Another Channel - "East Slope Dub" (4:35)
Mantsche - "Unknown Dub Story" (feat Bishop) (4:08)
Masis - "Mount Zion" (4:12)
Stefan Dubs - "Saudrune Dub" (5:28)
Stacktrace - "Heal" (5:49)
Review: Egregore Collective's second outing is another serious one that brings together five specialists from the world of deep dub music. Another Channel opens and plunges into a cavernous oceanic abyss with 'East Slope Dub' before Mantsche's 'Unknown Dub Story' (feat Bishop) has rippling chords that disappear to an infinite horizon while the paddy drums churn slowly below. There's an authentic dub feel to the endlessly wide open spaces of Masis's 'Mount Zio' and the flip brings more dark but delightful dub from Stefan Dubs and Stacktrace.

Subground 3000 - "Sound Migration" (Lee Trax Garage remix) (6:38)
Jim Rivers - "Cosmos" (8:31)
Melatron & Ancient Artefact - "I Get My Kicks" (6:53)
Review: The latest compilation album from COD3 QR is, as always, focused on eclecticism, open-mindedness, divergence and non-conformity, featuring the usual wide range of electronic music, all handpicked by Laurent Garnier and Scan X. The vinyl edition of this very latest edition of the compilation series - which was embarked upon in not long after the longstanding but mysterious label was revealed to be the fruits of the labours of this legendary duo, who had until then ran it incognito - comes as a condensed version of the digital, on which a terse seven tracks from the likes of Calibre, Seroplexx, Costello, Marcelus, Subground 3000, Lee Trax, Jim Rivers, Melatron and Ancient Artifact all appear. Though the label has set a high expectation with their admonition against "all expectations and all prejudices", they actually do extremely well to fulfil that aim. Most contributions here - from the steppy, sloppy 'Sump Dub to the just-plain-monstrous 'I Get My Kicks' - tend towards on the uncategorisable and unpigeonholeable, at least in terms of overtly boxed-in genre norms.

Heavy Smoke (4:34)
Review: Chad Dubz's Foundation Audio label outta Bristol remains a leading light in the bass, sound system and dubstep scene. This time out it is Kroomen and Somah who pair up for some mysterious late-night transmissions designed to rattle the walls. 'Kaba Rhythm' manages to be both light and airy yet dark and heavy all at once, with some Eastern melodies leading you ever deeper into the shadows. 'Sub 37' is all lurching kicks and skittish perc with twisted metallic textures and 'Heavy Smoke' is a slow and purposeful rhythm that takes its time to lure you in. It's golden-era dubstep that is as atmospheric as it is inviting.

Quasar & Nova - "Witchcraft" (dub) (5:09)
Saule & Centauri - "Tyrant" (5:10)
Teffa & Sound Unknown - "Hide & Seek" (4:42)
Review: Dubstep doesn't get much deeper than the tunes on this meaty new Various Artists collection from 786. The title suggests it is the start of a new ongoing series, which is music to the ears of bass fiends everywhere. Mr K & DPRTNDRP kick off with 'Suppression,' with its menacing energy and churning hits, while Quasar & Nova team up for the excellent low end wobble and playful sense of funk that is deeply embedded in the rhythm of 'Witchcraft.' Saule & Centauri's 'Tyrant' is a pressurised cut with a freaky vocal and edgy synth stabs over woden hits. Sparse but atmospheric, it's just one of four killers here. The last is the drilling bass weight of Teffa & Sound Unknown's mystic 'Hide & Seek.' Great stuff.

Review: Brussels' Sagat is making ever more of a name for himself with his bass-heavy sounds and wonky perspective on rhythm. This time out he blends great harmony, trippy designs and innovative groove patterns on an EP for the fledgling Private Stress. '8 Legs' is a roaming percussive rattler, 'Floor Structure' taps into classic bass and dub and 'Yeah Tomorrow' brings more light and airy melody over a skiing and broken beat low end that makes you want to rise to your toes. 'DN2' shuts down with a menacing atmosphere and eerie pads.

Whatever Is Touched Turns (5:04)
Review: This is a big one; Ohm Resistance marks 20 years with the return of the artist they kicked the label off with: Mick Harris. Back then he was operating under the name Quoit but you may well know him as Painkiller, Fret, Clang, a founder member of Napalm Death or, for the purposes of this release, Scorn. His first track as Scorn in seven years, it brings down the brutality he left us with on last year's Fret album and instead plunges us into a deep swampy sea of ominous tense dub. All versions of "Feather" score a nuclear fallout. Bleak, unhurried, barren and isolating. "Whatever Is Touched Turns" closes the show with a long soak in a deep harmonic bassbin bath tub. Welcome back Scorn.

This powerful second volume takes off where the inaugural instalment left us, it's another snapshot into the future of dubstep as it celebrates the new generation of innovative production talent keeping the 140 vibe alive into the 2020s. Review: Now this is what we call good housekeeping... Adrian felt he had a few too many leftover ideas after his impeccable fourth album Survival & Resistance this summer, so he's consolidated them on this EP. But don't go expecting to hear off-cuts like some lame DVD extra, each of the four pieces are bashy, hypnotising hits of dancefloor dynamite delivered with Sherwood's mystic depths and imagination. From the blissful depths of the Horace Andy and violin flavoured "Semistoned" to the rusty jungle vibes of "Entrapment", this is the best way of recycling ideas we've heard in a long time.

Review: Oyvind Morken might not be that well known outside of his hometown of Oslo, but this debut release for Full Pupp is testament to the Norwegian city's ever bustling scene. Described by the label as 'Oslo's ultimate DJ,' Morken's also been running the under rated Lunarflicks label alongside DJ Strangefruit of Mungolian Jetset fame and Fjordfunk's Kango since 2008, issuing material from Diskjokke, Hardway Bros and Skatebard. Such a sense of curation demonstrates Morken knows his onions and it's clearly rubbed off on his production style. The 3 cuts here fit snugly into the Full Pupp canon, betraying a cheeky mastery of analogue hardware that veers through New Beat, classic house and flatulent disco.

Review: On Tell Me, Skeptical capitalises on the freedom afforded by his own Rubi label by dialling back his established d&b sound and presenting a half-time trip into downtempo territory. That shouldn't be mistaken as a softening of his production chops, because there's still massive amounts of weight as he warps snarling bass around stark drums on 'Tapestry'. 'Atomic' goes further into a minimal, dubbed out sound with carefully executed low end growl which carries the torch from DMZ's earliest soundsystem meditations.

Ranging from the sultry pop soul of the Kelis-fronted "Copy Cat" to the classic Croydon savagery of "Vacillate" and "Scrooge's Revenge", it's one of the broadest "Skreamizm" collections to date. Review: Skruff has already made his mark on labels like Dub Communication, Soil & Sound and Brightest Dark Place, and now backs that up with another great outing on Challenger Deep. What he serves up is a brillaint blend of the conscious roots music of the ear dub days with much more widescreen, cavernous, contemporary dub soundscapes.'Elders Dub' is a liquid cut with muttered vocals adding cerebral depth to the literal depth of the dub, while the flip is another engaging sound both physically and spiritually. This one comes on hand-stamped 12" and is a crucial cop.

Here comes another of their fine transmissions, ready and waiting to rattle your ribs and test your bowels. Somah is at the buttons for the four cuts and kicks off with 'Irked' which has inky bass and haunting late night leads over a heavy but deft bottom end. 'Mirrors' pairs more eerie empty space with echoing hits and distant sirens and 'Cold Chain' has a warmer, even slightly soulful sound thanks to the pad work. 'Unmarked' closes with a clatter of percussive menace.

Review: Following the immense mini-album sized 'Carpe Noctem' in December and the massive 'Mourner VIP' last year, Johann Sorrow returns to Fent Plates once again with another collection of emotional, introspective slow garage jams. 'Art Is Dead' takes the lead with a surprisingly uplifting air about it before Sorrow rolls out every shade of feeling in its wake; 'Paramount' is a hard-hitting poignant track with bold swaggering kicks and layers of pads above, 'Girl I Miss You' looks west for inspiration as we're treated to a glimpse of Sorrow's hip-hop side before 'My Love' brings the EP together on a sublime, slow-house style 4x4 that's laced with heavy layers of chords, choral textures and an overall sense that maybe everything might actually be okay. Art is dead. Long live art.

Review: Febt Plates have prepared some fresh, marbled vinyl editions of some of the most sought-after EPs from their bulging back catalogue. The latest to get this treatment is Johann Healing AKA Sorrow's first outing for the imprint, 2019's Carpe Noctern. It's a pleasingly relaxed and musically intricate affair, with the Bristol-based producer effortlessly joining the dots between echoing ambient, head-nodding deep dubstep, R&B-sampling blissfulness, deep two-step garage and hard-to-pigeonhole wooziness. While there are cuts that you could happily play in the club, the joy of the set is its immersive, eyes-closed feel, making it far more suitable for horizontal home listening.

Review: Frankly, we cannot get enough of the beautifully powerful breakbeats that Stenny serves up, most often on Ilian Tape. They manage to be heavy and physical but so meticulously well crafted that they also somehow sound artful. Here on opener 'Wipe Out' scuffed-up claps brush up against busted synth motifs and bulbous bass as crisp hits drive things on. On the flip, 'Permission' ups the ante with drums and hits making along a warehouse floor with raves synth stabs adding light and edginess. It is the perfect dancing material for the dead of night on lovely heavyweight vinyl.

Review: The deep techno lovers at the Modern Hypnosis label have got Sub Basics on a new 12" that will lock you into a meditative state from the off. 'Offshore' is first up and ride son icy, minimal and gently broken techno loops that are fluffed out with deft synths and wispy pads. 'E443' is another super paired back sound with a quiet, late-night approach to floating and loopy techno. 'T441' has skittish rhythms and warped synths suspending you in mid-air while closer 'Lucid' (feat Traces) has a darker intensity to its lurching drums and pulsating synth lines.

Review: Taking fully after Scientist's original formula of weighty sonics combined with comical covers, producer Sub Basics puts a welcome deep dubstep spin on such things with their fresh new 12", 'Lift Off' and 'Shipment'. This is essentially 'Scientist Gets In a Row With the FedEx Courier' but better: this intergalactic shipment is full to the brim with pre-cut dubplate PVC, adding a legitimacy to the argument: to abet the transportation of such immensely valuable items rarely results in an entirely smooth or unstressful operation; rows are almost bound to ensue. Fittingly, on pressing play, we are compelled to move with the ambition of a freight ship's lightspeed, motorically reacting to both tracks' sub-50hz singularities with a total instinctual reflexivity.

The EP kicks off with 'Roll Up', a shimmering broken beat track with cosmic dub undertones that sets a deep celestial vibe at just 115 BPM. The title track, 'Rhino', is just as captivating and is a cheeky progressive dub techno piece with dynamic dub-stabs creating diverse grooves that will energise dance floors no end. On the flip side, 'Haze' and 'Fluctuate' showcase hypnotic dub techno mastery once more with 'Fluctuate' in particular incorporating lush dub elements. Sub Basics delivers another standout release for collectors and selectors alike here.

This new and heavily limited 12" features four cuts from it. 'Internet Explorer' is a silky deep techno workout with lithe rhythms and watery dub undercurrents, while 'Configuration' has heavier drums and eerie synth wisps that bring cosmic ambience to the fore. Review: Bait is a label run by Beatrice M that has built up a fine following for its digital releases and has also now made the successful move to vinyl. Sub Basics is next up and is a key UK figure in the deep dubstep scene who has had big support for his tunes on the likes of Lion Charge, Foundation Audio and Juan Forte from Ben U.F.O. and Kia. The Miami-based Jamaican made some seminal, stunning music that presaged the increasing importance of synthesisers in disco and dance music overall. This time the label have decided to give a regal airing to a cut previously only available squeezed onto the Deep Reggae Roots LP. "Safari" is a heady brew that keeps a necessary skank in the groove while channeling the nagging funk of The Meters and heading somewhere exotic. At just under four minutes, it's the kind of jam that warrants an extended treatment, and who better to do a respectful job than Lexx, who more than doubles the run time of the track on the B side.

Review: You sometimes get the feeling Tectonic boss Rob 'Pinch' Ellis finds particular enjoyment in the process of collaboration, be it with younger artists such as Roska and Mumdance or more iconic names like Shackleton and Adrian Sherwood. The latter dub pioneer first hooked up with Pinch for a brace of excellent 12"s on his long running On U Sound label back in 2013, and the clear studio chemistry shown there made the notion of a joint LP a near certainty. Late Night Endless sees ten tracks from Sherwood's deep discography deconstructed by the pair, with the resultant fusion a deft balance of Pinch's urban paranoia and Sherwood's interstellar dub. On tracks like "Gimme Some More (Tight Like That)" and "Different Eyes" it's displayed with devastating mastery!

It's true that the Leeds-based seven-piece are in fine form, with the string-drenched, early-evening-at-a-festival feel of their more downtempo offerings (highlighted by the fragile, folksy vocals of Ruby Turner) off-set by a selection of tracks that draw more deeply on dubstep, dancefloor jazz, soul and surging electronica influences. Do The Jazz
Review: Long Live The Jazz is the ambitious new set from Butterz associate Swindle, nominally the London producer's third album and most high profile to boot, finding a welcome home on Deep Medi Musik. Since his emergence in 2009, Swindle's stood out in grime and dubstep circles thanks to a propensity to pepper his productions with the influences of his childhood heroes, such as George Clinton and Roy Ayers. Following releases on Planet Mu, Rwina and Butterz, Swindles ascension to Mala's label with last year's Do The Jazz 12" set the tone for what to expect on this LP. "Do The Jazz" closes the album and remains as fun as was upon 12" release last year, whilst the equally deranged trad dubstep of recent cut "Forest Funk" also features amongst this highly enjoyable 13 track set.
