You Laugh At My Face
Cat: FM 017. Rel: 07 May 19
Patrick Cowley & Jorge Socarras - "You Laugh At My Face" (Tobias version) (7:15)
Half Hawaii - "Watch The Flash" (6:07)
Review: For the latest release on his quietly impressive Foom label, Ben Freeney has secured the rights to release two killer cuts, both of which are significant in their own way. On the A you'll find a previously unreleased Tobias Freund remix of "You Laugh at My Face", an obscure late '70s proto-new wave collaboration between legendary disco producer Patrick Cowley and art-punk vocalist Jorge Socarras (best known for being part of San Fran band Indoor Life). Freund's version is undulating and evocative, with spacey analogue synth motifs and drowsy vocals rising above a pitched-down breakbeat groove. On the flip, German duo Half Hawaii return to action after a six-year break, offering up a slow-burn delight rich in drowsy, melancholic motifs, shuffling drums and dewy-eyed vocals.

Nothing Matters When We Are Dancing Vol 10: Cosmic Hole

CPI - "Mount Anal" (8:14)
Juan Ramos - "Skincrawler" (6:05)
Kris Baha - "Paralleled" (6:53)
Bezier - "Starpoint" (7:56)
Review: Notorious Discodromo helmed session CockTail D'Amore celebrate their 10th birthday with a compilation that highlights many different aspects of the much loved and musically adventurous Berlin party. The Cosmic Hole is the corner of the club that champions slower, freakier sounds, and the corresponding 12" kicks off in style with the throbbing acid chug of "Mount Anal" by CPI. Juan Ramos brings something of a nightmarish industrial clamour to "Skincrawler", while Kris Baha gets bombastic on the full-fat "Paralleled". Bezier completes the package with "Starpoint", a mystical affair shaped out by yearning strings and subtle rhythms.

Vista
GI Jane (Fill Me Up) (Jackson Auro remix)
Review: Returning in August with his first album in over eight years, Jackson seriously impressed with the psychedelic cocktail of influences that went into making Glow, an album that captured the enthusiasm French dance music had in the last decade. This EP sees standout album track "GI Jane", with its gleeful singalong chorus and unashamedly rhythmic stomp that sounds like classic Soulwax paired up with the delightfully skewed French touch house of "Vista". Hudson Mohawke is a fantastic choice to remix "Vista", enhancing it with a cathedral-like scale, while Jackson himself provides his own, more straight-faced remix of "GI Jane", turning it into the kind of moody electro rave banger not heard since the days of Trash.

Review: Originally released in 1984, this album remains one of the most experimental and groundbreaking albums in electronic music with Jarre's fans including everyone from Jeff Mills to Eno and Depeche Mode's Martin Gore. With its fusion of cutting-edge sampling techniques and rich, multicultural vocal work, the album stands out as a pivotal moment in both Jarre's career and in the history of music production. For its 40th anniversary, the album has been reissued in a remastered edition, with a bonus track, 'Moon Machine', making it an ideal time to revisit its timeless innovation. The album utilizes the Fairlight CMI sampler to manipulate vocal samples from over 25 languages, creating a truly unique soundscape. Tracks like 'Ethnicolor' and 'Diva' exhibit Jarre's use of avant-garde techniques, blending musique concrete influences with electronic textures and vivid, expressive vocals from artists like Laurie Anderson. The album's surreal qualities are further enriched by its diverse use of genres and influencesifrom the haunting 'Ethnicolor 1' to the funky, upbeat groove of 'Zoolookologie'. Though Zoolook diverges from the atmospheric, space-themed sound of Oxygene and Equinoxe, its experimental nature and complex structure push boundaries and make it an essential listen. While some tracks, like 'Woolloomooloo' and 'Blah Blah Kafe', slow the pace, they provide a contrast to the more intense moments, rounding out the album's broad, eclectic emotional range. Ultimately, Zoolook is a landmark in blending technology, culture and sound, and this anniversary edition is a fitting tribute to an album that helped shape the future of electronic music.

Review: Although arguably best known for her angular, industrial-influenced techno output, Siliva Jimenez Alvarez AKA Jasss has proved adept at delivering oddball electronica, modular-rich ambient and the kind of scuzzy industrial pop of which Trent Reznor would undoubtedly prove. A World of Service, her sophomore album and first for Ostgut Ton, builds on the latter side of her sound while expanding into new musical territory such as autotune-sporting future R&B ('Luis'), buzzing downtempo darkness (the immersive and intoxicating, percussion-rich 'Busto'), leftfield 21st century synth-pop (the curious but excellent 'A World Of Service') and even a dash of jangling, radio-friendly cheeriness ('In Your Mouth'). An impossible album to pigeonhole, but one that's consistently excellent and genuinely worthy of further inspection.

Ma Revelation Mystique
Review: Over the last decade, Zombie Zombie man Etienne Jaumet has been one of Versatile Records' most consistent artists, delivering a string of albums in an inimitable style that sits somewhere between synthesizer-heavy 1970s horror soundtracks, experimental electro-jazz, paranoid ambient, punchy Afro-funk-fusion and quirky, kosmiche-era synth-pop. He's at it again on "8 Regards Obliques", variously opining on the threat of nuclear war over a chugging beat ("Nuclear War"), layering jaunty Afro horns over deep space electronics ("Unity"), showcasing his deep and electronic take on jazz-house ("Theme De Yo Yo"), laying down mind-altering jazz ragas ("Spiritual"), and escorting us to some far-off galaxy (the astonishingly good "Ma Revelation Mystique").

Review: Having explored the world of 1980s post-punk on last year's brilliant [Cease & Desist] compilation, Optimo's JD Twitch has now turned his attention to cold wave and industrial from the same period. With So Low, Twitch has delivered a fine selection that encompasses both cuts from well-known names - think Tuxedomoon, Chris & Cosey, Front 242 and Conrad Schnitzler - as well as ultra-deep selections from formidably obscure acts. In general, the veteran Glaswegian's selections tend towards the darker corners of 1980s experimental electronic music culture, but it's that - plus the sheer surprising brilliance of his choices - that makes So Low such an essential listen.

Waiting Game
Review: Fans of luxurious, bittersweet, grown-up synth-pop rejoice - Junior Boys are back with their first album in six years! The Canadian twosome's music has lost none of its depth and sparkle, with Waiting Game containing the same key ingredients as its predecessors - namely dreamy, warming chords, soft-focus drum machine rhythms, melancholic melodies, occasional guitars and the distinctive, evocative vocals of front man Jeremy Greenspan. It's a formula that rarely fails if truth be told, so it's no surprise to find that Waiting Game is a genuinely strong set. Our picks of a very strong bunch include the simmering, sunset-friendly warmth of the CD-closing title track and the hushed, ultra-deep shuffle of 'Night Walk', where bubbly electronics, woozy pads and lo-fi electronic drums catch the ear.

Review: In recent interviews, Justice explained that fourth album Hyperdrama - the wildly successful French duo's first for seven years - was born out of the idea of getting elements of disco, funk and electronic music to "fight with each other" (rather than smoother co-existence). Given the forthright and sometimes abrasive nature of their work, it's an idea in keeping with their career to date. Musically, what we get is a mixture of their usual electroclash and rave-inspired riffs and motifs, and basslines, strings and other instrumentation rooted in black dance music of the 1970s and '80s. When the fusion lands - as it does much of the time - it's a unique and thrilling fusion. For proof, check Tama Impala hook-up 'One Night/All Night', the Italo disco/jazz-funk/electro-house fusion of 'Incognito', and the wonderful slow-boogie mutation 'Saturine'.
