Never Hit The Bottom
Lick
Review: Soft Focus invites you into a world where ambient calm meets dub-infused momentum. The opener, 'noomi,' drifts in like a distant memory, its restrained percussion and shimmering synth tones evoking both serenity and longing. Then comes 'pluck (feat. Richard),' a piece that feels more tactile, its intricate melodies threaded through a deep, pulsing bassline. On the second side, 'never hit the bottom' moves with greater urgency, its rhythmic core swaying between hypnotic repetition and subtle dissonance. By the time 'lick' closes the record, its dub echoes and tactile textures have fully enveloped you, leaving a lingering impression of quiet introspection.

Review: Michael Grigoni and Pan•American's latest collaboration is a series of contemplative reflections on the isolation, fractures and uncertainties that define today's world. The album delves into the emotional landscape shaped by political divisions, personal solitude, and the lingering aftereffects of the pandemic. Through its fusion of folk, country, bluegrass, and blues elements, paired with a modern, ambient atmosphere, the sound is both rooted in tradition and forward-looking. Tracks like 'Sun Morning Sun' and 'Silver Streams' carry a sense of quiet introspection, while 'Black River Song' and 'Mirage/Afternoon' showcase the duo's ability to merge organic instrumentation with spacious, textured soundscapes. The album's exploration of personal and collective experience creates a reflective space, asking listeners to pause and engage with the complexities of modern life. A musical journey that speaks to the heart of the American experience, offering an emotional response to an uncertain future.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing to corner of outer sleeve but otherwise in excellent condition***

Divine Comedie stands as a remarkable collaboration between Bernard Parmegiani and Francois Bayle, released by Recollection GRM as a comprehensive four-LP set, complete with a poster. This ambitious work draws inspiration from Dante's epic, offering a sonic journey through hell, purgatory, and paradise. Parmegiani's segment, representing Inferno, is an intense exploration of anguish and contradiction. Composed between 1971 and 1972, it features piercing synth whirs, haunting vocal chants and insect-like sounds that evoke a sense of despair. His careful manipulation of Michel Hermon's voice serves to anchor the chaotic soundscape while simultaneously distorting the narrative. This approach results in a chilling audio experience that combines surreal sound design with an almost theatrical presentation. In contrast, Bayle's Purgatory embraces a minimalist aesthetic, employing Hermon's voice with a sense of clarity amidst an intricate layering of abstract sounds. His composition reveals a bleak serenity, punctuated by flickers of hope that emerge from a rich mixture of drones and organic instrumentation. The final album, Paradis, is a collaborative effort that gradually leads listeners toward illumination. Stripped of narration, this 22-minute piece unfolds slowly, interweaving delicate electronics with celestial vibes and vibrant accordion melodies, culminating in an ethereal crescendo. Together, Parmegiani and Bayle create an audio experience that challenges conventional boundaries, transforming Dante's vision into a wonderful exploration of sound and emotion, making Divine Comedie a significant addition to the genre of musique concrete.

Review: In celebration of Arvo Part's 90th year, his latest release showcases the Estonian composer's continued exploration of minimalist, spiritually charged sound . Part's work has always sought to blend the sacred with the secular, and this collection of new renditions brings forward the timeless resonance of his choral and orchestral compositions. Opening with 'Littlemore Tractus,' based on John Henry Newman's reflections, the piece sets the tone of quiet, introspective change that permeates the entire work. His music, a dialogue between sound and silence, invites profound contemplation, with the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra and the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir under Tonu Kaljuste's direction offering nuanced, deeply attentive performances. Compositions like 'Vater unser,' showcase Part's ability to transform liturgical text into transcendent musical experience. There's an undeniable spiritual gravity in pieces such as 'Cantique des degres' and 'Sequentia,' where strings and vocals weave in delicate yet forceful patterns, revealing a steady undercurrent of renewal. The rich textures in these works evoke both a longing for and a reconciliation with the past, capturing Part's life-long exploration of sacred music's dialogue with the world. The album culminates with 'Vater unser,' an evocative reworking that brings together choir, strings, and piano, offering a meditative close to an album that is as much about reflection as it is about the continued forward momentum of Part's artistry. Recorded in Tallinn's Methodist Church, this latest chapter is a continuation of the Part-Eicher partnership that has defined so much of his career, expanding the legacy of albums like Tabula rasa and reinforcing Part's place as one of the most significant voices in contemporary classical music of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Review: Parus is a Belarusian ethno-ambient project blending pagan songs with modern soundscapes and Zara is their debut album. Led by ethnographer and folk singer Hanna Silivonchyk, the record features traditional Belarusian songs in various dialects, all accompanied by synths and field recordings crafted by Anton Anishchanka. The tracks were gathered during ethnographic expeditions across Belarusian national parks, and songs like 'Soniejka' and the title cut offer intimate reflections on life, love and mythology. It connects to the past while maintaining a deep personal edge that makes Zara a fascinating exploration of Belarusian culture.

Review: Celebrating its 30th anniversary this Record Store Day, 'Original Soundtracks 1' is a bold, imaginative collaboration between British ambient pioneer Brian Eno and Irish band U2 under the moniker Passengers. Blurring the line between ambient experimentation and cinematic storytelling, the album features 15 tracks that were all conceived as soundtracks for fictional films. Highlights include the haunting 'Miss Sarajevo' with Luciano Pavarotti and contributions from Howie B and Holi and this remastered anniversary edition comes on recycled black vinyl. An adventurous 1995 release that stands up now as an atmospheric, genre-blurring work and a rare and inspired detour in U2's discography.

The soundtrack to Graham Eatough's stage adaptation of David Keenan's novel, This Is Memorial Device, composed by Stephen Pastel - of Kurt Cobain faves The Pastels fame - and Gavin Thomson, offers a compelling third iteration of the book's myth. Fusing reworked home recordings from the era with expanded versions of music originally scored for the theatre production, the album captures the essence of Glasgow's post-punk scene from 1978 to 1986. Tracks like 'Introduction To Why I Did It' and 'We Have Sex' evoke a sense of youthful hope and creativity, reflecting the play's exploration of art, music, and romance in small-town Scotland. Directed by Julian House, the video for 'We Have Sex' adds a vibrant visual dimension to the DIY aesthetic of the era. This Is Memorial Device: Music from the Stage Play not only complements the book and stage adaptation but also stands on its own torch for the spirit of post-punk and the power of belief in the transformative potential of art.

Review: Perila's latest double album is a mesmerising exploration of ambient soundscapes, field recordings and vocal manipulation. Spanning 21 tracks, the work unfolds like an immersive narrative, with each side offering its own thematic journey. Her voice drifts through vast, haunting spaces, weaving into ghostly chorals and spectral pulses, creating an eerie atmosphere that blends the intimate with the outer world. Tracks like 'Deza' and 'Sepula Purm' highlight her ability to transform simple vocal echoes into atmospheric wonders, while 'Nia' introduces faint low-end rumbles that evolve into hypnotic rhythms. As the album progresses, Perila delves deeper into industrial and experimental terrain, with tracks like 'Mola' offering a soft, meditative reprieve, before 'Supa Mi' strips everything back to raw, acapella fragments. The sound grows more intense as it moves forward, with 'Darbounouse Song' delivering a creative peak of crackling textures and resonant gong tones, and 'She Wonder' exploring rhythmic digital precipitation. Her use of field recordings, fragmented whispers, and organic sounds results in a deeply personal and atmospheric experience, making this her most cohesive and fully realized work to date. Fans of experimental, immersive sound will find much to admire here.

Review: Perila returns with a reflective spiritual successor to her 2022 album that comes on Vaagner's sister label A Sunken Mall. The album takes in eight tracks produced between 2021 and 2023 and they all do a fine job of conveying a serene vulnerability with its drifting, ethereal soundscapes smeared with echoing voices, droning guitars and resonant textures. It's like a whispered conversation during quiet moments and once again makes for a world that doesn't need to be understood, only felt. The Air Outside Feels Crazy Right Now reminds us that finding inner peace through music can counter the chaos of the external world and help turn fragility into strength.

Review: KUM explores the work of Giusto Pio from the late 1970s to the early 1990s, which was a period of intense sound experimentation. The album features four pieces-'Rappel,' 'Alla Corte di Nefertiti,' 'MeDeA' and 'A.D.A.M. Ubi Es' which are all linked by Pio's collaboration with Franco Battiato. Their creative exchange helped shape Pio's post-avant-garde vision and blend new musical fragments and "astral counterpoints in frequencies and colours in time." Nearly 50 years later, KUM offers a philological perspective on these intertwined artistic paths that highlights the innovative approach that defined Pio's unique exploration of sound and composition.

Review: This new one from our favourite US ambient outlet takes the form of a selection of long-form compositions from artists who are close to the label. As such it's a perfect reflection of its signature sound - deeply immersive soundscapes, slowly shifting synths and meditative moods made with a mix of hardware tools, guitars, pedals and even baritone vocals. It's named after a Norwegian term for warmth and intimacy, which certainly plays out from the evolving loops of 'A Whisper' to the textured melancholy of 'Canaan' and the reverberant drift of 'Coronation Ring'.

In a first-time collaboration, psychedelic trance godhead Simon Posford (best known as Hallucinogen and a founding member of Shpongle) teams up with fellow hippie and flutist Raja Ram (Ronald Rothfield) on a welling improvisatory record, Improvisations For Piano And Flute. Though both are highly esteemed artists in their respective micro-corners of the electronic music scene, Posford and Rothfield both depart significantly from their usually danceable ends for a living-room recorded set of ambiences. With a synth placed atop an antique Bluthner piano, Raj and Simon would join in after the other first begun playing, delivering a 44-minute effluence for the spontaneous soul.

By merging open-tuned guitar, Kohkin (aka the Jew's harp) and traditional throat singing, Otani creates a sound filled with rich harmonics and fluid rhythms that all evoke the mood of Impressionist art and explore themes of freedom, nature and self-discovery. Influenced by his punk roots, worldly travels and immersion in mountain life, Otani's storytelling music reflects his deep connection to the natural world and makes for a far-journeying listen.

Review: If you at first mistakenly read the title of the new Pye Corner Audio box set as "Where Things Are Now: No Tomorrow", you're not alone - Martin Jenkins' effortless blend of retro-nostalgia and forward-facing production is a keen match for reflexive cynicisms like this. His use of sizzling vintage audio-tropes could only have been achieved in the 21st Century and helps foster a reinstated optimism. The name of the full series is actually Where Things Are Hollow; and while two volumes have been released already, a third original one now comes added here, on top of a full remix roundoff featuring Alessandro Cortini, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith and John Talabot, producing this rather banging four-volume set.

Review: Featuring a tenor saxophone and digital keyboard with subtle additions of other instruments, it offers up an effortless and expansive exchange between Shiroishi and Kurek whose collaboration first began during a BBC Radio 3 remote session aired on Jennifer Lucy Allan's Late Junction show in February 2024. The easy chemistry between them continued after the show and soon resulted in tracks that celebrate intuitive expression and the tenderness of first takes. Across these immersive sounds jazz sounds their sense of trust and discovery is there for all to hear as their sonics elegantly complement each other's voices and gestures.

Review: Soundwalk Collective's their latest project is released by Ubi Ku, a new imprint focused on Buddhism, spirituality and contemporary creation. This immersive album draws inspiration from Tibetan deities and the Himalayan Plateau and is marbled with field recordings made in Upper Mustang, Nepal, in 2016. The collection blends natural sounds, bells, drones and vocals into spine-tingling sermons that also include a Patti Smith contribution to 'Chasing the Demon.' It makes for an expansive, emotive sonic tale that draws on deep research and fieldwork to make for a sublime intersection of sound, environment and spirituality that is utterly profound.
