Waterfallin' (Gilles Peterson remix) (4:16)
Waterfallin' (Gilles Peterson unreleased instrumental remix) (4:16)
Review: Rising Canadian guitar dexter Bobby Bazini presents the 7" vinyl edition of one of his latest singles, 'Waterfallin'', which features none other than Gilles Peterson on an even rarer remix. With source material from one of five of Bazini's Spanish guitar debuts - 'Waterfallin'' having emerged from the affective foams and mistings-up of a friend, Connor, whose performance in front of him on the nylon guitar conjured images of a waterfall in Bazini's head - Peterson brings a folktronic verve to Bazini's originally vintage, Latin disco vision, dousing it in evermore pipe reverb as if to liken it to a steep cataract's rapids.

Review: Endlessness is a deep dive into the cycle of existence. The 45-minute album delicately spans ten tracks guided by a continuous arpeggio that plays throughout, crafting an expansive, mesmerising celebration of life cycles and rebirth. Following Sinephro's critically acclaimed 2021 debut album Space 1.8, Endlessness further elevates her transcendent, multi-dimensional compositional practice, beautifully morphing jazz, orchestral, and electronic music. Through a decalogue of "continuums", a fittingly continual, through-compositional wonderwork is designed and laid to recording, channelling a dignified, spacefaring mood of nobility, as though it were of divine extraterrestrial providence.

Stanway's Revenge (Exclusive 45 edit)
Plain Song
Review: Mukatsuku is hurtling towards its 100th release but ahead of that comes another vital and hand-numbered 7'' featuring a brace of tunes taken from the Resolution album from back in 2003 by Sidewinder aka Reading-born Glasgow resident Alan Bryden. 'Stanway's Revenge' you might recognise from Groove Armada's Back To Mine compilation and here, in edited form, it is as lush as seductive as ever with the smoochy horns and gentle grooves. On the flip, 'Plain Song' has late-night chords making a sombre vibe while muted trumpet, organic percussion and classy strings all embellish the mood.

Away (5:04)
Gro (4:31)
Review: Jazz N Palms' Soul 02 offers two tracks of infectious soul music. 'Away' on Side-1 is a smooth r&b track with a pop-friendly appeal and a soulful touch. The classy singing performance evokes vibes of northern soul and nu-soul, making it a great choice to end the night on a high note. On Side-2, 'Gro' delivers a classic 70s soulful guitar sound infused with blues elements. This instrumental track has a summery feel, perfect for the beach, and features a touch of Latin flavour that adds to its charm. Overall, Soul 02 is a well-crafted release that showcases Jazz N Palms' ability to create soulful and memorable music.

Eddie Russ - "Zaius" (7:22)
Incognito - "Zaius" (7:24)
Review: Last year, the Expansions label kicked off a wonderfully intriguing 10" series featuring classics from soul music's rich canon complemented by contemporary cover versions and so far it's seen Blue Note troupe Quasimode tee off against Johnny Hammond and Bembe Segue challenge Norman Connors. A third edition duly arrives and hints Expansions are really enjoying the creative challenge the concept allows them with the jazz funk classic "Zaius" from Eddie Russ joined by a cover from the celebrated UK funk veterans Incognito. Originally appearing on the 1976 LP See The Light, "Zaius" is a blinding example of why Russ is described a master of the keyboard and it's complemented well by Incognito's B Side cover which appears on vinyl for the first time. Don't sleep!

Review: Dance, No One's Watching is a joyous celebration of the unifying power of dance. Written during Ezra Collective's world tour in 2023, which also saw them become the first jazz act to win the Mercury Prize, this album is full of vibrant energy, a complete sonic journey through a night out in the city, this album succeeds from the opening anticipation to the dawn's quiet conclusion. Recorded at Abbey Road Studios amidst a live communal celebration, Dance, No One's Watching resonates with love, music, and the infectious spirit of dancing. The band's dynamic compositions and rhythmic power are showcased in every track, making it a powerful addition to contemporary British music. The Deluxe 2 LP set on black vinyl, housed in a gatefold jacket with exclusive artwork and a fold-out poster, makes this limited edition the copy to have. What You Gonna Say (4:23)
Review: Shokazulu's Vector Smector on 2000 Black is a compelling 7" release that blends nu-jazz and electronic rhythms. The title track, 'Vector Smector,' offers a smooth groove with a classy piano solo that weaves through a polished electronic rhythm section. It's a delightful fusion that balances sophistication with a laid-back vibe. On Side-2 ,'What You Gonna Say,' introduces a funky edge, incorporating crowd noise for added atmosphere. The spacey keyboard work enhances the track's immersive quality, creating a dynamic and engaging listening experience. Despite its brief runtime, this 7" record delivers a powerful punch, showcasing Shokazulu's adeptness at blending genres and creating memorable, groove-laden music.

Review: One year on from making history as the first ever jazz band to be awarded the Mercury Prize, Ezra Collective are continuing to pump out their sensational, unique blend of jazz, roots, afrobeat and calypso. 'Dance No One's Watching' is the highly anticipated follow-up to the aforementioned award-winning 'Where I'm Meant to Be'. Set to release in September, the two singles 'God Gave Me Feet For Dancing' and 'Ajala' set the bar high. The prior is a jazzy, drum-led groove backing the buttery smooth Yazmin Lacey, a name to watch in the soul scene (famously she was scouted after being persuaded to sing on a drunken night out.) The track is a sunny interpolation of Cy Grant's 'Feeling Good' (though let's face it, Nina Simone truly made that record) with a quintessential British soul sound that brings to mind the stylings of Greentea Peng, early Jorja Smith work etc. To boil it down to 'easy listening' would feel reductive but, my God, it's easy on the ears for sure. Single number two, 'Ajala' is quite a stark contrast. Incorporating the hectic feeling of bebop classics, it's a blaring and fast-paced brass session with some great high-tempo percussive afrobeat. Taking its name from the Yoruba slang for fidgety, derived from the Nigerian journalist who one day decided to travel the world on a moped, the track does just that: it begs you to get up and move. If these two tracks are anything to go by, the world is set for a future award winner this Autumn.

Review: Romero Bros deliver a vibrant double-feature with Samba De Flora Parts 1 & 2, a limited 7" release on Echo Chamber Recordings. This dynamic single ventures into broken beat and nu jazz territories with flair. Side-1 presents 'Samba De Flora' (part 1), a lively track characterised by its tribal rhythms, prominent piano lines, and infectious Latin house influences. This reminds us a lot of Ian Pooley's energetic style from the Since Then album. Side-2 features 'Samba De Flora' (part 2), offering a more subdued take. This version highlights instrumental elements with a refined approach, creating a nuanced soundscape that complements its energetic counterpart. Both versions make this a versatile and enjoyable little 7".

Review: Celebrated composer, producer, techno talent and ambient craftsman John Beltran is a real Detroit don and now he is back on one of the city's own labels, Motor City Wine, with Volume 4 of Back To Bahia on 7". This one finds him going even deeper than before, starting with 'Laguna', which will soon uplift you with its Afro-Brazilian drums and live bass from James Simonson next to lush keys. 'Just Beyond The Sun' then gets fully Balearic with its mix of sultry trumpet, shuffling and Latin-tinged rhythms and wispy cosmic chords. A real delight.

Bill's Valence Street Jam (4:01)
Review: Yuki Kanesaka returns with a delicious uptempo remix-cover of Herbie Hancock's thoroughgoing jazz patent, 'Watermelon Man'. In respectful contrast to Hancock's original piece, Kanesaka deploys a to-the-letter rendition of the original's opening Hindewhu whistle hoot - also heard on the mashup B-side - and keeps up Hancock's intended 'mathematical balance' with a nonetheless meatier, dance-ready EQ balance. Legend has it that this was Hancock's first ever song to be composed with commercial success in mind; we're not surprised at its continued proliferation, appreciation and reproduction across the globe - and now in Japan, no less.

Review: The Mercury Prize-winning British jazz group returns this September with the greatly anticipated follow-up to the award-winning 'Where I'm Meant to Be'. The first jazz group ever to win the prestigious accolade, their unique blend of jazz, calypso, afrobeat and roots has carried over into the two singles 'God Gave Me Feet For Dancing' and 'Ajala'.The former features up-and-coming star Yazmin Lacey, whose sudden scouting has made her a necessary one to watch in the British soul scene. Interpolating Nina Simones's 1965 classic 'Feeling Good', the track proposes the group's manifesto of dancing not just as an activity confined to the club, but as a God-given ability - an act of spirituality and community. 'Ajala', by contrast, is a fast-paced afrobeat-cum-bebop jam named after the Yoruba slang for being unable to sit still. Lucky fans were able to hear the recording live at the 'Beyond the Bassline' exhibition at the British Library - with some of the live adlibs and crowd work being included in the single version currently on streaming. Pressed on an indie-exclusive deep red stain disc.

Review: Multi-instrumentalist and composer Isaiah Collier connects with divine ancestors on a transcendent Direct-To-Disc session, Parallel Universe. The Chicago-based innovator and educator is heard to open up new dimensions in the jazzwise continuum on this LP; a saxophonist by trade, his multi-instrumental talents and compositional prowess have thus far stretched the limits of the form, and Parallel Universe once again embraces the risk and vulnerability that is oh-so-native to the live process he knows all too well. Featuring gospel soul singer Jimetta Rose, AACM and former Art Ensemble of Chicago trumpet player Corey Wilkes, blues-rooted guitarist Michael Damani, regular collaborators Julian Davis Reid, James Russell Sims and Micah Collier, the eight-track album bristles with a sense of love and understanding between players at the top of their game.

Hibaros (4:01)
Something Blue (3:18)
Review: A strikingly unique dance music project from Nagasaki producer, DJ and sound director Keisuke Yamazoe, Aflex Combo has always been an impressive project, straddling several EPs stretching back to 2002 - and all centring, in the artist's own words, on heavy funk beats and obscure jazz and Latin grooves. Jazz Roomn Records now release his cover-remix of the underground club classic 'Hibaros', originally by B&G Rhythm (Donny Beck & Steve Gutierrez, featuring Bobby Lyle). Several unusual time signatures modulate across its A-sided, dancey groove - don't be fooled, things need not settle into a 4/4 repetition to be worthy of a ball - whilst B-sider 'Something Special' lets things slack a little more, letting several, live-recorded drum loops rest on top of one another, while a sort of glockenspiel/celeste-esque instrument tinkles over the top. Something special indeed.

Fresh off a string of international tour dates and collaborations with artists like Daniel Caesar, Charlotte Day Wilson, and Turnstile, the Canadian trio - Al Sow, Chester Hansen, and Leland Whitty - returned to the studio with a vibrant sense of purpose. Joined by touring member Felix Fox-Pappas and key Toronto jazz musicians Kaelin Murphy, Juan Carlos Medrano, and LA's Tyler Lott, they embarked on an intensive recording session at Valentine Studios in Los Angeles. The result is the Mid Spiral series, initially released digitally in three parts - Chaos, Order, and Growth - and now available as a double LP and CD. These suites mark a return to their instrumental jazz roots while seamlessly blending elements of hip-hop, neo-soul, psychedelic and funk.

Decamping for a week-long recording session in the legendary recording studio complex East West, the fable goes that an uninterrupted spate of session magic ensued, out from which five acid jazz and soul bursters sprang forth. A curt selection of just five tracks, of which there were many more recorded during the LA session, the likes of 'Purify', 'It Must Be Love' and 'When The Game Is Played On You' span the whole gamut of modern soul, from the bright to the bare-bones but beguiling.

Shrug!! (3:30)
Review: Premium jazzdance from London's 2000Black in collaboration with soulful vocalist Samii; 'Circus Retreat' and its instrumental version both aim squarely for the rond-point of the big smoke's essence, channelling a sense of respite and sense-making of the anxieties of now, the "continuous confusion that surrounds us today". The lyrics affirm the unfairness of modern urban experience with a joyois irony, with lyrics like "it's not fair" and "I can't feel my feet" gliding spiritedly above a sparky broken beat peppered with sunny soul-jazz ornaments. Then, on the B, there's 'London Boogie', which swaps out the swatches to reflect more of a purple tinge by way of rhythmic Rhodeses and cutoff-filtered stabs; and 'Shrug!!', more of a chiptuney retreat into digital dance-space.

Review: The new album by Quantic - aka. multi instrumentalist, DJ, composer and producer Will Holland - is in many ways an evolution. Now twenty years into his career, Dancing While Falling is the British-born, New York-based artist's most live sounding, euphoric and, in his own words, grown-up release to date. Capturing the beginnings of every good person's revelatory movement from an individual to a collective spirit, Holland originally began the album in his Brooklyn studio, before realising that he didn't just want to make a record that reflected his 'singular pandemic wormhole', but rather one that tapped into the essential togetherness of the human condition. So too does this record explore themes of connection felt through, and made more intense by, the antagonistic bouts of loneliness that characterised COVID-19. Influenced by legendary artists in the scene like Bohannon and Larry Levan, Quantic wanted to make a disco -eaning album at first; "I'm really interested in Latin music and Afro Caribbean rhythms and I think there's a really amazing point in history where the emergence of those rhythms and its combination with American soul sparked what we now know as disco," he says. This PIAS extended edition comes one year on from its initial 2023 release, Quantic here expands on his work by adding a ream of extended versions.

Review: 45trio share their first release for Bloom Musi, this time around covering the stone-cold classic 'Am I The Same Girl', co-written by Eugene Record, of Chi-Lites fame, with Sonny Sanders, for singer Barbara Acklin. In '92, Swing Out Sister covered the album, but this latest rendition hears 45trio's Momoko Suzuki and Reiko Oda lend it a sweeter style by comparison. This dainty, vivid young soul morsel is a fine-tuned fine tune, one you'll undoubtedly want to continue humming along to long after its central, unmistakable hook - transposed up at least two octaves here - has played out. The B-side includes a special instrumental version, no less, released under the name of Young-Holt Unlimited - this one brings the hook line to an organ part, demonstrating the written song's potent and versatile instrumental repertoire.

Review: Almost three decades on from their last release, Acid Jazz forefathers Galliano are back with news of their new LP Halfway Somewhere, released on Gilles Peterson's Brownswood Recordings. Led by lead single 'Circles Going Round The Sun', which proffers a watery, spiritual jazz-dance exposition through which the raspy vocal humours of the group's founder, Rob Gallagher, waxes poetic about the meaning of getting together for a boogie in the club. Where the somatic essence of the night might otherwise be resigned to experience alone, Galliano defy the unfortunate tendency for philistinism among dance music enjoyers in favour of a consistent spoken-word throughline; this is what the group have done since the 1980s, when they arrived as the first act on Gilles Peterson's Talkin' Loud label in 1990, with 'Welcome To The Story'. Their first full-length record to emerge since their first album, Live at The Liquid Room (Tokyo), released in 1997, Halfway Somewhere is a triumphant yet latent return for these essential players.

Here we skew towards the latter ends of things, as Riccio serves up two quick and juicy hits for the thirsty dome. Beaming us right back to the hammock-over-sandy-beachside-view (however phantasmic this vision may be), A-sider 'Between' catches us between a dock and a slurred place, delivering a tipsy sundown mood of a certain downtempo disco variety. Then there's '4ever', an even slurrier beachfire of washed-out Rhodeses and retouched funk drums.

Since their 2013 debut 'Tawk Tomahawk', the group has been sampled by The Carters, Drake and Anderson .Paak, undoubtedly for their smooth genre-bending and soulful sound reminiscent of Erykah Badu - who has since become a big fan. Review: The Remedy marks I G Culture's latest album and it is a profound exploration linking the intricate world of fungi to London's underground dance music scene - a fine concept, we hear you say. This album is a culmination of Culture's musical evolution and it draws parallels between the hidden networks of fungi and the diverse subcultures thriving beneath London's surface. With tracks like 'Vanguard' and 'Medulla Oblongata' featuring collaborations with artists like Rara Zulu and Allysha Joy, The Remedy taps into themes of communal healing and musical diversity. Through signature innovative production and thematic depth, I G Culture celebrates the transformative power of dance music while also promoting unity and well-being within society.

Knock Me Off My Feet (3:13)
Let Me Hear You Say (3:44)
Review: The Allergies' latest offering is a double dose of sample-heavy goodness, a testament to their cratedigging prowess and knack for flipping vintage sounds into dancefloor gold. 'Knock Me Off My Feet' is a glorious reimagining of a late-sixties Southern soul 45. The original Motown-influenced arrangement is already a potent brew, but The Allergies inject it with a booster shot of fat drums, beefy bass, punchy percussion, and soaring horns, propelling it into another dimension entirely. It's a vibrant, energetic track that's sure to get any party started. On the flip side, 'Let Me Hear You Say' transports us back to the sweaty, pulsating energy of the early-80s New York club scene. Old-school MC chants intertwine with strutting disco loops, creating a sleek, slinky groove that's pure retro realness. The beat is infectious and relentless, a hypnotic pulse that demands movement. This 7" single is a delightful double-header of dancefloor delights, a testament to The Allergies' ability to breathe new life into vintage sounds. It's a must-have for any self-respecting vinyl enthusiast and a guaranteed mood-booster for any occasion. The Allergies have once again proven their mastery of the sample-based art form, delivering two tracks that are both respectful of their source material and utterly transformative. A joyous celebration of music's past, reimagined for the present.

Review: Audrey Powne's eagerly anticipated debut album already had us all 'Souled Out', and now we find ourselves served more soul food than our dharmas can handle, with this new remix bundle from Atjazz, Joe Claussell and Musclecars. First comes Claussell with three exquisite and spiritual remixes, each highlighting unique elements of Audrey's original production. Joaquin's Deep Version is quintessential Claussell, merging the bassy textures of a vintage King Tubby dub with vibrant percussion and entraining beats. The 'Sacred Rhythm Mix' is especially apical and peaktime, weaving a threnody of layers that culminate in a boogied-out crescendo. Then come two new versions of Powne's album cut 'Feed The Fire', first by jazzdance maven Atjazz, then by the New York duo Musclecars.

Review: Alongside the wicked new 7" 'Dues And Don'ts / Fraud Fades', Amsterdam producer Soul Supreme simultaneously drops another 45 - of no less import - this time enlisting the fiduciary flows of American producer and emcee Thes One. 'Taking The Stand' includes both the original vocal number and the instrumental on the flip side, with Thes One musing on life's (in)justices, trials and negotiations as Supreme the wunderkind himself segues through wildcard turntable scratches, knocky drum hits and blue-note piano hits.

Review: Wah Wah welcome the return of multi-talented Norwegian producer Espen Horne, following a 24 year hiatus. Sometimes, such resurfacings must happen - even after such long periods of time - if only to reaffirm the round-robin integrity of the label. The Anatomy Of Serene Eloquence is thus the logical, LP-form follow-up to 1999's acid jazz single/EP 'Magnetica', which, though released only to furtive acclaim, launched the label's reputation as a pusher of delights. This new one, however, makes for a remarkably different turn in sound, coming as a full-length of ambient, tremolo-ing and glistening jazz-funk verging on hip-hop (though certainly cut from the same cloth as 'Magnetica'). Vocalists and instrumentalists such as Olav Wollo, Faye Houston and Aich are kept firmly in tow, squeezing the icing onto an already spongy, delicious sonic gateau.

Review: Marcello Cassanelli is back on Ten Lovers Music after previously appearing on TLM030 with the incredible track 'Fantasia'. This time around, we're met with the follow-up, 'Espresso', on which the producer programs every twist and turn of this organic jazzdance bit himself. The title track on the A goes ham on the glitzings and arps, all backed up by jittery electric piano chord counterpoints; the B, 'They Groove', pares back the tempo to focus further on the piquing frequences of the latter instrument's higher notes, set against a weighty backbeat.

Dues & Don'ts (4:21)
Fraud Fades (4:53)
Review: Producer Soul Supreme is back with another 7" record, delivering two new phat'uns to that subsection of fans who prefer things on the wonkier side. Following earlier, acclaimed tributes the likes of A Tribe Called Quest, J Dilla and Mos Def, the new 'Dues and Don'ts' b/w 'Fraud Fades' 45 features two, all-original jazz-funk groovers by the Amsterdam-based keyboardist and producer. The former track burns slowly, carefully building up around a harpsichord improv, Herbie Hancock style, coming heavy-set by a thick and booming drum backing that soon enough late-blossoms into a cinematic, stringed soaring-on-high. The latter track pays complementary homage to the funk drum breaks of yore, with the central drum line around which the track is built echoing Serge Gainsbourg or Clyde Stubblefield, albeit making conspicuous its own electronically sequenced, not entirely live-performed, feel.

Review: Nala Sinephro's latest full-length record, Endlessness, hears the London-based jazz and electronica musician dive deep into the fundaments of nature and existence. Via a decalogue of 'Continuums' - which begin slowly on a note of muted brass and serenely laggard drumming, the first of which rarely stoops to settle on any particular rhythm, more than indulging the not infrequent metric detour - the album swells into a slow but sure expansion in cosmic jazz, which not explicitly but implicitly elicits cosmic thoughts, universal ponderings that exceed the limits of single lifetimes.

His constant resurgence on social media throughout the years affirms this, with 'Modal Soul', his second full-length album in 2005, blowing up time and time again online. It comes as no surprise, his meticulous devotion to hip-hop-jazz was unlike any before him, or since. 'Other Side of Phase' is a 12" three track record, with its title track being the instrumental for the famous anime 'Samurai Champloo', originally featuring one of Japan's most prolific MCs to ever hold the mic. A standout is 'Rainyway Back Home', a fly song combining the keys from an old Jeru the Damaga cut and the drums from a Power of Zeus track. Nujabes will never - ever - go out of style.

Producers Moneyshot and Rackabeat have upped the ante, delivering their biggest beats yet and enlisting an array of talented MCs and vocalists to bring their vision to life. Afrobeat star K.O.G. injects energy into the lively 'Koliko,' while Ohmega Watts delivers sharp, impactful verses on the hard-hitting 'No Flash.' Review: Common Saints' debut album Cinema 3000 arrives on stunning blue meteorite splatter vinyl. Conceived in 2020 by Charlie J Perry, the project embraces an old-school recording style, with Perry laying down real instruments in his London home studio. Using just one mic for the drums and cranking the amps high, Perry has crafted an album that blends classic musicianship with a modern edge. Drawing comparisons to Tame Impala and Khruangbin, Cinema 3000 offers a rich, expansive sound that's both nostalgic and forward-thinking. The album opens with 'Sweet Release,' a track drenched in 70s psych-folk vibes and intricate harmonies, setting the tone for a journey that's as much about the experience as the music itself. 'C'est La Vie' brings a laid-back groove inspired by classic rock influences, while 'Dream On' features Taloula's entrancing guest vocals, adding a Morcheeba-like touch to the mix. Perry's passion for his craft shines through, particularly on tracks like 'Pieces of War,' where his raw, strained vocalsicaptured during a bout of laryngitisideliver an authentic emotional punch. Cinema 3000 is a sonic adventure, crafted for those who appreciate both the art of recording and the pleasure of listening.

Known for his talents of saxophone, flute, and composition across jazz, electronic and dance genres, Haines melds his signature jazz sound with vibrant electronic and disco influences on Notes. Review: The Ballistic Brothers' London Hooligan Soul, originally released in 1995 and now reissued in 2024, is a timeless masterpiece that effortlessly blends trip-hop, acid jazz, and downtempo vibes. From the smooth vocals of 'Portobello Cafe' to the funky horns of 'Soho Cab Ride,' each track delivers a unique sonic experience while maintaining a cohesive soulful atmosphere. 'I'll Fly Away' seamlessly combines breaks and killer basslines, while 'Jah Jah Call You' dives into dub territory with a steady groove. 'I Don't Know' adds a touch of strange easy listening by roughing up familiar samples, while 'Sister Song' infuses rhythmic excitement inspired by Brazilian beats. 'A Beautiful Space' oozes with downtempo funk, while 'Steppin' Into Eden' smoothly transitions into breakbeats. The old-school dub of 'Peckings' exudes joy, while 'Uschi's Lament' closes the album on a mellow, jazzy note. Made up of Curtis in collaboration with Born74, ONJ and Mark Paul Norton, the Earthsouls permit an impressive range on an out-of-body leash, keeping us grounded whilst also laying down some essence, some gist, some spirit. From the opening jam of 'Cause & Effect', across which a deterministic drum daubing from Born74 takes centre stage and shines, to the mid-moment wonky-boxy disco charmer 'Desire For Hire' and the closing funk something-or-other that is 'Across The Tracks', this is a legitimately wicked new EP, one which should probably be suppressed for its propagation of such potent sonic alchemies - that is, if we lived in a more sensible world.

Just two crisp, piquant, fresh, and bubbly uncorkings in sound - 'Life', featuring vocalist Emi Tawata, and the instrumental 'Master Blaster'- are here heard sprayed like buckshot across the stereo system. The former is a candid admission by Tawata of her fear of the dark and ghosts, one which compels the listener to ponder the song's spiritual metaphor - "I'd rather have a piece of toast, watch the evening news" being the lyric of note - while the latter is a comparatively muted four-to-the-floor funk inflammation, held together by a phat but tricksy drum line and overgirding Rhodes.

Review: For every artist who reaches immense heights early into their career, a second album brings much anticipation, and the exceptional tenor saxophonist Nubya Garcia's Odyssey, is no exception. Musicians of the calibre of Garcia and her band have been honing their craft forever, and like this double album's name, all musically travel long and hard paths... Those that arrive at Garcia's deliciously distinct compositions on the legendary Concord Jazz record label, home of that other pioneer Esperanza Spalding, who guests on 'Dawn'. Garcia's luscious orchestrations fuse jazz with d&b, Latin, r&b, dub and beyond, in thoughtful syncopations and intriguing harmonics that speak of journeying. So, relish the funky intro of 'Set it Free' and Garcia's sultry tones with Richie's sweet and endearing siren-like vocals... On 'Seer' enjoy Garcia's precision, locked in heavenly reverbs and echoes playing off Jones' junglism and Armon-Jones' keys in a free jazz blast, and on 'Clarity' let Garcia, with her sisters-in-brass Maurice-Grey and Turton interweave Casimir's Bass in a luxurious cinematic embrace. Garcia with Kwes produce this adventure, one that undoubtedly will receive even more accolades. Odyssey, an album for lovers of all manifestations of jazz excellence to collect and treasure.

In Spring (5:06)
Review: With their latest EP On The Turning Ground still lingering in our minds, World Of Echo have seen fit to reissue Tara Clerking Trio's breakthrough In Spring. The Bristol-based group have become a hotly tipped concern through the sheer strength and strangeness of their music, and one listen to In Spring will explain all. There's a sense of reality-altering time drift in the piano phrase of 'Done Before', even after the dulcet grounding of the cello. 'Night Steps' and 'Memory' spill their melodic flourishes down dank corridors of trip-hop unease and 'In Spring' revels in wonderfully weird psych pop with a whiff of Broadcast's 60s finery.

Review: Pale Jay's latest LP Bewilderment spawns two more treasure here on this new and essential 7" from Karma Chief Records. Up first is an Afro-beat tinged cut, 'In Your Corner' with a subtly uplifting rhythm although listen deeper and you'll get locked in to the lyrics which detail an internal struggle for self-acceptance. On the flip is the album title cut which showcase Jay's signature sounds - silky falsetto over soulful harmonies and dusty hip-hop beats. This one also tell a story, this time about the breakdown of a family and the journey into self that ensues.

Review: The DFA debut of longstanding member Jayson Green also signals the revival of the classic DFA twelve-inch format, so you might playfully suggest it stands for Dying Formats Always. Jay has lent his vocals to various bands such as Panthers, Violent Bullshit, Cheeseburger, and the renowned hardcore group Orchid, always showcasing his wit and humor without veering into cynicism. Assuming a bandleader role, he presents a classic A-side here with the low slung funk of 'Local Jerk,' which was recorded during a lively party. It has tight disco drums, resounding claps and a groove-inducing bassline with big horns. On the B-side, 'I Need Love' unfolds as a darkly humorous nightlife satire.

Review: This release is a story of serendipitous stars aligning. Having released Bala Desejo's anthemic single, 'Baile De Mascaras', back in May 2023, Mr. Bongo could sense that they had a summer classic on their hands. The label always thought that it had the potential to find fans in a dance music audience; and in a further twist of fate, the sensational DJ, producer, and radio presenter Jamz Supernova recently graced their Great Escape in-store event with a phenomenal DJ set. After some feverish digging and emailing to her team, Bongo discovered that she was a fan of the original song and had made a personal edit to play in her DJ sets. Gilles had heard Jamz spinning the edit and asked for a copy, and by sheer coincidence and good fortune, it all fell into place. The track is a beast of an edit that gets heavier and deeper as it progresses.

'Ominira' is his latest long player that once again, finds a home on the French label Favorite Recordings. An album full of rich sounding musical textures that cross boundaries and bridge many genres such as Latin, soul, house, jazz and pop. The vibrant summer jams 'The Bravest Heart' and 'Novos Planos' are A-side standouts that will surely excite veteran and new listeners alike, who are into World music. '4:28' and 'The Mountain' start the second side with some catchy instrumentals that give off memorable beachy 70s vibes. ' Projecoes' closes the album with one of the most soulful performances of the album. All and all, you have a wonderful sounding jazzy grooved piece that ups the expectation of what a Latin jazz album can be. Cafe Del Mar approved!

Dazzling (4:13)
Etsom Ne (4:07)
Review: A strikingly unique dance music project from Nagasaki producer, DJ and sound director Keisuke Yamazoe, Aflex Combo has always been an impressive project, straddling several EPs stretching back to 2002 - and all centring, in the artist's own words, on "heavy funk beats and obscure jazz and Latin samples", albeit with the aid of live musicians. The intermingling of live-recorded and sampled material is always an exciting prospect, often to the extent that we can't tell the difference. Indeed, on this latest reissue of the artist's first ever track - the 2002 cut 'Dazzling' and the formerly unheard 'Etsom Ne' - we recall two janky, blissful jazzdance cuts, splayed across two spray-tanned sides. The former track hears bowing basses and trilling pianos whirl around the mix, as if lost in a nostalgic Millennium-bugged miasma; the latter is much more muted, its most striking elements being its boxy drum machine and expert flute line, betraying a well-integrated highlife influence.

Review: If Detroit as a collective mind knows what's good for it, it'll note 8 Miles To Moenart as one of its most prized dance albums. Tall Black Guy's debut LP hears a tenth anniversary reissue edition via First Word; the artist known personally as Terrel Wallace recalls his humble Detroit beginnings; he was raised on an early staple diet of Motown, and the phono-dubbed source material of which is here heard breezily funnelled and assembled into ten gaunt, sample-flipping house numbers. But this new edition doesn't fail to switch things up either, in fact presenting it almost as a different record; two new tracks feature, 'From Home To Work, And Back' and 'Running The Motor', on top of an alt-mix of the single 'Mon Amie De'troit', previously only available on 7" vinyl. "While it's nice to reminisce,", says Wallace, "it's important to look forwards, so I wanted to include something new here to represent my progression as an artist, so there's some new versions included, that I created with the help of some jazz musician friends of mine."

Review: Embarking on a reissues campaign of lo-fi hip-hop pioneer Nujabes' earliest material, Hydeout Productions share a new edition of the storied producer's second record, Modal Soul. In contrast to his debut Metaphorical Music, Modal Soul is the full-length that really took the world by quiet storm. Laid down after both the solo debut and the release of two Samurai Champloo soundtracks, Modal Soul marked a return to source, and is another testament to what Nujabes did best. Most hip-hop fans will preconsciously, instantly recognise the central, flourishing piano movement of the opener 'Feather', which sticks to the four-bar formula whilst inviting fellow rappers Cise Starr and Akin to wax freely, the central theme being lightness of being: "drifting away like a feather in air / Letting my words take me away from the hurt and despair". The maudlin mood is kept throughout, with cumulative standouts such as 'Reflection Eternal' having also inscribed themselves in collective memory, and more swung experiments like 'Sea Of Cloud' showcasing Nujabes' slowly but surely disclosing a skilful abstraction of breakbeat roots.

Review: The Doober, the latest instalment in the Music for Saxofone and Bass Guitar series by jazz duo Sam Gendel and Sam Wilkes, is a freewheeling listen through covers of songs by artists like Joni Mitchell, Judee Sill, and Sheryl Crow. Recorded live, the album captures the raw energy and spontaneity of their performances that feature Gendel's dynamic saxophone work and Wilkes' bouncing basslines. The duo's approach to covers is far from conventional, as they prioritise spacious textural exploration over faithful renditions. Tracks like 'Rugged Road' and 'The Circle Game' undergo radical transformations, evolving into wriggling, cartoonish masses and modal studies, respectively. Gendel and Wilkes playfully deconstruct each song, infusing them with their own cheeky sense of abandon. Despite their unconventional approach, the duo's chemistry shines through on every track, with each piece serving as a framed photo of outer space, presenting the infinite within a digestible container. The album's highlights include unexpected interpolations, such as a jazz rendition of Sheryl Crow's 'Tomorrow Never Dies' and a seamless transition from Miklos Rozsa's 'Love Theme (From Ben Hur)' into Chris Isaak's 'Wicked Game.'

GEEW is the original artist behind tw of them: 'Bruk Free' is the first and arrives as a vibrant fusion of fleshy synth bass and broken beats with bright chords and florid sax notes. The other is 'Necesitas Esto' (instrumental) which is another sun-worshipping bit of freeform synth jazz-funk. The SLW Geemix is a little more club-ready with some classic Nina Simone vocals re-sung in soulful fashion. Review: Contemporary vocal jazz favourite Jose James makes a staunch return after a long hiatus, following up 2008's The Dreamer with a brand new album, 1978. Combining James' deep love of jazz and hip-hop with songwriting and production nods to R&B heroes Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson and Leon Ware, 1978 is a suavely smooth operation of handclapping funk and organic bossa nova; it's sonically a meeting of the cosmopolitan collective minds New York to Brazil, bringing Afro-Latin sensibilities to the lyrical and productive form that is gritty hip-hop.

It is the first we have heard from Jazztronik, all producer and keysman Ryota Nozaki, since his Universal Language album last year. He has been at this now for 24 years and brings all that know how to these two jams. Review: Jake Long's debut under his own name, City Swamp, is a long-awaited arrival, especially for those familiar with his work leading Maisha. As the drummer and composer for Maisha, Long was instrumental in creating some of the finest UK jazz releases, including There is a Place, which featured luminaries like Nubya Garcia and Amane Suganami. City Swamp not only showcases Long's talent but also serves as a continuation and expansion of the ideas explored in There is a Place. While Maisha's sound was celebratory, City Swamp delves into more dissonant themes with a psychedelic twist, particularly evident in the epic track 'Ideological Rubble.' Despite being a solo project, City Swamp still features many Maisha members, highlighting the collaborative spirit that defines Long's work. With this album, Long firmly establishes himself as a phenomenally talented artist with a unique musical vision, making City Swamp an exceptional debut.

Review: Nothing by Louis Cole, a collaboration with the Metropole Orkest conducted by Jules Buckley, blends classical orchestration with dance music, pop, and jazz, showcasing Cole's unique and ultra-flexible production style. The album features 17 tracks, 15 of which are brand new, avoiding orchestral renditions of his hits and instead presenting fresh compositions. The lead single, 'Things Will Fall Apart,' highlights Cole's feather-light vocals over an exciting orchestration of funk percussion, strings, horns and barbershop backup vocals. Recorded during live performances, Nothing captures the energy and emotion of Cole's multi-date sold-out European tour with the Metropole Orkest. The project emphasises Cole's desire to create music with deep emotional impact while remaining straightforward and accessible. Cole meticulously mixed the album himself, ensuring his pure vision was realised.

Simple Melody (feat Linda Muriel) (4:54)
Simple Melody (feat Linda Muriel - radio mix) (4:23)
Review: Contrary to the name, Andre Louis, Linda Muriel and Fitzroy Facey's 'Simple Melody' hardly uses just a simple melody at all. Its main vocal is a laid-back but still nimbly chromatic harmony, and the most extended melody is a G-funk whistle that prefers to revel in complexity. The simplicity of this record isn't in its composition, but rather its feel. Rather, this is "simplicity" masked under a streamlined and hothoused complexity: the breezy connotations of Latin funk and bruk fusion are alone enough to mask the erogations, and to inspire mid-party mollification - the perfect accompaniments, as have already been explored by its makers, to the carefree vibes of festivals like Love Supreme.

Review: Learning To Let Go offers a profound meditation on release, acceptance, grounding, and surrender, moving forward along life's current. Like previous albums, it is both inward and outward-facing, catering to individuals and groups alike. 'Becoming Present' is peaceful, with percussion and devotion encouraging listeners to embrace the present moment. 'Reactive State' contrasts sharply, featuring hard-hitting percussion and decimated drums, complemented by a serenading flute. The mood shifts with 'Attachments,' a tale of two halves that twists between hypnotic and swirling. This track requires time and patience, as listeners witness an enthralling interaction between drums and keys, eventually drifting into the soul-inflected 'Grounding.' The time you invest in this album is well worth it. 'Letting Be' unfolds naturally, with majestic string and harp arrangements complemented by rhythmic percussion, each musician finding equanimity and peace within the composition. 'Letting Go' speaks for itself, embodying the album's theme. The album concludes with 'Forward, Only,' showcasing a group of musicians comfortable in their stride and confident in their thinking, ready to move with whatever happens. Learning To Let Go is a beautifully crafted journey, emphasising the importance of release and acceptance.

Review: Black Decelerant, a collaboration between Khari Lucas (Contour) and Omari Jazz, explores spiritual jazz through modern tones, weaving sonic reflections on Black existence, life and grief, expansion and constraint, and the personal versus the collective. Their eponymous debut album fosters a serene refuge amidst societal turbulence and aims to transcend fleeting moments. Conceived from an intuitive process, the album emerged from remote sessions spanning six months in 2020, bridging South Carolina and Oregon. Improvised instrumentals and sampled productions became conduits for their inner dialogues and offered solace during existential crises amid lockdowns and social unrest in the US.

Review: Tommy Guerrero's sublime debut album Loose Grooves And Bastard Blues carved out his name as a musician, and followed hot on the heels of an already established skateboarding career. It's not often we can name an artist whose talents lend just as well to the axe as they do to the deck, but it's plain to see on this insouciant jazz/bossa nova collection: Guerrero is one dextrous bloke. With the skate career held firmly in mind, we can easily imagine these numbers as the backing cuts to a fish-eyed trickstyle video; it's a great testament to the pure joy of music-making too, with Guerrero insisting: "it was never meant to be released. I was just recording for the fun of it - still my fave. Oh so naive!"

The album's lead single 'One Hand One Bounce' sets the tone with its spacious and introspective vibe, all moody dynamics that draw the listener in. Drawing from influences like Booker T & The MG's and The Meters, Karate Boogaloo infuse their music with a blend of cinematic tension, whimsical melodies, and eerie discordance, all underpinned by heavy funk grooves. The band's chemistry, developed over 15+ years of friendship and musical collaboration, shines through each track, creating a cohesive, immersive listening experience. Now it makes its debut on wax and remains a bold listen that was devised as a soundtrack to a non-existent exploitation film. It fuses funk, jazz, and Afrobeat influences with plenty of niche cinematic references such as the zombies in Lucio Fulci's horrors and Umberto Lenzi's cannibalistic adventures. The resulting mash up is beguiling to say the least with horror-tinged exotica next to Fela Kuti rhythms and elements of Italian Library music and colourful psychedelia. A boundary pushing work to say the least.

Sao Paolo (2:42)

Review: The Stance Brothers strike another battle pose on their latest experimental 7" 'Sao Paolo / Timmy', proffering a can't-quite-place-it je ne sais qoui, perhaps best describable as something between boxy jazz-funk on the A, and inner-childlike, xylophonic dub on the B. Deceptively the alias of one person - Finnish drummer and producer Teppo "Teddy Rok" Makynen - the Stance Brothers' project nominally takes after the likes of jazz-funk greats like Bob James & CTI, but the B-side in particular here offers much more than that set of references might connote. The A-side conforms to the reference enough, with chromatic Rhodeses and crispily jabbing drums giving rise to a numinous analog arpeggiation at the end; but the B really takes the cake, indulging everything from shaken digidub eighths to tottering mallet putters.

Review: Saxophonist Joe Armon-Jones teams up with vocalist Hak Baker and saxophonist Nubya Garcia for a fresh EP paying homage to the dub music tradition in the UK. 'Wrong Side Of Town' homes in on this titanic genre, riffing off the trademark 'horns cut' that would appear on the B-sides of roots reggae EPs in the 70s and 80s. With Hak's vocals effortlessly evincing a South London drawl, it's clear from the outset that usual, prejudiced ideas of what the wrong side of town would normally be is flipped on its head; truly, it's the area outside Bank station and the Royal Exchange that's the real no-go. Note: B-sider 'Nubya's Side Of Town' was also played by legendary UK sound system founder Jah Shaka in one of his last sessions before his sad passing in April 2023.

Review: A long-standing figure on the London jazz scene, trumpeter Harry Beckett kept his music fresh over a long career, and none more so than on his debut On-U Sound release in 2008 produced by Adrian Sherwood, which invites reggae and dance music influences to happily live alongside his modal jazz flavours. Now reissued posthumously, The Modern Sound Of Harry Beckett tracks the legacy of this contemporary jazz eminent, who passed away in 2010. Beckett channels both his Caribbean roots and trumpeting abilities, offering a novel confounding of sparse, skittish beats verging on digidub, with spryly slick soundings of the horn. Made up of isolated recordings laid down by Beckett, and then celebratedly combined with dancehall and dub movements afterwards, our fave has to be the unabashedly dubstep godsend, 'Like You Didn't Know', which spreads Beckett's horns out to virtuosic effect, against a wickedly womping wash.

Review: The Ballistic Brothers are back with another reissued nine-track dose of bare but big breaks belligerents. This cult '90s supergroup emerged from the steaming manhole covers of the London hip-hop underground - as the saying goes, "if you were part of any clubbing tribe in the early/mid 90s, you will have danced to the Ballistic Brothers". Made up of Darren Rock, Darren House, Ashley Beadle, David Hill and Uschi Classen, the bulk of their fame wafted forth from a swathe of surreptitious vinyl releases that took the record-digging community by storm at the time, yet which also invited much speculation as to their original membership (the wonders of the internet weren't so readily available back then). A variegated selection of tracks culled from many a different EP, we're compelled to recall a golden time when breakbeats weren't so brash, and in fact served as rhythmic accompaniments to a set of otherwise beauteous atmospheres. Cases in point include 'Save The Children', which combine trippy pan-pipes and funky organ with a theme of charitable concern, and 'Blacker 94 EQ', which impresses us yet more with its acid jazz breakouts and electric piano solo and which makes stark use of the suspenseful string line endemic to the sound.

Oakes' expressive vocals and the band's tight performance, especially with the legendary Nathan Haines, create an uplifting and captivating experience. Review: Mighty Vertebrate is the International Anthem leader debut from Adelaide, Australia-born bassist and composer Anna Butterss. Having racked up many a studio credit for her bass playing on the international jazz and avant-garde circuit, Butterss now makes her debut, homing back in on her local West Coast music scene to deliver a sombre round number of unorthodox, bass-led experiments. Despite her star instrument taking centre stage as ever, Butterss works to a bulleted-list formula worthy of a performance artist, constructing her album from a set of oblique strategies including: "I'm going to make a song where the bass doesn't function in the role of a bass" and "I'm going to work on this for an hour and then I'm going to stop". Living up to the name, Mighty Vertebrate builds a structural complexion from disparate found parts, making for a mighty experimental jazz jaunt.

The Iceman (2:42)
Review: The Leonhart Brass Band, the latest project from trumpeter Michael Leonhart, was born out of the 2020 lockdown, an inventive response to the halt of his 18-piece orchestra performances at NYC's Jazz Standard. Stripped down to a brass-heavy ensemble that could perform outdoors without amplification, Leonhart took inspiration from classic brass bands like Dirty Dozen and Rebirth, blending in hip-hop and funk influences to create a unique sound. The opening track, 'Jabbar', is a tribute to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the basketball icon with a rich jazz background. Centred on an infectious bass riff in C minor, Leonhart's trumpet and Jason Marshall's bass saxophone deliver bold, brassy solos, conjuring the vitality and strength of the track's namesake. Another standout is 'The Iceman', a nod to George Gervin, the basketball great known for his unflappable demeanour on the court. The brass section splits into two distinct groups, creating counterpoint melodies that mirror Gervin's grace and intensity. Stuart Bogie's baritone sax solo, complete with tape echo, adds an unexpected texture, grounding the track in a deep, funky groove. With members from Antibalas, the Dap-Kings, and Red Baraat, the Leonhart Brass Band fuses tight musicianship with an exhilarating energy that carries the weight of New Orleans tradition, while forging its own path in the modern jazz and funk worlds.

Review: .In celebration of Tomaga's tenth anniversary, the 'Sleepy Jazz for Tired Cats' EP shows Tomaga's avant-garde sonic world in a refined, remastered format by Marta Salogni. Valentina Magaletti and Tom Relleen crafted Tomaga as a creative lab and this EP brims with the duo's raw, genre-defying ethos. The title track, 'Sleepy Jazz for Tired Cats', explores a droning, minimalist aesthetic with metallic instrumentation, inspired by the raw spontaneity of Congolese street music. Its slow, hypnotic rhythms evoke dark, psychedelic atmospheres, immersing listeners in its abstract yet entrancing flow. 'Sunday Ticket' captures an ancient, almost ritualistic essence with experimental collages that echo aboriginal sounds. Lastly, 'Platform Shoe' melds tribal and nu-jazz influences, forging a distinctly "spaced-out" sound that defies easy categorisation. Tomaga's relentless exploration and impact will have you on a journey that is both introspective and otherworldly.

Review: London Fields by Ambient Jazz Ensemble, the project of composer Colin Baldry, explores the musical tapestry of London through a soulful and cinematic lens. While the name suggests ambient jazz, the album is more an orchestral soul journey, drawing inspiration from Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield and the urban sounds of Moses Boyd and Steam Down. Tracks like 'Signature' kick off with a contemporary groove courtesy of Baldry's son, Sam, while Lynsey Ward's vocals on 'Locked' provide a powerful, emotional core. Throughout the album, lush orchestrationifeaturing the Adderbury Ensemble and saxophonist Ollie Westonicreates an expansive, atmospheric sound. The title track's late sax solo surprises amidst carefully composed arrangements. Instrumental tracks, such as 'Standing On The Edge of the World', are reflective pauses, though at times they feel secondary to the vocal pieces. The album crescendos with the dramatic 'London Fields' and 'When The Dust Settle', capturing the vastness of the city. London Fields impresses with its emotional depth and epic scale, delivering a rich, evocative soundscape that blurs the lines between jazz, soul, and orchestral music.

Throwing back to their debut EP 'Blue Skies', which even pre-dates their involvement with record labels, Blue Eclipse signals a circling back to their origins while also embracing the new; the pair's usual jazztronica remit is lent the utmost contemporary spin, with notes of drill, neoclassical, trap and Jersey bounce - all still prevalent styles - peeking through in these latest productions.

Review: Alfa Mist and Amika Quartet share a new ennead of never-heard-before tracks, alongside a few expansions on earlier releases: Recurring. An eternal return of saintly jazz and storytelling hip-hop, the record comes hot on the heels of Mist's recent Variables LP (2023) and the Manchester quartet's Amika's earlier 'Exist' release from earlier in 2024. The latter group have toured extensively with Alfa Mist in recent years, and the new live record notably foreruns its full release with a new exclusive, 'Checkpoint (Violence)', on which Mist not only drums, but at the same time MCs, with verve and flair. Here Mist concept-checks everything from modern-day apartheid to astrology (and exasperations thereof - "don't ask me your starsign"). Amika, meanwhile, embellish each mix with searing string arcos and long fibrous tugs, which seem, ironically, to assure us about the future, though they do lend the songs a demure mood: "don't fret".

Review: Cromagnon Band's Mode is a deeply immersive journey into instrumental creativity, crafted through a unique process of live jamming and reverse engineering. The trioidrummer Tom Watt, bassist Lenny Walker, and multi-instrumentalist Bert Pageitake grooves from their favourite tracks, jam until something fresh emerges, then reshape it into fully produced pieces. The result is a psychedelic blend of dark funk, Nordic psych/jazz, boom-bap hip-hop breaks and riff-heavy rock reminiscent of early Black Sabbath. With no specific narrative, Mode leaves room for listeners to interpret and create their own mental imagery. Its sound is cinematic, layered, and transcendental, showcasing the band's broad musical influences and love for sonic experimentation. This second album, and their debut release on BBE Music, is a testament to their live jamming technique and musical pedigree, with Bert Page's Moog and Rhodes providing rich textures alongside his sax and clarinet. Mode is a must-listen for fans of boundary-pushing instrumental music.

Review: A year on from his Robe Of Dreams album on the Neroli label, UK techno veteran and jazz lover Kirk Degiorgio is back with The Statement. This record sees him widen his musical scope at the same time as continuing the good work laid down by that last outing. It is a freeform and intriguing exploration of broken beats and meandering basslines, haunting trumpet leads and a cacophony of drums. Ambient pads, soaring vocals from Beauty Room vocalist Jinadu and elements of everyone from Sun Ra to Lonnie List Smith all colour these most magnificent sounds.

Remember To Remember
To The Unknowledgeable One
Review: Rick Holmes' Remember to Remember is a gem of a reissue from 1981, faithfully presented with both original tracks on each side. this 12" vinyl from gold mink records is gleaming with top soul-jazz and funk music with a crisp production that stands out. Sadly, Rick Holmes recently passed away which makes this reissue extra special. The title track 'Remember to Remember' and the B-side 'Tothe Unknowledgeable One' showcase infectious grooves and soulful rhythms that mark this record as a true classic. Hearing it for the first time on jfm/horizon radio in the early 80s was a revelationiintroducing many to rare groove soul. Records like this weren't typical at parties, where uptempo tracks ruled, making its presence all the more striking. It played a crucial role in the rare groove scene, which was just on the brink of exploding and changing how underground soul was appreciated. for collectors and enthusiasts, this reissue is a nostalgic and essential piece of music history.

Review: Well on from his startling 2021 debut 'The Celestial Suite', Los Angeles' neo soul production maestro Pale Jay has since gone on to proffer many a 7" record, of which 'In Your Corner' is the latest treat to feast your ears. Both shorn ahead of time from his latest LP, Bewilderment, 'In Your Corner' and 'Bewilderment' are pensive retro soul falsettoers, both of which feature Jay's own, longing vocals, and evince a mood of being caught in between two difficult paths in life. The A uplifts with its surrounded Hammonds and righteous get-through-it lyrics, concerning self-discovery amid self-judgment. The B-side, by contrast, tells the story of the disintegration of a family, and skews more lo-fi, vintage hip-hop.

Review: Club Warme Deken & San Proper tease a new EP with this tidy new 7". As you would expect from the always left-of-centre San Proper this is a fresh pair of cuts with a notable pop influence. 'Night Susan' is a slow and raw beat with filtered vocals and whirring machine sounds, a low slung hip-hop edge and funky bass guitar riffs adding the hooky charm. 'Boom-A-Rang' on the flip is a great collage of sound made from ad-libbed vocals, percussive hits, deep drums and tanging hits. Two charming curveballs for sure.

Review: The Jazzbois return to the studio to cook up a mellow, live-feel eleven-tracker, Still Blunted. Conjuring images of a proverbial "beat-kitchen" - visually somewhere between a sonic architect's atelier and a beanbag-laden jazz chillout room with the AC on full blast - the supergroup of Tamis Czirjak, Bencze Molnar, Viktor Sagi and Dominik Kosztolanszki prove adept at the ideal of unbothered cool central to much contemprary jazz fusion, yet neither do they hold back from the various effervescings and splurges of climactic energy to which said jazzy sound-form gives rise. 'Chrome' is one such track, peaking on a sizzling note of held noise-chord after a florid conflagration of sax and rapidfire drum fill.

In reality, the sounds of Brokenchord's Sonte Island Tracks are indeed fitting for that fantasy. Lo-fi beats, half-heard melodies, knackered drums. It's intriguing and evocative and could be from the future or a forgotten old 70s classic. Either way, it's great.

Following the much loved 'Alex Santos Y Su Orquesta', 2021's next step in Latinizing said quasi-conceptual ensemble, we've now landed in the project's live ambit. 'The Alex Santos Orchestra On Tour' captures just two live highlights from a much more recent outing (given the mystification surrounding the project, this may or may not have happened). Whatever the case, these recordings span both potentialities, retaining something of a highly-strung Hammond organ come upfront-drumkit drama on the B-side, 'Mr Clean', and an equally stirring version of the main theme from 'The Godfather' on the A.

While often associated with the 'new UK jazz' scene, their fusion of live instrumentation and electronic elements extends far beyond that label in truth and now this release pushes their sound further than ever. It blends spiritual jazz, dub, experimental, and electronic styles into powerful, swirling soundscapes that work as well on the head as they do heel. An homage to his home parish of Queens, New York, this record was recorded in the bottomless sonic quarry that is the Diamond Mine studio. Hot on the heels of run-up singles 'Make Friends', the album continues Kaiyote's virtuosic phatjazz meanderings, and thematically revolves around ideas of true friendship and breezy love relationships, with the aforementioned lead single following lead singer Nai Palm hearing the following statement: "you don't make friends, you recognise them". This 7" single procures two formerly-thought-lost recordings made at the basement of the Regent Drives studio in Middletown, Ohio by the band, who consist of Rob Houk on drums, Matt Amburgy on keys and Terry Cole on bass. Seemingly crafted for the express purpose of hip-hop sampling in mind, both tracks are out-and-out funkers, with the B-side's 'Queen City' going for a straight-up, kick-backed 80ish BPM, and the A's titular number laying down an interesting organic funk groove that perhaps only the more seasoned of samplers would have the guts to sift.

With the highs lopped off and the intonations muted, this is a serene, expectation-buttressing album.

Review: Jimi Tenor's first single from his upcoming new Timmion album Is There Love In Outer Space? evokes the 1980s cosmic sound of Nigerian keyboardist Mamman Sani. The psychedelic desert blues guitar solo transports listeners to a cold Sahara dune where you witness a magical sunrise on Earth. It encourages you to close your eyes and let the music paint vivid colourscapes in your mind as the minimal vocals feel like a welcoming chant for the rising sun. This collaboration between Tenor and Cold Diamond & Mink is another delight that melds cosmic and raw soul music and very much gets us excited for the full length to come.

Review: Tenor saxophonist, bandleader and composer Nubya Garcia returns with her sophomore album, Odyssey, her second release on the Concord Jazz imprint, out in September 2024. Backlit by a decidedly crimson red, Garcia comes back by the likes of Kwes. and Joe-Armon Jones for a full dozen tracks of epical spiritual jazz travails. Laconic yet ipso facto expressive, Garcia remarks of the record that she felt that it ended up 'transversing so many things'; rather than settling on just one universe as a homeward base, Garcia finds freedom in the continual movement between universes. Led by the tense but no less joy-inflective 'The Seer', on which moods of broken jazz, and that of a treacherous but sagacious journeys, is evinced, Odyssey kicks things off on a larger-than-life note.

Review: The EP Lagos Paris London by Yannis & The Yaw, featuring the late Tony Allen, is a testament to the powerful creative synergy between two musical luminaries. Initially envisioned as a nostalgic Afrobeat project, the collaboration took on a life of its own, weaving together elements of rock, funk, jazz, and dub in a dynamic fusion. Recorded over a series of sessions in a Paris studio, the music emerged organically from jams and loops, guided by the intuitive telepathy between Yannis Philippakis and Tony Allen. Joined by Allen's regular collaborators, the result is a collection of near-complete songs imbued with high-spirited, loose-grooved exuberance. Despite facing challenges such as scheduling issues and Covid restrictions, Yannis felt a deep obligation to complete the project in honor of Allen's memory and his desire to share the music with the world. Lagos Paris London serves as both a celebration of their friendship and a timeless testament to the enduring influence of Tony Allen's rhythmic talent.

Review: Svaneborg Kardyb, the award-winning Danish duo of Nikolaj Svaneborg (keys) and Jonas Kardyb (drums), masterfully blend minimalism, jazz, and Scandinavian folk influences into a stunning album. Their forthcoming album, Superkilen, draws inspiration from the vibrant Superkilen Park in Copenhagen, a symbol of diversity and unity. Much like the park's transformation from wasteland to communal space, the duo's music evokes serenity amidst the chaotic backdrop of modern life. Following their acclaimed debut Over Tage, Superkilen continues their exploration of lush melodies, subtle electronic textures, and intricate rhythms, into a calm yet dynamic energy. The duo's compositions offer a fresh, Nordic take on jazz, drawing comparisons to artists like Nils Frahm and Esbjorn Svensson, while retaining their own distinct, organic interplay. While less psychedelic and more digitally nuanced than their American counterparts, such as the Benevento/Russo Duo, Svaneborg Kardyb's music remains engaging and playful, with an infectious groove. Their 2024 release is an authentic, refreshing listen, perfect for those seeking tranquility with an undercurrent of joy in an otherwise fast-paced world.

Review: Since 2019, Ryozo Band have attracted the attention of fans both in their native Japan and overseas, owing to their deft workings in the realm of jazz-funk and fusion, all tempered by a buzzing affective irreverence. In 2023, they released the 'Utopia' EP, and now follow up said award-winner with yet another, equally affecting EP-form homage to all things felicific and dopaminergic: 'Pleasure'. Kicking off with an impressive, minimalist keyboard exposition, the Ryozo formula soon unfurls as a counterpoint of uptempo wrist-flicked drumming and two horns in unison, overlaid further by sax, trumpet and synth saw. Heavily borrowing from rhythmic and vibeish trends in the current UK jazz scene, 'Pleasure' is a synaptic surge of various sonic serotonins and oxytocins, amounting to what is best describable both as a qualitative and quantitative hedonic calculation in jazz.

From the ethereal synth-laden tracks to the funky grooves reminiscent of Sun Ra, each song explores a different sonic universe. Review: Reggie Dokes, the legendary deep house and techno DJ/producer from Atlanta, Georgia, has finally released his highly expected Vault Volume 1. Originally released in 2005 as a CDR-only, this extended pressing allows fans to experience the magic of Dokes' music on a whole new level. With its captivating blend of jazz, techno, and house, the album takes listeners on a sonic journey through Dokes' unique musical landscape. 'My Peeps On 6' sets the tone with its smooth, deep house vibes, while 'Make Believe' transports listeners to a spacey, funk-infused post-apocalyptic realm. The beautiful 'Love Reigns' provides a moment of respite with its gentle bell chimes and bedtime melody, before 'D-Funk' drops a heavy bass kick and dystopian atmosphere. The album closes with the aptly named 'Freakazoid,' an explosive track that leaves listeners begging for more. Dokes' expertise in crafting atmospheric and emotive soundscapes is clear throughout the album. His ability to fuse elements of jazz, techno, and house creates a unique and immersive experience that will appeal to fans of all genres.

Review: When Keyon Harrold lists the influences that he turned to during the creation of his rich and evocative new album Foreverland, he cites the likes of Radiohead, Fleet Foxes, Fela Kuti, John Coltrane, and, for a second, he becomes vulnerable; the list is too basic, too serious-music-listener-starter-pack. But, out of that moment of insecurity, he spins an indelible flex: "You are what you eat, and I have a pretty strict diet in dope shit. Taking in Keyon Harrold's career to-date, it's clear that the 'world-class trumpeter' (Essence) and composer is very serious about that diet. He's a jazz musician but in the most expansive sense, working with a list of dream collaborators: generational legends Keith Richards and Diana Ross; rap stars like Mac Miller and Nas; neo-soul icons Erykah Badu and D'Angelo; and modern soul stars Black Pumas and Leon Bridges. His circle of regular collaborators is formidable and includes his music industry mentor Common (who hired him for his first touring gig), his New School classmate Robert Glasper, and GRAMMY winners Maxwell, PJ Morton, Gregory Porter, and YEBBA. Even apart from its compositional intricacies and stylistic innovations, Foreverland is a triumph of resilience and empowerment. "What will be said when you're gone?", says Keyon. "If you're not living life - getting beat up, getting your heart broken, winning, losing - what are you doing? What about your life can people learn from? If you don't put yourself in the ring sometimes, there won't be anything." On Foreverland, Keyon takes life's challenges head-on - and emerges, in both music and in life, with a renewed sense of purpose.

Highlights include the opening klang of 'Vital Signs' with its driving drum break giving way to a fantastic planet-esque sea of modular squealings and contractions and the abstract and disarmingly groovy plod of 'Possible Danger'.

Review: Japanese duo Crusic have a history of delivering inspired cover versions. Previously, they've offered up stellar, jazz and jazz-funk-fuelled takes on Todd Terje's 'Inspector Norse', 808 State rave classic 'Pacific', and Azymuth's Brazilian fusion anthem 'Jazz Carnival'. Here, they present their interpretation of one of the most sublime soulful house tracks of all time - Kings of Tomorrow's 'Finally'. Their version is warm, dreamy and gently breezy, with Misa Sugiyama's beautiful lead vocals rising above a summery blend of shuffling jazz-house beats, twinkling pianos, warming synths, heady electric piano chords and spacey electronics. The quality of this instrumentation (and the pair's superb arrangements) comes through loud and clear on the accompanying instrumental take.

Review: SML is the quintet of bassist Anna Butterss, synthesist Jeremiah Chiu, saxophonist Josh Johnson, percussionist Booker Stardrum, and guitarist Gregory Uhlmann. Together they present their debut album Small Medium Large, a collection of long-form improvisations recorded during two separate two-night stands at the beloved Los Angeles venue ETA. Forming the perfect locale in which to boost their initial rise, ETA is perhaps no longer a fitting name - with SML, we're no longer pondering this band's estimated time of arrival. Small Medium Large is a sublime assemblage of circulatory grooves and textural anomalies, at different moments recalling the synth-laced improvisations of Herbie Hancock's Sextant, the jagged dance punk of Essential Logic, the rhythmic revelry of Fela Kuti, the low-end elasticity of Parliament/Funkadelic, or the glitchy dub techno of Pole.

Their sound, an intriguing fusion of industrial, jazz, psychedelia and minimalism, is characterised by its multi-instrumental approach. Rather than opting for complex abstractions, the duo's minimalist compositions evoke darkly psychedelic and surreal imagery, capturing the essence of unsettled dreams and subconscious thoughts. Futura Grotesk elevates their exploration further, yielding compositions that are hauntingly evocative and richly layered. This reissue celebrates a decade of innovation and artistic expression.

Review: Adding to the immense new influx of Nujabes reissues comes this 6x7" box-set from Starbase Japan, which covers the entirety of the lo-fi hip-hop pioneer's original soundtrack contributions to the storied Samurai Champloo soundtrack. A classic anime series based on the bloody travails of samurai, and set in Edo-period Japan, Samurai Champloo is perhaps best known by its soundtrack, which consists almost entirely, and at first seemingly incongruously, of instrumental hip-hop - while the temporal disjunct of diegetic content and music might've seemed rum to some, true heads get the intuitive vibe; the combo was a compelling one, the real deal, and it was unsurprisingly crafted by Nujabes alone. This box-set consists entirely of 7"s, and includes the same songs and background music heard in the original series, as well as a special run of merch, in celebration of the series' 20th anniversary.
