Review: The Damned are synonymous with the 1977 punk sound, with their tracks 'New Rose' and 'Neat Neat Neat' perhaps their best and arguably among the most iconic punk songs of all time. But ill content to rehash old tropes they set about writing more upbeat melodic tunes for Strawberries, which challenged their older fanbase at the time, who were used to thrashy three-chord rabble-rousing punk. The Damned frontman, David Vanian, is cited in the band's biography as saying that fans weren't up for the new material and said: "It's like giving strawberries to a f**king pig, this gig, you know?", which is where the album title came from. Nevertheless, this album did well in the charts with the sound of harmony vocals, cellos, sitars and brass sections, spliced into their hard punk DNA, delighting critics. It was also great timing - they were riding the coattails of guitarist Captain Sensible's solo success and number one single shortly before this album came out in 1982. Some 42 years later, the record is still a standout and in hindsight a deserved success that proves throwing caution to the wind and not delivering exactly what their fans expected of them was still the best way to go about business.

Review: AD 2022: Live In Manchester is the long overdue live album from seminal homegrown punk legends The Damned, who announced plans in 2020 to undertake a reunion tour with the original line up of Dave Vanian (vocals), Brian James (guitar), Captain Sensible (bass), and Rat Scabies (drums), but naturally had to put things on hold due to the pandemic. Finally making good on their promise and reuniting for the first time in over four decades to descend upon Manchester's O2 Apollo in November 2022 for an immense set of 21 tracks taken from the band's first two (and only) albums to ever feature the classic OG line up; Damned Damned Damned and Music For Pleasure, both initially released in 1977, feast your ears on a true fly-on-the-wall experience if you were one of the many miserable millions to not experience such an iconic rarity in person that night.

Review: Following the announcement in October 2020 that the OG line up of seminal homegrown punks The Damned featuring Dave Vanian (vocals), Brian James (guitar), Captain Sensible (bass), and Rat Scabies (drums), would reunite for their first batch of reunion shows in over four decades, the pandemic quickly disagreed and forced the members to push back their run until November 2022. AD 2022: Live In Manchester delivers the group's iconic set at Manchester's O2 Apollo made up of 21 classic cuts from their 1977 debut full-length Damned Damned Damned and its same-year sophomore follow up Music For Pleasure (the only two projects all four original members performed on).

Review: Not to be confused with our own homegrown horror-punk legends, this preceding The Damned were a short-lived Dutch glam rock studio-only project, who's one release of note is this long out of print Morning Bird 7", accompanied by the proto-disco groove of B-side 'Theta'. Available on wax for the first time in 50 years, this slept on neon-tinted holy grail of glam originally came courtesy of iconic producer Miki Dallon (The Sorrows, Boys Blue, Shakane, New York Dolls) for his Young Blood International label in 1974.

Review: Taken from their now iconic performance on 6th July 1976 at London's 100 Club, this live LP was originally released in 2007 as an accompanying bonus disc to the 30th anniversary deluxe version of The Damned's seminal 1977 debut full-length Damned Damned Damned. Landing on its own exclusive, limited and numbered red/black splattered vinyl 12", the set is noted for being the band's first official live show, as they provided support for the Sex Pistols, while guitarist Brian James has since elaborated that while the members were paid L5 for the gig by Pistols' manager Malcolm McLaren, they were also charged L10 to use their PA system. Not very punk if you ask us.

Review: Shadowed Tales From Mulhouse by iconic punk group The Damned is a haunting journey into the depths of musical darkness. The album captivates throughout with its eerie melodies, ethereal vocals, and brooding atmosphere. Each track exudes a sense of mystery and intrigue, drawing the audience into a world of shadows and secrets. The band's masterful instrumentation and haunting lyrics create a spine-chilling experience that lingers long after the final note fades away. All of this makes Shadowed Tales From Mulhouse is a testament to The Damned's prowess as musical storytellers, leaving listeners enthralled and eager for more from this enigmatic ensemble.

Review: Shadowed Tales From Mulhouse captures punk's original rebels in live action in 1994, feeling like a return to their rowdy garage punk origins after spending the latter part of the 80s helping to shape goth rock and then take it overground and into the charts. No sign of 'Eloise' or 'Grimy Fiendish' here though - this all about genre-defining hits like 'Love Song', 'Neat Neat Neat', 'New Rose' and 'Smash It Up', with a heap of perfectly suited and totally unlikely cover versions, from 'Pretty Vacant' to 'You've Lost That Loving Feeling' and 'I Walk The Line'. All on nice coloured vinyl, too, it stands as a testament to The Damned's storytelling prowess, leaving audiences enthralled and craving more from this enigmatic ensemble.

Review: 'Neat Neat Neat' might have only been the second single released by The Damned, but its timeless longevity as an essential punk staple has seen it appear in episodes of The Simpsons and The Boys while Edgar Wright would give the track yet another lease on life by using it to score the intense opening chase sequence in 2017's Baby Driver. That's before even mentioning the vastly differing artists it has influenced with everyone from My Chemical Romance to Elvis Costello taking a stab. Pressed to artwork complimenting purple wax, this 7" offers a slice of cuts captured during a set in Mulhouse, France in 1994, with the classic single on the A-side, while the flip boasts a dynamic yet bizarre bevvy of covers, from the likes of iconic pop duo The Righteous Brothers ('You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin') to 60's mods The Craig ('I Must Be Mad') to Johnny Cash's 'I Walk The Line'.

Review: Following 'New Rose' as only the second ever single released by The Damned, 'Neat Neat Neat' has gone on to become, not only one of the band's biggest hits, but a timeless punk anthem used in everything from series like The Boys and The Simpsons, to the epic heist/chase sequence in Edgar Wright's Baby Driver, to even being covered by vastly differing acts from Elvis Costello to My Chemical Romance. This vibrantly coloured 7" captures a handful of cuts from a 1994 live performance in Mulhouse, France, boasting the aforementioned single on the A-side with a curious selection of covers on the flip, ranging from Johnny Cash's 'I Walk The Line' to 'You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' from The Righteous Brothers and even a rendition of 60s mod originals The Craig's 'I Must Be Mad' lobbed in for good measure.

Review: Here's a classic live album from British punk heroes The Damned, captured in full flight at Woolwich Coronet on July 11 1985. Wrongly credited to a gig at Santa Monica Civic when it was originally released back in 1997, the facts have since been set straight but whatever the case, this is the band at their best. There's all the best bits of their back catalogue and even some choice covers such as the Electric Prunes' ever-classic 'I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night' and Iggy Pop's 'Lust For Life' - and that's just the icing on top of a set brimming with kick ass punk rock.

Review: This classic compilation album by legendary punk rock band The Damned first came as a 1981 release on Chiswick, dubbed the 'first true indie' label to crop up in the UK. Responsible for pushing many of this condemnable bunch's best works, this compilation is representative of the process, covering the band's evolution from their fast and furious debut Damned Damned Damned to their more experimental and diverse Black Album. Wide-ranging but unified in sound, it's testament to the Damned's long shelf-life; they don't call it "eternal damnation" for nothing.

Review: They say it's bad form to swear when writing - a lazy tactic betraying a vocabulary redundant of what's required to make an eloquent impact. Respecting the rule takes every ounce of strength when you're penning words on The Damned, who now lay claim to 46 - yes, 46 - years in the rock 'n' roll game. Evidently genes really do count for much when it comes to putting your body through music's rollercoaster/meat-grinder.
Returning for studio album number 12, Darkadelic is everything the band have always been, which is many things to many people. Having helped launch punk and created goth, circa 2023 they band have long-since learnt to master the art of both, occupying a position that's really best described as dedicated heavy rock business. Still witty, scathing, and observant, still driving, punchy, and commanding, innovative, experimental and - perhaps most of all - theatric, we're not sure where we'd be without them.

Review: Just a few nights before Halloween of 2019, The Damned brought, 'A Night Of A Thousand Vampires', to the London Palladium with the help of The Hammer House of Horror and cast of The Circus of Horrors. What transpired was a truly immersive, theatrical, career-spanning set delivered with a level of artistic showmanship that only the iconic horror-punks could pull off so brazenly. Recorded and filmed for immortalisation (or undead resurrection), you can now witness the orchestrated carnage in true fly-on-the-wall, slasher movie voyeuristic fashion.

Review: Just in time for Halloween comes this special Live in London album from The Damned. The band recorded their uniquely theatrical brand of rock on October 28th, 2019 when they were on stage at London's celebrated Palladium Theatre. The show was an immersive musical and theatrical experience that saw them firmly tear through their 40-odd-year back catalog and leave fans screaming for more. Plenty of classics as well as moments of suitable shock and awe all made the set and sound great on this pressing.

Review: The first definitive British punk album, Damned Damned Damned, would serve as the arrival of a new form of audible angst, that over four decades later has still managed to maintain its bite and snarl. Originally released on Stiff Records in 1977, National Album Day 2022 has insisted on bringing this highly influential classic to life in a new pressing; teeming with energy, wit and enough proto-genre bending to remind all why The Damned are still an integral aspect of any discussion regarding UK punk and alternative music nearly a half century on.

Review: The sixth album from The Damned, released in 1985, can still be considered one of the London punk legends' most dynamic and intriguing affairs. Ignoring the fact that it was their highest charting release until 2018's 'Evil Spirits', the project features extra focus on vocalist Dave Vanian's deep, sultry yet menacing gothic croon. In essence, this was the goth-rock phase for the group, and while somewhat of an outlier with regards to the rest of their discography, it remains an essential and unique piece of homegrown 80's era punk.
