3 Men EP
3 Men EP (12")
Cat: GAMM 189. Rel: 07 Apr 25
International Truth (6:31)
Don's Expensive Afro (4:50)
Stevland's Run (6:08)
Review: After the roaring success of his last outing here, the '3 Woman EP,' Art Of Tones is back on GAMM with a 12" that brings male ovals to the fore. They are all very different in style but all highly effective. 'International Truth' opens with strident and funky disco drums and noodling guitar lines with soulful tones lighting up the beats. 'Don's Expensive Afro' is a rework of a rare Afro-disco track with more expressive vocals instructing the floor to move. Last of all is a stunning reimagining of an overlooked Stevie Wonder gem, 'Stevland's Run', which is off-balance and unusual funk madness laden with psyched-out guitar work.

Seegweed Edits Part 1
Cat: GAMM 070. Rel: 19 May 11
Angela Bofill - "People Make The World Go Round"
Ben Sidran - "About Love"
Sly Stone - "Family Affair"
Review: GAMM welcome a new face into the fold in the shape of Stockholm's Seegweed, who aptly demonstrates his panache for the edit on some classic jams. Spread across the A Side, Seegweed drops a subtle take on Angela Bofill's Stylistics cover, clearly not wanting to mess with a classic like "People Make The World Go Round". Deft percussive touches and some bottom end embellishment are added to the core which takes full effect on the midpoint break. On the flip the jazz funk break delight of Ben Sidran's "About Love" gets the subtle Seegweed treatment, and he does a neat job of extending out the sweetness that is Sly & The Family Stone's "Family Affair".

Step Into A Black Whole

Emmaculate & DJ Spen - "Step Into A Black Whole" (13:38)
Emmaculate - "Boogie On Disco Woman" (6:41)
Review: Like a veteran striker in his final season, GAMM has really captured some top form on late and now drops a fire premiere from Chicago's Emmaculate and legendary Basement Boys producer DJ Spen. Opener 'Step Into A Black Whole' is a genre-hopping 11-minute journey that moves from deep house to a hip-hop breakdown featuring KRS-One before morphing into a jazzy Afrobeat stomper. First heard by GAMM contributor Coflo during a wild house set, the track blew the roof off and always will. On the B-side, 'Boogie On Disco Woman' delivers a gritty funk, disco and soul rework with raw drums, clavinets and soulful vocals. Two standouts.

Stranger Danger (6:46)
Galaxy 21 (6:31)
Sugar Trip (5:30)
Review: Glasgow's Ewan Kelly aka Al Kent returns to Swedish label G.A.M.M. for another nice bunch of disco goodies. On the first side, you've got the lo-slung psychedelia of 'Stranger Danger' which makes for a proper dancefloor heater right at the peak of the evening, followed over on the flip by the mellowed blues of 'Galaxy 21' that's perfect musical accompaniment for a Balearic sunset, and the delay drenched dub antics of 'Sugar Trip' closes it out.

Happy
Desde El Mar
Wings
Review: As the title suggests, this fantastic re-edit EP of jazz-funk and fusion workouts was created in tribute to the UK's most renowned jazz-loving DJ, Gilles Peterson. We could certainly imagine dancers at his legendary Dingwalls sessions of the 1990s dancing enthusiastically to all three cuts. A-side 'Happy' is a fast-tempo slab of guitar solo-laden jazz-fusion positivity full of Latin-tinged percussion, twinkling pianos and spacey synths, while 'Desde El Mar' is a breathless, percussion-rich samba-dance monster blessed with some of the most life-affirming vocal improvisations we've ever heard. Closing cut 'Wings', meanwhile, is a synth-splashed, solo-sporting chunk of obscure jazz-funk whose rhythmic complexity will delight dedicated jazz dancers.

Hagalo
Hagalo (12")

Mandrill - "Hagalo" (Doctor Stereo De Nueva York A Buenos Aires mix)
Doctor Stereo - "Jet 2 Panama"
Review: The GAMM collective have been enjoying a seasonal slumber during the Winter months but with Summer scheduled to arrive the label are cranking back into business with the first of several releases. Reaching out to South America, GAMM invites Buenos Aires based producer Doctor Stereo into the fold for a double drop of Latin hotness. On the A Side, Mandrill's horn heavy 1972 classic "Hagalo" is given a self styled 'Nueva York A Buenos Aires mix' by the good Doctor who retains it's breezy feeling whilst beefing up the drums with mucho caliente results - watch out for the drop! On the flip, Dr Stereo turns up the heat with the Latin B-Boy bomb "Jet 2 Panama" which has the old school feel of Quantic's early Breaking Bread output.

Sunflower (Onur Engin edit)
For Real (Onur Engin edit)
Review: GAMM pulled off a real coup in securing a double drop of edits from Istanbul's Onur Engin and we implore you head straight for the A Side brilliance of his Freddie Hubbard tweak. Anyone with a cursory knowledge of deep house history will immediately recognise the opening string flourishes of "Sunflower" - the basis to Pepe Bradock's timeless "Deep Burnt"! Engin's take on the Hubbard original remains faithful yet adds just the right amount of percussive deftness to give it some dancefloor feet. The flipside is dedicated to a delightful take on the mid seventies soul rarity "For Real" by Flowers which again provides ample evidence of Engin's intricate editing skills.

God Made Me Funky

Headhunters - "God Made Me Funky" (Opolopo Tweak) (6:12)
Sylvia St James - "Motherland" (Opolopo Tweak) (6:24)
Review: The good folks at Gamm pop up with another of their irresistible slices of feel good funk. This one takes what some people would say is one of the most significant rare groove tracks ever in Headhunter's 'God Make Me Funky' and get Opolopo to tweak it with his usual sense of elan. The results are deadly, full of funky bass and sample course you will well recognise. On the B-side Opolopo draws out the grooves and goes for a soulful house roller that reworks Sylvia St. James's downtempo groover 'Motherland' to perfection.

Boma Yea
Review: GAMM wind the clocks back to the days of yore when broken beat was de jour, SBTRKT was known as Aaron Jerome and the label was in its pomp with this release from Pedders. Awesome afro bruk styles from the mysterious producer on Akula with a killer funk organ, twisted vocals and face screwing, squelching beat programming. Given how open both DJs and crowds are to sets that straddle any number of genres, both the original and extended version will kill in any number of environments. Complementing this is the roots reggae meets bumping beatdown slo-mo house of "Boma Yea". Another gem from the Scandinavian imprint.

Song For You
Cat: GAMM 125. Rel: 19 Jun 18
Song For You (PPA rework) (3:55)
Green Machine (PPA rework) (4:17)
Review: We were blown away by Prescription Pricing Authority's first jazz-funk and Latin-fuelled 7" on GAMM, so hopes are sky-high for this speedy follow-up. On the A-side the London twosome get busy with the soulful sunshine that is Florida outfit Popcorn's exceedingly hard-to-find "Song For You", which sounds like the sort of breezy and loved-up gem you'd like to take home to meet your mother. Turn to the flip for some tougher dancefloor business: a jaunty, tight, on-point and slightly dubbed-out rearrangement of O'Donel Levy's synth-laden 1976 jazz-funk smasher "Green Machine". We're not sure exactly who the Prescription Pricing Authority boys (or girls) are, but they've certainly got digging and editing skills.

Bongle Joogie
Sept-amber
Review: One of edit culture's current heavyweights returns as The Reflex drops two straight up, stone cold dancefloor bombs for the Revisions series from the GAMM crew. "Bongle Joogie" takes the Kool & The Gang classic "Jungle Boogie" and polishes up the drums and adds a sparkle to the killer hook to offer something new on a track that's seen plenty of turntable rotation. On the flip, The Reflex shows off his subtler side with "Sept-amber" a rendition of Earth Wind & Fire which includes some spellbinding vocal layering. Proof that edits don't always need to be plundered from the deepest realms of planet obscurity... Classics are classics for a reason.

Sundance (5:55)
Steps (4:04)
Nite Sprite (5:04)
Review: The legendary GAMM is as reliable as the sunrise and sunset each day. It always comes through with the DJ freindly, party ready sounds from whatever genre it sees fit. Here it is Japan's Dai San who comes back to the label with a second EP that finds him heading off on a jazzy escapade. The three tunes take in dazzling disco-jazz, fantastic fusion-funk and deep rare grooves that touch you to your core. 'Sundance' opens up in busy, peak time fashion with plenty of Japanese influences over an Azymuth style carnival beat. The flip is for the deeper workouts including the spaced-out and highly melodic 'Nite Sprite'.

We Can Dub It

Pablo Sanchez & Uriel E - "We Can Dub It"
Pablo Sanchez - "Monkiez"
Review: Those Scandinavian merchants of mischievous beats known as GAMM turn to the Catalonian sun for their latest twelve inch excursion, as Pablo Sanchez adds to his production CV with two cuts. The A Side sees "Yes We Can Can" from Pointer Sisters tuned inside out and embellished with some mid tempo bombastic disco dub sensibilities that further demonstrates the Barcelona based producer's skill at chopping samples. On the flip Sanchez melds some of Thelonius Monk's finest jazz flourishes to a classic jeep beat bump which should satisfy anyone who is down with the likes of Keepup! Records.

Talking About
Brazilian Soul Chant
Review: Having first appeared on Gamm in 2011, Stockholm artist Seegweed has amassed a very respectful portfolio of edits. And there's no signs of him stopping as he digs deeper than ever for this special 12": First up is a rare groove stomper twist of FBI's "Talking About Love" where the original's widescreen orchestration is given full attention... The jazz funk fusion really strides with psychedelic flare while the strings sit happily in a world of their own. Meanwhile on the B, Jon Lucien reps the finest Virgin Islands soul on "Brazilian Soul Chant". Paying full respect to the original, here we find Seegweed adding additional percussion and neat layers on the guitars and vocals. Two completely different chapters to a book we hope Seegweed will continue writing forever... This is what edits are all about!

Review: Coming straight out of Berlin, True Beatz delivers two peak time cuts that will rock any party. On "The Workout" they blend Average White Band's killer version of "Work To Do" together with Q-Tip's swinging vocals. On the flip the cheeky Will Smith gets an East German jazz/hip hop/samba twist that actually makes the Fresh Prince sounding fresher than ever!

Barely Breaking Even (DJ Prime rework)
Cat: GAMM 061. Rel: 24 Sep 10
Universal Robot Band - "Vareky Breaking Even" (DJ Prime rework)
Marvin Gaye - "Praise" (DJ Prime remix)
Review: Raw Fusion offshoot G.A.M.M. pretty much ruled the vinyl roost a few years back with a slew of boogified hip-hop blends from the likes of Red Astaire, Beat Conductor and some cheeky scamp called Todd Terje. The illicit imprint are slowly picking up speed once again with this double drop of reworks from DJ Prime the third G.A.M.M. release this year. Widely regarded as the inspiration for UK reissue label BBE, Universal Robot Band's boogie standard "Barely Breaking Even" gets toughened up with some additional house flex. A similar treatment is afforded to Marvin Gaye's "Praise" on the B Side, with the gospel tinged soulful original augmented by a neck snapping break. This heavy syncopation and some neat tape loop edits are all that is needed to exploit the tracks dancefloor potential. More please G.A.M.M.

Let It Happen

Vangelis - "Let It Happen" (Beatfanatic's Balearic Boogie remix)
Turelli - "Mekano"
Review: Ok, this one is gonna be big! Vangelis early 70s psychedelic folk, rock, jazz gem "Let It Happen" has for over 10 years been an all time classic at the Gamm headquarters. Now its finally been redefined at the Beatfanatic studios with a thumping boogie rhythm, a massive b-line and some seriously spaced out keyboard action. Clocking in at almost 12mins, this is the ultimate Balearic end of the night jam that will go down just as well in clubs as at the beaches in Ibiza. Oh yeah, almost forgot about the flip. Turelli, yet another Beatfanatic alias (phew!), comes through with an Italo inspired disco jam that surely will please fans of the current neo disco revival.
