Angolan Rumble EP
Cat: DISCOBAR 004. Rel: 25 Apr 16

Minimal House/Tech House
Angolan Rumble (10:12)
Suckerfish (7:13)
Snitch (9:59)
Review: British minimal upstarts Alex & Digby are back for French artists Guillaume Taillieu and Lamache's Discobar imprint. If this is anything like their last release "Crowhurst" then we'd best be excited. Rest assured they do indeed bring the goods once again on "Angolan Rumble", where they deliver some reduced grooves that glitch and bump about the place like classic Perlon or Minibar. "Suckerfish" follows in suit but this one is a sweet serving of minimal funk that reminds us more of DBX. Finally on the flip we've got "Snitch" which is probably the most advanced offering on here, with some great textural sound design and mood settings which tumbles way in restrained fashion delightfully over its ten minute duration.

Lost In Misty Byways EP

Minimal House/Tech House
Auguste III (8:27)
Lost In Misty Byways (7:25)
ChelbergerHo (6:20)
Review: Berlin based Robin Ordell is most known as the main man behind London's notorious Half Baked parties and the affiliated record label. Appearing here with his second release for fellow Frenchmen Discobar since 2016's brilliant Breakfast In Arkham. "Auguste III" is a trippy and reduced groove that's on the lean side (as always) allowing all those analogue blips and blurps to most of the talking. On the flip "Lost In Misty Byways" is more direct: this bumpin' minimalist groove is dark and twisted but above all: perfect for the afterhours. Finally "ChelbergerHo" is a not so subtle reference to the renowned Friedrichshain DJ hotel, albeit not the kind of track you'd hear in that place anyway. Again, it's a reduced and hypnotic affair that will appeal to fans of Berlin's new garde of minimalists, such as Spacetravel or Saverio Celestri.

Breakfast In Arkham EP
Cat: DISCOBAR 005. Rel: 30 Jun 16

Minimal House/Tech House
Breakfast In Arkham (7:00)
Zephyr's Troubled Years (5:14)
22nd Of Sometimes (6:40)
87% (6:43)
Review: Half Baked main man Robin Ordell is back, following up some great releases for Eklo and Finest Hour recently with the Breakfast in Arkham EP for Parisian imprint Discobar. It's the same analogue mini-funk he's renown for on A side, with the title track and the hilariously titled "Zephyr's Troubled Years" being reminiscent of that classic Perlon sound that guys like Binh and Spacetravel are bringing back, likewise. On the flip, things get even weirder with "22nd Of Sometimes" getting into some druggy and hypnotic after-hours business while "87%" is definitely the most dancefloor friendly track but still doesn't skimp on the heady business with its bumpy groove hypnotism.

Cat: DISCOBAR 08. Rel: 30 Apr 18

Minimal House/Tech House
Space (5:53)
Virgin Virgin (6:51)
Space (Maayan Nidam remix) (5:38)
Berlin 6 (8:17)
Review: Over the last four years, Toulouse twosome Zendid have maintained a steady release schedule, dropping highly regarded EPs on such labels as Elephant Moon, Infuse, Timeframe and Discobar. Here they return to the latter label with a fresh four-track missive. As the title suggests, opener "Space" tends towards to intergalactic, with futurist electronic beeps and weightless chords clustering around a rolling, sub-bass-heavy tech-house groove. "Virgin Virgin" is a deeper, looser and slightly warmer mid set box jam, while "Berlin 6" is a stripped-back, funk-fuelled stomper rich in glitchy stabs and mind-altering bass. The EP also includes a tasty bonus in the shape of Maayan Nidam's smooth, deep and bass-heavy remix of "Space".
