Review: Confidence Man's third album, 3AM (LA LA LA), captures the wild energy of London's club scene and the 90s rave culture, blending euphoric dance beats with a darker undercurrent. Written during late-night studio sessions, the album pulses with breakbeat, trance, and techno influences, pushing their sound into bolder, more intense territory. Tracks like 'I Can't Lose You' and 'So Whay' hit with fierce, rave-ready energy, while vocalist Janet Planet's playful lyrics echo the spontaneity of a night out. The group's penchant for theatricality and fun comes alive in their live shows, full of synchronised dance moves and chaotic party vibes. Review: The fully mixed version of Confidence Man's debut Fabric mix record is here on CD. In contrast to the selectors' LP version - also sold by us - this full version is a seamless, singular slab of optical laser-read musical licence, espousing the central vibe-theme of Confidence Man's message: have confidence. Well, except for want of a receiving ear, we find ourselves tentatively able to confide in Confidence Man's Fabric mix ("better than therapy" joke happily dodged) as a substitution in the meantime; for it too shows us that real, authentic, and boundless confidence can, believably, indeed, be found in bouncy dance exclusives available on CD only. Among these are Patrick Prins' kitsch chipmunk banger 'Fiesta Conga' and Cygnus X's steezy-cheesy trance stutterer 'Positron'03'. With both many a throwback and a present promo in tow, Confidence Man dice up and dole out a small slice of their huge stash of their patented auricular confidence dust.

Review: Freestyle Records presents reissued material by Contact-U, the electro boogie project by Rick de Jongh and Andy Sojka. Originally released via their Challenge imprint, which would quickly begin to focus on the emerging sounds of Hi-NRG and electro at the time, this material is taken from the duo's three EPs released between 1982 - 1984.. Many recognise these tracks as some of the greatest electro-funk sounds of all time; whether it's the electric boogaloo of 'Ecuador' taken from their first EP of the same name, the body rockin' beats of 'Dancing Inner Space' or the robotic p-funk of 'Break It Up' - this really is foundational UK dance music.

Review: Hollie Cook's 2022 album Happy Hour was widely hailed as a standout entry in the UK singer's accomplished career to date, and now she's doubled down on her dub instincts by going back in with producer Ben McKone for a proper echo chamber revision which lets different ingredients in the album shine in a whole new, delay-soaked light. As well as stripping down some of the tracks and reworking the fundamentals, there's also space for some new ingredients from Rosie Turton on 'Golden Dub', Josh Skints and Jah9 on 'Kush Dub' and Kiko Bun on 'Dubbing On'.

Review: This is ex-Teardrop Explodes frontman and cult hero Julian Cope's third record in as many years - he's operating at the speed that a lot of 60s/70s psychedelia artists that he was inspired by were and, in turn, making everyone else look a bit lazy. As a songwriter his satirical and absurdist sense of humour shines through; he makes you laugh as often as he makes you want to tap your foot and sing-a-long. And the uniqueness of his personality shines through with countless witty lines. A case in point is the brilliant "They ruined my Subbuteo and made their escape / Four Jehovah's in a Volvo estate", which is talk/sung over a motorik beat replete with mind-bending mellotron. Elsewhere, the bedroom-glam rock album opener 'Too Freud To Rock'n'Roll/Too Jung To Die' is a brilliant takedown of someone who's seemingly wound him up on the internet. With tunes this good, long may the rebirth of Cope continue.

Lamoreaux and one that takes the form of a profound exploration of personal experiences and emotions using sound to delve into philosophical themes of being and existence. The album's four carefully crafted tracks transform abstract metaphysical inquiries into tangible auditory experiences that make for a meditative journey. It is quiet and patient yet captivating in its artistry and is exactly the sort of immersive ambient that makes a lasting impression.

Review: Cosey Fanni Tutti is one of the great treasures of UK synth and industrial music, and it's no stretch to consider her legacy as a continuation of the groundbreaking work of Delia Derbyshire. As such, she was a natural choice to compose a soundtrack to Caroline Catz's BBC4 docu-drama Delia Derbyshire: The Myths and the Legendary Tapes. As Tutti explains, she extensively researched Derbyshire's archives of recordings, compositional notes and techniques and intertwined them with her own practices to create a perfect fusion, or as she puts it, an alliance of our sensibilities. If you take synth music seriously, this release is nigh-on essential listening.

Review: Manchester indie icons The Courteeners - second only to Oasis in their home city - treated fans to a retrospective promo run in 2023 after releasing the 15th anniversary edition of the album that made them stars: St. Jude. And they landed their first number one in the process. Riding off the back of that success, Liam Fray and co. have an album of all new songs for 2024 and have done it in tandem with the aid of a new generation of indie risers and more established names. This, their seventh studio album, is easily their most collaborative work to-date. Stone Roses-esque Aussies the DMA's, hotly-tipped indie pop singer Pixey, The Coral-backed singer Brooke Coombe were handpicked to be featured artists, while the likes of The Coral's Ian and James Skelly and Blossoms' bassist Charlie Salt are on the record too. One of The Courteeners biggest strengths is their ear for a hook that sticks and in this respect listeners to the new album won't be disappointed. The single 'Solitude On The Night Bus' is a major case in point. It will have you whistling it long after it's stopped playing. Elsewhere, 'The Beginning Of The End' is euphoric with soaring vocals and lush instrumental arrangements. Perhaps they've taken after the Coral in doing so but the introduction of steadier tempos and their nods to Phil Spector's wall of sound technique is something they wear well. Their best since St. Jude.
