship, though the tracks' optimistic tone overall tends to jut through this originally bleak subject matter. Later hits like 'Feel Me Flow' and remixes from Crazy C and QD III also feature.

Review: Originally released in 1990, Extinction would serve as the sole full-length from New York crust punk pioneers Nausea. While not the first band of misfits to amplify the angst and visceral aggression of hardcore, they are often cited with being integral to the genre's expansion and incorporation of equally heinous sonics from the realms of doom and sludge metal as well as d-beat, with their Discharge influence worn proudly on their tattered sleeves. Equally inspired by the anarcho-punk messaging of Crass, their lyrics urgently represented their views on feminism, anti-racism, anti-war and class conflict, while their apocalyptic world view rivalled that of their peers in Amebix. Delivered with an unmatched vitriol indicative of the time in which they were penned and further bolstered by the now iconically chaotic push-pull of dual vocalists Al Long and Amy Miret, it's bizarre to track the career of drummer Roy Mayorga who would go on to become a mainstay in mainstream metal fulfilling tenure with the likes of Soulfly, Stone Sour, and presently Ministry. Following Svart Records' recent 12" reissue/compilation of the Cybergod and Lie Cycle EPs, the label brings this nihilistic classic home to wax after two decades of absence.

The album also features tracks from artists like Donald Fagen, Michael McDonald, Shuggie Otis, Nohelani Cypriano, and Toshiki Kadomatsu, all given the special Nautilus treatment. Review: Japanese jazz-funk trio Nautilus's Sunrise is a vibrant album packed with their signature blend of tight grooves, lush melodies and soulful synths. Drawing inspiration from classic 70s jazz-funk while infusing modern sensibilities, this record delivers a signature dynamic sound that's both nostalgic and fresh. Intricate instrumentation defines it with leader Toshiyuki Sasaki's precise drumming, Shunsuke Umino's fluid basslines and Daisuke Takeuchi's expressive keys driving each track. Highlights include shimmering originals and inventive reinterpretations that once again cement Nautilus as a cornerstone of contemporary jazz-funk innovation.

Review: Nautilus are one of the most prominent outfits out right now to embody the rare groove scene. Here the three-piece demonstrate their lesser-spotted musical spectacularity with a sun-soaked, serotonin-packed new record. A perfect introduction to the band's craft, which spans both covers and originals, we've first Oasis with a version of 'Wonderwall', followed by honourable takes on Thelonious Monk and Yusef Lateef, and then the Nautilus originals 'Overflowing' and 'Cosmic Maze'. All tracks feature the spangling voices of Emi Tawata and Rayamada, each of whom compliment the keyed, vocoder-steeped, and abundant playing of Toshiyuki Sasaki, Shigeki Umezawa and Daisuke Takeuchi.

Review: Nayeon's second mini album, NA, marks a triumphant return with a mature and confident sound. The title track, 'ABCD,' is a standout, showcasing a more adult concept than her previous hit 'POP!' With its infectious pre-chorus and chorus, the song spells out a catchy message of love and assurance, perfectly fitting Nayeon's evolving artistic style. The music video amplifies the track's impact, featuring dynamic outfit changes and a powerful dance break that exudes Beyonce-level energy. The rest of the NA album continues this high standard. 'Magic,' featuring Julie of Kiss Of Life, is memorable with its mystical production and strong bass, blending Nayeon's vocals and raps seamlessly with Julie's contributions. ,'Heaven' featuring Sam Kim, highlights Nayeon's vocal versatility, offering a harmonious blend of male and female perspectives. Each track on the six-song project is nicely produced, capturing the vibrant energy of summer and showing off a different take on pop music.

This visionary work is a blend of musical genres, serving as both a musical experience and a platform for social change. Additionally, spoken word performances by Staceyann Chin and Hilton Als add depth and meaning to the album. Review: The Necks return with their latest album Bleed, a single, expansive 42-minute composition that delves into the delicate beauty of decay and space. As one of Australia's most daring and long-standing minimalist-jazz groups, the trioiChris Abrahams on piano, Tony Buck on drums, and Lloyd Swanton on bassicrafts yet another unique piece in their vast body of work. Formed in 1987, The Necks have become known for their extended, improvisational compositions that patiently unravel, building subtle intensity through repeated musical motifs. Bleed is no exception, but the atmosphere they create here feels both familiar and fresh. The album masterfully balances stillness and tension, exploring themes of desolation and transformation with understated elegance. Released to mark the group's 35th anniversary in 2022, Bleed showcases their remarkable ability to evolve while staying true to their distinctive sound. The slow, meditative pace allows each note and texture to breathe, inviting listeners to get lost in its spacious, evolving soundscape. With this release, The Necks continue to push the boundaries of minimalist jazz.

Track 1 (20:57)
Track 2 (21:17)
Review: The Necks' 20th studio album, Bleed, is an unbroken 42-minute composition that delves into the rich, unsettling beauty of stillness. Known for their minimalist jazz, the Australian trio takes their distinctive approach even further here, turning silence and decay into instruments as potent as any piano or drum. Each second feels like a meditation on space, where nothing is rushed, and every shift matters. It's a single composition, yet it feels like an endless expanse of possibilities, each sound lingering in the air before dissolving into the next. Pressed on Indie Exclusive Green Vinyl, Bleed is another masterclass from The Necks, a group that has never been content to rest on past achievements. They stretch the limits of jazz in a way that few other artists could, inviting the listener into a world where stillness isn't an absence but a presence. The sounds feel tactile, almost organic, as if they were born from the earth itself, then slowly decayed. Each listen offers something different, some new texture or note that was missed before, making Bleed a record that grows with you, becoming more complex and rewarding with time. It's minimalist, yes, but not in the cold, distant senseithis is music that pulls you in, demands your attention, and rewards it with an almost spiritual sense of calm.
