Last Stop On The Underground (4:45)
Happy To Leave (3:32)
Review: Rain Parade's recent EP Last Stop On The Underground marks their notable return to the music scene, coinciding with the release of their first album in nearly forty years, Last Rays of a Dying Sun. Original members Matt Piucci and Steven Roback, who have been collaborating since 1981, continue their legacy of neo-psychedelic rock with this fresh material. The band, co-founded by the Roback brothers and Piucci, made a significant impact in the 1980s Paisley Underground scene with their debut album Emergency Third Rail Power Trip, widely regarded as a classic. Following David Roback's departure, the band's EP Explosions In The Glass Palace in 1984 maintained their high acclaim and has only grown in reputation over time. Reflecting on the creation of the new EP, Sid Griffin of The Long Ryders mentioned their recent tour with the Third Mind, which inspired Rain Parade to produce new material for their European audience. The EP features three new songs, including the title track, which incorporates elements from an older unfinished piece, and a leftover track from their latest album, creating a cohesive four-song collection. The recording process, guided by Jim Hill in familiar Oakland studios, was efficient, showcasing Rain Parade's ability to craft captivating music swiftly.

Happy To Leave
Review: Rain Parade’s Last Stop On The Underground EP marks a significant return for the band, following their long break from the music scene. Known for their role in shaping the Paisley Underground sound in the 1980s, the EP showcases original members Matt Piucci and Steven Roback continuing their signature neo-psychedelic style. The release comes alongside their first full-length album in nearly forty years, Last Rays of a Dying Sun. The EP’s features 'Surprise, surprise' and 'Didn’t know what not to say,' blending the band’s familiar jangly guitars with reflective lyrics. Also included is the title track 'Last stop on the underground' and 'Happy to leave,' which capture a mix of nostalgia and progression. Their 1983 release Emergency Third Rail Power Trip was hailed as one of the standout albums of the Paisley Underground, earning high praise from critics. With this new material, Rain Parade reinforces their place in the psychedelic rock landscape once more.

The Night At The Lagoone (2:30)
Review: The charming slight crackle of a vintage stereo sound suits 60s garage rock best. If these tracks from German beat group The Rippers were scrubbed up too clean and streaming digitally it just wouldn't have the same charm. When you hear the funk-y a-side 'Honesty', with its Doors-esque organ flourishes, on this 7" format it takes you right back to 1968 when it was recorded. And B-side 'The Night At The Lagoone' is garage-psych-rock at its absolute finest. For all its woozy psychedelia, at its core is a strong pop sense that makes them appealing to fans of the Hollies or The Beatles, too. These deep cuts, lifted from an album released that the pioneering British indie label Saga Records originally released, make for a true marvel in even the most experienced crate digger's collection.

Erotica (7")
Cat: MR 7389EP. Rel: 10 Mar 25
Rita - "Erotica" (4:44)
Aguaturbia - "Erotica" (2:50)
Review: The imagination of the Munster label runs unabashed, as the late 1960s French cabaret star Rita and Chilean band Aguaturbia are heard to "team up" on this wonderful 7" slither of eroticism. Both visited their respective localities in the late 60s and early 70s, with Aguaturbia especially concluding an extensive tour across Europe with an incensing performative finale in France. They also happened to each name one of their own best songs 'Erotica'. Though they never met or really formally collaborated, this new record indulges the fantasy of what it may have been like to work together, had their shoulders been hit with golden arrows. An imaginary sexploitation film soundtrack, Rita's 'Erotica' rises to the hyperventilated brim, her delighted cries building to shaky, sighing contractions, while Aguaturbia's does remarkably similar with a brasher, dust-storming fuzz-guitar melee set to fainter but still audible groans.

Only Good For Conversation (2:23)
Review: Dynamite Cuts presents the timeless classic 'Sugar Man' by Sixto Rodriguez on a 7" vinyl. Originally released on Sussex Records, this track features a stellar lineup of musicians including Bob Babbitt on bass and Dennis Coffey on guitar, with Gordon Staples arranging the stunning strings and Mike Theodore producing. The reissue uses the original white sleeve design instead of the South African issue with a black sleeve. On Side-2, 'Only Good for Conversation,' is another standout track from Rodriguez's LP, offering a heavy groove with a bass drum loop reminiscent of Eugene McDaniels. This release is a chance to own a piece of music history at a more accessible price point than the now extremely pricey original 70s issue.

Green Ray (3:45)
Review: The latest single from Finnish indie label Timmion Records is 'Souvenir' by The Rosettes, fronted by vocalist Tytti Roto. This sombre, mellow 70s-flavoured ballad is delivered with raw emotion, lacking in sophistication but rich in depth, reflecting on the world's dangerous and harmful conditions. Timmion Records introduces new talent with The Rosettes' 7" vinyl single, blending soul and jazz with smooth pop sensibility. Dubbed the 'Khruangbin of the North', The Rosettes bring a fresh cinematic perspective to contemporary soul music. On Side-1 'Souvenir' offers a deep soul experience showcasing Tytti Roto's emotive storytelling and the band's melodic depth. The Side-2, 'Green Ray,' delivers a psychedelic soul groover with a funky backbeat, evoking a 1960s vibe. Drawing inspiration from Cymande and Isaac Hayes, The Rosettes infuse their sound with experimental elements while keeping it catchy and accessible.

Review: Considered to be Australia's first and most influential punk band and the country's answer to 'Kick Out The Jams' hitmakers MC5 and The Stooges, Radio Birdman have bucked the trend and shown that it's not quantity but quality that matters. Living Eyes, recorded in 1978 in Rockfield Studios in Wales, is the band's second studio album, the last recorded by the band before they split and easily one of the best punk records you can get. They've reformed since but released only more album since then and that was released in 2006. Ultimately, it's the brief first era truly that's built their reputation. And while a lot of groups remix and remaster records even though they've had an official master previously, this remix version of Radio Birdman was born out of the band wanting to finish the job properly. The first release in 1981 came when the band weren't together so they didn't get an official master until 1994 when they put out a CD. For the first time, the 1994 version is available on vinyl and it's the ultimate way to hear Radio Birdman.

Review: Known for his raw authenticity, Hot Water Music co-frontman Ragan embraces a dynamic blend of genres on this new collection. The album's lead single, 'Wild In Our Ways', showcases Ragan's signature gravelly voice alongside harder-hitting Americana-infused rock, marking a shift from his usual folk sound. The track's anthemic spirit captures themes of survival and resilience, with lyrics that rally behind the underdog. Ragan's commitment to honesty and musical exploration shines throughout Love and Lore, which was delayed due to the pandemic and his family commitments. Conceptualised in 2016, it eventually came together in early 2023. Songs like 'Echo the Halls', also featured on the album, continue this bold sonic evolution and Ragan's approach remains rooted in integrity and a willingness to stretch beyond boundaries. For fans of both his punk and solo work, Love and Lore promises to be a bold, heartfelt release, with his unmistakable warmth and conviction at its core.

Review: Grapefruit is set to release "Rain: Tomorrow Never Comes: The NYC Sessions 1967-1968," a lost Psychedelic Pop gem from the Anglo-American trio formed post-Lomax Alliance. Featuring a Beatles-meets-West-Coast sound, this album was recorded with the help of Young Rascals engineer Chris Huston but never secured a recording contract. Despite performing at iconic venues like the Whisky a Go-Go and the Fillmore, the band disbanded after a brief stint as The Gypsy Wizards Band. This first-ever issue includes original tracks and six previously unreleased songs. With vintage handbills, posters, and photos by Linda Eastman, this release is a great discovery for fans of melodic West Coast Psychedelic Pop.

Review: The Ramones had long reshaped the world of music in their beautifully twisted image by the time they recorded this, their second live album, in Spain in 1991. But the New York punks were seemingly addicted to playing live, touring relentlessly throughout the 80s and 90s, and their tightly drilled act is at fever pitch here, careering through an incredible 32 'blink and you'll miss them' tracks across four sides of vinyl. A handful of covers - there's a blistering version of The Trashmen's early rock 'n' roll stormer 'Surfin' Bird', for instance - nestle alongside timeless originals such as 'I Wanna Be Sedated', 'Beat On The Brat' and 'Sheena Is A Punk Rocker', with a healthy selection of deeper cuts from the late 80s here too. Top mayhem.

Review: Known for being one of the most tumultuous projects of the entire Ramones catalogue, 1986's Animal Boy came at an all-time low in terms of camaraderie and communication within the band. Following on from the well-received back to basics approach of Too Tough To Die, the internal bickering and uncertainty as to where to chart their next sonic course would ultimately lead to disinterested and detached contributions from their most vocal of writers with neither Joey Ramone nor guitarist Johnny able to creatively agree on even a single track. Picking up the slack was bassist Dee Dee and drummer Richie, who took it upon themselves to salvage the sessions, leading to a somewhat sporadic concoction that was lambasted upon initial release due to the clear lack of a cohesive direction. With time salving all wounds, however, the record now garners its own fond reappraisal for its synth-laden new wave experimentations, while lyrically delving into some of their most personal and political subjects to date, even sometimes simultaneously such as on the standout cut, 'My Brain Is Hanging Upside Down (Bonzo Goes to Bitburg)', which takes central aim at one Ronald Reagan, and caused disagreement within the band due to individual stances on the subject matter. An often misunderstood ninth entry, Animal Boy deserves all the flowers it has been rewarded in retrospect.

Review: Are The Ramones now best known for being on t-shirts worn by people who have never heard the band? Maybe. But either way, Too Tough To Die, which was released 40 years ago, is often seen as a return to form. Really, it deserves a more radical categorisation. Released in the mid-1980s, the album felt out of step with the era, not in a negative way, but in how it captured the contradictions of its time. Made without a clear direction, its incongruity became its defining feature. As Joey Ramone noted in a 1988 interview, "Around '84, the world was changing drastically... Things were getting scary. So, our songs started changing." This shift in tone marked a new chapter in their musical evolution.

Review: This Ramones album - one of their very, very many - is packed with relentless guitar energy and a proud punk ethos. Originally released in 1987, it captures their raw spirit and is packed with gritty rock licks and infectious melodies. Featuring standout tracks like the opener 'I Wanna Live' and the guttural vocal bite of 'Garden of Serenity' it showcases the band's evolution while staying true to their signature sound, during what was a pivotal moment in the US punks' lengthy career, a decade or so on from their explosive arrival.

Review: Originally released in 1978, Road To Ruin would serve as the fourth full-length from leather jacket-clad punk pioneers The Ramones. While a rejected, mitigated flop upon release due to the band's swing for the radio fences (or airwaves) complete with sonic elements at the time alien to the punkosphere such as acoustic guitars, lead guitar solos and 60s pop ballads, in the near five decades since release, the project has been reevaluated as a bold successor to 1977's iconic Rocket To Russia (although that album did place 50 places ahead on the Billboard 200 at the time of release). Marking (no pun intended) their first effort to feature drummer Marky Ramone, who replaced Tommy Ramone after his departure due to the inability to keep up with the rigors of touring and lack of residuals from their previous record; the album's glossy, clean production has slowly morphed from malaise to praise over the ensuing decades, while offering up some of their most timeless and essential bangers including 'Needles & Pins' and 'I Wanna Be Sedated' (which if Spotify metrics are anything to go by, is the band's most popular song after, of course, 'Blitzkrieg Bop').

Review: Originally released in 1983, Subterranean Jungle would serve as the seventh full-length LP from the brothers Ramone, whilst marking their return to the well of punk rock bangers following the new wave and pop experiments of their two preceding albums End Of The Century (1980) and Pleasant Dreams (1981). Written and recorded during a severely tumultuous time in the band's tenure with both Joey and Marky battling alcohol addiction while Dee Dee was undergoing treatment for his cocaine habit, the resulting tension and resentment to the previously overbearing control of Joey on their previous output, led to a paired down vision with focus solely placed on prioritising grade A punk rock like only the Ramones know how. Their first album to not singularly feature Joey on lead vocals with Dee Dee taking centre stage on 'Timebomb' whilst also handling the bridge on 'Outsider', the more collaborative ethos of the project would, yet again, nearly implode the band with Marky being ousted before recording had even ceased (not playing drums on a Ramones record again until 1989's Brain Drain).
