Soundtracks
Review: Finder Keepers recently sent soundtrack lovers into orgasm when they reissue the rarest of them all, the Belladonna Of Sadness soundtrack, and now they score big once more. This one is another dive into the vaults of composer Masahiko Sato and upon returning to the surface we're presented with a bunch of the 13 lost cuts that never made it onto to Italian-only sound track album first time round. It makes for two tracks freaky fuzz, dense noise, post-punk rhythms and intense sonics that sound like nothing else.

Review: Dirty Harry is one of the greatest Western characters of all time and the main title theme from the movie is just as brilliant. Here it gets pressed up to a fiery and funky 7" that follows on from one on this same label back in summer which offered up 'Scorpio's View' on 45rpm. This one opens with the eponymous theme which is a funky and thrilling chase with superb rhythms and lush strings and then the flip is 'Magnum Force' (main Title) which is more subtle and slow burning but just as dramatic.

Siegfried Schwab takes care of the A-side with 'Getting High', a scorching funk workout with hard-worked guitar chords and precise percussion over lots of wah-wah effects. 'Feel It; flip the script with a superbly stripped-down jazz-funk lounge sound. Klaus Weiss then steps up on 'Time For Rhythm' with some loose, percussive funk beats that are raw and organic, then Peter Thomas closes down with 'Documentation', a more richly instrumental and multi-layered jazz-funk sound that conveys real grandeur.

Review: Wow, classics don't come much more special than this. A like-for-like repress of the 1970 RCA release, both sides here are soaked in Scott Heron's raw troubled soul. The endlessly sampled, hugely powerful and perfectly funky "Revolution" remains almost as poignant and prophetic as it was the day it was penned. "Home Is Where The Hatred Is" is much more personal and reveals his talent as a singer as much as the lead track boasts his poetry and ability to deliver a strong message.

Review: Back in the 60s and 70s, library music exploded as a genre. It saw plenty of talented musicians make extra cash by laying down endless instrumental grooves for use in TV, film and radio. The King Underground label is now digging into the vast vaults for a new series of releases of some of the finest sounds from the era. The first 45 features tracks considered to be 'dramatic' from John Scott and Tony Kinsey. Scott's 'Milky Way' opens up with cosmic chords and sweeping strings that take you to the stars while 'Star Voyage' has a more busy lead. Kinsey's 'Kaleidoscope' builds the tension with multiple movements from several instruments.

Review: The latest golden nugget from Hayes-based soul specialists Expansion sees Phil Asher, The Mighty Zaf and 2000 Black take it in turns to rework one of the highlights of modern jazz-man Robb Scott's recent album, Siren. Asher and Zaf kick things off with a deliciously glassy-eyed jazz-funk-meets-soulful house revision that not only boasts a seriously loved-up, beat-free intro, but also tons of subtle instrumental solos. A radio edit of that rework is also available on the flip. That's where you'll find 2000 Black's brilliantly jazzy broken beat revision, which is every bit as sumptuous and musically rich as the West London duo's own productions.

Review: Enois Scroggins was an American funk and gospel singer from Tulsa, Oklakhoma who developed his own style that he called 'E-Funk'. He passed away in 2019 due to a heart attack, but his legacy certainly lives on, with French label Dd Lahouve Production reissuing some of his finest work here from back in 2012. The neon-lit boogie-down vibe of 'Under My Skin' (featuring Misty Lane) will get you moving with its proper west coast flavour - he was said to be based in Los Angeles for most of his career. On the flip, the low slung disco funk of 'Love Is You' (vocal) provides more reliable mood music.

Review: Anton ScruScru Bogomolov is a mega hyped artist but for good reason. His slew of singles have all been noteworthy and now this new 12" overflows with more brilliant ideas. After a hugely prolific 2020 he shows no signs of slowing down here. Once again he fuses classic jazz-funk style with fresh London broken beat and wall that is good about the current jazz scene. Blurring boundaries as he goes this could be as good in a live setting as it could through a big sound system in a club. Big chords, bristling drumming, disco energy, it's all here and then some.

Review: German duo Session Victim have always been about much more than just club tracks - their music draws on their playing skills and formal backgrounds so comes alive with meaningful melodies and rich instrumentation that elevates each track above the norm. This new EP on their home label Delusions of Grandeur kicks off with 'Screen Off' (feat Ras Stimulant) which is disco house with bubbly basslines and a retro feel. It also comes as an a cappella and on the flip 'Light The Way' is a seductively smooth cut with Balearic synths and floating pads that will levitate you off the floor. Review: Four artists with a taste for classic deep house infused with more than a touch of house line on the Silver Walker label's sixth release. Following releases on the likes of Local Talk, Balance, Traxx Underground, Mate, Quintessentials and upcoming projects on Nervous and NDATL, Shaka opens proceedings with a flurry of Hammond and plenty of exotic percussion, lie Alan Hawkshaw riffing with Underground Resistance. Glenn Davis (Wolf, Yore Records, Deeper Groove and Selections Records) delivers a deeper house workout on the A2 house track, the jazzy keyboard chords, fluttering flute and restless synths working real magic. One of the masterminds behind the Silver Walker label, Diego aka DFRA, comes on all perky with the saxes and soloing Rhodes, on the second side's opener, 'Nitewax'. Then we close with Damien aka Keymono (founder of several labels including Monocturne Records and Funkyshirts) laying on the handclaps of classic disco strings, the snippets of funk guitar and vibes the cherry on top.

Review: This marks a first 7" from bassist and composer Shay Hazan playing alongside his quintet in their native Tel Aviv, Israel. The a-side is a dedication to a giant of the Israeli jazz scene and a sometime mentor of Hazan, saxophonist Albert Beger, with uptempo chord work and swirling drums that make you want to spin around like you just don't care. After that bit of joyous but sophisticated jazz comes 'Old Tart', a more slow burning tune that builds through big horns, spare but dramatic chords and tumbling percussion until you are in raptures. This is likely the start of big things for this crew.

Review: Most experts agree that Archie Shepp's 1972 album "Attica Blues" is one of the finest soul-jazz LPs ever made - a politically-charged affair that just gets better with every listen. This tidy seven-inch single from Mr Bongo offers up two of the album's standout moments. On the A-side you'll find the title track, a swirling, down-low mixture of belted-out female chorus vocals, surging orchestration, Blaxploitation style bottom end and an impassioned lead vocal from Henry Hull. Flipside cut "Quiet Dawn" sees Waheeda Massey take lead vocals over a more obviously jazz-centric backing track rich in wild sax solos from the effervescent Shepp. Like the A-side, it's simply essential.

Review: Japanese producer Shinsuke Taoka is part of a long-standing Japanese tradition of flipping hip-hop, jazz and soul songs, giving them a completely new lens to analyse them under. Under Shin-Ski, the first track under attack is an unidentified Hip-hop sample of Bill Withers 'Lovely Day' (famously sampled for the soundtrack of The Bodyguard by S.O.U.L.S.Y.S.T.E.M.) for 'We'. Shin-ski takes a Caribbean rap version, injecting it with jazz elements alongside the hot flow from the MC. Track 2 'Her' is a complete transformation of Common's 'I Used to love H.E.R.', an abstract hip-hop titan on its own, now with some gentle keys and a subtle drumline that gives the track a sense of intimacy. Fantastic find here, super limited for a one-off pressing so pick up this 7" whilst you still can.

Review: Fresh from making his first appearance on the party-starting Resense series, Shin-Ski (real name Shinsuke Taoka) delivers a rare, four-track "45" featuring a bunch of previously unheard productions from his jam-packed hard drive. He starts as he means to go on with 'On & On', a head-nodding hip-hop club cut crafted from bits of an old soul floor-filler, before smothering another toe-tapping beat with mazy electric piano solos on 'Classic'. Over on the flip, 'Beach' sees the Japanese veteran wrap a boom-bap beat and funky bassline in flanged guitar licks, while closing cut 'That Jazz' more than lives up to its descriptive title. Loose, groovy and musically rich, it should please anyone who loved Guru's classic Jazzamatazz productions.

Review: A short name hides a long story - Detroit-born Chad Hughs graduated from the same high school as Diana Ross, going onto become a multi-talented musician as well as a teacher and composer. The fourth release from cd exclusive vinyl pressers Jai Alai, collectors can now own this unique 7" containing two completely different sides of Sir Wick from his two albums. A side's title track 'Seal My Heart' contains the vocal talents of Sedalia Marie, with layered vocals and a baseline that makes this pure soul song feel deeply cinematic. The B side has been decades in the making, selected from a fully orchestrated musical in the works since 1996, finally being recorded and completed in 2017. These two tracks are deeply sentimental ditties of doting young love, and now two rare soul ballads from a musical luminary are available for the first time on a 45. Review: The JalapeNo label sure does like it hot and this one is no different. It sees the return of label regulars Skeewiff for a new series of outings that take the form of reworked covers of some of their favourite library tracks, inspired by greats of the genre such as Keith Mansfield, Brian Bennett, and Alan Hawkshaw. First up is 'Exclusive Blend,' a rather classic instrumental composition by Mansfield. 'Spanish Flea' is on the flip and is a version of a very famous work by Herb Alpert and his Tijuana Brass Band. It's a funky take with lots of percussive energy and big strings.

Review: Skygaze has some recent tunes remixed on this new Flumo Limited 12" and the results are nice and varied. The opener is from Allysha Joy who flips 'Night Heat' into a lively broken beat run through with warming and soulful synths and a sprinkling of percussion. 'Gimme Five' (Jailed Jamie & Lorenzo Soria remix) then ups the ante with a party-starting house vibe and fiery stabs. 'Wagwan' gets a fresh dose of broken beats from Divorce From New York that will have you flailing your limbs in all directions and Sofatalk & Footnote then keep things a little deeper with their jazzy and sun-kissed take on 'Minor Mood'. 'City Cathedratics' is the final cut and becomes a cosmic and heady, percussive and shimmering late-night sound thanks to the work of Karmasound remix.

Review: An impressively retro-feeling "breaksoul" choice from London label Digga Please?, once again delivering on their promise to bring the finest in funk, soul, disco, rap, b-boy breaks and "all that good shit". First released in 2004 on the iconic Freestyle Records, 'Get It On' is a bona fide cut & paste classic, its break-do backbeat and slippery funk vamps harking a filtered Rhodes line; here an obscure r&b libretto sings demonstratively, warning us of an incumbent detailing of her preferred mode of frisking: "this is how we like to get it on!" The record then segues into a timeless Gil-Scott Heron sample and breaks-tastic track slathered in sax, attesting to a so-called coolness that can be tapped by anyone willing to ease into it: "hipness is not a state of mind, it's a fact of life".

Review: He's jazzed all over Bob. He's filled Grandmaster Flash with jazz too. Shucks, he's done Jacko several times over. But Ed's back and he's jazzing all over the place. This time they focus on the later stages of Jackson's career: "Dangerous" rolls with sneaking minor key twinkles and smoky spoken word before the melody softens to allow a little Michael in the mix. "Do You Remember" is more a jazz boogie joint with funky piano rolls on the fills and much more engaging groove.
