Review: Devonte Hynes has long been one of independent music's most unique artists: a multi-instrumentalist, producer and vocalist whose music brilliantly joins the dots between '80s soul, '90s R&B, guitar-based dream-pop, hip-hop, new jack swing and psychedelia. To date, he's not released a duff album, and "Angel Pulse" - his fifth studio set - is another winner. Interestingly, it's said to be a "prequel" to last year's "Negro Swan" and is structured like a hip-hop mix-tape, with tracks segueing into each other and a superbly soulful flow. Its 14 tracks are as evocative and emotion-rich as you'd expect, with an impressive roll call of guest vocalists and MCs swinging by to add their own distinctive twist to Hynes' impeccable backing tracks.

Review: Dev Hynes is the British producer, singer and songwriter who has a disarming sound that mixes r&b, soul and 80s pop. His latest album is another tender and vulnerable affair with drum lead minimalism on tracks like "Baby Florence (Figure)", US hip hop on "Gold Teeth" and the pop tinged "Benzo." It is a joyous listen that recalls the classic homemade mixtape vibes of the 90s, where moods chop and change but are united by a certain joyfulness. Angel's Pulse is a simmering soundtrack to a lovestruck day in the park or a romantic sunset but one that has political undertones when you listen closely enough.

Having already delivered long players from Cat Power, Bob Moses and Villagers just this year alone, they are now turning to Devonte Hynes who is no stranger to the label either. Negro Swan provides the London artist with his fourth studio album which in large draws from the lost souls of '90s pop. It's hard not to hear Michael Jackson, Phil Collins and R&B four pieces all at once in tracks like "Saint", and even "Charcoal Baby", while there's even suggestion of Will Powers' spoken charm in the words to "Family". More Contemporary touches of genre are there in the emotional, beat pop of tracks like "Chewing Gum" and "Nappy Wonder" without forgetting the tropes of neo soul in "Holy Will". Review: Round two of remixes to accompany the return of Devonte Hynes under his new musical endeavour Blood Orange and further evidence that Domino employ a crack team of scene observers to inform their remix commissioning. Whereas the first release saw In Flagranti and Krystal Klear tackle tracks from the forthcoming Coastal Grooves, everyone's favourite Venetian Bottin shares duties with the fully flexing Irish duo Bicep. The horror disco don calls shotgun with a suitably analogue filled freakout of "The Complete Knock" which keeps the percussive leanings to a minimum to allow the ankle hugging bass and multiple arpeggiated synth directions space to shine. On the flip, Bicep serve up a further taste of their burgeoning production chops, tackling "Sutphin Boulevard" and serving up a sleazy low slung cosmic jam perfectly suited for the sweaty basement spaces the duo spend the early hours of most weekends in.

Review: Formerly part of the risible Test Icicles and previously known as Lightspeed Champion, the now New York-based Devonte Hynes will release Coastal Grooves his 'official' debut album under the Blood Orange pseudonym, later this summer. As a precursor, he's put together this low-price "mixtape" of home recordings, demos and cast-offs to whet our appetites. Given its piecemeal nature, Home Recordings Mixtape is a pretty tasty collection. Apparently originally designed to accompany his various late-night drives around New York City, it neatly blurs the boundaries between glassy-eyed 80s synth grooves, soft rock, slow jams, blue-eyed soul and late night AM radio favourites. Naturally, it's pretty stylized and there's an air of the too-cool-for-school about it, but the effervescent quality of the ultra-atmospheric music on offer easily outweighs such misgivings.

Review: Remixers must jump at the chance to work with a Junior Boys vocal and this time around it's Carl Craig who has caught the bouquet. CC works the "Like A Child" vocal to perfection, pitching it alongside harmonious synths, a body moving bass line and subtle percussion. Mike Simonetti hits up some indie dance vibes in his remix to Blood Orange's "Champagne Coast" as a walking bass line embraces washed-out vocals and shimmering synths.

Review: Given his love of vintage synthesizers, '80s soul and soft-focus pop, it's little surprise to find Blood Orange (AKA producer Devonte Hynes) handling production duties on this latest extended 'mini album' from Beyonce's little sister Solange Knowles. Having previously had a stab at stardom, Solange now seems to be pursuing more of an underground agenda, delivering material that flits between classic Madonna ("Losing You", the excellent Verdine Version of "Bad Girls"), '80s slow jams ("Looks Good With Trouble") and slick, AOR-inspired R&B pop (the superb "Don't Let Me Down"). Hynes production is sympathetic and authentic of the period, nudging Solange further towards her goal of underground stardom.
