BFTT - "Public/Private"
Lack - "Absent"
Chekov - "Celeste"
Howes - "Untitled"
Review: Cong Burn made a mighty splash with its first release, clearly flaunting the kind of wares you'd expect to hear from Livity Sound alumni or other such esteemed techno renegades. The second installment is no slouch either, featuring a new cast of crooked creators offering up their wares for the modern mutant dancefloor. BFTT has a weighty low end thrum powering "Public/Private", while Lack takes things in a scuffed and nimble direction. Chekov pushes out into more experimental pastures with the broken beats and displaced sound design of "Celeste" and Howes creates a wonderful strain of mystical deep house for darkened souls. Each one of these tracks is loaded with flair and personality, yards ahead of your average generic knock offs and presenting something with real merit to the convoluted world of dance music.

Hype Williams - "Hype Williams Meets Shangaan Electro" (version)
Review: Honest Jons are our undisputed favourites as far as bringing forth new and unexpected projects goes. One such project is their glorious string of releases which saw several contemporary electronic producers re-interpret the South African electro deluge of Shangaan Electro, a near 10 piece band consisting of wild dancers, freaky masks and ludicrously memorable anthems. This release features the experimental duo of Demdike Stare and the mysterious but wonderful pair that is Hype Williams. Demdike's remix is a sparse and sub-aqueous drone filtered through irregular bongos and melting swirls of voices, whilst the "version" pretty much reduces those already scarce drums to mere memories. Over on the flip, Hype Williams create a sublimely majestic rhythm, those vocals swaying so darn effortlessly over the rugged drum kit pouncing lazily beneath it. Their version injects a severely chopped slice of bass and concentrates primarily on the percussion - mounds of delays and reverbs present in true HW fashion.

Funk Do Sindicalismo (5:08)
Agronomia Setorial (5:38)
Review: Ever a label to confound expectations, DC's Future Times return with their first transmission of 2015 and lay down some truly mind bending material from Japa Habilidoso. Part of the 40% Foda/Maneirissimo crew out of Rio De Janeiro, Japa Habilidoso's music thus far has been restricted to some low key digital and CDr releases and it's clear from these two cuts his imagination is equalled only by his intensity. Future Times proudly claim this 12" to be the "most punk shit" they've put out and it is hard to disagree. In full flight, "Funk Do Sindicalismo" is a relentless monster, a free jazz take on techno, a collage of percussive rhythms that needs to be deployed when a dancefloor is ready to lose its mind. "Agronomia Setorial" is no less special, with a wonderful piano loop cascading in and out of focus over some drunken drums and marauding stabs. More please Japa.

Review: Eclectic Belgian label Meakusma serve up more strange delights that they're fast becoming known for. Georgia are Brian Close and Justin Tripp who work out of their studio in Chinatown, NYC. They released the album Like Comments earlier this year and Like Comment Comments, naturally, is the remix-driven accompaniment. There are some truly inventive takes featured here by a stellar cast. DFA's Bryce Hackford serves up a nice deep house revision of "Nu Way Heat", NYC's RVNG INT'L deliver a harsh and hard hitting digi dub chugger on the remix of "Abstrackt High" plus two new tracks by Georgia themselves. "Bridge 1" and "Bridge 2" continue on with their oddball cinematic vibes as heard on the album and perfect for those chill out moments.

Blue Dragon (Gatekeeper remix) (3:19)
Review: There is little known about Haf Haf, the latest operator to sidle up to Danse Noire following turns from IVVVO and label boss Aisha Devi. The shadowy concern was last seen rocking up on Gang Of Ducks in 2014 with the eight-track Notch tape, and this time around there is a more concise three track offering to delve into backed up with a remix from Gatekeeper. Compared to the lo-fi rumblings of so many contemporaries, Haf Haf keeps a high level of digital processing at the heart of the music, even if the end result is still grubby and unsettling. "Blue Dragon" in particular does a fine job of marrying glossy melodic flurries with arrhythmic interference that would send the wrong kind of person crazy. For those who like the disorientation of bizarre sound design with a musical twist, this release comes highly recommended.

Review: Gravitational 003 features two spaced out ambient cuts from Tbilisi based sound artist Hanker. The highly advanced and introspective A side jams "Sail Over The Eastern Horizon" and "Waxing Gibbous" are a must for all sci-fi soundtrack enthusiasts out there. Awash in trippy modular synth textures and emotive analogue strings and altogether creating a soulful, retro-futurist bliss to travel without moving. Comes with a stellar Blind Observatory treatment on the flip side, which will take you deep into the stratosphere on his finely tuned hypnotic techno epic. Comes with a printed 21x21cm artwork.

Review: After a brief spell moonlighting on the Argot label, the producer known simply as Gunnar Haslam returns to the LIES label where he made his debut last year with what is presumably the first in another deluge of releases from Ron Morelli's label. If you were one of the many caught up in the charms of Mimesiak, Gunnar Haslam's LP for LIES, you will find yourself immediately swept up by the productions on Porte Maillot which could feasibly have come from the same recording sessions. Lead track "Feuve" wastes little time in swooping through a heavily atmospheric widescreen soundscape with low rumbling percussion propelling the production forth. Meanwhile, "Laghi Sotterranei" and "Archive" both sound like Haslam has been inspired by that excellent KWC 92 LP to dabble in music for an imaginary soundtrack.

Foxy
One Take Dub No Edit
Review: As 2014 has rolled on, Powell's Diagonal label has really gathered a sense of momentum and direction with its succession of releases. With the Juno office stereo still in recovery from the most excellent Shit & Shine LP Powder Horn, this new double pronged noise sermon from the masterful Russell Haswell only adds to their impressive year. Comprised of two 10-minute tracks, Double A is at times as bracing as anything else from the Haswell canon, with the scratched, spasmodic improvised sonics of lead track "Foxy" potentially capable of scaring Richard D James back into hiding. "One Take Dub No Edit" is described by Diagonal as a "flashback to a vital time when futurist Latin freestyle and industrial funk were the dancer's choice" and is perhaps the closest concession to the dancefloor from Haswell in some time. Killer artwork too!

Review: The Gravity Graffiti label is fast establishing itself as an outpost for uncompromisingly strange records, and that's just fine with us. After the wonderful slouching boogie of the Soichi Terada / Whodamanny split 12", this time they've called upon none-stranger Japanese maverick Yoshinori Hayashi to turn out an A side that veers from free jazz esoterics to the best kind of mutant rave throwback imaginable. On the flip side DB.Source gets into a delightful tropical melee on "Anapo" before "Ciane (GG Records Trance Mix)" sends the release off into an exotic wilderness. This is the kind of record you wouldn't be able to imagine before you heard it, making it a perfect addition to the Gravity Graffiti canon.

How Can You Hide From What Never Goes Away?
On High In Translucent Tomorrows
Review: It's surprising to think that it was back in 2011 that Massimiliano Vianello first emerged on Delsin with his debut EP Too Many Ghosts, but now the Italian producer is finally following up on the promise of that first EP with another selection of psychedelically-tinged house and techno for Meda Fury. It's pleasing to note that his sound hasn't been tempered in the passing of time, with a rich tapestry of sounds feeding into his starry-eyed productions from exotic samples to distant synths, loping drum machines to mangled instruments. "Get Mezcla" represents the more direct offering with its sumptuous flute lines and rolling groove but even there you can find your mind wandering into a haze of swirling noise and cooing voices.

Review: Healing Force Project, the pseudonym of choice for Italian producer Antonio Marini, has previously been described on Juno as "one of techno's most underrated producers". It's a fairly accurate description, given his relative lack of commercial success in comparison to the quality of the material he's released on Berceuse Heroique, Eclipse Music and Eerie. Here he abandons his dancefloor pretensions for a thrillingly odd, occasionally dreamy and always enthralling trip into experimental territory. There's much to admire, from the freestyle electronic jazz of "Ripple Tank" and ambient house shuffle of "Pythagorean Transcriptions", to the otherworldly electro of "Point of Oscillation" and hazy, lopsided electronica of "Molecular Horizon".

Review: Helm's release from last year, World In Action, was one of our top picks from Will Bankhead's TTT store, and still deserves to be picked if you missed it the first time round. As such, it's no surprise that Helm himself has wanted to relaunch the EP, as a remix affair, on his own excellent Alter imprint. Truth be told, there is so much more to be said in these tunes, thanks to their loose and ambiguous properties, and it's safe to say that he's picked exactly the right group of artists to help him elevate them to the next level. Parris, Low Jack, Laurel Halo, Beneath, and Sky H1 land on Helm's originals with grievous intentions, each offering a visible shade of their own styles and takes on the enlarged techno domain - a detuned, demassed, and utterly destroyed collection of sounds. Big.

Review: Oh yes. You know that feeling when a record you've been desperately hunting for years lands on your lap courtesy of an independent reissue label? Well, Finders Keepers have given us just that. Pierre Henry's devious soundtrack to Henry Decoin's 1962 horror flick "Malefices" was way ahead of its time then and still sounds otherworldly now, where intricate moulds of tape manipulation meet early modulations and electronic trickery - a certified winner for anyone into experimental electronics but also a must to any dedicated record collector. It's one of those special ones, people..!

Pretty Daddy
Review: After several years of pushing the boundaries of experimentation within music, Matthew Herbert pulled a curveball few were expecting when he elected to return to his house music roots and continue the series of Parts 12" releases issued under his surname as far back as the mid '90s. Part 6 was a sublime way to mark this return (especially "My DJ") and Herbert looks to be inspired as this Part 7 12" feels every bit as good. Lead track "Bumps" sees Herbert working with Rahel Debebe, vocalist for Accident act Hejira, and the results have a similar charm to some of Michachu's early material though a bit more polished, a bit less ramshackle. "Sucker" is a killer DJ tool that will confuse people in the best way possible, whilst "Get Strong" is a typically idiosyncratic Herbert production with very few elements utilised expertly. Closing track "Pretty Daddy" sounds like old Roots Manuva track "Son Of The Soil" remixed by Jamal Moss (this is a good thing).

Her Face
Review: Matthew Herbert's return to the dancefloor, via the re-launched Part series (volume one landed way back in 1995, amazingly), has been one of the good news stories of 2014. Part 8 is the third instalment in the long-running series this year, and features another quartet of wonky, left-of-centre house cuts in his inimitable style. Naturally, there's much to admire, from the piano jazz-meets-outsider house swing of "Remember Ken" and the glitch-funk of "Ticket", to the acoustic-goes-electronic pulse of "Her Face". Arguably best of all, though, is "The Wrong Place", which boasts many of Herbert's aural trademarks - think cut-up vocal edits, tipsy electronics and a delightfully odd, low-slung groove.

Grab The Bottle
Review: What can we say about Matthew Herbert? Well, for starters, he's one of the most eclectic artists to have blossomed from the UK house and techno scene. In fact, his sound is ever-so-difficult to pin down and categorise. Part 6, the latest four-tracker to surface on his own Accidental imprint, is Herbert at his most daring, where lo-fi beats and gnarly, whacked-out techno feature on the same 12". The glitchy, processed female vocals featuring on "Manny" are so far away from the minimalistica of "My DJ", that it's hard to tell what exactly goes on inside Herbert's mind. What we can tell, however, is that he's on top form and once again reaffirming his status as one of the most creative minds in dance music.

Review: Last spotted moonlighting on the 21st release from the like-minded Workshop label, Herron returns to the meandyou fray with The Night Garden. The five track 12" is both Herron's full debut and the first dedicated artist record from meandyou after two superb split releases, and you get the sense the producer has really grasped the chance to spread his wings. Three of the tracks here are full-length excursions into ambiguous house music that continues the murky aesthetic that hovers around the work of meandyou. as a whole. The other two tracks represent shorter diversions into ambience and experimentation that take the tense atmospherics away from direct beat constructions. It's quite a confident record from Herron with "Force of Habit" a highlight.

His run of fine releases continues here with How To Mind Your Own, a six track EP for Dublin's All City operation which doesn't so much as defy easy genre categorisation, it laughs in the face of such futile gestures. Some may call it deep house but really Herva has crafted some mutant brands of the genre where individual tracks contain more ideas and rhythmic deviations than you are likely to hear in whole 12"s from many other artists. Totally crazy and totally refreshing.

Review: Overseen by London producer PhOtOmachine (with some assistance from Ninja Tune) the Technicolour label has been on sublime form of late, with some rare Kutmah material up their with this year's best 12" releases. This latest release is quite the statement too, with mathematics boss Jamal Moss on board for two heavy duty cuts presented on heavyweight wax. It's timed well too, with Planet Mu having just issued a Hieroglyphic Being primer drawing from a decades worth of material. Fans of Hieroglyphic Being old and new will find much to appreciate in The Fourth Dimensions Of A Nubian Mystic, with the glistening 11 minute cosmos of "Fourth Dimension" complemented well by the jack hammer B Side "Start Time."

The Man With The Red Rhythm
The Ischiadic Nerve
Review: Jamal Moss steps up to the Alter stable with some of his masterful Chicago-via-outer-space house music, kicking off with the subtle rise and fall of the title track which works off a dizzying array of interlocking melodies to create a truly intergalactic synthesiser journey. "The Man With The Red Rhythm" is a more jagged affair, maximizing on cowbell hits and a delirious clashing of harmonies between organ notes, rubbery bass swells, and all manner of sonic mess flung at the canvas and falling into a mad jack all by itself. "The Ischiadic Nerve" deals more in a grotty, industrial sound palette wielded to a tough techno purpose. The drum pattern is unforgiving, the synths drifting like aimless wraiths, the intensity never letting up. It's exactly what you went when signing up for the Jamal Moss experience.

Tache Floue De L'amour De Folie Interminable
Review: If you need any proof that Jamal Moss is currently at his busiest then check this weeks release schedules and you'll find this is the third 12" blessed with the unique touch of the Mathematics boss man. This record for the fledgling Norwegian label Modelhart features cuts from the slightly daunting Moss archives under his universally recognisable alias Hieroglyphic Being; the A Side sees the uncredited 9th Planet (another Moss alias?) tackle "A Plutonian Love Affair" which originally featured on 2010's The Sun Man Speaks, one of the countless CDrs Moss releases with little prior notice. 9th Planet's rework extends the track and the fractured, warbling chimes and organs shimmer with a beautiful sense of incandescence. "Tache Floue De L'Amour Folie Interminable" occupies the B Side, lifted from Moss's Welcome 2 The Beating Hearts Social Club CDr of last year and leaves a haunted feeling on the listener with thrusting percussion reminiscent of Squarepusher's "Red Hot Car" swamped in a land of static.

Review: Born out of a collaborative jam after Freerotation 2012, The High On Wye Quintet finds Move D, Juju & Jordash, Soulphiction and Steevio merging their considerable range of hardware to conjure up three pieces of adventurous techno that moves in the outer fringes of electronic music. "Cedar of Lebanon / Spongy Tree" spreads out across the A side in a slowly unfurling bliss-out of undulating synth lines and a gentle skipping rhythm woven for the quintessential back room bliss-out. "Nant Feinion" has sharper edges to it, even if the searching nature of the ring-modulated lines still remain firmly in the deeper end of the techno spectrum. "No Bones Jones" rounds the EP off in a multi-faceted drift of ambient refinement, letting languid guitars ring out into swelling pads for the perfect mellow finishing move to a sterling EP.

Review: Danny Passarella kick started his eponymous label last year by collaborating with Perc Trax boss Ali Wells, and this second release sees him working with another veteran of UK techno in Oliver Ho. Fresh off supplying Cititrax with his debut LP as Broken English Club, Ho's work alongside Passarella sees the pair embark on "an exploration of gender and growth, moving between the superficially binary genders, creating new identities through this process." The track titles, "Male", "Female", "Back" and "Forth", back up this notion, while the sounds themselves exist in something of a soundtrack-indebted space removed from the more direct output both artists can be known for.
