Arnold Layne (Live At Syd Barrett Tribute Concert 2007) (Record Store Day 2020)
Cat: 190295 28368. Rel: 23 Sep 20
Arnold Layne (Recorded live At The Barbican Centre, London At The Syd Barrett Tribute Concert) (3:47)
Review: Here's a Record Store Day 2020 special that all Pink Floyd fans will want to take a look at: an etched, single-sided seven-inch single featuring a previously unreleased version of Piper at the Gates of Dawn-era favourite 'Arnold Lane'. It was recorded at The Madcaps Last Laugh concert in 2007, a tribute to band co-founder Syd Barrett. It features three Floyd members - David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Rick Wright - alongside vocalist Jon Carin, whose singing is very similar to that of Barrett, and bassist Andy Bell. It's a fairly faithful rendition all told, and one with added weight given the travails of Barrett after he left Pink Floyd in the late 1960s.

Review: Fresh from delivering killer dancefloor jazz covers of classics cuts by Galaxy 2 Galaxy and Avicii (really), Japanese trio Polyplus deliver a fine sequel to last year's Good Luck Sound Tracks EP. They go for the dancefloor jugular from the off, wrapping snaking sax solos, fuzzy guitar licks and elongated solos around a breathlessly rapid punk-funk groove on 'Massive', before fusing Brit-Funk and sweat-soaked jazz-rock on 'Speedy Gold'. This hybrid jazz-funk/rock sound continues on 'Ranki 2025' (whose heavy beats and memorable piano riffs nods to classic house). Elsewhere, 'Ocean Breeze' re-frames wide-eyed city-pop as jaunty jazz-funk and 'Natural Born' is a drum solo-sporting slab of jazz-rock/jazz-fusion insanity straight from the top drawer.

Review: Project Gemini led by Paul Osborne presented its latest album Colours & Light recently and it again made an impact with its folk rock, psych soundtracks and cinematic funk sounds showing a more confident and layered sound compared to his debut. This is a limited 7" taken from the upcoming Deluxe Edition of the album with a distortion-laden, progressive rock remix by Jack Sharp of Wolf People/Large Plants, along with an unreleased original track from the album's recording sessions.

Review: P'Cock are perhaps not as celebrated as you might expect given Klaus Schulze's suggestion that their catalogue contains some of "the best fusions of electronics and rock music". This double disc set offers up remastered versions of their first two albums, which were released in 1980 and 1981 respectively. On Prophet (CD1), the German band outlines their take on post-krautrock progressive rock - all synth-heavy instrumental, soaring songs, surprisingly funky workouts (see the excellent 'Silver Swallow') and proto-Balearic ('N1, 4'). Its sequel, In'Cognito, is an altogether mellower and more jazz-fusion influenced affair, with nods towards the kind of music Todd Rundgren made with his Utopia project, guitar-solo laden space rock, and intergalactic, ambient-leaning soundscapes ('My Pollution').

Review: Alan Parsons' The Time Machine stands as a remarkable achievement in his discography, set to be released on clear green 180-gram vinyl in a striking gatefold package with a four-page booklet. This album showcases Parsons at his creative zenith, featuring a blend of stellar tracks that highlight his evolving sound. The album flourishes with emotional ballads such as 'Ignorance Is Bliss' and the poignant 'The Very Last Time', enhanced by a standout female vocalist. The ethereal 'The Call of the Wild' and the intriguing mix of electronic and classical elements in 'Far Ago and Long Away' reflect Parsons' willingness to explore new musical landscapes. Featuring guest performances from renowned artists like Tony Hadley and Colin Blunstone, alongside contributions from Ian Bairnson and Stuart Elliott - who are no strangers to Parsons' work - it perfectly encapsulates his musical journey making it a valuable find for those who appreciate his legacy.

River Oblivion builds on previous works in that it blends all the electronic intricacies of their debut with the newly added orchestral manoeuvres of their second. This fresh, supersonic journey takes us through the mind of writer Trewin Howard as it was during the many different highs and lows of those dark pandemic days. A real rollercoaster that will keep you coming back for more.

Review: A treat for Pink Floyd fans, as recordings of two legendary concerts from 1969 - sneakily captured by members of the audience - are bundled together on one must-check CD. The first seven tracks showcase a portion of the legendary band's distinctively psychedelic performance at Plumpton Racecourse, Sussex (then host to the 'National Jazz and Blues Festival'), offering up twisted, elongated takes on early material (including 'Set The Controls for the Heart of the Sun' and a fine medley known as 'The Journey'. The final four tracks were recorded in Port Talbot and include breathtakingly brilliant, jammed-out interpretations of 'Careful With That Axe Eugene' and the pinnacle of psychedelic-era Floyd, 'Interstellar Overdrive'.

Review: In the pantheon of prog rock landmarks, none come bigger than The Dark Side Of The Moon. Pink Floyd's magnum opus struck the perfect balance between grandiose vision and universal appeal, carrying relatable themes alongside innovative production and providing the fuel for any psychedelically-minded listener to trip out on a precision crafted trip. As the album celebrates its 50th birthday, this stellar recording of a full live performance of Dark Side... from Wembley in 1974 is seeing its first pressing on vinyl. It's faithful to the album in Floyd's exacting way, but it's also a revelation to hear such a wide scope of sound recreated on stage, not least the likes of 'On The Run'. A fascinating insight into the legacy of a towering, seminal work in the history of modern music.

Review: Prolific Pink Floyd record producer and engineer James Guthrie once again has his 2018 remix album for the band's 'Animals' reissued, this time on limited LP wax. A five-piece meditation on Floyd's penchant for animalism, Guthrie's reinterpretation yanks the Orwellian structure and themes of the original album and hurls them back into an electronic prog rock prayer, with many of the new versions impressively breaching 10 minutes. In true Floyd fashion, this is window-closed, record-sleeves-on-the-floor, bong-hitting stuff, but with an extra Guthriean darkness lended to it. Clock the pig oinks littering the mix too.

Review: Of the legendary shows performed by Pink Floyd over their lengthy career, their gig at Finsbury Park's Rainbow theatre on February 19, 1972 must be one up there with the most celebrated. The band's three hour-plus set contained a performance of the yet-to-be-released classic Dark Side of The Moon album in its entirety, catching fans unaware and marking their transition from psychedelic mavericks to generation-sounding stadium monsters in dramatic fashion. It's that section from the set list that's captured on this live recording, and while you will know the songs - from the plaintive 'Us & Them' to the ejaculatory release of 'Great Gig In The Sky' - these renditions will surely reinvigorate and re-ignite every Floyd's fan's love for them.

Review: Pink Floyd's early era is celebrated on this double LP set, Transmissions, It was a time when they recorded some well regarded sessions for FM radio broadcast and was around legendary albums including A Saucerful Of Secrets - the swansong of the increasingly ill Syd Barrett, replaced by David Gilmour during its making - Ummagumma, Atom Heart Mother and Meddle. Plenty of highlights for fans old and new can be found here, with raw and lo-fi recordings of tunes like 'Daybreak' next to heady melodies and acoustic steaming on the much more organic and spring-day like 'Nightmare (Cymbaline)'. It all comes sounding great across two limited edition slabs of clear vinyl.

This version was mixed in 2019 from original master tapes and has been pressed to heavyweight 180g vinyl at half speed. Review: Oftentimes those albums that people say are the best ever are not even close but one we think actually deserves its place amongst such polls is this one. Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon took prog rock to its logical conclusion and remains an epic listen decades later. Fans will always soak up a newly remastered or extra deluxe version and, of course, any live recordings of their favourite records. And that's what we have here from a legendary show at the building now known as Wembley Arena in 1974, on CD, and magnificent to get lost in.

Review: The classic - or at least most commercial successful - line up of Pink Floyd, caught in live action in London in 1974 playing their most famous album - come to mention it, almost the most famous album of all time. Often derided by some as preposterous prog rock, the Floyd deflect such criticism by balancing the lengthy instrumental sections and overarching concepts with some immensely catchy songwriting and instantly loveable grooves.

Review: The title is lifted from a line in the song from their 1969 studio album, More, which is an acoustic folk ballad titled 'Green Is The Colour': "Heavy is the bond between the hopeful and the damned." Live they slap on a more electric feel with Gilmour's inimitable soloing a strong part of it. The overarching loose, exploratory feel to this collection is a result of Pink Floyd's tendency to improvise and see where the music takes them. Clearly playing for themselves here but nevertheless compelling and awe-inspiring in what they do.

Review: Given that it is the fourth biggest selling artist album of all time, with some 45 million copies in circulation, you'd be forgiven for questioning the point of this 50th anniversary edition of Pink Floyd's most celebrated work. Yet, like the various Beatles albums that have been remastered and remixed in recent years, there is certainly a point to polishing the sound using modern technology. Put simply, 'Dark Side of the Moon', an album that's famously sonically detailed and was painstakingly recorded at the time, has never sounded better. With its mix of ambling progressive rock epics and memorable songs, it has always lent itself to listening on headphones; now, thanks to a sparkling and stunning 2023 mix, it's a more immersive and enveloping listening experience than ever (and that's before we get to the separately available surround sound and Dolby Atmos versions).

Review: In March 1972, Pink Floyd headed to Japan for a live tour debuting their then forthcoming album Dark Side of the Moon. The Travel Sequence presents one of those performances in full, with the legendary prog rock four-piece blending live versions of the as-yet-unreleased set with a smattering of fan favourites and elongated freak-outs. While the recording quality is undeniably fuzzy (the tapes the concert was recorded to had been in storage for over 50 years), the two-disc set captures the band at the peak of their powers. Highlights include still-in-development versions of 'On The Run' and 'The Great Gig in the Sky', a chaotic version of psychedelic fave 'Careful With That Axe Eugene' and a vast, 25-minute extension of 'Echoes' to close the concert.

Review: Celebrating its 50th anniversary, this iconic release - arguably one of if not THE msot famopus rock album of all time - gets an anniversary edition remastering, bringing its revolutionary sound into sharp focus while maintaining the spirit of its original recording. The remaster captures the depth and complexity of the band's vision, from the eerie pulses of 'Speak To Me' that lead into the tranquil yet ominous 'Breathe (In The Air),' to the iconic synth-driven chaos of 'On the Run.' The haunting 'Time' sounds even more immersive, its ticking clocks and swelling synths fully realised in this updated mix. And then there's the unparalleled vocal energy of 'The Great Gig in the Sky,' which now resonates with even greater emotional intensity. On the second side, 'Money' continues to provide that inescapable groove, its jazzy bassline never failing to captivate. 'Us and Them' brings with it a sense of melancholy and philosophical reflection, while 'Any Colour You Like' serves as an entrancing bridge before the chilling introspection of 'Brain Damage' leads into the album's climactic conclusion, 'Eclipse.' For both long-time fans and newcomers, this remaster offers an opportunity to hear the album as it was always meant to be heard, with every nuance and every note given the space it deserves.

Review: The Blu-Ray version of the 2018 remix of Pink Floyd's Animals breathes new life into a classic album, addressing previous issues with the original mix and delivering a significantly improved sonic experience. This reimagined version allows the details to emerge more clearly, giving each instrument ample room to shine. For listeners familiar with earlier editions, it's akin to a revelation, as if something previously clogged in their ears has suddenly cleared. While Animals was released during the heyday of punk rock, its sarcastic and ironic social commentary aligns more with punk's ethos than with traditional progressive rock. However, musically, the album remains a pinnacle of Pink Floyd's progressive sound. David Gilmour's guitar work is particularly notable, with standout moments like the mesmerizing solo on 'Dogs.' Compared to Pink Floyd's other iconic albums like The Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here, Animals holds its own, if not surpassing them in some respects. The album's complexity reveals itself with each listen, rewarding attentive audiences with its intricate compositions and thematic depth.

Atom Heart Mother (16:05)

Review: The title of this three track time capsule from psychedelic prog-rock legends Pink Floyd is apt. As a band, the British heavyweights have always been known for their breathtaking live shows, and this is as much to do with the soaring guitar chords as the cacophonous climaxes, with many tracks given the kind of on-stage upgrade that creates a wild, juggernaut atmosphere. Concerts to lose yourself in. Recorded as the 1960s faded into a new age of rock, one that would see compositions become grander, more conceptual, and, ultimately, heavier, From Oblivion Vol.2: Live In San Diego October 17th 1971 seems to capture the spirit of that moment. A time when technological advancements, and frustration at the commercialisation of other sub genres, were feeding explorations in sound that seemed to look beyond our world and out into the great unknown.

Review: In the post-Syd Barrett years, Pink Floyd spread their sound in a number of directions before settling on the pomp and splendour of Dark Side Of The Moon et al. Atom Heart Mother - their fifth record - finds them tinkering with sonic collage and suite-based songwriting executed with the cinematic scope and inescapable Britishness their music has always possessed. It's an album beloved by the Floyd faithful, and now it's being released as a Special Edition with the original album remastered and a Blu-Ray disc featuring the title track performed live at Hakone Aphrodite in 1971 and additional behind the scenes documentary footage. Throw in a 60-page booklet for good measure and you've got yourself a must-grab piece of Floyd archival material.

Review: Hi-def mono reissue of Floyd's classic 1967 album, remastered in 2017 from the original analog tapes. Known for its rough, crunchy psych sound that predated the band's later, boundless space rock sensibilities, this is the wall-breakers at their most primordial, and their least beat-around-the-bush. This one's been given an anniversary reissue a whopping three times in a row; of course, we should endeavour not to overlook the more perfunctory, audiophiles' rarities such as this. Make sure you add it to your 'Gates Of Dawn' collection while you can.

Review: The historic sole album from Planet Gong, Live Floating Anarchy 1977, captures Daevid Allen and Gilli Smyth with the classic 70's Here & Now lineup during their Floating Anarchy Tour. This project marked Allen's transition from Canterbury Gong to a more prog-punk sound. It was recorded live and features wild, spacey psychedelic jams with chaotic rhythms and the anarchic style of Here & Now. It's a thrilling listen, blending subversive singalongs with musical ties to the punk scene making it an enduring go-to for fans of Daevid Allen, early Gong and space-rock enthusiasts.

Review: It's no wonder the Cardinal Fuzz label that is releasing this record have the eye of providence as their logo as they specialise in sensational garage psych and krautrock with mind expanding qualities. Chicago's experimental space punks Plastic Crimewave Syndicate are a case in point: exceptional in delivering fuzzed up throbbing, pulsing guitar-led wig outs and elegiac breakdowns with an improvised feel. This is a record that's impossible to remain still to. Where vocals come in, drenched in reverb, giving the impression he's singing from the bottom of a well it provides an electrifying lift, but it's equally compelling when they're indulging in belligerently shreddy instrumental passages. This is neo-Krautock that can be ranked up there with the likes of Follakzoid and Acid Mother's Temple.

Review: Outside of jazz-fusion circles, violinist and composer Jean-Luc Ponty is best known for two things: embracing synthesizers and electronic instruments (including electric violin) earlier than his peers, and playing a small but significant role in inspiring some of Detroit techno's earliest innovators. This double disc set rounds up three of the albums that proved most inspirational to electronic musicians. Disc one sports 1987's warm, colourful and mesmerising The Gift of Time - where, fittingly, Ponty's ability to create surprising and intense off-kilter dancefloor workouts was first noticed by adventurous DJs - and 1989's Storytelling, which kicks off with his most famous work: the awe-inspiring 'In The Fast Lane'. Over on disc two, we get 1991's Tchokola, an inspired mix of fusion, Afrobeat and Zouk flavours that has long been a favourite amongst Balearic silverbacks.

Review: 12 years. Twelve years. T-WELVE YEARS! It's been a decade plus two since Porcupine Tree bowed out with a spectacular One Last Job at London's Royal Albert Hall. There are few venues as fitting as that statesman of a concert hall for a band that sound like this. The English troupe have always been about these huge sounds, chords soaring above your head, riffs blazing, while tracks always threatening - and often following through - to veer off the straight and narrow into more experimental prog moods.

Now they're back with a much-anticipated, and long-delayed, comeback record. The question is, then, does it live up to expectations? The answer, thankfully, is yes, and then some. Closure/Continuation brings the crew's sound bang up to date, without forgetting who they are and always have been. It's a thing of beauty, but also thunderous power when it wants to unleash it.

Review: Rockpalast (which translates as Rock Palace) is a German music television show that broadcasts live on German television station Westdeutscher Rundfunk. In 1997 it welcomed Primus to play their own festival and Broadcast Live At Rockpalast Open Air Festival 1997 is a recrding of what went down from the prog rock greats. The American outfit comprised of, oringally, Les Claypool, guitarist Todd Huth and and drummer Tim "Herb" Alexander, dropepd their first album in 1990. Frizzle Fry was critically well received and saw some great underground success which led to interest from major record labels. Plenty of their early tunes appear on this great live recording.

Review: The listener is met with a 70s odyssey of Moog-infused cosmic krautrock and psychedelic baroque on this debut record from The Psychic Circle. A proggy sonic journey - Labyrinth meets Wizards meets Belladonna Of Sadness - this debut record from the band comprised of Tom McDowell, Jack Harris and J.D. is centred on the concept of a lone alchemist living at the top of an everlasting mountain, whose affliction by the curse of the Psychic Circle - a glowing orb that presages whatever his mind desires - ultimately leads to his downfall by way of an unleashing of dark magick across the land. To this tune, our ears are treated to noir, slack swords-and-sorcery prog rock buildups replete with occult chants and apogees, evoking warding spells, oubliettes to cobbled cells, pretties flying off into the night, and skulls doubling up as candelabrums.

Review: Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs of Saint Etienne fame are the diggers behind this new rock assemblage which pays tribute to mid-afternoon set times at lesser-known festivals from years gone (well, the 70s) such as Deeply Vale, Bickershaw, Krumlin, Weeley, and Plumpton. They were just as important to those who attended as the more celebrated likes of Glasto' and this collection shows the sounds were just as good, too. The sounds - from big names liek Deep Purple, Hawkwind and Alan Parker & Alan Hawkshaw to lesser known acts like Jonesy, will appeal to hippies and bikers alike with big riffs, funky drumming and some psyched-out sounds.
